Olb's coach left to take the DC position at central Florida under Scott frost and DC don pellum has stepped down back into his original role as Lbs coach and recruiting coordinator.... Great move by helfrich and the program....

Now.....

this is where it should get interesting, reports have it that Oregon is finally ready to go looking for a big name externally...I don't know anything more than that, but my guys in Eugene are starting to hear that Oregon will be doing a lot of searching around the country for the right DC, should be cool to see where they go.

id love to see Phil snow from temple or the San Diego state DC, those two guys have to be on your list in my opinion...

heres bed to making a splash

No matter what they do the defense won't ever get past being mediocre too decent.
I'll take decent.... Give me the 2009 defense every year and the ducks are likely in the playoffs every year lol.... I'll take that all day every year haha... I'm not asking for alabam as defense, although, that would be pretty damn cool, I'm just asking for 50th nationally, not 105th..... It's not unreasonable to suggest that a 50th ranked defense and top 10 offense wouldn't routinely get you to the postseason.. From there it's all about getting hot at the right time.

Not Phil Snow. He's coached at just about every school in the PAC12 although, if I remember correctly, he always had some ball hawking DB's. I believe he was at Temple last I remember.

GoSooners has made a point about Oregon at least two or three times that I have read.

Chip Kelly is no longer the head coach for the Ducks.

Someone else is and he ain't Chip Kelly.

As an Oregon fan you have to look at this Scenario as a positive...the ducks are finally seeking help on the defensive end of things from an outside source. It's ok to promote from within but since 2009 the defense has been trending down.... That means it's time to consider some new ideas and new candidates.... Wilcox is ok but probably wouldn't be a great fit, more of a lateral move. Snow would be a big upgrade just in my own opinion. I'm sure they will entertain a plethora of candidates but I would assume they try to hire someone within the next month to ensure the defensive philosophy has time to set in with the coaching staff.... I just hope they don't blow this one. They've got the bank account, do it right..... That's all I'm asking

Some possible candidates to replace Pellum with ties to Oregon or the staff include:

John Neal. Oregon’s respected secondary coach is a former defensive coordinator at UAB.

Justin Wilcox. A former Oregon player with experience as a Pac-12 defensive coordinator at USC and Washington.

Peter Sirmon. A former Oregon player who is currently the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at USC.

Jerry Azzinaro. Former Oregon defensive line coach who followed the recently fired Chip Kelly to Philadelphia to serve in the same capacity with the Eagles.

Steve Brown. Former Oregon player who is currently the assistant secondary coach for the Tennessee Titans and was the defensive coordinator at Kentucky under Rich Brooks.

Ed Orgeron. Current LSU defensive line coach, former Mississippi head coach and USC interim coach who is considered to be one of the nation’s top recruiters and has a strong relationship with Lubick from their time together at Ole Miss.

Orgeron would be a great hire I think but wouldn't surprise me at all if they hired someone with current/past ties to Oregon since that's been the route they've taken for years.

I don't think Orgeron would be a poor choice, however keep in mind that Jerry Azzinaro was a big key to the Duck defense's success back in '09. The guy's got a lot of energy and spirit. Very aggressive too. His voice could be heard above everything else on the practice field.

With Orgeron you get a great recruiter and ties to the Southeast (he's from southern louisiana if I remember correctly) and you need to recruit that area for the big bodies. He can also recruit SoCal. He's also not bad coaching the DL. Not sure about his skills coordinating a defense though.

Most of the Oregon staff has been there since the Brooks/Belotti era, don't you think it's time they shook it up a bit and brought in some new blood. Look at what they did when they added Chip to that staff. The offense went from very good to hyper drive in a season. I know a lot can be said for consistency, but sometime you have to rock the boat.

Clancy was rumored for USC as well if memory serves me correct.

Yes as of yesterday he was reportedly returning to USC for sure, but those reports have since been dismissed and Oregon appears to be very heavy on him for some reason or another. I know he's pretty good, so this may turn into a bidding war. Not sure about the Brady hoke interview; but the guy is a great recruiter. Oregon definitely needs a new scheme with a popular face attached to it... Pendergast has that scheme, not sure how well he recruits tho. Being at USC recruits itself where as Oregon, you're in the Pacific Northwest and typically have to go nationwide to get guys . Things appear to be heating up tho, and the ducks look desperate right now. If Pendergast turns them down I could see Oregon reaching out to some other big names. It's seems as tho they want to keep the list almost exclusively to guys with Oregon ties. Not sure I agree with that process but that's just me. This is one of those make or break hires. If they hit the nail on the head and get a big name guy who can produce great results you're in the running for a national title in the next couple years, but if they get complacent and just settle for anyone than they might end up screwing the program for the foreseeable future. This hire is monumental and I think people are starting to realize that

I've been saying for at least 10 years that if Oregon could ever learn to play defense as well as they play offense they will win a NC.

A lot of schools need go learn how-to play defense....There is nothing wrong with the Oregon football program; Their win/loss record during the past 6-7 years speakers for its' self.....Actually, they have established a lot of "turf' and respect in a conference that that has been, historically, dominated by the California schools...that took some real doings in the world of (big-time) college football today.
