Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the Valspar golf tournament this week:
10-1— Justin Thomas.
11-1— Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa
16-1— Collin Morikawa
20-1— Xander Schauffele
22-1— Louis Oosthuizen
25-1— Tyrrell Hatton, Paul lCasey

Quote of the Day
“At the time, I thought ‘I could be doing this for 30 years and never move up’. I had $40,000 in law school debt and I had an opportunity to go and work for a prestigious law firm in Houston — or run the risk of slipping into the ether of nothingness. That was my perspective at that time.”
Longwood basketball coach Griff Aldrich, who was a lawyer 20 years ago

Thursday’s quiz
What was the last college hoop team to win consecutive national titles?

Wednesday’s quiz
Pete Maravich holds the single-game scoring record for a D-I player, set against Alabama in 1970. He scored 69 points in that game.

Tuesday’s quiz
76ers’ C Joel Embiid played one year of college hoop, at Kansas.

*******************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….
.
13) Kris Bryant signed with Colorado Rockies for seven years, $182M; Kris Bryant is on my fantasy baseball team. This is very good news.

There is a scene in the classic gambling movie Let It Ride, where Richard Dreyfuss is on a hot streak at the racetrack; he yells out “What a day!! What a fabulous day!!”

No one wants to play for Colorado, because they usually don’t pay their best players a lot of money- they let Nolan Arenado walk last year, Trevor Story is currently a free agent, but they gave out serious money to Bryant here, and for that I am grateful.

12) With Jesse Winker getting traded to Seattle, looks like I’ll be watching lot of Mariner games this season; I have their #1-3-4 hitters on my fantasy squad.

11) Wright State 93, Bryant 82— Kris Bryant had a very good day; Bryant Bulldogs, not so much. Tanner Holden scored 37 points, Wright State advances to play Arizona Friday.

10) Notre Dame 89, Rutgers 87, 2OT:
— Notre Dame put in an offensive rebound with 0:01.4 left for the win.
— Rutgers was +12 on boards, only 4-6 on foul line; ND was 9-16.
— Notre Dame moves on to play Alabama Friday afternoon.

9) HBO has a new series called Winning Time, about the LA Lakers in the Magic Johnson era; not sure if the show is 100% factual, but wow, did they do a hatchet job on Jerry West, who was coach of the Lakers when they drafted Magic- he quit before the next season started. They made West look like a something of a wacko.

They’ve had two episodes so far; Lakers tried to hire Jerry Tarkanian at one point, so that should be this week’s episode. John C Reilly is very good as Jerry Buss, owner of the Lakers.

8) Chicago Cubs gave Japanese OF Seiya Suzuki $85M for five years, the highest-ever salary for a Japanese position player. He hit 38 homers in Japan last season.

7) Funny thing, while having lunch Wednesday, I’m watching a replay of Tuesday night’s Cleveland State-Xavier NIT game; a notice comes on my cellphone: Xavier fired basketball coach Travis Steele- they fired the guy a day after his team won a game, which tells you how irrelevant the NIT is.

6) LB Von Miller gets $51M guaranteed to sign with the Buffalo Bills; Miller just helped the Rams win the Super Bowl. Thought he might re-sign in LA, but he took the $$$ and ran. Can’t say that I blame him.

5) Other baseball stuff:
— P Zach Greinke gets $13M for one year from Kansas City
— OF Joc Pederson gets $6M for one year from San Francisco.

4) Major League Baseball added 30 doubleheaders to the schedule Wednesday, as they re-tool the schedule to replace the week of games that got postponed by the lockout. Some teams will have a shorter All-Star break; they put some makeups games in there.

3) Louisville Cardinals hired Knicks’ assistant Kenny Payne as their new head coach; Payne is said to be a great recruiter. Louisville was 13-19 this season; he has some work to do.

2) Thursday/Friday are always two of my favorite days of the year; wall-to-wall basketball, plus this year, exhibition baseball starts. This should be an excellent weekend.

1) Just for the record, I’m picking Arizona Wildcats to win the national title.
