NFL has a rule where you get drafts picks as compensation on highly rated FAs that go somewhere else.
They probably would have got an even higher pick then they got from Cleveland if they would have gone that route

Agree they should've just waited....30 picks in the middle of the draft is the difference in compensation from trading him vs letting him walk from what I've read so far.
The flip side to that coin is they like Elandon Roberts a ton and think he is the future at that position. Have a few other young guys ready to go as well.
Liked watching Collins play though. Shed blockers like a D-Lineman and dropped into coverage like a safety. A very rare breed of player.
Why? It's perfectly reasonable to question his process at times. A few years ago he didn't even know how to use timeouts at the end of halves.

His teams have the best QB in the most QB-driven era, so the margin of error is pretty big in the sense of being able to sustain success.
If Pats know they will not resign him they got back a higher compensatory pick than they would've gotten had he walked in free agency. Browns pick will be the 1st comp pick at end of 3rd round where as Pats would be towards back of order.
Pats sent him somewhere where he will not come back to haunt them in postseason this year. He is a tremendous player but from a business standpoint they feel resigning Hightower, Butler, Sheard and Bennett to extensions brings a better overall value.
