OK, revisions, I had the seedings wrong:

Looking at:

  • Carolina -1.5 need win for playoffs.... regular play
  • Minny -1.5 Boston, nothing to play for... small
  • SL -1.5 fighting for higher seed and and home ice, small
  • Nashville -1.5, same as Blues, small
  • Edmonton -1.5, home game vs SJ 1-8 (lately, nothing to play for), small

Not final, comments welcome...!

Different opinions... if NYI (99) lose, they have no shot at # 1 seed, and even can be caught by Pitt (97) correct?

Washington (102) can wrap up #1 tonight but could back door tonight if NYI loses or beat them next game.

Do I have this right?

Well I went with (all -1.5) Carolina regular, & small on Minny, Blues, Nashville, and Edmonton.

I think after tonight there will be some great lame duck opportunities, we shall see.

Caps win metro but the last game isn’t for nothing. Islanders need the win for home ice over Pitt. There are other ways that could happen but it’s automatic with an islanders win. Expect Copley in net for wash for sure but also expect a real effort from the islanders needing a win for a first round home ice advantage over Pitt. Washington may actually let this game go as they would rather see islanders with home ice increasing the chance Pitt gets knocked out. I’d say islanders will win in wash rather easily now. Meaningless for wash yet very important for ny.

Great thread, Serbone -- thank you!
Stars begin a back to back in Chicago tonight and home vs Minny tomorrow. Mathematically they could climb a spot but not sure they are that motivated to do so. Kinda like the Hawks tonight. No Benn, Bishop, or Zuccarello tonight for the Stars though Khudobin has been very good so missing Bishop not that big a deal. Just don't see them bringing much tonight but do like them tomorrow against Minny in last home game. Crowd will be loud and happy as they make the playoffs for the first time in 3 years.

Excellent information, much appreciated.
And Hawks played well vs Blues recently, won shootout. Coach extended I think so they’re playing for development next year perhaps.

Why would the Caps like to see an increased chance the Pens get knocked out in a first round series with NYI? If NYI knock out the Pens, they'll probably play TB. Would the Caps prefer the NYI play TB or the Pens play TB? I'd think the Pens would have a better chance of knocking out TB than the NYI. And that the Caps would rather see TB eliminated instead of the Pens.

They don’t reseed so assuming the caps win the first round they play the nyi/pit winner. Unless the format changed again. Caps would only see tb in the final and Tampa would have to go through the Boston/Toronto winner.

for a few years now the caps and pens would always play in the second round and it was frustrating. unless one gets in as a wildcard and goes to the other side of the bracket they will never play in a conference championship.

Today, looking for teams:

  • that can get or help to get home ice advantage with a win
  • that are at home against a road team that does not givashit, preferably that are on the upswing despite being out of the playoffs
  • that are playing a playoff team that is definitely resting players (especially goalies)
  • when in doubt, take home team in any meaningless game...

first glance:

  • Blues in home ice fight today at home vs Canucks
  • Nashville in home ice fight play Hawks coming off last nights win
  • NYI can help their situation @ Washington
  • Detroit is at home and has been playing well, tonight faltering Buffalo visits
  • Winnipeg is in 3 way fight with Blues and Predators, by the time they play they will know the Blues outcome and most of the Predators game
  • Carolina clinched and are on the road but Philly hard to back
  • Columbus clinched last night now travels to goddam Ottawa, they might not show up
  • Colorado clinched Thurs, travels to SJ

Hard to know, these are all pros, some will play hard to the end, but there should be some opportunities... not interested in TB/Boston early game, let me know your thoughts.

It seems you are right. My mistake. So the Caps have nothing to play for tonight? I wonder if they'll be resting some players.
