its not even about time, its just hard to get into sitting thru 2 intermissions, could you imagine if football had a long break after every quarter?

What do you do during intermission??..Get more beers there ain't no breaks during the periods, but you seem like a guy that likes commercials better than the game....like all the girls that watch the superbowl

Great sport but tired old argument. People either love hockey, watch only the playoffs or dislike the game. Much of the problem involves the game is ill suited for TV viewing (like soccer). Bottom line is once you become a fan usually you stay a fan and like every one of the big four US sports fans want their team to win and like every one of the big four, only one team can win it all every year.

All four sports have their drawbacks - baseball is slow and can be boring, football has flashes of action and then a minute or two of nothing (not to mention zebras), The NBA is a fourth quarter game when all is said and done. The problem with hockey is the rules are complicated, the scoring is infrequent but if you understand how the game is played it is very exciting to watch.

Using US TV ratings a an argument that the sport is boring is unfair, just look at fan attendance per game HERE. Someone likes the sport when you see numbers like those.

This year's playoffs were not as bad as one might think as far as TV ratings goes FWIW:
NEW YORK -- The Boston Bruins' Stanley Cup-clinching victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night earned the highest television rating for an NHL game in 37 years.

Boston's 4-0 win in Game 7 on NBC earned a 4.8 rating and 8 share. That's the best since a 7.6/27 for Boston-Philadelphia in 1974.
It's up 2 percent from last year's deciding Game 6 between Chicago and Philadelphia and up 12 percent from the most recent Game 7 in 2009 between Detroit and Pittsburgh.

The seven games averaged 4.6 million viewers on NBC and Versus, the most for a series split between network and cable involving a Canadian team.

The game earned a 43.4/64 in Boston, the best for a hockey game since records began being kept for the market in 1991. That's higher than any game in the Celtics' last two NBA finals.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program. Shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time.
