Jaq if you are doing "well" then tip you cheap ass. Unless the service is awful 20% is what I tip, 25-30% if it's really good.

I worked at Little Caesars while in college and if someone was rude to us, I would spit, piss and shit in their pizza and so would my coworkers. Gross and I should have grown up but it is what it is. Also when I was a delivery driver and they didn't tip, same results. You would get "extra" in your pizza the next time I delivered it.

So jaq good for you for not tipping, but when your food comes and it smells like shit, it probably is.

wow u really shit on a pizza? how did you do that without it being so obvious? mix in the sauce?

I will always tip at least 20%. At a sports bar or OTB where you hang out longer than time it takes to eat a typical meal I probably tip 40%, but my bill only includes food since I'm not a drinker.

So people are naive or ignorant and don't even know they should tip. I tip for a couple of reasons. First off I don't want to be known as a cheapskate, and secondly I know thats how the waiters make their living.

also at most spots where you're a regular/semi-regular, if you tip well it will usually come back in a good way. every time there's a mis-pour it's mine if i want it, often when i get my tab there's a drink or two comp'd... it's not that they owe me, but they appreciate the tips and if they're able on a given night they'll show that appreciation. it's really beneficial for everyone imo.

And thats why they play the game.

If they didn't rely on tips, dont you think the level of service would be decreased. You're no longer as motivated to provide the excellent care..... not to mention, with waiting tables, ususally the better servers get the better sections..
.

This is the problem with the world today...if they didnt rely on tips they would be paid an hourly rate or salary...so, no, the level of service shouldn't go down. You should work hard for the pay that you receive and climb the ladder....if you dont like the pay, then find a higher paying job, dont take it out on the paying customer.

Just my opinion, not directly related to tipping, but people in general having a sense of entitlement and such...

Oh I completely agree that this generation, which I'm included in, feels a sense of entitlement. Definitely a problem.....

However if anyone has ever pissed or shit in anyones food, that's pretty low. If one of my friends told me that, I would seriously question a really question my friendship with that person. Disgusting. Cowardly.

And I love the tipping concept. If you think service is bad now.
I could not imagine how bad it would be with no incentive to give good service.

People who think it would be better the other way have no concept of business or human nature.

Imo a good waiter/waitress can really enhance your meal by providing good service. I have no problem tipping over 20%. I find that if I come back to that restaurant and get that person again, he/she often remembers and our table is pretty much guaranteed to receive excellent service.

I have never been a waiter but from what I understand most do not make minimum wage because they receive tips. So, yes they should expect tips, but they should not automatically expect 15-20% or more. Tipping should be based on service, not on looks. I consider myself a good tipper and have tipped as much as 40% but also as little as a quarter. And the quarter tip I left was at a Hooters. Went one time and will never go again. The service was atrocious and the waitress waiting on us just didn't seem to care. Maybe it was because it was me and my wife and she was more concerned with the tables that had men drooling over her. Either way, she gave us terrible service and Im sure she realized it when we left and she picked up her 25 cents. But I always tip...

Pretty much sums up myself as well.

What I don't like are the businesses who lump all tips together and split among everyone, because we all know that some aren't pulling their weight while others are, yet they are getting the same total tip-amount.

If I have a very good waiter or waitress, I will usually ask them if they keep all tips or if they have to split them.

If they do tell me that the place pools the tips, I hand them their tip personally and say "This Is For You And You Only" and "If if anyone has a problem with it they can see me".

I had no idea some eat places do that. I knew casinos did but did not know eating places did that to.
The defeats the whole concept of rewarding good service.
I will be sure to find out which places do this in the future .

I still think restaurants should pay their waiters and have the prices reflected in our food. It's annoying when waiters make a face when they were expecting more

So why do you refuse to go to restaurants that use that system and instead go to places where tipping is seen as a requirement?

I love tipping waiters...it is like a game for us.

If they do really, really well they get a huge tip. If they do very poorly they get next to nothing and we usually don't go back to restaurant. We used to have a really nice steakhouse in town that we went to once a month - always got the same waiter and he always got the same tip - $100. He really made the experience fun, always hustled, called us by name, would cut up with us, etc...it was obvious he appreciated the money and we in turn appreciated his service. Some wait staff does make pretty decent money...got friends that pull 50k-60k a year for the gig and IMO this isn't bad for someone without any education. Of course they do work at nicer places, but it is not impossible to get a gig at those joints if you apply yourself.

I'd rather see the best servers make more than mediocre ones via better tips. When you pay everybody the same you get worse service like robotic BJ dealers or postal workers.

Because of the fact that at the end of the day it really isn't that big of a deal to me. It was late, I had a few drinks and it was something that popped into my head so I started a thread.

What the thread really should have been about is those that feel they are entitled to a certain amount in tips and give you attitude when they didn't get 30% or more or whatever just because they flashed some smiles, made small talk etc.

At the end of the day it isn't so bad. Again, don't get me wrong. My range when tipping is 15% to crazy amounts if I'm in a good mood and was happy with the service. I'm very generous.

After reading some of posts here, especially the comments about how restaurants are allowed to pay less than minimum wage I guess it's all good. I see their points.
