WASHINGTON – Breaking forcefully with Bush anti-terror policies, President Barack Obama ordered major changes Thursday that he said would halt the torture of suspects, close down the Guantanamo detention center, ban secret CIA prisons overseas and fight terrorism "in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals."

"We intend to win this fight. We're going to win it on our terms," Obama declared, turning U.S. policy abruptly on just his second full day in office. He also put a fresh emphasis on diplomacy, naming veteran troubleshooters for Middle East hotspots.........

So how do you think we should handle the true terrorists in there? Personally I don't have a problem housing them here in the U.S. Not knowing the legistics of housing foreign prisoners and what not, (e.g. laws, costs, etc). I don't think we should just let em go, nor could we could trust any other country to house them.

Probably no one is happier than the boys on the front line. They hate making arrests and interviewing (this isnt why I joined the Marines!) and playing cop with a passion.

The US federal prison system has successfully handled all manner of crazies, psychos and killers going back for over a century.

BushCo knew that but they had no problem shitting on the Constitution and denying due process for arrested alleged criminals.

This post is pointless as it relates to Obama closing Gitmo. They won't be sending those at Gitmo to the U.S. prison system and they won't go on trial in the U.S. either. This is a feel good move by Obama and nothing more. Moreover, now they will put them other places and we won't even know where.

You are right now instead of capturing them. They should just shoot them in the head and be done with it.

Nevermind that its by Obama. The fact of the matter is, they're closing this prison within a year. What I'm asking is what should be done with em since they're shutting it down. Personally, I highly doubt our government is just gonna free these guys back into society.

They should get a real jury trial with the ability to call witnesses, use evidence, etc. They should be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
What they are going to do is lock them up in other places around the world and not tell us where.

do you think that if you were arrested as a suspected terrorist in one of the countries that these guys are from that you would get a fair trial?

What does that have to do with it? Nothing. I care about freedom and rights that every human should have. Just because some countries suck ass doesn't mean ours should too!

I used to feel the same way!
But, when our government starts to handle suspected "terrorist" in this manner...what happens when your average everyday american gets labeled as a "domestic terrorist" as it applies under the patriot act for some b.s. offense? It is a slippery slope!

Except if they do that, the terrorists get discovery, including access to classified info on how we track and capture terrorists. That's how we lost track of Bin Ladin when the Blind Sheik was on trial.

One day one campaign promise fulfilled.

Did Dubya fulfill even one in eight years?

The people in places like Gitmo are political prisoners.

These are people who are locked up with no rights and no access to the proper due process of law.

If you're not incarcerated by the state as a criminal, or a POW, then by logical definition, you are a political prisoner.

Rocket science it aint.

Anyone who is held illegally by the state also has the right to sue that government in the future.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a test case or a class action.

Going to be hilarious watching SCOTUS trying to give that one a bodyswerve.
:nohead:

The Gitmo farce will probably end up in the The International Court of Justice or The Hague.

Idiot. Its obvious you do not comprehend what this country stands for so do yourself a favor and do a little reading. Start out with the constitution. Freedom isnt supposed to be bound by borders. With this logic, why not torture them as well, they do it, why dont we? What kind of logic is this? We hold ourselves to a higher standard for a reason. Its this is what is supposed to separate us from the rest of the world. Although the last 8 years have been a disaster, its safe to say this country is still intact, although Obama will do his share to destroy what is left.

Signing the document is easy, now lets see him actually close the base.

Where are those guys going? If that question can't be answered, then the answer is they ain't going anywhere.

Of course, it's more about form over substance to the Kool Aid crowd anyways.
