When Will Gas Hit $4 A Gallon?

This thread is almost a moot point as the U.S. has already breached the $4 a gallon mark.

HOWEVER...

As a national average:

The U.S. will likely see $4 a gallon shortly after the refineries along the Texas/LA coast shut and the workers are evac'd.

The U.S. will MOST DEFINITELY see $4 a gallon OR HIGHER, should Rita take out any pipeline infrastructure/drilling platfrom/well placements that Katrina missed, damaged previously or missed altogether.

The U.S. will MOST DEFINITELY see $4 a gallon OR HIGHER, should Rita cause severe rain/storm surges in the NOLA area - surges that could reverse the recovery of NOLA based refineries.

The U.S. will MOST DEFINITELY see $4 a gallon OR HIGHER, should said refineries sustain enough damage to shut BOTH TX AND NOLA fuel production for ANY extended period - the results of which would likely spiral the U.S. (and the world) MUCH DEEPER into the refined fuel crisis that is ALREADY UNDER WAY in many parts to the world.

----------

RightWing is correct. Invest in oil companies. BUT invest in oil companies that have proven reserves ONLY.

Teazeman is incorrect/correct.

INCORRECT: Refineries were not built in the U.S. over the last 30 years because the predictions that the world was going to use less oil by the 90's were grossly inept (the same idiots claim today that there will be more oil in the future). Furthermore, the profitability of building a refinery (VERY EXPENSIVE) coupled with operating one (VERY MARGINAL) over and above the fact the the world is RUNNING OUT OF OIL makes it VERY LOGICAL to not build any.

CORRECT: WE ALL HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME FOR:

a) building a completely unsustainable way of life based entirely on the exploitation of a finite resouce

b) not challenging the despot regiemes of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya, Kuwait, Nigeria et al. to account for and independently verify how much of said finite resource remains to be used

c) allowing BigOil and major corporations to effectively manipulate the government mandate (therein the public) through propaganda, lies, corrupt practice, soft money and so forth; as part of a concerted effort to block the protection and conservation of the envrionment for financial gain - despite the fact, that PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION have ALWAYS RETAINED a SOLID MAJORITY of PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR YEARS!!!

Stryker, the only change needed in your thread is....instead of saying $4 OR HIGHER....change to $4 AND MUCH HIGHER.

stryker, refiner margains have been very good over the last 12-24 months inspite of what has been reported or what you may have been reading, not sure of the validity of the running out of oil argument as i am not a geologist or that well versed in the future holdings of untapped reserves help by the major oil companies in this country and around the world.

just received an e-mail indicating that supply disruption can be expected in many areas and many local c-stores and stations will suffer product outages, as is always the case your best bet during these conditions is the availabilty of branded product from the big guys ie Exxon-Shell-BP. My sources tell me that all bets are off as far as pricing is concerned, that makes me a tad nervous.

BP has just annouced the closeure and evacuation of the Texas City Refinery, we are seeing increases in the 40 cent range today, if this refinery as well as others are damaged-look the f*k out for the highest gas you have ever seen. This is a 500,000,000.00 million barrell a day refiner and it is not the largest in the area.

500 thousand, sorry for the typo,

Valero capacity over 300 thou per day

Marathon over 85 thou per day

Exxon not sure on their numbers

Regardless a lot of capacity could be in jeopardy and this will not be good.

And/or used to be for these higher energy costs will curtail some of the ridiculous energy usage. The vehicles we drive and massive homes and other buildings we heat/cool with no regard to the environment or rest of world.

Kansas City news channel 9 just reported this morning that the average customer in the midwest can expect a 70% increase in fuel costs!

Spring/Summer 2006

2.40 here in early January?

Going to be another expensive driving season for Americans.

Oil is sitting at $63. Meanwhile nobody seems to notice this strength during a usually soft time for oil and unleaded gasoline prices.

One of my all-time favorite threads here.

Any books care to hang a line on $4 bucks this year?

If so, I am willing to nibble with a "yes" bet if I can get at least a odds at decent + money.

$2.50 here in mid-march

Oil back to $63, lets see how many people scream this summer about gas prices.

I'm always ready to take the under, unless their is a war with Iran. You think oil will hit $4 even if there is no war in Iran?

My first prediction came true in this thread setting the pace for several others. One of my favorites too.

Unfortunately, in time yes I do believe gas goes to 4 and higher.

However, when playing market, they dont have an option to cancel "no" bets if we go to war with Iran.

As dollar gets devalued toward worthless, prices of most things we import are going to significantly rise.

This thread is pretty good. No doubt about it. I just read through everything.

I usually hate bumps. But this was a good one. Nice call woof.

Gas was over 4$ at some places. Just never really stayed there or became nationwide.
