My friend was jailed for rape, wrongly, for two years before being exonerated by belated DNA testing. It was a f****g nightmare for him, and worse, the real rapist actually committed two more rapes subsequent to the original crime my friend was bagged for. Essentially, my friend was convicted on a he said/she said testimony, and since he couldn't afford a real lawyer, the public defender was way out of his league. The case was miserably handled, most notably with the lack of immediate DNA testing.
Contrary to popular belief, DNA testing is rarely conducted on an immediate basis as it costs over $15,000, and unless the defense pays for it or the case is deemed significantly important enough to the community, the DNA is not going to be used if the judge feels the case can be tried without it. At least that's how it is here in Nevada.
In fact, he couldn't even get off the sex offender registry for 6 months after he was EXONERATED, that's how screwed up the system is. Of course, being on the registry pretty much kept him from decent work and he had to live in his car until he was finally propagated out of the system.
So I'm not so much to jump on the vigilante bandwagon for such a serious charge as rape anymore, though the vigilante gene in my body is as strong as the next red-blooded male.
