In the Northeast waiters/bartenders still only make $2.50-$3.50 per hour... out here it's different they're paid minimum wage. No idea how the Midwest and South do it.

Typical cheap ass Canadian.

Reminds me of a joke a Jamaican friend told me.

What the difference between a canoe and a Canadian?

the only thing that pisses me off about tipping is when you see bills inflated by liqour that they take their 18 gratuity out of. not that i can come close dropping cash like nba stars, but when you see a bill for like 60k for a night out a club and they charge 18% gratutity for say 12k on like an ace of spades champeign bottle, 4 bottles of vodka, 10 jager bombs, and 2 cases of red bull. lol you could organize that shit in 5 mins and get it ready, and your getting a 12k tip. get the fuck out of here

pretty sure that joke is told with many people replacing the word canadian

My buddy lives in Buffalo. He was in the restaurant business for many years. This is actually a spot on stereotype for Canadians.

The majority leave shit for tips according to him.

As explained, servers only make minimum wage and depend on tips to make a living.

Back in the day, my GF used to be a cocktail waitress at the Desert Inn when the hotel was in it's hey-day. She told me that when she was working the main lounge, she was pissed when she "only" made $500 a day. She told me that at Xmas and New Years, they easily made 4 figures a day, and that was after tipping off to the bartender and bar backs.

Jag why do you think the only type of hard work is manual labor? I have done both and dealing with asshole customers is A LOT worse.

That girl I dated used to brag about how sorryass guys would come in there tipping her crazy amounts to impress her and she would laugh with her coworkers in the back about how she probably makes twice what that loser that tipped her makes.

This is true.... Guys who sit ar a bar, hooters, or strip club feeding these girls money and thinking they're 'getting somewhere' with them, really make themselves look foolish ..

You chose your job knowing full well what the wage is. Why is it my job to supplement your income? I also blame the restaurant industry for not paying a proper wage which pressures the customer into tipping

If a restaurant paid waitstaff a salary equal to what they currently earn from tips, it would require them to charge higher menu prices. The total cost to the customer would remain the same

If that is what people preferred, any restaurant insist it's customers do not tip, while letting them know that they higher cost of the meal is being passed on to employees. The reason no restaurant does that is because so few customers want that

The blame for why tipping is required falls on the customers who demand it remains that way. The business and the labor just follow along with how the customers choose to spend their money

If your hatred for the system outweighs how much enjoyment you get from your burger, stop eating at restaurants. If you can't understand why the system exists, spend some time learning highschool level economics

Jaq if you are doing "well" then tip you cheap ass. Unless the service is awful 20% is what I tip, 25-30% if it's really good.

I worked at Little Caesars while in college and if someone was rude to us, I would spit, piss and shit in their pizza and so would my coworkers. Gross and I should have grown up but it is what it is. Also when I was a delivery driver and they didn't tip, same results. You would get "extra" in your pizza the next time I delivered it.

So jaq good for you for not tipping, but when your food comes and it smells like shit, it probably is.

Jaguara,

a waiter is working for you, not the restaurant. It's up to you to pay them.

If you want the restaurant to pay them (more than the government forces them to pay), expect to see it reflected in your menu prices.

tipping is the ultimate in capitalism, a good waiter or waitress will (should) be rewarded with more pay in the form of higher tips. poor workers will make less, and should eliminate themselves from the industry. restaurants that serve poor food will not attract high level wait staffs, and we as consumers will be left with great restaurants serving great food by great servers.

If you want to Obama it up and make it fair for everyone, then I suggest just raising menu prices 15% across the board and implement a no tipping policy and pay all the wait staff exactly the same per hour rate. we'll then be left with average food served by shitty waiters that spit in your food.

Hey, that gives me a different perspective. It does. You made a good point. I'm glad I made this thread. Learn something new everyday.

I'm young. I don't know everything but I'll listen and learn when it comes to something I don't have firsthand experience in.

That's gross man. Why would you do that? Yet the first poster that responded in this thread, oh noway, nobody is spitting in your food. Yeah right. I'm sure it happens a lot. That's why I always tip. Who needs that crap in their life..or in their food. Haha...hahahah....no...we have fun.

worked at the Outback Steak House in Scottsdale, Arizona. Unless you kissed ass to the managers, was there more than 3 years or was a hottie, you usually got two 2 tops in the bar area for the night. Unless they are ordering the prime rib and tons of drinks, you were lucky to squeeze out $40 a night in tips while the double d's with two 4 tops was walking with $200. F them and their bs pins that you earn for good service. That job only lasted 3 months...

I still think restaurants should pay their waiters and have the prices reflected in our food. It's annoying when waiters make a face when they were expecting more.

As I said before, I do tip. I always tip and tip fairly. It's just some of these people think we owe them a 40% tip or something just cause they look pretty or smiled and made small talk with us. Luckily most places I go especially my favorite place, the waiters/waitresses are cool.

There's this one restaurant in my city, Earl's. They only hire wannabe models(literally) and those guys/chics are the worst. Snotty and feel they are entitled to more than they deserve.

If they didn't rely on tips, dont you think the level of service would be decreased. You're no longer as motivated to provide the excellent care..... not to mention, with waiting tables, ususally the better servers get the better sections... yes its true it helps to be a girl... but in the end , the better servers are rewarded with the best section.... its very competitive within the staff to get the better sections..

I was a waiter for a while, a terrible one at that..... my wife was a waitress from 16 until the time she got her nursing job. it's not an easy job. you work for respect to get those better sections, and then its bust your ass to make some money. and it's surprising the number of people that treat their waitresses poorly.....

I am a big tipper, 20% is my norm.. will go up to 30%...

Also what a lot of people fail to understand, is if you are out drinking somewhere and you are there for several hours, you should be tipping more than 20%. You took up there table, so they couldn't flip it... the worst example being if you are at a bar watching a game, 3.5 hours your tab is only $30, you should be tipping $15 IMO. they took care of you for 3+ hours..... you took over there table for 3+hours...

I respect good service and the job they do. its not easy.

I dont care about giving a tip but as long as they earned it. If the food was not so good thats not their fault, just as long as my drink is never empty and they are friendly then I always tip
