Central Conn. St. Blue Devils vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018
NCAAB PREDICTIONS BY GRACENOTE
A smallish Virginia Tech squad didn't have any real problems rebounding in wins over Purdue and four low mid-major programs to begin the season, but the 12th-ranked Hokies got pounded on the boards by Penn State. Virginia Tech looks to rebound from a heartbreaking loss when it begins a three-game homestand against Central Connecticut State on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions secured 14 offensive rebounds against a lineup that played only one player taller than 6-6, forced 15 turnovers and withstood two scoring chances in the final 13 seconds to take down the Hokies 63-62 on Tuesday. "If an opponent is getting 44 percent of their offensive misses, that puts you in a negative position. I think that was the first time this year that we had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio (nine assists)," coach Buzz Williams said afterwards. "So if the opponent is going to shoot more balls than you are, then you've got to make for sure that you don't give them extra possessions with turnovers and try as best as you can to slow their offensive rebounds." Justin Robinson led four players in double figures with 19 points, Ty Outlaw added 16 off the bench and each player drained four 3-pointers in a combined 11 attempts. Central Connecticut, which won 14 games last season after just 15 the previous three years combined, fell behind 15-2 early en route to a 72-60 loss at North Carolina AT&T on Thursday.

ABOUT CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE (4-4): Junior Joe Hugley (11.9 points, 14-for-33 on 3-pointers) posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds against North Carolina AT&T, while freshman guard Ian Krishnan added 14 points as CCSU shot 31 percent from the field and 4-of-23 from 3-point range. The Blue Devils are led by 6-5 Tyler Kohl, one of two Division I players last season to average 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The senior leads the team in scoring (20.0 points), rebounds (7.1) and assists (4.5) again this season but didn't start Thursday and played only two minutes. Krishnan has been a pleasant surprise, averaging 15.6 points and shooting 39.6 percent beyond the arc.
ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (5-1): Robinson (16.2 points, 14-of-29 3-pointers, 5.3 assists) connected on 6-of-12 from the floor and 6-10 Kerry Blackshear finished with 14 points and nine rebounds - the most boards by a Hokie this season. Outlaw, who missed all of last season because of knee surgery, has drained 9-of-14 from 3-point range over the last two games and scored 31 points after shooting 4-of-13 from the arc and averaging four points in the first four. Sophomore Nickeil Alexander-Walker leads the team in scoring (18.5 points) while shooting 52.4 percent and contributing 5.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.5 steals, while senior Ahmed Hill delivers 12.8 points and shoots 14-of-28 beyond the arc for a team that shoots 42.8 from long-range.

2. The Hokies have made at least 10 3-pointers in five of six games this season.
3. Robinson and Alexander-Walker have scored in double figures in every game this season.
