Sick Gambler, I beg to differ. Bad Lieutenant, with Harvey Keitel, is centered around the main character's downward spiral...via baseball bets. I especially like how he touts the Mets with his NYPD co-workers, but meanwhile he is adding another couple dimes on the Dogers on a payphone to his bookie...

[As the otherwise nameless title character in Abel Ferrara's NC-17-rated Bad Lieutenant, Harvey Keitel plays an NYPD detective who compulsively places outlandish bets he can't cover, sticks needles in his arm and shoots up, snorts coke seconds after dropping his kids off at school, cavorts nakedly and drunkenly with prostitutes and masturbates in front of teenage girls. Meanwhile, he's investigating the brutal rape of a nun.]

Not for everyone, to be sure, but a must for some of us.

I agree "the runner" had potential but fell apart. a real waste of a good cast with john goodman, joe montagne, and courtney cox from friends, but i'm voting for a movie that recently came out but was only shown in obscure theatres.

OWNING MAHONEY is a true story movie made about the bank loan officer in Canada that embezzled millions from his bank by piggybacking extra funds onto other peoples loans and then running off to atlantic city and firing away not to mention all the phone calls to his bookie to get down on games.

THIS GUY MAKES DELL DUDE LOOK LIKE A RANK AMATEUR DEGENERATE. it's really a sad story but very humorous to anybody that has ever taken shots or known people that chased etc. This character makes dell dudes suicide overdraft parlays looks like responsible gambling.

Also in the movie mahoney's girlfriend is played by actress minnie driver.

this movie is a gambling must see movie.

How about "Maverick" with Mel Gibson, James Garner and Jodi Foster...that movie pretty much centered around Texas Hold'em..although it was also a sappy love story

"The Gambler". But that being said, WTF, no mention of "Color of Money"?

Eddie Felson: How much did you take off Moselle? I heard a hundred...
Vincent Lauria: 150
sarcastically
Vincent Lauria: That's right, a hundred fifty.
Eddie Felson: You walk into a shoestore with a hundred and fifty, you walk out with one shoe! We were working on five thousand!

Eddie Felson: You gotta have two things to win. You gotta have brains and you gotta have balls. And you got too much of one and not enough of the other

Eddie Felson: Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.

Eddie Felson: I can always go back to whiskey, it's been very good to me.

Who's gonna be the first to tell me the orginal brand of Eddie's whiskey. After the first movie all the guys in my neigborhood were always trying to find it.

It has to be everyone's favorite that is a sports gambler because this is the only sports gambling related movie ever made. This is what I don't understand. There has been over 1 million movies made on this planet probably, and why is this the only sports gambling related movie ever made where they really get into sports gambling, bookies, collectors wanting their money, hearing the bettor actually putting in his bet on the phone and asking for a line, and saying, give me so and so for 3 dimes. I mean, this is priceless, and it's too bad this is the only movie like this ever made. There should be more than just one now that there are a lot of gamblers worldwide and more people will wanna see stuff like this.. Really hard to believe this is the only movie like this ever.. That's why every sports gambler will always call this their favorite movie of all time because there is no other ones ever made like it.

There is a movie called THE RUNNER that's about sports betting. It's also filmed on the Las Vegas strip. It's one of my favourites.

did anybody see the one with ryan o'neil as a sports reporter for a newspaper and how he turned into a compulsive gambler. I remember watching this movie, can't remember the name. One part always sticks out in my mine when he is at the racetrack with his daughter and he owes this guy some money and the guy pushes him into a garbage can and he falls on the fall and gets mustard all over his shirt. Very good gambling movie about a reporter who turns into a comlusive gambler and goes into G.A. and recovers from this sickness. Did anybody see this or know what i am talking about wanted to rent it however could'nt remeber the name of the movie.

Sporty Steve, the name of the movie was FEVER PITCH. Here is a trailer. Through the many gratuitous jumbo-cleavage shots, from the super-surly acting-against-type of arch villain Chad Everett to the climax, which involves Ryan O'Neal rolling around in a garbage can full of mustard, this picture suggests that the very respectable director Richard Brooks, in his waning phase, was a couple of Schlitzes shy of a six pack. The thing you'll take away from this film, aside from Catherine Hicks' attempts not to appear embarrassed in the role of Ho with Heart of Gold, is that insane Dolby score, which suggests the fanfare that would greet Jack Klugman as he impresses the nanas by cleaning up at an old-age home's craps game.

Without a doubt "The Hustler" is at the top of the list. Boy, could I go for a glass of JTS Brown.
