Still at it... Hoke's hiring is paying dividends. He steals a recruit from A&M
Oregon Ducks get late 2016 addition
in defensive tackle Ratu Mafileo
Brady Hoke will enter his first season as Oregon's defensive coordinator with some more depth on the defensive line. Ratu Mafileo, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound junior college transfer from Honolulu, announced Tuesday on Twitter that he will be playing for the Ducks in 2016 after verbal committing to Texas A&M.
Hoke could use all the help he can get at defensive tackle as the former Michigan coach transitions Oregon to a 4-3 base scheme.
"With a lot of thinking and with a lot of talking, although I am verbally committed to Texas A&M, I feel more comfortable signing to the University of Oregon this fall," Mafileo tweeted. "Very thankful for this opportunity and it'll be a fun season."
Defensive end Henry Mondeaux, nose guard Austin Maloata and linebackers-turned-defensive ends Torrodney Prevot and Justin Hollins emerged as potential impact players on Hoke's reshuffled defensive line during spring practice.
Defensive tackle Canton Kaumatule, a former five-star recruit, wasn't able to get on the field consistently.
Mafileo had 34 tackles (7.0 tackles for loss) and two sacks last season at the College of San Mateo in 2015.
Kampmoyer, Wayne Kirby and Bryson Young are the other defensive linemen in the 2016 recruiting class.
The Ducks open fall camp next Monday.
