U2 started in the 70's

Come on Sooners...don't play that game. They formed as a band in 1976 and came out with The Joshua Tree in 1987. If you want to say they came out in the '70's then carry on.

Okay, one band that actually formed in the 80's that I thought were in the "extra special" category was Guadalcanal Diary. Their standing in the shadows of the big man and 2x4 albums I consider certified classics. They had a sound that was a little similar to REM. But I've seen both of these bands, and GC could play circles around REM. Unfortunatly they broke up in 1989 and never acheived the radio play they deserved or else I think they would have probably reached greatness like U2 or REM did in their later years.. Breaking up has been the downfall of many a great band. A friend of mine who was a guitar player for a few bands in California. And he's played on the undercard of some good west coast acts. But he told me one time that there's always one person in every band that ruins it for everybody else. And it's hard as hell and almost impossible to find the right chemistry and direction for every member in a band. And they end up splitting. It's a shame that egos got in the way of some of these bands. But it's hard as hell to make it as a band. Your almost better off going solo if you have the talent.

Really don't know how in 40 years you wouldn't remember Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli or even Metallica. Very hard for me to believe.

It's because all of these bands catered to a certain niche audience. They didn't/don't have popular mass appeal to all audiences. Your probably never going to hear Metallica's music being played in a car commercial 30 years from now.

I don't mind the remakes so much because it gives the next generation a chance to watch a movie that was enjoyed decades earlier. Sometimes an older movie can lose some of its appeal when witnessed by the next generation because it can seem outdated and the time period and setting isn't something they can relate too.

The reboots I can do without. Spiderman and Superman seem to be stuck in a time loop in Hollywood. I hope they keep progressing the Batman franchise even if Nolan and Bale aren't involved.

The retreaded hollywood scripts are kind of annoying but its just to show case some good looking actor/actress looks and not their acting ability. The Roommate being the same as Single White Female, Fast & The Furious being the same script as Point Break. I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of retread to Revenge Of The Nerds. It would be pretty cool to see what the Tri Lambdas could do to the jocks with all of today's technology.

Heard Sanctum really stinks and that James Cameron was an idiot to promote it with his name on it.

Of course, that's the critics talking again, and it's never a good idea to listen to anything those tight-azzes have to say.

I'll pass on True Grit, I can't stand old westerns much less new ones! haha

Ha ha says the guy that watches little hobbits throw rocks and each other!

Yeah-Yeah........I know.......... I admit it haha

But I'm confident enough with my manhood I can admit that I like Lord Of The Rings and Today's Pop Music.....LOL
I don't have to pretend to be a tough guy on the computer.

I did see your post earlier debunking the theory on each person's music preference and that it had a lot to do with what they grew up on. I do feel that is the case with the majority, but like yourself I enjoy all or most genres of music..

You guys are cracked listing all this has been music as "great" music.

From the earlier generation we have (just to name a few):
1. Black Sabbath (first album, unnamed)
2. Led Zeppelin IV and parts of Physical Graffiti, Kashmir is amazing when played correctly.
3. Jefferson Airplane, listen to one of their good live albums, their studio work blows, check out Bless Its Pointed Little Head
4. Procol Harum Listen to one of their good live albums.
5. King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King, Red
6. Credence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son, Born on the Bayou and a dozen other songs
7. Free - Find one of their better live offerings, all their studio albums suck.
8. Hawkwind - Space Ritual. Simply amazing.
9. Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs, amazing guitar player.
10. Hot Tuna, any of their early stuff. Especially if you can find it live.
11. Velvet Underground, especially their live work.
12. Fleetwood Mac, any of their early stuff
13. Joe Cocker - are you kidding me? You think ANYONE comes close to Cocker.
14. The Doors - do I need to even say anything? Oh, I guess Nirvana is a match for the Doors, give me a freaking break.
15. Jimi Hendrix, you have to wade through lots of crap to get to his good stuff. I like his live set at Woodstock
16. Janis Joplin - seriously, you crackheads can name a modern female singer who can come close to Janis?
17. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Between Nothingness and Eternity. A simply amazing live recording. Amazing.
18. Genesis. Their early work, not that Phil Collins and his backup band crap. Especially like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
19. Yes. Their first live album. Also Tales From Topographic Oceans is pretty amazing. Most of their other work simply sucks.
20. Weather Report. Mysterious Traveller. I really hate Jazz, but I LOVE this album.
21. Humble Pie. Listen to "Live at the Filmore" LOUD and tell me that freakin' Nervana or any of the other modern day faggots come close to this.
22. The Stooges. I don't like punk rock but the Stooges invented it. If you like punk rock and you don't know The Stooges then you don't really know anything about punk rock.
23. Roky Erickson. You never heard of him but he rocks.
24. The Kinks. Oh, and you thought the Beatles, The Stones, and The Who were good, crackheads.
25. The Rolling Stones, those of you who hate the Stones have not heard their music from 1964 to 1972. Some of it is pretty amazing. After 1972 they totally suck.
26. The Band. Two great albums. 'Music from the big pink' and 'The Band'.
27. Thin Lizzy. Any song that features Phil Lynnot and DOES NOT include Gary Moore. Can someone kill Gary Moore please?
28. Gram Parsons. Lots of ways to listen to Gram. WONDERFUL solo work, The Byrds (a short stint), Flying Burrito Brothers and International Submarine Band
29. The Who. Their work in the 60s and early 70s. They should have disbanded when Keith died. See Me Feel Me and the refrain from Listening To You was one of the high points of Woodstock.
30. MC5. Kick Out The Jams. When I heard Grand Funk Railroad for the first time, Are You Ready, I thought, "oh good another MC5" then Are You Ready ended and Grand Funk RR really sucks. Oh well.
31. Lou Reed. He made a lot of crap, but he also made some really good music. Berlin and Transformer deserve a listen.
32. Frank Zappa. This guy is an amazing guitar player. If you doubt this listen to his live recording of "The Whipping Post". This dude does some really great music, and he does some crap, and he does some bizarro world stuff. I am including Mothers of Invention with Zappa. If you have the time to listen to his/their 100+ albums you can find some really great music. Put on your wading boots though, because you will have to wade through a lot of hogwash.
33. Cream. When they were good they were really really really good, and when they were bad they were really really really bad. It is a shame that Eric Clapton stopped playing the guitar. Live Cream and Live Cream II are pretty amazing.

I'm not big on movie remakes. But movies made again with conituing sagas can be and have been pretty good in the past when the done right. The Godfather 1 & 2, Star Wars and Lord Of the Rings for example. But Hollywood also has a tendecy to suck these themes dry. The Godfather probably could have done without number 3. And there was one later remake of Star Wars that stunk. Hollywood sometimes just don't know when to leave well enough alone. I didn't really need to see Jaws 3D either.
