I have a friend that was a real estate developer in CR. He was "arrested" and spent over a year in jail. They took everything he had. The initially put him in a shit-hole prison, hoping he'd break. They offered for him to sign over all of his assets and leave the country....but he refused. He eventually spent every dollar he had and got the US gov't involved and was released. He can't go back there every again and lost every penny he had. He originally developed a very successful boutique hotel in San Juan and then bought a bunch of land near the ocean, and built a development w/ lots. That's when they moved in on him. His story is unreal listening to. So much corruption. Everyone from his bartenders at the hotel to the local police to local politicians were involved.

Yeah the corruption there is by far the worst i've seen in my lifetime.

my story is similar although in a South American country and never went to jail. But was also in real estate development and made a lot of money. Knew numerous politicians, judges, etc, all corrupt. Took my Latino wife and came back to the US six years ago. They never took my cash but felt it coming. Lost most in casinos here in the US. Still have property there.

Very sad to hear .... so Young

I don't have any facts, but I find it very strange that he was without his bodyguards .... so My OPINION is there was some kind of inside job

Time Spent there I can tell you for sure most anyone with Money had some kind of protection, including where you live.
and you still have to watch your back.

Prayers go out to Tony and his Family

Good observation Mike....any Bookmaker/owner worth anything have body guards in Costa Rica...just hope this isn’t the start of anything going forward...

“Authorities are working on key leads.
Late last week, Diario Extra reported that a security guard who worked in the 5Dimes office is also under heavy scrutiny as is another individual, believed to have worked security at a nearby educational instruction center.”

If you own or run a Sportsbook there, you're going to Live there.

Outside of that business, there are a lot of other businesses there that will also take you there and live there long term

also a lot of ex-pats that retire there, much cheaper than the States. In those cases most of them don't live in that area CR.
there's so much more than the Sportsbook areas to enjoy.

Rule of thumb when I first stepped foot in CR. Don't wear Flashy Jewelry, Don't flash a wad of Money, and don't be cocky. You never know who's watching
because the locals don't make a lot of money, and the Cops can be easily bought

not only can they be easily bought but most of the time are in business with the criminals. When my house was robbed down south the police came there three days later and asked which way did they go, lol, as if they were in hot pursuit.

Everything about his disappearance is suspect to me. The late reporting by his wife, did money get paid, was this an inside job, has the body been positively identified. I dont know what to think and I am very suspicious of what really happened.

Dont buy that because generally speaking it is hard to extradite someone from Costa Rica.

The US tried to get CR to extradite him several years ago and they refused since the activities were all a result of his sports book which is naturally legal there. He also was a CR citizen as well as had children that are CR citizens. They typically don’t extradite under any circumstances when you have naturalized children much less when the activity is legal in that country. Hell, it’s becoming legal here now in many states, now that the govt is getting the lions share all those “moral” dilemmas conveniently disappeared.

He probably would’ve been able to come back one day if he would’ve paid some substantial back taxes.

Creighton and his wife have been targets of U.S. investigations because of 5Dimes’ sports betting activities. In 2016, an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security concluded that 5Dimes devised a mechanism to collect from and reward gamblers living in the United States with Amazon gift cards.

thats exactly why they tried to have him extradited. His ex who I mentioned earlier who used to live a few miles from me received around 700K in gift cards, gold coins, etc. she now lives in Pitt and I would think has problems with them. But CR had no intentions of extraditing him. All of that was finding a way to transfer money to players as well as to friends/family derived from sports betting. A legal activity in CR.
