But GoSooners, you just proved my point. There is still great music out there. Everyone generation says their music was the best and the new stuff sucks. Oldies stations in the future will be good just the same because only the best music survives any time period. The 60's and 70's were full of horrible music as well.
I still don't think you have the great songwriters today like they did in the past. I'm talking about an artist making a volume of music that will hold up over time. I just haven't seen any Dylan's, Springsteen's or Young's out there. It's not really totally the fault of this generation. In my time we had musicians and artists creating music in their living rooms for days and weeks on end. I know because i was around many musicians like this. They literally slept with their guitars, and lived on frozen pizzas and pot.Today we have computers, video games, blackberry's, cable tv, and many more distractions that take the time and creativity away from young artists. Plus the record companies really suck. They are all looking for the next Lady Gaga, ****** Bieber or American Idol winner instead of seeking out truely creative artists that should be signed and slowly brought along by their record companies. Nobody has any patience any more. And aren't willing to take chances on new bands/artists.

Exactly, I frequent different music forums and the young kids like 16 and under are always defending this generations music. When I was a kid in the 90s that was me defending 90s music. I still love 90s music the most.

King you and I are cut from the same cloth on this topic bruh.

Yep, I agree with you on this. Do you know any good new bands? Maybe GoSooners will be convinced there is still good stuff out there.

The reason why music sucks now is because Rock music is pretty much dead now. Pop and Rap are pretty much it, and while there is some good rap most of it is crap, and don't get me started on pop music. Sid Vicious just might have been right when he said punk music was the final evolution of rock.

I was born in 1980 and I listen to 60's 70's 80's 90's and even some of the new stuff once in awhile. I guess that debunks some of these opinions on here.

Saw it today.

Chose it over Sanctum and it actually turned out to be pretty decent, unlike what the critics had to say about it and exactly why I don't pay any attention to them...

you would choose that movie or sanctum :ohno: Should have done yourself a favor and went to watch true grit.

I disagree about what you and I grew up with being my influence. I'm just as open to good music made today than I was back then. But I just don't hear very many memorable bands or individual artists who write great music on a consistent basis. Honestly, tell me a good songwriter/band that has come along starting in the 80's to now that your going to remember 40 or 50 years from now like you do the Dylan's, Neil Young's, or the Springsteen's of the past. I think the last great bands that we've had were U2 and maybe the Police. But still, those bands even started in the 70's. And neither of them are American bands.

Chili Peppers
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Dave Mathews Band
AC DC
Van Halen

The list goes on and on.

Heard Sanctum really stinks and that James Cameron was an idiot to promote it with his name on it.

Of course, that's the critics talking again, and it's never a good idea to listen to anything those tight-azzes have to say.

I'll pass on True Grit, I can't stand old westerns much less new ones! haha

I think you guys are still misunderstanding what I'm trying to say. I agree with you that there are still some decent bands out there making good music. But I still haven't seen that one artist/group that has come out and knocked my socks off with music that I'm going to remember 40 years from now. And then turned around and repeated it over and over like the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Young, Springsteen did. There hasn't been anybody come along in the last 30 years that I would consider that "special" kind of talent. I also don't want you to think it's a generational bias thing. I actually think the generation before me were much more creative than my generation. They are the ones who invented Jazz and the Blues. And my generation simply ripped off and updated their sound. I hear a lot of that sound in the early Stones, Led Zeppelin, Doors music. And even the generations before them wrote the best symphony and opera music in history. And has never been surpassed by today's artists. That's why their still playing symphony's from the 1700's & 1800's. Today we have a whole new generation of music called hip hop and rap. And I don't think this so-called music will ever stand the test of time because it has no melody, and very little song structure...I don't even remember any of this music that was done in the 90's, much less be remembered 40 years from now. I still think much of the downfall in today's music has to do with the record companies than anything else. You've got to have that one breakout hit or you have to look or dress different if your going to be signed. Your songwriting alone won't cut it today. Same goes for movies. You have to be very lucky to be able to get your independent movie picked up by a major studio. Slumdog Millionaire did it a couple years ago. But it doesn't happen very often. Studios are still looking for their 500 million dollar blockbuster paycheck more than a well acted creative independent movie. This is why many of your best movies in the last 20 years have come from Europe. Their more willing to take chances with their film makers.

What new music do you consider great? I understand that music is subjective, but to compare now to the 60's/early 70's is craziness, IMO. Sure there were a lot of shitty bands but bands like The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd etc will be remembered forever. There is no new band that can hold a candle to those guys.

I'm not a big music listener myself so I'm not the person to ask but I have sat radio and I just tune into random channels and like what I hear. There's some french music channel that plays good music. Arcade Fire is a good band that's relatively modern. Muse is another one.

I think there's something deeper here about music and why we like it at a certain age. I look at it the same way as a child playing with toys. In a way you outgrew interest in it.

Really? Pearl Jam came out in the 90's. Nirvana came out in the 90's. Dave Mathews Band shouldn't be anywhere near that list. AC/DC came out in the 70's. Van Halen came out in the 70's.

To me, the early 90's was the 2nd best era in rock music. However, the entire decades of the 80's and 00's sucked ass.

You're telling me DMD doesn't compare with any of these bands? Have you ever looked at their album sales and concert attendance numbers?

If U2 doesn't do this for you then I don't know what else to say.

I'd say you can if you have many years of success and not just a musician that's a "flash in the pan or one hit wonder."

DMB has been around for years and years with success at all levels from the very start.
