2021-22 COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONSENSUS SEASON PREDICTIONS & BEST BETS

The 2021-22 NCAA men's basketball season begins on Tuesday, November 9 as 358 schools will have the chance to begin their March Madness resumes.

Prior to every season, we poll our stable of College Basketball Experts on VegasInsider with their predictions on the upcoming season.

For this consensus predictions piece, we focused on the three most popular betting markets in the college hoops and received picks from 11 VI Experts.

Final Four Picks
National Championship Winner
Wooden Award Winner

Let’s take a closer look at the NCAA Basketball Predictions for the 2022 regular season.

FINAL FOUR PICKS
Consensus (Odds per DraftKings)

10 - Gonzaga (+190)
6 - Michigan (+330)
6 - Villanova (+380)
6 - Texas (+425)
4 - Memphis (+425)
3 - Duke (+425)
2 - Kansas (+450)
2 - Kentucky (+450)
2 - UCLA (+380)
2 - Purdue (+450)
1 - Alabama (+475)

Gonzaga is the heavy favorite this season, although the championship has avoided Mark Few and the Bulldogs on multiple occassions. Ironically, Big Ten favorites the Michigan Wolverines have the second-highest odds to win the championship despite the lack of success the conference has in capturing the title as well.

In fact, the last Big Ten team to win the National Champsionship was actually Maryland when they were still in the ACC. Our handicappers do like Villanova and Texas as possible threats to both Gonzaga and Michigan.

Despite the Bulldogs having Drew Timme and Michigan having Hunter Dickinson, Texas sees Minnesota transfer Marcus Carr come in with coach Chris Beard. Also, Villanova returns Collin Gillespie who missed last season with an injury.

Duke might be the most talked about team this season, mainly because its the last year for historic coach Mike Krzyzewski. Duke is favored in a competive ACC this season, and many expect the Blue Devils to be a relevant squad in Coach K's final tenure.

Purdue is a sleeper for many, performing well a season ago and returning key players in both the front and back court. Trevion Williams is a force in the paint while guard Jaden Ivey was one of the fastest growing players last season in terms of skill. He enters his second season as a leader after learning how to become one under Williams in 2020.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER
Consensus (Odds per DraftKings)

4 - Gonzaga (+650)
4 - Michigan (+1200)
1 - Kansas (+1600)
1 - Villanova (+1400)
1 - Duke (+1500)

Villanova has had the most recent success of the schools our handicappers feel have the best chance to cut down the final nets. As mentioned, the Big Ten and Gonzaga both struggle historically to finish the tournament all the way - while Jay Wright's Wildcats have won multiple championships over the last few seasons.

The feel good story will be Duke however, with added attention to the man who will take over Coach K's role in Jon Scheyer. If the story becomes an inspiration rather than a distraction, Duke should be a top team this season behind the play of Paolo Banchero.

Ochai Agbaji will be askded to carry the majority of the Kansas workload this season, as will Michigan's Dickinson. Gonzaga has two top players to watch in Timme and Chet Holmgren. The Bulldogs have the most weapons of the top teams entering the season, but are not as deep as they were a season ago.

WOODEN AWARD WINNER
Consensus (Odds per BetMGM)

4 - Drew Timme - Gonzaga (+600)
2 - Marcus Carr - Texas (+1600)
2 - Collin Gillespie - Villanova (+1600)
1 - Hunter Dickinson - Michigan (+800)
1 - Chet Holmgren - Gonzaga (+1000)
1 - Kofi Cockburn - Illinois (+1000)

To no surprise, Timme and his trademark moustache was the top selection among our expert handicappers. He showed out during the tournament last season and plays in a conference he should see stats fill up in. His teammate Holmgren is a popular choice as well, entering with better value but still not great considering his teammate is the favorite.

Both Carr and Gillespie are two of the most talented and experienced players in the country. GIllespie is on a mission after suffering an injury a year ago, while Carr is looking to re-establish himself as one of the best guards following an up-and-down career at Minnesota.

The Big Ten is riddled with dominant big men, as both Dickinson and Kofi Cockburn are at the top of the list. With Ayo Dosunmu now gone, expect Cockburn to be the main source of points for Illinois. Not listed but who should also be considered is Purdue's Williams, Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis and Ohio State's E.J. Liddell.

Another popular choice that's not listed is Johnny Juzang of UCLA. He showed how lethal of a scorer he is during the tournament, but health becomes an issue. UCLA saw a fair amount of injuries last season and Juzang has a history of getting hurt.

Week 1 of the college basketball season is finally here, with games beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Much has changed since last year's season, including top name coaches. Chris Beard filled to void left by Shaka Smart at Texas, as the latter went to Marquette.

Hubert Davis takes over the UNC Tar Heels with the retirement of Roy Williams, while although Mike Krzyzewski is coaching this season he is not far behind Williams. Jon Scheyer will be the replacement, and will see plenty of attention from the media this season.

Although coaches are moving around, some notable names are returning and are at the top of the 2022 Wooden Award list. Drew Timme of Gonzaga is the most notable name to return this season, while Hunter Dickinson dominated for Michigan as a freshman last season and looks to replicate something similar in 2022.

The Big 10 has some dominant big men despite the departure of 2021 Wooden Award winner Luka Garza. Illinois returns Kofi Cockburn, Purdue returns Trevion Williams and Ohio State returns E.J. Liddell. The final note to make entering the new season are the amount of schools that switched conferences. It's too many to name, but make sure you do your research thoroughly this season, as there is a lot of change to the college basketball landscape. Also, welcome St. Thomas!

Here are the Top 25 and bubble team rankings entering Week 1 of the college basketball season.

Wednesday’s Den: Wrapping up the first night of college basketball

Unusually busy Tuesday night; 183 college basketball games, 304 of the 358 D-I teams in action all over the country. NBA, NHL, three MAC football games. Remote got a workout tonight.

13) UC San Diego (+16.5) 80, California 67:
— Tritons are in their second year of D-I basketball.
— Cal led by 11 in first half, but went 5-18 on arc, 14-24 on foul line.
— Mark Fox went 10-28 in Pac-12 his first two years at Cal; this isn’t good.

12) Kansas 87, Michigan State 74:
— Agbaji scored 29 points, going 3-6 on arc, 8-8 on line.
— Usually better to play Izzo teams early in season; his teams start to gel after New Year’s.

11) Duke 79, Kentucky 71:
— Duke won despite going 1-13 on arc.
— Duke shot 30-48 (62.5%) inside arc.
— Kentucky big man Tshiebwe had 17 points, 19 rebounds.
— Rest of Wildcats shot 33% from floor.

10) Houston (-19) 83, Hofstra 75 OT
— Hofstra led by 13 points in second half.
— Houston was 15-25 on line, Hofstra 5-5.
— Hofstra was 12-42 on arc, 17-31 inside arc.

9) Western Illinois (+17) 75, Nebraska 74:
— Nebraska went 2-6 on foul line in final 0:55.
— Leathernecks outrebounded Nebraska, 57-37.
— Cornhuskers went 14-45 last two years; this isn’t good.

8) Navy (+15.5) 66, Virginia 58:
— Middies made 11-21 three-point shots.
— Navy outrebounded Virginia 35-30.

7) Northern Illinois (+19.5) 71, Washington 64:
— Huskies made 12-23 shots on the arc.
— Washington shot 26.7% from the floor.
— Washington was 20-38 last two years, now this……

6) Sacred Heart 86, LaSalle 81 OT:
— LaSalle hasn’t has winning season in A-14 since 2013.
— Sacred Heart out rebounded LaSalle 50-41.
— Atlantic 14 teams aren’t supposed to lose to NEC teams.

5) Citadel (+10.5) 78, Pittsburgh 63:
— Citadel had lost 46 in a row to ACC teams.
— Jason Roche was 8-14 from floor, all behind the arc.
— Pitt’s roster has been depleted by injuries/off-court stuff.

4) Miami OH (+10) 72, Georgia Tech 69:
— Miami outscored Tech 9-0 over final 2:29.
— RedHawks shot 57.6% inside arc, only 6-31 on arc.
— MAC teams stepped up pretty well Tuesday.

3) Ohio State (-16.5) 67, Akron 66
— Akron took lead on a 4-point play with 0:06 left.
— Buckeyes hit a short jumper in lane with 0:01 left for win.
— Ohio State led by 14 late in first half.

2) Indiana (-24.5) 68, Eastern Michigan 62:
— Mike Woodson wins his debut coaching his alma mater.
— Indiana led this game 40-19 early in 2nd half.
— EMU cut lead to 58-57 with 2:47 left; gutty effort.

1) All in all, an interesting day/night; 3pm games at Manhattan, Washington State got things underway. There is so much to sort out as teams start to play games with fans in stands, as we get a little closer to normal.

Did you know that neither Manhattan or Manhattanville are in Manhattan?

Eastern Michigan has 11 new players this year; they hung in pretty well at Indiana; who are the coaches who are best at putting together a roster quickly? Times have changed; not too many teams have a lot of continuity.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
NBA rebounding leaders:
15.9— Rudy Gobert, Utah
13.9— Jonas Valanciunas, NO
13.6— Nikola Jokic, Den
12.0— Jusuf Nurkic, Port
11.8— Christian Wood Hst, Bam Adebayo Mia
11.6— Jarrett Allen, Clev

Quote of the Day
“We don’t ever want a system that rewards being a lesser team. We have got a real cancer in this game. Now we know clubs will sacrifice seasons.”
baseball agent Scott Boras

Thursday’s quiz
Before moving to Oakland in 1968, what two cities did the A’s call home?

Wednesday’s quiz
Florida Gators won NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007, last time a college basketball team won consecutive national titles.

Tuesday’s quiz
Rex Grossman played QB for the Chicago Bears, last time they played in a Super Bowl.

************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Replay official for the Wake Forest-North Carolina game last week was a guy named Peter Vaas; he is also a football coach, working in the XFL as that league works towards a return to he field in 2023. Don’t see lot of coaches become officials.

Vaas was head coach at D-III Allegheny College from 1986-89, then at Holy Cross from 1992-95.

Since then, he was a coordinator in the CFL, a QB coach at Notre Dame/South Florida, and an offensive coordinator at Duke, Miami OH and in the WLAF.

Interesting resume; unusual for a coach to become an official.

12) Russell Wilson got the pin taken out of the injured finger on his passing hand, will start for the Seahawks when they visit Lambeau Field Sunday.

11) I’ll sound like the old guy preaching here, but that’s OK.

When Wilt Chamberlain was 35 years old, he played in every Lakers game that season, and he played 42.3 minutes/game that year.

Chamberlain shot 64.9% from the floor, grabbed 19.2 rebounds a game. No nights off for “load management” and teams played lot more back/backs in those days.

First eight years Artis Gilmore played in the ABA/NBA, he didn’t miss a game; 35.1 minutes/game was the least he played during that time. Again, no load management, no nights off, and his teams didn’t fly around the country on their own airplane.

10) Saturday’s Cal-USC football game was moved from this week to December 4th; Cal program has COVID issues, so the game has been pushed back.

9) AFC went 7-1 against the NFC this past weekend, now leads season series 24-22 in games between the two conferences.

8) Texas Rangers named Tim Hyers their new hitting coach; he spent the last five years at the Red Sox’ hitting coach. Hyers worked with Texas manager Chris Woodward, when both were coaching on the Dodgers’ staff in 2016-17.

7) Texas Tech hired 51-year old Baylor assistant Joey McGuire as their new football coach; McGure was in his fifth year at Baylor. McGuire signed a six-year contract worth $20.2M. He was a highly successful high school coach in Texas.

6) Tuesday night in Montreal, LA Kings scored a goal 0:06 into the third period, the quickest the Kings have ever scored a goal at the start of a period.

5) Los Angeles Angels fired their first base coach, third base coach and catching coach; must be their fault that the Angels’ pitching sucks.

4) JD Martinez declined to opt out of his Red Sox contract, will make $19.35M playing for Boston next season. Martinez hit .286 with 99 RBI this past season; he hit 42 doubles.

3) Dallas kicker Greg Zuerlein went on the COVID list Monday. Cowboys need a kicker.

2) Coppin State’s basketball team has a busy first week:
Tuesday— lost 103-45 at Loyola Chi
Wednesday— lost 97-72 at DePaul
Friday— at Rider
Saturday— at UConn

Guarantee games at DePaul/UConn help pay the bills.

1) Ivy League basketball teams didn’t play last season; Harvard basketball coach Tommy Amaker was put to work elsewhere— he was on a search committee that hired the next police chief for the Harvard campus police.
