One thing somebody just told me though, I am pretty sure in my province, legally waiters have to be paid minimum wage which currently is 10.00 dollar an hour. So yeah they are pretty well paid.

So a lot of the points made here to defend the servers doesn't really apply here in Canada only America.

Okay, so I am sticking with my original side. They are overpaid and spoiled.

In fact, some lawmakers here are arguing that it's unfair that they are making minimum wage when they make so much in tips. They are wanting to change that law and I hope they do.

So I guess it's much different in America.

Whichever poster told me to learn the basic system...you have no clue what you are talking about I guess. It's different here. Servers are overpaid and spoiled. Bottom line.

By the way, that chic I dated, worked at Earl's, she drove a Mercedes. All her friends were loaded too. They mock and laugh about these suckers tipping them large just to impress them when they probably make more than them.

I guess it's much different in the States. Maybe they do struggle to make ends meet and put up with very rude customers but totally different scene here.

Still interesting to hear both sides though.

Jaguara,

a waiter is working for you, not the restaurant. It's up to you to pay them.

If you want the restaurant to pay them (more than the government forces them to pay), expect to see it reflected in your menu prices.

tipping is the ultimate in capitalism, a good waiter or waitress will (should) be rewarded with more pay in the form of higher tips. poor workers will make less, and should eliminate themselves from the industry. restaurants that serve poor food will not attract high level wait staffs, and we as consumers will be left with great restaurants serving great food by great servers.

If you want to Obama it up and make it fair for everyone, then I suggest just raising menu prices 15% across the board and implement a no tipping policy and pay all the wait staff exactly the same per hour rate. we'll then be left with average food served by shitty waiters that spit in your food.

exactly........except for the last part....people always say that "spit in your food stuff"....i have worked in and around restaurants for many, many years, and have never known anyone to spit in anyone's food, no matter how upset they were about something......

that would be something unique to canada then....here in the U.S. minimum wager is 7.25/hr right now....servers start at 2.13/hr......

I can assure you in many, many restaurants in the USA if tipping werent the norm, and restaurants had to pay over 7.00/hr for each server, with the exception of your finer establishments, you can expect to see 1-2 servers on the floor for the whole restaurant....so don't expect that coffee refilled quickly, or those drinks from the bar brought extra quickly, cuz the restuarants profit margin, after paying kitchen, cleaning, etc, would be stretched by adding 5-6-7 servers at 7+ /hr, so they would cut back there, as food costs have gone up so much with the rise in fuel costs, that the profit margin is just not what it used to be

I love tipping waiters...it is like a game for us.

If they do really, really well they get a huge tip. If they do very poorly they get next to nothing and we usually don't go back to restaurant. We used to have a really nice steakhouse in town that we went to once a month - always got the same waiter and he always got the same tip - $100. He really made the experience fun, always hustled, called us by name, would cut up with us, etc...it was obvious he appreciated the money and we in turn appreciated his service. Some wait staff does make pretty decent money...got friends that pull 50k-60k a year for the gig and IMO this isn't bad for someone without any education. Of course they do work at nicer places, but it is not impossible to get a gig at those joints if you apply yourself.

wow, thats a very insulting generalization

As of Jan, 2012, the Federal Minimum wage is $ 7.25 an hour. Some States exceed that rate but I doubt that the difference is that much more. Where do you reside ?

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The minimum wage here is 10.00 per hour I believe.

at $10/ hour , I can certainly see tipping much less than 18%.

That must be why Canadians have the cheap reputation like teens and Blacks.

I don't know where you got that notion from. I'm sure whites are just as cheap as blacks, asians etc.

There's cheapskates or frugal people in all colors. I assure you Canadians aren't cheap. We live pretty well and spend money like water here. Times are good here.

I can promise you that NO restrurant in my area pays you the difference in min wage... Granted, I was a terrible waiter, and I certainly made under min wage. I asked about getting the difference, and nope.....

the standard pay for a waitress is still 2.13 and hour here.

its true though. now what most people dont know, is black people tend to tip there bartender better than white people. but even black people know they are poor tippers.

True story: Im hanging out with Derek, a 20 yo black male, we order pizza, said heres my part of tip for delivery guy/ he gave me the strangest look. he never even KNEW you were suppose to tip the pizza guy... no one in his family ever did... Also one of my best friends, a black guy, actually calls me to ask much to tip. haha pretty sure last weekend I got a call from him bragging how he tipped more than 100%. granted he was sitting at the bar for hours, and bartender only charged him 8 bucks for who knows how many rum n cokes... gave him $12. he was proud. most black people I know, know they are terrible tippers....

But if when I was bartending adn you told me we were going to have a "black" party at the bar, I was hyped. very entertaining and if you took care of them, they would take care of you.

The best tippers are always younger people that probably were a waitress, or still are. IMO

You are right. I should of said someone with a master's degree probably isn't going to be a waiter. If they are then more power to them - but it doesn't take much more than a HS diploma to get your foot in the door at a restaurant if you are serving.

I have known several people who honestly didn't know you were supposed to tip the pizza guy.

I should probably clarify my poop/piss comments (spitting happend multiple times). Poop only happened once and the guy was a grade A asshole. Mixed it in with the hamburger. We were a little drunk on the job (I know story gets better). Piss twice that I know of mixed in with mountain dew.

Like I said not something I'm proud of but it is what it is. Young and dumb.

Side note, last time I was at PF Changs started talking to the waiter about tips, who rents the back room and he said 2 nights before P Diddy or whatever his name is now rented out the room with 20 people and tipped $50 total. Waiter could get fired for telling me that but said the bill was huge and that's all he tipped. Also he was a huge DICK too. Not surprising really

Tipping isn't mandatory so it should be appreciated and not expected. I can understand the gratuity being added to the check of a large party because that party is requiring the extra special attention of a staff member.

Waiters and waitresses should be more understanding when they get a small tip. Instead of walking in the back room and telling their coworker all of the refills they did and take home boxes they handed out and extra napkins they brought to the table and wondering why they were tipped so lousy. They should consider that maybe the family they served are on a strict income and they can't afford to eat out too often and they tipped all that they can afford but appreciated the meal and the service.

Tired of hearing my job is so hard and the customers suck and my pay sucks. Well then get a more fulfilling job.
