South Carolina coach Will Muschamp mentioned before the season he would like for his Gamecocks to spend this week practicing, with the hopes of being in Saturday's SEC championship game in Atlanta. Instead, the Gamecocks will host Akron on Saturday in a matchup announced earlier this month - giving South Carolina a 12th regular-season contest after its Sept. 15 game with Marshall was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.


While the destination is the Gamecocks' home in Columbia, S.C., some 215 miles east of where Alabama and Georgia will meet for the conference title, Muschamp still sees plenty of positives in opening December with a game. "Our goal is to go to Atlanta, and to go to Atlanta, you'll be practicing this time next year," Muschamp told reporters Tuesday. Even though it fell to second-ranked Clemson 56-35 last week, South Carolina brings plenty of momentum into Saturday after quarterback Jake Bentley passed for 510 yards and five touchdowns against a Tigers defense allowing just 14 points per game. The Zips, who upset Big Ten West champion Northwestern earlier this season, has lost four in a row after last week's 49-28 defeat at Ohio.

ABOUT AKRON (4-7): The Zips also sought a 12th game to round out their schedule after the Sept. 1 contest at Nebraska was canceled due to lightning. Quarterback Kato Nelson has passed for 2,151 yards and 15 touchdowns (four last week), wide receiver Andre Williams has six touchdowns and 49 total receptions, and linebacker John Lako leads the team with 118 tackles. Akron is sixth nationally with four defensive touchdowns, but has scored 17 points or fewer in six games.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (6-5): Bentley is tied for third in the SEC with 24 passing touchdowns and sixth in passing yardage at 2,754. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel caught 10 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns against Clemson, giving him 849 yards receiving (fifth in the league) and nine scores (tied for fourth). South Carolina has won three of its past five games, including a 49-9 non-conference victory over Chattanooga on Nov. 17.


EXTRA POINTS


1. South Carolina failed to convert twice on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line against Clemson, yet still finished with five touchdowns on 11 possessions.


2. The Gamecocks are sixth in the SEC in total offense at 445.3 yards per game, finishing last week with 600.

California Golden Bears vs. St. Mary's Gaels Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018

Fully healthy for the first time in nearly a year, California guard Juhwan Harris-Dyson could be a surprising difference-maker during Pac-12 play. The 6-5 sophomore looks to take another step forward Saturday when the Bears visit Saint Mary's, which has lost four in a row since opening the season with three straight wins.


Harris-Dyson battled illness-related issues for much of last year and missed this season's opener against Yale with a hand injury, but the Southern California native scored a career-high 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting with four steals over 30 minutes in last Monday's 78-66 win over Santa Clara. "He was spectacular," coach Wyking Jones told reporters. "He was what we've been waiting to see from him. Defensively he was a beast. He picked his shots, he got the shots that he wanted. It was really, really good to see him back in form and giving us that spark offensively off the bench." Five players scored in double figures in the win for the Bears, who will need a repeat performance against a Saint Mary's team that was picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference preseason poll but has struggled early.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (2-3): Freshman guard Matt Bradley scored a season-high 18 points against Santa Clara while sophomore forward Justice Sueing bounced back from a rough outing against Temple with 11 points and six rebounds. Jones continues to be impressed by Bradley, who scored nine straight points late in the win over Santa Clara and averages 10.8 points on 54.5 percent shooting. Junior point guard Paris Austin averages 15.6 points to lead the Bears, who are shooting 42 percent from 3-point range after shooting 28.6 percent last season.


ABOUT SAINT MARY'S (3-4): The Gaels averaged 60 points in back-to-back losses to Utah State and Mississippi State in Las Vegas before opening a four-game homestand with losses to Harvard and UC Irvine. Junior guard Jordan Ford, averaging a team-high 23.1 points and shooting 86.5 percent from the foul line, scored 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting in last Wednesday's 80-75 to UC Irvine. The Gaels figure to have the edge near the basket against Cal with 6-8 forward Malik Fitts and 6-10 center Jordan Hunter, who has averaged 12 points and five rebounds over the last two games.

Oregon Ducks vs. Houston Cougars Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018

No. 21 Oregon looks to bounce back from its shocking loss when it visits unbeaten Houston on Saturday. The Ducks fell at home to Texas Southern on Monday and are afraid that type of non-conference loss could haunt them come Selection Sunday.


"There's no way to put it, it was a terrible loss and we're going to have to overcome that," Oregon junior guard Payton Pritchard told reporters. "We know that we really don't have that much margin of error left and we got to win. We know where we're at and it's another challenge we got to go for." The Ducks lacked physical play in the loss and were ineffective defensively without injured sophomore forward Kenny Wooten in the second half. The Cougars - who will bring an 19-game win streak from their temporary stay at Texas Southern's H&PE Arena to the opening of their Fertitta Center on Saturday - should give Oregon another physical test. The Cougars are led offensively by sharp-shooting upperclassmen, but get contributions from post players Breaon Brady, Brison Gresham and Cedrick Alley Jr.

ABOUT OREGON (4-2): Bol Bol, a 7-2 freshman center, leads the Ducks with 21.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game after recording three double-doubles this season. Pritchard adds 14.5 points and 5.3 assists per contest while five other Ducks - including Wooten - average at least 5.3 points. Wooten (5.3 points, 5.0 rebounds) practiced this week after bruising his knee against Texas Southern and is expected to play.


ABOUT HOUSTON (5-0): Senior guard Corey Davis Jr. leads the Cougars with 20 points per contest and junior guard Armoni Brooks adds 14.0. Brady, a 6-8 senior, averages 8.6 points on a team-best 73.1 percent shooting and a team-high 6.6 rebounds. The Cougars have three starters - Davis, Brooks and senior Galen Robinson Jr. (8.4 points, 6.0 assists) - shooting at least 40 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Washington State looks to follow up its first 100-point performance in regulation since 2002 with another big effort when the Cougars visit New Mexico State for a non-conference matchup on Saturday night. Washington State shot 51.4 percent from the field and drained 15 shots from 3-point range in a 103-94 victory over Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, but coach Ernie Kent did not like the way the Cougars finished the contest.


"Sometimes you get a big lead like that, you lose your focus and that's exactly what happened in the last 10 minutes of the game," Kent told reporters. ". ... What this group has to know is we're going into an environment in New Mexico State that if you let that crowd (work) on you and not play smart for 40 minutes, you can be in for some deep trouble." Senior forward Robert Franks, who leads the Cougars in scoring (26.8) and rebounds (8.8), missed the team's only loss at Seattle and Washington State hopes to snap a streak of seven straight losses in true road games against non-conference opponents - dating back to 2013. The Aggies come in with a three-game winning streak after knocking off UTEP 62-58 on Wednesday and their only loss was at home against Saint Mary's on Nov. 14. New Mexico State, ranked first in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, boasts five players averaging between eight and 13 points.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (4-1): Franks has connected on 56.9 percent from the field and the Cougars have received 13 points and 6.7 rebounds per game from his frontcourt partner Isaiah Wade, but the junior is questionable with a undisclosed injury. Freshman forward CJ Elleby produced season highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds against Cal State Northridge to push his averages to 11.4 and 7.8, respectively. Senior guard Viont'e Daniels (10.0 points, team-high 5.2 assists) scored a season-best 14 points in the last game and leads the Cougars with 13 makes from 3-point range.


ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE (5-1): A.J. Harris leads the balanced Aggies with 13 points per game, despite scoring six Wednesday, and is shooting 50 percent from the field while fellow junior guard Terrell Brown has contributed 11.5 and has made 12-of-26 from 3-point range. Junior forward Ivan Aurrecoechea from Spain scored a season-high 15 points last time out and is averaging 11 on 61.4 percent shooting in five games. Senior forward Eli Chuha (8.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 58.6 percent shooting) missed the last game with a back injury and is questionable for Saturday.

Northwestern State Demons vs. UTEP Miners Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018
NCAAB PREDICTIONS


The Northwestern St. Demons have lost 4 of their last 5 and they are a bad basketball team! They opened up the season with a huge win to the tune of 102-62, that was against Centenary! Of course, they had to beat Centenary 40, had they not, then there would have been even more serious problems. This team has no players, they don’t recruit, they have no coaching and they have no vision. This is another team in the long list of many that water down the NCAA Division I. This team should be a member of the NAIA. They would at least compete on some level. In Division I, they will never compete on any level. They are really this bad! They were beaten by SMU 69-58, then by BYU 82-57, Rice 102-74, Houston 82-55. They did get a win over Alabama A&M but that took overtime, 70-66. On the 27th, they lost to Louisiana Monroe, 80-52. As we were saying, this team is as bad as it gets and even worse. Everyone that’s anyone that’s even slightly associated with this basketball program, they all need to be fired immediately!


The UTEP Miners is not a whole lot better than the Demons, however, the vision of the program seems to want to include a winning future. This certainly doesn’t mean they are not loosing now, they are losing and have lost the last 4 of 5 games. In fairness to UTEP, they have had a weird schedule, to say the least, and a bit of a difficult one. They opened the season against Texas Permian Basin with a 90-63 win, then two straight losses to New Mexico State and the Arizona Wildcats, both blowouts losses. They beat Eastern New Mexico on the 19th, a Division II school and now they have lost their last two games against New Mexico and New Mexico State. The good news, they don’t face any team from New Mexico the rest of the season, that nightmare is behind them. The bad news, they face a tough Conference USA schedule that will be hard for them to pick up nearly any wins. They simply do not have the player personnel.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN STATE (2018-19 2-5): A really bad team that’s reeling from terrible losses and terrible coaching, that has no plan whatsoever. They are scoring 66.9 points per game but allowing 77.6 per game and shooting just 38.6%. They are managing 10 rebounds a game, that’s a good number but with nothing else, they are still broke. It’s fortunate they are playing such a bad team in UTEP, they actually have a chance to win this game and this thing could be close. In fact, we think it will be close.


ABOUT UTEP (2018-19 2-4): The Miners are pretty much in the same boat as the Demons; stinking it up every time they play. The numbers are very close across the stat board. They are scoring 67.8 points per game and allowing 73.8 but the big difference is in shooting percentage, the Miners come in at 44.7% shooting and 37.3 rebounds per game but just 11.3 assists. That’s just one more assist than the Demons. Let’s face it, the teams a train wreck, both of these teams are a train wreck and for that very reason, this will be a fun game to watch and bet on. This one will for sure go in the 150s and a lot of pints will be scored, somebody has to win this game. Which stinker will it be? We think that at home and given that fact that the Miners have lost one less than the Demons, this offers some redeeming value.


EXTRA POINTS


1. Ishmael Lane is the man, the only man for the Demons and he had better step up huge against the Miners. Lane is averaging 14.3 points per game and 7 rebounds, he must use his body and bang the boards.


2. Sophomore guard Evan Gilyard is averaging 20.3 points per game for the Miners and he is their bread and butter. How he goes the team doesn’t necessarily go but if he doesn’t go, and get a pile, the Miners are sunk. They need this guy and in a huge way.


3. This one goes in the 150s and maybe beyond, these two beat each other up in a close battle.

Baylor Bears vs. Wichita St. Shockers Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018

A meeting between Baylor and Wichita State in just about any other season this decade would have been a showdown between two teams potentially poised for a deep run in March. Two programs accustomed to averaging well over 20 wins per season but struggling to find their way in 2018-19 square off Saturday when the Bears visit the Shockers.


Baylor expected to rely on transfers early after losing most of its rotation following last season, but a sprained right ankle delayed the debut of Makai Mason and a season-opening six-game suspension for a violation of unspecified team rules kept Mario Kegler sidelined. The Bears dropped two of their first five games in a season for the first time since 2005-06 before getting their first look at the roster they envisioned in Tuesday's 63-57 home win against South Dakota. The Shockers' start could have been expected after losing all five starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team, although they have been competitive in every game - including four-point losses to Davidson and Alabama in the Charleston Classic. Wichita State, which has alternated wins and losses so far, finally enjoyed the kind of dominant performance Sunday it has typically enjoyed in 12 seasons under coach Gregg Marshall, routing Rice 90-61 to end a four-game stretch in which every contest was decided by six or fewer points.

Freshman Dexter Dennis (9.2) has recently been able to avoid the foul trouble that plagued him in early November and turned in his best two performances over the last two contests, finishing with 19 points against Alabama and 11 versus Rice. "I'm starting to adjust to how the college refs call the game. I foul with my hands and now I'm trying to be in the right position early, so I don't have to foul when I'm late," Dennis said in a postgame radio interview.

Cornell Big Red vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018

Syracuse is coming off its best game of the season and should have little trouble notching its 39th straight victory over Cornell on Saturday night at the Carrier Dome. The visiting Orange shut down No. 16 Ohio State 72-62 in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge victory Wednesday that prompted Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann to tell reporters about Syracuse's vaunted defense: "It's like going to the dentist and not just for a cleaning."


The Orange are led by junior guard Tyus Battle, who averages 18 points after scoring 20 versus Ohio State and was among those who made his coach happy. "For the first time this year I've seen us play like we need to play," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told reporters. "That's a pretty good sign." The Big Red, who were picked to finish sixth in the Ivy League preseason poll, are coming off a 63-58 victory in overtime at Lafayette on Wednesday. Cornell 6-8 sophomore forward Jimmy Boeheim will play against his father for the second time after scoring 11 versus the Orange in his collegiate debut -- a 77-45 loss last season.

ABOUT CORNELL (4-3): Senior guard Matt Morgan is averaging 23.6 points - most among Ivy League players and among the top 10 nationally - despite being held to 12 points versus Lafayette and also grabs a team-high 6.4 rebounds. Boeheim is the only other Big Red player averaging double-figure points at 11.7 but has been inconsistent this season with games of 20, nine, eight, 23, 15, three and four points. Cornell struggles from 3-point range with Morgan shooting 49.1 percent from beyond the arc while his teammates make 22.5 percent.


ABOUT SYRACUSE (4-2): Junior forward Elijah Hughes (15.3 points per game) and sophomore forward Oshae Brissett (14.7) are the team's other top offensive threats, and combined with Battle to score 34 of the Orange's 43 second-half points versus Ohio State. Frank Howard, who was second to Battle nationally in minutes played last season 39.0 to 38.3, continues to work his way back into shape with a combined 11 points and six assists in 43 minutes over the last two games after missing the first four contests with a leg injury. Brissett grabs a team-high 7.5 rebounds with sophomore forward Bourama Sidibe next at 5.0 despite averaging only 13.5 minutes.

Missouri St. Bears vs. Oregon St. Beavers Preview and Predictions 12-01-2018

Oregon State looks to win its third straight game when it hosts Missouri State in a non-conference contest Saturday. The Beavers are coming off a 75-72 victory over Long Beach State on Sunday, while the Bears have dropped four in a row after starting the season 3-0.


Junior forward Tres Tinkle has been a force for Oregon State, averaging 20.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists to lead the team in all three categories. Senior guard Stephen Thompson Jr. has contributed 15.7 points, while younger brother Ethan Thompson, a sophomore, is the Beavers' third double-figure scorer at 10.2. Kylor Kelley, a 7-0 junior, anchors the Oregon State defense, leading the Pac-12 and ranking fourth in the nation with 3.2 blocked shots a game despite playing only 18.8 minutes. Junior guard Keandre Cook (16.1 points), senior guard Jarred Dixon (15.4) and junior forward Tulio Da Silva (14.5) lead the Bears' offense.

ABOUT MISSOURI STATE (3-4): Coach Dana Ford took the blame for the Bears' worst loss of the season, an 88-69 setback to Air Force on Wednesday in which the Falcons shot 17-of-28 from 3-point range. Ford went to a zone for most of the game, believing that Air Force's shooters wouldn't be able to counteract the positives of the Bears' zone, a move that Ford will likely stay away from in the future. Another move he made that he might change was adding Ryan Kreklow and Da Silva into the starting lineup for Szymon Wojcik and Cook after the new starting five struggled from the start, allowing Air Force to run out to a 40-19 first-half lead.


ABOUT OREGON STATE (5-1): Coach Wayne Tinkle has some lineup juggling to do after it was found that senior center Gligorije Rakocevic has a stress fracture in his left foot and could be out 4-to-6 weeks. The 6-11 Rakocevic had started all six games for the Beavers this season, averaging 8.2 points on 67.7 percent shooting and 4.2 rebounds after averaging 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds Tinkle may go with Kelley as a starter, with Warren Washington getting more time after he's averaged 6.6 minutes in five appearances this season.

It's been a long, tiring week for Miami but it looks to get back on track on Saturday when it faces Yale in the fourth game of the day in the Hoophall Miami Invitational at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Hurricanes opened the season with five straight victories but they dropped their last two, including a 57-54 loss to Rutgers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge that was Miami's first nonconference home loss since Nov. 27, 2015.


The Hurricanes' loss to Rutgers certainly wasn't helped by their fatigue after they had just returned from a trip to California for the Wooden Legacy, where they went 2-1 over four days. Nor their lack of depth, which was stretched even further due to illness (Anthony Mack) and leg cramps/dehydration (Ebuka Izundu). "Our energy level was sapped," Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga told reporters afterward. "The flight over is 3,000 miles, the flight back is 3,000 miles, you play three games over four days. We have a very short bench, only seven guys (in the rotation). ... Our guys could all use a break to rest and recover but we just don't have the bodies." The lack of energy resulted in sloppy ball-handling and the shots just didn't fall as they were held to their lowest point total of the season (54) after coming in averaging 84 points a game.

ABOUT YALE (2-2): With four players averaging in double figures -- Miye Oni (16.0 points per game), Jordan Bruner (13.5), Azar Swain (13.3) and Alex Copeland (12.3) -- the Bulldogs can shoot, twice scoring over 100 points this season, including a 103-61 rout of Bryant their last time out. Their specialty is long-range bombs as they are hitting 45.7 percent (42-of-92) from beyond the arc, fourth best in the nation, after a scintillating 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the win over Bryant, one short of the school record of 16. Swain is Yale's top gun with 15 3-pointers on 57.7 percent shooting, but he and his teammates will face a Hurricanes' defense that has been frustrating 3-point shooters, giving up just 27.9 percent of their long-distance shots (second lowest in the ACC).


ABOUT MIAMI (5-2): The Hurricanes couldn't find their game offensively against Rutgers, hitting just 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field, but they need to in a hurry against the hot-shooting Bulldogs. The team especially needs more from sophomore guard Chris Lykes, who has been careless with the ball of late -- 14 turnovers in the last three games after a total of eight in the first four -- and he finished with just eight points in the loss to Rutgers, far off his team-leading 17.7 average and the first time he failed to score at least 17 points. The Hurricanes are the only team in the ACC with five players -- all starters -- averaging in double figures with Izundu, a senior center, close to averaging a double-double with 11.4 points and nine rebounds per game.

1. The Hurricanes own a 4-2 edge in the series with Yale, but the schools last met back in 1986.


2. This is the third straight season that the Hurricanes were invited to compete in the Hoophall Miami Invitational and they are 2-0 in the tournament.

The James Madison Dukes may be 5-3 coming into this game but they have acquired this record by way of beating some very insignificant programs such as East Mennonite, East Carolina, Bridgewater, Charlotte, Northern Illinois, and Coppin State. Oakland beat them in their one other loss, 77-69. State. Coppin State took them to overtime, and they lost in overtime to the Citadel. Now they are facing a team that allows just 57.4 points per game and outrebounds them by 3 per game. The Dukes need to get motivated! This is a motivational problem, not an X's and O’s or fundamentals problem. They desperately need for third-year coach Louis Rowe to get his act together and motivate these guys. They should be playing better.


The Old Dominion Monarchs have won two in a row and one of those wins came against VCU, 62-52. The rest of the wins are solid but nothing to write home about, such as |Navy, Kennesaw State, and Northern Iowa. The schedule simply isn’t there. I guess we are stumped here as to why the matchup indicator and consensus says that Old Dominion is a lock. Is it the VCU game? These two are two peas in a pod and one can beat the other just as easily. Don’t expect a blowout of any sort and expect this one to be good. It will go to the wire. The one thing the Monarchs have is defense and if that holds up, then they win the game with no question. James Madison is allowing 71 points per game and that’s simply way too many, they are only outscoring themselves by 5 points.

ABOUT JAMES MADISON (2018-19 5-3): The Dukes are scoring 76 points per game and allowing 71 along with 45.9% shooting from the field. They are pulling down 37.4 rebounds and 13.4 assists per game. All in all, not bad at all, but again, the strength of schedule is important to remember. Neither team will be blowing the other out. We see the defense and we like the defense. Teams that play defense win games over time. Old Dominion will be tough to beat if they allow 57.4 in this one.


ABOUT OLD DOMINION (2018-19 4-3): The Monarchs have beaten one team that maybe matters, VCU. Other than this game, nothing matters when looking at this matchup with the Dukes. The Monarchs are scoring 62.7 points per game but only allowing 57.4 The Dukes are scoring 19 more per game than what the Monarchs allow and are being outscored by 14. On paper, this is a James Madison win. All day and all night. Look, this Monarchs team is not the Michigan Wolverines! Michigan is allowing 49 points per game and they are killing people. They have also played teams like North Carolina and Villanova. There simply is no strength of schedule of any kind to weigh any of the defensive numbers against.

1. Stuckey Mosley is averaging 16.7 points for the Dukes and he better plan on coming strong. Madison need his numbers in this game


2. Ahmad Carver lights it up nightly with 18 points per game and 4 rebounds. The Monarchs need their stars tonight much more than James Madison does. B.J. Stith will be a factor as well with 8.2 ppg, along with 5.1 rebounds.


3. This game can go one of two ways, the Monarchs will dig in and play the 57 points they give up nightly, or they run with the Dukes. If they run, this game hit 140 points with ease, if they put the hammer down, this games goes in the 120s. We say they run. The Dukes will open this game up in the second half and everybody runs.
