BTW, Soccer is shown on espn2. There is an english premier league game in HD every saturday morning.

I love the NBA. NHL I have a hard time following the puck and telling the players apart. Also I hate it when I miss a score and they don't replay it much. I just don't like the way NHL games are produced for TV. I'm sure they are fun to go to though.

Isn't sport about great,exciting, interesting events? Who cares who does It? Bucky Dent hits a clutch hr off torrez..Why do you need to know the players name, to enjoy a game?

Simple answer: Every ghetto in the USA has a basketball court. Basketball is easily accesible in the USA.

The NHL product has not been as good as it is today for a very long time.

The NBA, seems like the players go through the motions, night in and night out.

The NHL has done quite well in America. There are more American teams in places that don't snow compared to the number of Canadian teams.

Simple answer: Every ghetto in the USA has a basketball court. Basketball is easily accesible in the USA.

This is true.. It is much easier for youth to play hoops than hockey.. For one hockey is not a cheap sport and people can't skate outside in the lower half of the country.. NBA is more popular but as the thread states, the NHL does put out a better product and THEY DO NOT BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME.. Fights do happen but it is much better than it was... Hockey players especially the middle of the road, the average player has to play hard every night or their ass will be scratched from the line up the next night.. Not so in the NBA. The average player can suck and not hustle and still be starting or seeing a lot of action off the bench the following night.. Pathetic

Guess creativity is what we most like about the NBA stars though can't do anything about their mood and motivation for a single game...

All the other top American sports are way lower in following over here but things are changing there too (not to mention the teams where we have some involvement as well - HEY to Kopitar and the Kings - hope he gets hot again )

If nothing else people started following sports bettigwise but the final result is the same as the next time one already knows smtg about those and starts following the team or sport itself.

Hockey is obviously more popular outside of the US. Notice how soccer isn't broadcast on ESPN or ABC but it's extremely popular? You need to think more before you post. It's mind boggling how little fanfare the NHL playoffs get. The action is tremendous and the tension is incredible in close games/overtime games. Not to mention, they don't take 3-4 days off in between games like the freaking NBA, whose playoffs are by far the biggest joke in all of sports.

Philly, Washington, and Minnesota chose hockey over their NBA teams. Detroit, San Francisco, Denver and New York are about even. The Bruins draw great in Boston. Keep in mind those numbers are only for US audiences in those towns.

Being from Philadelphia I can tell you that the Flyers have a way bigger following then the Sixers. For as bad as the Flyers have been this year every game is still sold out. I don't think the Sixers have sold out a game since they lost to the Lakers in the Championship.

The allure of the David vs Goliath is what makes the Big Dance. I'll never forget the buzz when Valpo made that Sweet-16 run a few years back. Anyone who has ever been to Valpo's campus would understand.

Speaking of NHL playoffs, you are about to hear a major uproar when the playoffs start. Versus is still not on Directv, and I have already missed 5-6 Blackhawks games. Any sportsbar worth its salt has Directv and nothing else. Can't put a price on the bad press Directv and Verses (Comcast-owned) will take in this PR nightmare.

wow, how you could possibly have been around the game as much as you claimed and not have learned a thing about the game? it blows my mind. The putting it on ice to be unique, seriously???hno: take baseball off a diamond and you got cricket, is mlb just trying to be unique? Its a different game, requiring a different skillset. Is nfl just trying to be unique by changing it's rules cause it could be taken as a rugby clone to the casual observer. Is mma, just trying to be unique boxing? Ridiculous statement.

As for takes little skill to play, another wow. Hockey requires the hand eye of baseball, the physicality of football and the high end speed of a bball player drivin the hoop all at the same time. I don't dismiss basketball at all, the talent and creativity is incredible but Lebron drives the hoops and gets touched he's on the line, Ovechkin dekes around 3 players at top speed and gets crunched by a 6'3 220 pound dman he jumps back up and gets back to work and remembers that dman for his next shift so he can dish a little back. To watch what these guys are capable of doing blows your mind. Hockey really emphasizes what sports is about, guys workin their tails off, it's physical, it's fast, it's creative. The game as it is right now is a casualty of poor marketing and being banished to the television equivalent of Siberia but as for the quality of the product right now, it couldn't be any better.

When I first started watching hockey I thought it was boring. Just passing a puck up and down the damn ice. I can understand why someone would not like to watch it.

However, I kept watching it with a friend when the Miracle on Ice was going on. He explained to me some of the rules and strategy and I could see small battles being won during simple things such as bringing the puck up the ice. It was a fast and exciting game after that.
