Adding punts would only increase his value in return-yardage leagues, and give him another way to find the end zone in standard settings. He's an every-week starter regardless of format.

It's not clear if that's three weeks from practicing or playing, though SI.com's Peter King took it to mean Rice will play in the final eight games of the season. We can't guarantee that Rice will be ready to contribute before mid-November, but this news confirms that he's well worth stashing in 10- and 12-team leagues. Brett Favre, if he stays healthy and suspension free, will see a spike production in the second half.

Harvin's missed and limited practice time can be maddening for fantasy owners, but it's a good sign that he wasn't held out entirely. There's no reason to believe that he's in danger of missing Sunday night's big divisional contest in Green Bay.

He was working with Vikings WRs coach George Stewart. It's the first "football activity" Rice has done since undergoing hip surgery in August. "Slowly but surely" is how beat writer Tom Pelissero described Rice's progress. He's still unlikely to play before Week 10 or so, but a late-season return is at least looking possible. Rice has yet to be activated from PUP.

Sidney Rice - WR - Vikings Sidney Rice (PUP, hip) still has no timetable for a return after jogging and catching passes on Wednesday.
He classified his rehab as "great" but cautioned against reading too much into his football activities at this point. "I was jogging around," said Rice. "I wasn't doing routes." The Vikes have two weeks to activate him from the PUP list. October 28 - 6:36 p.m. ET

The Pio Press passes along that Harvin was "limping severely" in the locker room after the game. "It's hurting pretty bad and it probably was adrenaline that got me through," Harvin told reporters. "I couldn't do much but I was able to fight through it. Go and see the trainers Monday and we'll know then." Harvin is almost certain to miss practice time this week.

Rice "didn't appear hindered by the injury," according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, while Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press confirms that what Rice was able to do "looked encouraging," even if he's still "rusty, as expected." Rice isn't likely to play in Week 9, but could return for Week 10.

We won't have a good idea as to Harvin's status until Friday at the earliest. He'll be a game-day decision.

Harvin was sporting a noticeable limp after taking part in the pre-practice walkthrough. Coach Brad Childress, who initially expected Harvin to play this week, is no longer as sure. Chilly noted that Harvin "hasn't made much progress," seemingly putting his status in doubt for Sunday. Check back Friday to see if Harvin can at least put in a limited practice.

Sidney Rice - WR - Vikings Coach Brad Childress indicated Thursday that there's still no timetable for Sidney Rice (hip) to return to game action.
Chilly conceded that Rice "most probably" won't play Sunday. "My offensive coordinator's tempted to want to (play him). But we're erring on the side of caution, at least for this week," added Childress. Rice reported normal tightness and muscle fatigue after Wednesday's practice, but he's had no setbacks with his hip. Harvin missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, and it would be a stretch to think he'll be able to finish practice today after this report. There's a good chance he'll be a game-time decision come Sunday, but owners need to prepare as if Percy won't be available.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>The Vikings won't rush Rice into a full-time role. He's reportedly looked better than expected in practice, but will need to show in games that his surgically repaired hip can hold up. If it does, Rice's snaps will gradually increase. Even if Rice is active in Week 10, we'd hesitate to use him in fantasy leagues against the Bears. He's certainly worth a roster spot, though.

Coach Brad Childress apparently had a slip of the tongue when he called Harvin "doubtful" earlier in the day. All the beat writers in Minnesota expect Harvin to face the Bears after he returned to practice on Friday, and it's a good bet that he will. Harvin's latest migraine didn't concern team officials as much as previous headaches. Pencil him into fantasy lineups.

Sidney Rice - WR - Vikings Citing two sources, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Sidney Rice (hip) "is expected" to make his 2010 debut Sunday at Chicago.
The decision -- to be made by Rice -- won't be finalized until a Saturday light practice, but the contract-year wideout entered the week expecting to play in Week 10 and has avoided setbacks. Rice is expected to be activated to the 53-man roster tomorrow, although he's not remotely a quality fantasy play at less than 100 percent, on a snap count, and in an unfavorable matchup. The Bears have allowed a league-low five touchdown passes this season. November 12 - 7:05 p.m. ET

"Tough guy," added Chilly. Harvin, who's yet to miss a game, ranks ninth among all wide receivers in fantasy points, and has at least 104 receiving yards or a touchdown in seven straight games. He's likely to miss more practice this week, but Harvin should be ready to face Green Bay in Week 11.

Rosenhaus said he was "hopeful (Rice) will be healthy enough to play this week" and that they didn't give "any consideration to him not playing this season." Vikings beat writers Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins are on record as predicting Rice wouldn't risk a return this season and listed Rosenhaus as a major reason why. It sounds like their prediction won't come to fruition, though. Rice started practicing earlier this month and was looking like a "go" for Week 10 but ultimately decided he wasn't quite ready. He has to be activated by next Wednesday or will be placed on I.R.
