Once people found and were able to gamble on other stuff legally, horse racings popularity declined rapidly.

If it wasn't for gambling I doubt it would even be a sport.

True....... I see pools at tracks and if not for off site gambling they would not read what they are. Then again, whats sports w/o wagering?

Wow. No shit. You think the NFL would be as popular w/o gambling? You should watch Let It Ride when Teri Garr comes to the track and asks do you have to bet on them? Do the Patriots cheat? Yes that is why there is horse racing. When the Indians didn't run casinos, that is what Americans bet on. Now we turned into zombies who get a thrill pushing a knob every five seconds and watching shit spin around and getting 75 cents for every dollar they put in. Give me a form and a race every half hour and I'm happy. Give me a field of 20 3-year-old colts on the first Saturday of May; I'll let you watch two mid-30-year-olds go 12 rounds that night.

W/o all forms of gambling lets say the NFL loses 1/4th of its revenue/following at most. Horse racing probably loses 80-90% (w/ gambling it has lost almost half of its following in the past decade from what I've read)

I agree casino gambling is mindless and boring if it is a game with fixed odds. Between that, the lottery and even internet gambling I think it all came together in the decline of horse racing.

Another thing is suburbanization, horse racing always been an older persons hobby and a lot of old people stopped going/don't live near tracks anymore.

Seems like they should stream all the races on youtube to try to renew interest.

i voted fight and i live in ky. it seems there is usually a good ppv fight on most derby days for some reason. i can remember for several yrs watching the derby at 530 and then switching over to ppv for the fight buildup and uc bouts. 1st sat in may is great no doubt

In all seriousness, I understand the Derby is an event... I'm sure it's a blast to be there, drink, go to the concerts, flirt with the ladies in the hats... But as a sporting event on tv, I could really care less... I think most of america - even sports fans dont care.

Gamblers and old guys is what I think of when I think of horse racing

Over $130 MILLION wagered on the 2+ minute Event that America doesn't care about face)(*^%
