Opening packs of baseball cards, the avid collector unwrapped a rare gem and shared the news on Twitter.

''Ripping open packs in ny, I found it!!!!!!! Ohtani (hash)'d 1/69,'' the 37-year-old Neshek tweeted , along with a photo of his prize - an autographed Shohei Ohtani rookie card from the 2018 Topps Heritage set.

Since the two-way phenom signed with the Los Angeles Angels in December, his cards and other autographed items have been highly coveted throughout the sports collectible industry.

This particular card was signed by the Japanese star in red ink, making it the rarer of two parallel groups of Ohtani autographs found within the set. Only 69 of this variation were produced, each one numbered individually. What makes Neshek's lucky haul extra special is it's the first one in the group that the pitcher/slugger signed, numbered ''01/69''.

Neshek often solicits autographs from teammates and opponents to add to his robust memorabilia collection. When he discovered the Ohtani card, though, he got a little flustered and accidentally placed it upside down in a protective case.

''Noticed how excited I was and put this in upside down...brutal,'' he tweeted.

Ohtani autographed cards have been selling for a premium on secondary markets such as eBay, which is exactly where Neshek's discovery appeared to be headed.

''Im going to give this to my dad to put up on eBay later this week, buy some more cases!'' Neshek tweeted .

With listings ranging from $2,000 to $5,500 for the card, Neshek and his father may be able to purchase a whole bunch of boxes with their potential windfall.

A two-time All-Star who signed a $16.25 million, two-year contract with the Phillies last offseason, Neshek is on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. He was sent for an MRI in Philadelphia on Tuesday, the team said.

Philadelphia's scheduled game against the New York Mets on Monday night was postponed due to the wintry weather and will be made up in July.

Diamondbacks sweep Dodgers, Corbin strikes out 12
April 4, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit his second homer in two games at Angel Stadium in the fifth inning, and Zack Cozart had walk-off homer in the 13th inning of the Los Angeles Angels' 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

One day after Ohtani hit an electrifying three-run homer in his first home plate appearance, the Japanese two-way rookie connected for a tying two-run homer off AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber in his second game at the Big A.

Neither team scored again after Ohtani's blast until Cozart, the Angels' new infielder, connected for his first career walk-off homer against Zach McAllister (0-1).

Ohtani also singled leading off the 10th to go 2 for 5, giving him six hits this season and five in his only two home games. The Angels' rookie sensation will make his first home pitching start Sunday against Oakland, one week after beating the Athletics on the road in his big-league pitching debut.

The Angels hadn't had a walk-off homer in extra innings since Aug. 9, 2014, when Albert Pujols did it.

Noe Ramirez (1-1), the Angels' eighth reliever, came on with two outs in the 13th and struck out Erik Gonzalez with two Indians on base.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, DODGERS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Patrick Corbin shut out Los Angeles on one hit over 7 1/3 innings, striking out a career-high 12 for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks swept the three-game series and won their ninth straight regular-season game against the Dodgers, going back to a pair of three-game series sweeps last season.

Corbin (2-0) retired 14 batters in a row to start the game, eight on strikeouts. The Dodgers struggled to make solid contact, and it took Matt Kemp's bloop double with two outs in the fifth to break up Corbin's no-hit bid. Kemp had the Dodgers' only hit of the game.

Corbin was taken out after walking Kemp with one out in the eighth inning.

Brad Boxberger earned his second save with a scoreless ninth. The Dodgers had only four base runners, two in the ninth on Boxberger walks. The Diamondbacks scored a run in each of the first three innings.

YANKEES 7, RAYS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton turned boos to cheers with his first Yankee Stadium home run in pinstripes, an emphatic go-ahead drive in the first inning to helo New York complete a two-game sweep.

Stanton turned on a high slider from Blake Snell (0-1), driving the ball 458 feet to left field at 117.9 mph for a two-run homer with the hardest-hit ball in the major leagues so for this young season.

Acquired from Miami in December, the major league home run champion was booed a day earlier when he struck out a career-worst five times in the Yankees' home opener.

Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez also hit two-run homers as the Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname. Judge connected off reliever Matt Andriese, the pitcher who gave up a home run to Judge in the slugger's first big league at-bat in August 2016. Sanchez's drive ended an 0-for-17 slide.

Luis Severino (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings, the longest outing by a New York starter this year. The Yankees improved to 4-2 under new manager Aaron Boone and won their 11th straight home series against the Rays. Tampa Bay has lost five straight games since beating Boston in its opener and is off to its worst start since 2011.

METS 4, PHILLIES 2.

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes homered, Amed Rosario hit a two-run triple and New York's bullpen faced the minimum batters over five scoreless innings.

New York swept the weather-shortened two-game series.

With runners at the corners and two outs in the sixth, Rosario cleared the bases with a liner over the head of shallow-playing right fielder Nick Williams to chase reliever Drew Hutchison (1-1) and snap a 2-2 tie. The 22-year-old Rosario has driven in five runs in as many games.

Mets relievers continued their strong start in a game that started 97 minutes late due to rain. Converted starter Robert Gsellman (1-0) threw two perfect innings. Hansel Robles struck out the side in his first appearance this season. A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless eighth and closer Jeurys Familia earned his third save in three chances. Mets relievers have allowed three runs in 20 1/3 innings (1.33 ERA), and the pitching staff as a whole has 61 strikeouts through the season's first five games.

ASTROS 3, ORIOLES 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Josh Reddick had three hits, and Alex Bregman's tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning lifted Houston past Baltimore for a three-game sweep.

Miguel Castro (0-1) took over for Dylan Bundy to start the seventh and walked Derek Fisher with one out. Fisher stole second base with two outs and the Astros went on top when he scored on Bregman's single to left field. Reddick, who started the season 1 for 11, singled three times after hitting a two-run homer and a grand slam in his last two at-bats Tuesday night.

Houston starter Dallas Keuchel allowed five hits and two runs - one earned - with four walks in five innings. Brad Peacock (1-0) allowed two hits in three scoreless innings.

TWINS 7, PIRATES 3.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brian Dozier homered for the third straight game, Miguel Sano drove in a pair of runs in frigid conditions and Minnesota handed Pittsburgh its first loss of the season.

Dozier hit a drive off the top of the left-field wall in the third inning for his fourth home run in four days. Sano finished 3 for 5 and started Minnesota's four-run rally in the sixth with an RBI single. He added another run-scoring single in the seventh. Eduardo Escobar also drove in two runs for the Twins.

Taylor Rogers (1-0) got two outs in the fifth to pick up the win.

Josh Bell hit a 432-foot home run through the snow flurries in the first inning for Pittsburgh. Corey Dickerson added two hits for the Pirates, but Pittsburgh's attempt to start 5-0 for the first time since 1983 ended when the Twins jumped on Ivan Nova (0-1) and the bullpen in the sixth.

WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Matt Davidson hit his fourth home run of the season, Jose Abreu added a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning and Chicago snapped Toronto's four-game winning streak.

Davidson homered leading off the second inning, driving a 3-1 pitch from Aaron Sanchez over the left-field fence. With the score tied at 3, Abreu connected on a 3-0 pitch from reliever Ryan Tepera (1-1), sending a solo shot into the second deck in left-center field for his second home run of the year.

Right-hander Nate Jones (1-0) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Closer Joakim Soria earned his second save of the season with a flawless ninth inning.

GIANTS 10, MARINERS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pablo Sandoval splashed a three-run homer into McCovey Cove while making a rare start, Johnny Cueto earned his first win of the season and San Francisco jumped all over Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.

Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford and Gorkys Hernandez also homered as the Giants got their bats going at last to back Cueto (1-0).

San Francisco rebounded quickly after losing its home opener a day earlier. Sandoval drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Giants ahead against Hernandez (1-1) in the first, when they also scored runs on a wild pitch and Crawford's sacrifice fly.

Gorkys Hernandez connected leading off the second. Belt started the fifth with a drive to left. Sandoval's drive into the water three batters later chased Hernandez, and Crawford followed with his first homer. It was the first time the Giants hit three homers in one inning since June 2, 2016, at Atlanta - also in the fifth. They last did it at home on May 7, 2007, in the fifth inning as well, against the Mets.

BRAVES 7, NATIONALS 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Foltynewicz outpitched Max Scherzer, Preston Tucker hit a three-run homer and Atlanta beat Washington.

Foltynewicz (1-0) allowed four hits, one run and two walks and had eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. He snapped an eight-start skid during which he went 0-7 with a 7.34 ERA.

Scherzer (1-1) gave up six hits, two walks and five runs - two earned - in five innings. The three-time Cy Young Award winner struck out seven.

The Braves, with three straight seasons of at least 90 losses, improved to 4-2 and are two games over .500 for the first time since April 22, 2015.

CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Carlos Martinez pitched into the ninth inning and struck out 10, Yadier Molina homered and St. Louis beat error-prone Milwaukee.

Leadoff batter Dexter Fowler scored twice in the first three innings for the Cardinals.

A 4-0 lead after four innings was more than enough cushion for the hard-throwing Martinez (1-1). The two-time All-Star rebounded from a rough opening-day start last week against the New York Mets by cruising through the Brewers' dangerous lineup at hitter-friendly Miller Park.

Martinez allowed four hits and two walks. He retired 16 straight before Domingo Santana laced a one-out single in the seventh. The right-hander's fastball still registered 93 mph in the ninth.

Molina hit a solo shot to left field in the fourth off Jhoulys Chacin (0-1).

ROCKIES 5, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jon Gray pitched seven scoreless innings, Trevor Story and Ian Desmond each drove in two runs and Colorado beat San Diego.

Gray (1-1) shut down the Padres a night after they won 8-4 behind rookie Christian Villanueva's three home runs and five RBIs. Gray retired Villanueva in three straight at-bats, including a strikeout. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none before three relievers finished a six-hitter.

Cory Spangenberg had two of the four hits off Gray. Wade Davis closed for his third save.

The Rockies hit Clayton Richard (0-1) hard in scoring all their runs in the first two innings.

ATHLETICS 6, RANGERS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Sean Manaea pitched three-hit ball over eight innings and Oakland defeated Texas.

Jed Lowrie had a two-run single in a four-run fourth. Matt Chapman scored two runs and Bruce Maxwell added an RBI double for the A's, who had lost four of five since winning on opening day.

Every Oakland starter had at least one hit or scored a run.

Manaea (1-1) struck out four and walked one while beating the Rangers for the third consecutive time.

Doug Fister (1-1) allowed five runs - two earned - and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Padres place Myers on DL, recall Maton
April 4, 2018

SAN DIEGO (AP) The San Diego Padres have placed outfielder Wil Myers on the 10-day disabled list with nerve irritation in his right arm.

To take his roster spot, the Padres recalled right-handed reliever Phil Maton from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Myers is hitting .250 with one homer and one RBI in three games. He moved back to the outfield this season to make room for Eric Hosmer at first base.

Myers also missed time this season with a back injury.

Cards activate Wainwright for home opener
April 4, 2018

MILWAUKEE (AP) St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright is coming back from the disabled list in time to start the home opener.

The Cardinals plan to activate Wainwright when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit Busch Stadium on Thursday, ending the veteran right-hander's season-opening stint on the 10-day DL for a strained left hamstring. He has been running and shagging fly balls with the team in Milwaukee, where the Cardinals were wrapping up a three-game series on Wednesday.

Manager Mike Matheny said the team decided that Wainwright was ready after giving him one last checkup Wednesday morning.

''I think they invented tests for me to try and pass to prove to them that I was ready,'' Wainwright said.

He'll take the start that was initially scheduled to go to Michael Wacha. The rest of the rotation will be pushed back a day to make room for Wainwright, whose 1,583 career strikeouts is second in Cardinals history only behind Hall of Famer Bob Gibson (3,117).

''I told them I would take whatever test they needed me to take. I didn't go into the manager's office and tell him `I want tomorrow,''' Wainwright said. ''I wanted to be respectful of Wacha and his position of potentially pitching tomorrow ... when he's also a very deserving candidate.''

The Cardinals optioned Jack Flaherty to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Wainwright. Flaherty allowed one run on six hits in five innings against Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) One of the basic truths of life: Baseball players get hurt a lot. Season started with 113 players on the disabled list, little less than four players per team.

12) There were 925 sacrifice bunts in the major leagues LY, fewest of any season since 1900.

11) When Ichiro Suzuki gets inducted into the Hall of Fame someday, it’ll a proud day for retired P Ryan Vogelsong. Ichiro was 0-15 in his career against Vogelsong.

10) New England now has four of the first 63 picks in the NFL Draft in three weeks. This is the first time since 1998 the Patriots have two 1st-round picks and two 2nd-round picks in a draft.

9) 80-year old Jim Harrick, who won a national title at UCLA in 1995, will be on Mark Gottfried’s staff at Cal-Northridge next winter. Gottfried was an assistant on that UCLA staff in ’95, with Lorenzo Romar and Steve Lavin.

8) Most NCAA tournament wins since 2000:
Kansas 49, North Carolina 48, Duke 46, Mich State/Kentucky 42

7) Dodgers pitchers allowed 8 bases-loaded walks all of last season; they issued three in the 7th inning alone Tuesday night in Arizona.

6) They had the par-3 tournament at Augusta National Wednesday; guys can have whoever they want caddy for them, and Jack Nicklaus had one of his grandsons caddy for him. They let the caddies hit a few shots, and the 15-year old grandson gets a hole-in-one, his first ever. Wow.

5) Pro golfer Tony Finau also got a hole-in-one Wednesday, but he dislocated his ankle while he was celebrating the ace. He put the ankle back in place and finished his round. Was odd to see; he just reached down and put the ankle back in place.

4) Thursday, Baltimore Ravens’ GM/coach Ozzie Newsome and John Harbaugh will be questioned under oath as part of the Colin Kaepernick collusion grievance.

Wednesday, the Ravens gave QB Robert Griffin III a one-year, $1M contract for 2018.

Maybe I watch too many movies, but I’m thinking this isn’t a coincidence.

3) College basketball coaching carousel:
— St Peter’s coach John Donne stays in the MAAC, but moves to Marist.
— Rhode Island promoted assistant David Cox to head coach.
— East Carolina signed Florida Gulf Coast coach Joe Dooley as its new coach.
— South Dakota hired Grand Canyon assistant Todd Lee as its new coach.

2) Cardinals led off Tuesday’s game with back/back homers off of Chase Anderson; last time the Redbirds started a game that way was when Curt Flood and Gene Freese led off with home runs off a guy named Sandy Koufax, on August 17, 1958.

1— Colorado Rockies gave Charlie Blackmon a 6-year, $108M contract, so he is staying in the friendly confines of Coors Field and will never, ever get traded in our fantasy league.

LEADING OFF: Fenway opener; Strasburg vs deGrom; Dozier hot
April 5, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

---

FENWAY FESTIVITIES

David Price gets a new opportunity to win over Boston fans when the Red Sox play their home opener against Tampa Bay. The $217 million left-hander held the Rays scoreless for seven innings when he started the second game of the season. Rookie manager Alex Cora said his mother will be in the crowd to see his first game in Boston. Ceremonies for the 107th opener at Fenway Park will include an F-16 flyover by the 134th Fighter Squadron in Vermont's Air National Guard, known as ''The Green Mountain Boys.'' Clear skies were expected but forecasts called for a strong wind and temperatures in the low 40s. ''Opening day is always fun,'' Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts said, ''although it's not fun when it's 40.''

PAIR OF ACES

Washington's home opener against the NL East rival Mets features an outstanding pitching matchup. Stephen Strasburg (1-0) starts for the Nationals vs. Jacob deGrom (1-0). New York is off to a 4-1 start, while Bryce Harper and the Nationals are 4-2. Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy, a former October star for the Mets, remains out following knee surgery. New York, however, could get All-Star outfielder Michael Conforto back from shoulder surgery for this one.

APRIL POWER

Brian Dozier, a career .225 hitter in April, has homered four times in four days for Minnesota. The slugging second baseman will try to extend his streak when the Twins open their ninth season at Target Field with a visit from James Paxton and the Seattle Mariners. Kyle Gibson pitches for Minnesota after throwing six shutout innings in his 2018 debut last week against Baltimore.

WITH HONORS

Veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright is scheduled to come off the disabled list to start St. Louis' home opener against Robbie Ray, Paul Goldschmidt and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Wainwright began the season on the 10-day DL with a strained left hamstring. ''I think they invented tests for me to try and pass to prove to them that I was ready,'' he said. Wainwright has 1,583 career strikeouts, second in Cardinals history behind Hall of Famer Bob Gibson (3,117).

Steady relief: Rays use bullpen in place of No 4 starter
April 5, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) The Tampa Bay Rays have an ambidextrous No. 4 starting pitcher: Mr. TBD.

His repertoire changes from outing to outing, along with his age and name. With an 0-1 record this season, he takes the mound Thursday at Boston and goes again Sunday.

Rejecting baseball tradition, the Rays plan to regularly use relievers on short notice to combine for a turn in their starting rotation.

''I think we would all agree that it's challenging for young pitchers to come and expect the seven innings, 105, 110 pitches, out of every start for them,'' manager Kevin Cash said. ''So if we shorten the workload and if we've got an abundance of those guys that are capable of doing that, in theory we believe, I believe, that we can get more out of those guys.''

Chris Archer heads a staff that includes Blake Snell and Jake Faria. Nathan Eovaldi was to be the fourth starter before reinjuring his pitching elbow, and the Rays developed the bullpen plan knowing they didn't need a fifth starter very often early in the season because they were scheduled for seven off days in the first six weeks.

Tampa Bay has struggled, losing five straight since an opening-day win. With the Rays down to three starters, the abnormal arrangement attracted even more scrutiny.

''The game is changing, evolving. You've got to be open to it,'' Seattle manager Scott Servais said. ''Other clubs are looking at six-man rotations.''

Cash waits until the end of the previous day's game to announce which reliever will open, wanting to gauge usage first. After he makes his decision, he calls or texts the next day's opposing manager as a courtesy.

Andrew Kittredge started last Saturday against Boston, lasting 57 pitches and 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, and took the loss in a 3-2 defeat.

Austin Pruitt was to have started Tuesday's game at the New York Yankees but snow led to a postponement that caused Cash to recalculate. Yonny Chirinos will start Thursday at the Red Sox, and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough, Kittredge or Pruitt could get Sunday's start at Fenway Park.

''It kind of remains to be seen how well it's going to go,'' said Kittredge, a 28-year-old right-hander who made his big league debut last July. ''If it works out, other teams might take notice and say, you know, hey, we've got two or three relievers that we think might be able to piece a game together better than fifth starters that might work. Or maybe it doesn't work and maybe it doesn't change anything and maybe we switch it after six weeks or so and go back to more of a traditional five-man rotation.''

Cash rejects the notion these pitchers are somehow apprentice starters.

''I've never said you're going to be a beginning pitcher. They're starting the game as far as I'm concerned,'' he said.

Pruitt won last week's opener against the Red Sox, following Archer with two innings of scoreless relief. He followed Archer again Tuesday and gave up six runs - five earned - over 2 1/3 innings in an 11-4 loss.

''There absolutely is a difference between starting and relieving,'' Pruitt said. ''It all has to do with mindset. Going from the starting role, you're going to face those guys multiple times. But if you're coming in out of the bullpen, you're not guaranteed to see them twice. So, out of the bullpen, you kind of go after them, attack them with your best stuff. There's no point of trying to set them up for later in the game.''

Kittredge views the situation differently.

''Normally, I get the phone call five minutes before I'm in the game,'' he said. ''The fact that I got a 12-to-24-hour notice isn't really affecting how I'm going to go about my business.''

Chirinos, 24, made his big league debut against Boston on Sunday, throwing 56 pitches over four innings of relief. The 26-year-old Yarbrough made his debut a day earlier. He followed Kittredge and threw 73 pitches over four innings, allowing one run.

''I've been a starter throughout the minors, but they told me during spring training, hey, we're looking at you this role,'' Yarbrough said. ''They kind of simulate that in spring training, where you don't have as much time to get loose.''

In an era when an increasing number of managers and pitching coaches are reluctant to let young starters face the batting order for a third time in a game, the Rays' plan will be analyzed.

''There's a ton of interest when somebody does something new,'' said A.J. Hinch, manager of the World Series champion Houston Astros. ''Is the four-man outfield going to be a trend? Is the bullpen usage going to be a trend? Is having a powerful leadoff hitter going to be a trend? Your personnel has to match the philosophy in which you deploy.''

Teams might copy the Rays if they have similar relievers.

''They've got a lot of optionable pieces in their bullpen, whereas a lot of clubs don't,'' Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. ''I'm going to watch it. Whether it's the five-man infield or four-man outfield, in our game sometimes we automatically always go: `Well, that can't be right.' Why? `Because it's never been done that way.' Well, isn't that boring. We do things in life all the time - how do you find out anything? You've got to try it.''

Michael Conforto comes off disabled list to star for Mets
April 5, 2018

ST. LOUIS (AP) Robbie Ray worked around five walks over six innings and the bullpen closed out a two-hitter, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks spoil the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener 3-1 on Thursday night.

Arizona improved to 6-1 for the second straight season and tied a franchise record for its best seven-game start. The team was also 6-1 in 2000. St. Louis dropped its first home opener since 2015.

Ray (2-0) gave up a run and two hits while striking out nine. He was making his first appearance in St. Louis since being knocked out of a game by a line drive off his head on July 28, 2017.

David Peralta capped off a two-run second inning with an RBI single. He pushed the lead to 3-0 with a double in the fourth.

Brad Boxberger picked up his third save in three chances. Four Arizona relievers were perfect except for an error by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in the eighth.

Adam Wainwright (0-1) came off the 10-day disabled list to make the start for St. Louis. He gave up four hits and three runs over 3 2/3 innings.

METS 8, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael Conforto came off the disabled list to hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Stephen Strasburg, Yoenis Cespedes also went deep against the ace, and Jay Bruce tacked on an insurance gland slam, leading New York to the victory in Washington's chilly home opener.

Jacob deGrom (2-0) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam to finish is six-inning outing with a flourish. After walking Bryce Harper to fill the bags, deGrom got Ryan Zimmerman to fly out to shallow right and Howie Kendrick to line out to shortstop, before Trea Turner looked at a 94 mph fastball for strike three. Turner argued and was ejected for the first time in the majors.

Zimmerman, who only got two at-bats in spring training, went 0 for 4 on Thursday and is 3 for 22 (.136) with six strikeouts this season.

The Mets improved to an NL East-leading 5-1, while the two-time reigning division champion Nationals have lost three in a row after a 4-0 start under rookie manager Dave Martinez.

Conforto hadn't appeared in the regular season since grabbing his left shoulder in pain last August; he had surgery the following month.

Strasburg (1-1) gave up four runs in six eventful innings. He balked in a run in the second, then allowed Cespedes' solo shot that tied it at 2 in the fourth. Bruce's sixth career grand slam, and first homer of 2018, came off Brandon Kintzler in the seventh.

RED SOX 3, RAYS 2, 12 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Hanley Ramirez blooped a bases-loaded fly ball over the drawn-in outfield in right to break a 12th-inning tie after Boston overcame a two-run deficit in the ninth in the home opener.

It was the sixth straight victory for Boston and new manager Alex Cora, and the sixth loss in a row for Tampa Bay. Bobby Poyner (1-0) pitched two innings, striking out three for his first major league win. Andrew Kittredge (0-2) took the loss, throwing a pair of scoreless innings before running into trouble.

After David Price pitched seven shutout innings for the second straight outing, Carson Smith gave up Matt Duffy's two-run homer in the eighth.

The Red Sox tied it off Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome. After Ramirez singled in one run to make it 2-1, J.D. Martinez grounded into a double play and then Xander Bogaerts doubled over the outstretched glove of left fielder Mallex Smith against the Green Monster to tie it.

TIGERS 9, WHITE SOX 7, 10 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer after replacing the injured Miguel Cabrera, and Detroit rallied to Chicago in the White Sox's cold home opener.

Goodrum's shot with two outs in the ninth got the comeback going. The White Sox were leading 7-4 when he drove a 3-2 fastball from Joakim Soria out to right-center to cut the lead to one. Nicholas Castellanos singled and Victor Martinez tied it with an RBI double, drawing boos from a sparse crowd.

Mikie Mahtook singled leading off the 10th against Gregory Infante (0-1) and Jose Iglesias walked. One out later, Mahtook scored from third on a roller toward second by Leonys Martin that was hit too slowly to turn a double play, resulting in a forceout. Jeimer Candelario followed with an RBI single to make it 9-7.

Shane Greene escaped a jam in the bottom half to earn his first save. He retired the first two batters before walking Omar Narvaez and hitting Nicky Delmonico, but struck out Yoan Moncada to end the game.

Joe Jimenez (1-0) got the win with a scoreless inning in relief.

TWINS 4, MARINERS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mitch Garver hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh for Minnesota, one inning after Miguel Sano tied it with a two-run shot in the Twins' chilly home opener.

Eddie Rosario went deep in the eighth to pad the lead, and Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his first save with the Twins. That capped a stretch of 4 2/3 scoreless innings by the bullpen in relief of Kyle Gibson. Zach Duke (1-0) was the winner, and Addison Reed struck out two in a perfect eighth.

James Paxton started strong for the Mariners with five scoreless innings after a first-pitch temperature of 38 degrees and a startling moment during the pregame ceremony. The bald eagle that was supposed to fly to the mound before the national anthem instead circled Paxton, a Canadian, where he was standing alone in left field on a break from his warmup throws. The bird would up landing its large talons on the lefty's left shoulder, before being lured away by the handler.

Garver's drive, his first major league homer, reached the second deck against Dan Altavilla (0-1).

ORIOLES 5, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Adam Jones hit a go-ahead home run, Andrew Cashner pitched six strong innings and beat New York to snap a five-game losing streak.

Jones' third homer of the season was a two-run drive off Masahiro Tanaka (1-1) in a five-run seventh inning. It came shortly after Aaron Judge gave New York a 1-0 lead in the sixth with his second home run of the year.

Cashner (1-1), who was hit hard in his first start of the season, held the Yankees to just one hit before serving up Judge's home run. The righty allowed two hits and struck out five as Baltimore bounced back from a three-game sweep at Houston.

Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his first save of the season in two chances.

CUBS 8, BREWERS 0.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jon Lester pitched six sharp innings and hit a tricky grounder that was tough to corral and Chicago beat Milwaukee.

Brewers star closer Corey Knebel exited with a hamstring injury while getting some work in the ninth inning. Manager Craig Counsell said Knebel will get an MRI and likely go on the disabled list.

Jason Heyward homered for the Cubs, who had been shut out in the previous two games.

Milwaukee was blanked for the second straight day after has lost three of four since a 3-0 start.

Lester (1-0) allowed three hits, struck out six and walked one for Chicago, which played for the first time since Monday. The Cubs were rained out in Cincinnati on Tuesday and were off on Wednesday.

Cubs relievers Carl Edwards Jr., Steve Cishek and Eddie Butler each pitched an inning. Brent Suter (1-1) pitched five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks.

ROCKIES 3, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan McMahon drew a bases-loaded walk off All-Star closer Brad Hand to break a scoreless tie in the ninth inning, and DJ LeMahieu added a two-run single for Colorado.

Hand (0-2) walked Trevor Story and Chris Iannetta to open the ninth and the Rockies loaded the bases when second baseman Carlos Asuaje committed an error when he couldn't hold onto the throw from third baseman Christian Villanueva after Gerardo Parra's bunt.

Hand struck out pinch-hitter Carlos Gonzalez, but then walked McMahon on four pitches to bring in Story. Charlie Blackmon struck out before LeMahieu singled to with two outs.

Adam Ottavino (1-0) pitched two innings for the win and Wade Davis worked the ninth for his fourth save. Davis allowed Manuel Margot's leadoff homer, his first, and then retired the side.

PHILLIES 5, MARLINS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Maikel Franco homered, tripled, singled and drove in four runs for Philadelphia, and Nick Pivetta struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings.

Pivetta (1-0) allowed four hits and no walks. Adam Morgan retired the four batters he faced and Luis Garcia and Hector Neris combined on the four-hitter.

The Phillies won a home opener for the first time since 2011.

Marlins starter Caleb Smith (0-1) allowed three runs and two hits in three innings. Three of the six batters he walked scored.

PIRATES 5, REDS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Gregory Polanco hit a two-run home run during a four-run fifth inning to lift Pittsburgh past Cincinnati.

Polanco broke a 1-1 tie when he drove a ball into the shrubbery in center field off Homer Bailey (0-2). Polanco also had a tying sacrifice fly in the third inning, giving him three RBIs as the Pirates won for the fifth time in six games.

Steven Brault (2-0) pitched one-run ball over five innings in his first start this season. The left-hander allowed three hits, struck out four and walked four. He took over the rotation spot left by Joe Musgrove, who has a right shoulder strain.

RANGERS 6, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Adrian Beltre singled and doubled to become the career hits leader among Latin-born players with 3,055 in Texas' victory over Oakland.

Martin Perez (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning of his first start of the season, and Shin-Soo Choo homered for the second consecutive day. Daniel Mengden (0-2) took the loss.

The crowd of 10,132 was the largest of the series that attracted 34,613 total for the four games.
