Yankees' home opener against Rays called off because of snow
April 2, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Aaron Boone woke up before heading to the ballpark for his first home opener as New York Yankees manager and peeked outside the window.

''Huh,'' he recalled saying to himself. ''It really is 100 percent chance of snow at 7 a.m.''

Two hours later, the Yankees postponed Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays and rescheduled it for 4:05 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 5 starter Jordan Montgomery remains the scheduled pitcher for the Yankees. The Rays will shift to ace Chris Archer in place of Austin Pruitt, who won Thursday's opener in relief.

New York lost its final two games of an opening series at Toronto for a four-game split. Tampa Bay lost the final three games of its opening series at home against Boston.

New York's opener against Houston at Yankee Stadium two years ago was postponed because of a forecast of bad weather and rescheduled for the following day.

Monday's fast-moving spring snowstorm swept through parts of the Northeast. The decision to start later in the day Tuesday was made because rain is forecast for the morning. The snowstorm was the fifth to move through the area after four nor'easters in March.

Gardenhire gets 1st win with Tigers
April 2, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Charlie Morton pitched six scoreless innings, Marwin Gonzalez homered and the Houston Astros unveiled their World Series banner before defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 on Monday night in their home opener.

Morton (1-0) allowed three hits and struck out six. The right-hander picked up where he left off after getting the final 12 outs in Game 7 against the Dodgers to help secure Houston's first championship.

Brad Peacock pitched a perfect seventh and Will Harris allowed one hit in the eighth before Collin McHugh took over. The starter-turned-reliever allowed a homer to Trey Mancini and a double to Colby Rasmus before retiring the last three batters.

Baltimore has dropped three straight after winning its opener. Orioles starter Chris Tillman (0-1) was tagged for seven hits and four runs in four-plus innings.

RED SOX 7, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Brian Johnson gave the Red Sox their fifth solid start in five games, allowing one run in six innings.

All five Boston starters have allowed less than two runs, a franchise first to begin a season.

Hanley Ramirez and Mookie Betts each hit his first home run of the season for the Red Sox. Johnson (1-0) gave up rookie Brian Anderson's first career homer but stranded six runners.

Trevor Richards (0-1), the Marlins' minor league pitcher of the year in 2017, retired the first seven batters in his major league debut but then allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

NATIONALS 8, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer, helping the Nationals to the first 4-0 start in their Washington history.

Harper's second-inning shot off Sean Newcomb (0-1) gave the Nationals a 5-0 lead. He also walked four times and scored three runs.

Washington's Tanner Roark (1-0) pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

Newcomb allowed six runs, five earned, and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Braves right-hander Anibal Sanchez, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Gwinnett before the game, pitched three scoreless innings in relief to strengthen his bid for a spot in the rotation.

TIGERS 6, TWINS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Francisco Liriano pitched into the seventh inning and Victor Martinez drove in three runs to hand Ron Gardenhire his first win with the Tigers.

Gardenhire won 1,068 games as Minnesota's manager from 2002-14. This is his first year at the helm in Detroit.

The temperature was in the mid-30s at Comerica Park for a matchup between the last two winless teams in the American League.

Liriano (1-0) allowed a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth, with Martinez delivering a two-run single off Jason Hammel (0-1).

BLUE JAYS 4, WHITE SOX 2

TORONTO (AP) - Russell Martin, Josh Donaldson and Aledmys Diaz connected, powering Toronto to its third straight victory.

All six runs in the game came on homers.

Welington Castillo went deep twice for the White Sox for his sixth career multihomer game and third straight against Toronto. Castillo hit five home runs against the Blue Jays in 2017, his highest total against any opponent.

Martin erased a 2-1 deficit with a two-run drive off Danny Farquhar (1-1) with two out in the seventh.

Seung Hwan Oh (1-0) got the win despite allowing Castillo's second homer, a tiebreaking shot in the top of the seventh. Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his second save.

PIRATES 5, TWINS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Colin Moran hit a first-inning grand slam in his debut at PNC Park, Jameson Taillon tied a career high with nine strikeouts and Pittsburgh held on for the win in its home opener.

Moran, part of a trade that sent Gerrit Cole to Houston in January, sent a full-count fastball from Lance Lynn into the seats above the Clemente Wall in right field to stake the Pirates to an early lead they nursed to just their third 4-0 start in 35 years.

Taillon (1-0) allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings. George Kontos worked a perfect ninth for his second career save.

Brian Dozier homered for the second straight day for the Twins. Lynn (0-1) lasted just four innings in his first game with Minnesota since signing a one-year deal last month.

CARDINALS 8, BREWERS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Pitcher Miles Mikolas hit a home run and got the win in his return from a three-year stint in Japan, and the Cardinals spoiled the Brewers' home opener.

St. Louis shortstop Paul DeJong connected for the second straight game, hitting his third homer this season. Milwaukee had opened the season with a three-game sweep at San Diego.

Mikolas (1-0) gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first big league start since Aug. 25, 2014, when he pitched eight innings for Texas in a 2-0 win over Seattle. He also got his first major league hit in the fifth - a two-run homer off Zach Davies (0-1) that broke a 2-2 tie.

Eric Thames, Lorenzo Cain and Manny Pina homered for Milwaukee.

REDS 1, CUBS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Rookie Tyler Mahle pitched one-hit ball for six innings, Raisel Iglesias struck out Anthony Rizzo with the bases loaded to end the eighth, and the Reds edged the Cubs for their first win of the season.

Eugenio Suarez tripled in the fourth and scored on Adam Duvall's groundout for the game's only run.

Cincinnati was swept at home by Washington, falling to 0-3 for the first time since 2003. It also trailed in all 27 innings - the Nationals scored in the first inning each time.

Mahle (1-0) earned the victory in only his fifth major league start, outpitching Tyler Chatwood (0-1) in his Cubs debut. Iglesias got four outs for the save.

Chicago has been blanked in back-to-back games for the first time since last May 26-27, when the Dodgers beat the Cubs 4-0 and 5-0.

Joe Maddon

Tuesday’s quiz

What team did Toronto catcher Russell Martin break into the major leagues with?

Monday’s quiz
Scott Brooks was coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder before Billy Donovan.

Sunday’s quiz
UConn was last college basketball team to win the national title as lower than a #2-seed; they were a 7-seed when they won the title in 2014.

******************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but………

13) I wrote this here last month but it bears repeating; former UCLA coach Jim Mora coached QB Josh Rosen for three years, and he said on NFL Network that if he was the Browns, he’d take Sam Darnold with the first pick, not Rosen.

Now Mora just got fired, so there is an interesting story or three there, but still. Can you ever, in the history of the world, remember a coach throwing his former player under the bus like this?

12) “He needs to be challenged intellectually so he doesn’t get bored.” Mora talking about Rosen.

I’ve heard this about Rosen before, that he quit playing youth tennis because he got bored with winning so much. You think Tom Brady gets bored with winning?? Nah, me neither.

11) Mora also said no GM has called him to talk about Rosen, which seems strange. NFL teams do a ridiculous amount of research on prospects— you don’t talk to his college coach?

10) Philip Rivers better not get hurt; Chargers signed Geno Smith as his backup- he’ll join Cardale Jones on the Chargers’ bench. Like I said, Rivers better not get hurt.

9) Since Bartolo Colon made his big league debut, 17 of the 30 major league teams have gotten new home ballparks.

8) Houston’s Marwin Gonzalez and Milwaukee’s Hernan Perez were only two players LY with 10+ starts at five different positions.

7) Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban was in a scene in Showtime’s Billions Sunday night; not a very tough role— he played himself, but have to give him credit— he nailed it.

6) Solid discovery today in my local supermarket- they sell Dr Brown’s soda, which is usually only sold in delis. Got some black cherry and cream soda— that goes very well with the excellent sandwiches at the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas, but they’ll have to do for now with whatever I have to eat here at home.

5) Roof was open at Marlins Park Monday nite, will be open again tonight, weather permitting, making it six nights in a row the roof in Miami will be open. Last year, in 78 h0me games, Miami had the roof open only six times.

4) Reds 1, Cubs 0— Chicago is 2-3 to start the season; they’ve scored a total of one run in the three losses. Cubs have struck out 58 times in five games, an NL record for any team in their first five games.

3) Villanova 79, Michigan 62— Wolverines were 3-15 from floor in last 11:00 of first half, when this game was decided. DiVicenzo is Villanova’s 3rd-leading scorer but doesn’t start- he took this game over, scoring 18 in first half, 31 for the game.

This was first year the Super Bowl champ and NCAA basketball champ came from the same city.

2) This was the first national title game since the Magic-Bird final in 1979 with only one McDonald’s All-American playing in it. Just goes to show you that high school ratings can be very misleading.

1— The golf pool on this site starts this week with The Masters— if you’d like to get in, you pick three guys a week, can only use the same guy once a year. 18 tournament, then a 4-week playoff for the eight people who make it.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking:
Justin Verlander, Houston Astros (1-0, 0.00 ERA, $100)

Well, Verlander just picked up where he left off last season. The former MVP cruised through six shutout innings in the Astros Opening Day 4-1 win over the Rangers, allowing just four hits and striking out five.

Verlander’s numbers since joining the Astros are just staggering. He is now 10-1 (including postseason appearances) with a 1.52 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP, while racking up 86 K’s in 67.2 innings pitched. Whoa.

Slumping:
Matt Harvey, New York Mets (2017: 5-7, 6.70 ERA $-697)

Will the Dark Knight rise in 2018? While Harvey thinks he and the Mets are going to surprise people in 2018, we’re going to take a more wait and see approach with the oft injured right-hander.

Another injury riddled 2017 campaign saw Harvey pitch fewer than 100 innings for the second consecutive season and record career worsts in ERA (6.70), WHIP (1.69), home runs allowed/9-innings (2.0) and strikeout/walk rate (1.43). Woof. So yeah, a good 2018 would be a surprise.

Tuesday's Top Trends

Weather Watch

Some early season weather is in the forecast that could disrupt today's baseball action:

At Comerica Park in Detroit opening pitch is set for 1:10 PM ET, but the Tigers and Royals will be racing to get the game in before the rain comes. There will also be a moderate pitchers wind in the stadium.
In New York, both the Yankees and Mets hope to get their games in after yesterday's were postponed due to snow. For the Yankees game against the Rays (O/U: 8) with a 4:05 PM ET first pitch, there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation. That number drops to about 40 percent for the Mets first pitch vs. the Phillies scheduled to go at 7:10 ET.

Ump of the Day

Bruce Dreckman: Dreckman was one of the best Under umpires in baseball last season, with the total falling under the number in 20 of 33 games he officiated, including his last eight games overall. Desptite the good Under numbers, there was an average of 9.33 runs scored be game when he was behind home plate last season and had an average strike rate of 63.76 percent. Dreckman will be calling balls and strikes in San Diego tonight, where the Padres host the Rockies with a total of 8.5.

Gregorius powers Yankees past Rays
April 3, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani hit his first major league home run in his first Angel Stadium at-bat, helping the Los Angeles Angels beat the Cleveland Indians 13-2 on Tuesday night.

Ohtani capped a six-run first inning with a three-run drive to center off Josh Tomlin (0-1). The Japanese two-way player got the silent treatment from teammates when he returned to the dugout, but not from the crowd. After players broke character and jumped around Ohtani to celebrate, Mike Trout pointed to the field and instructed Ohtani to take a curtain call.

Trout, Justin Upton, Luis Valbuena and Rene Rivera also homered for the Angels, who broke a 12-game losing streak to the Indians. Garrett Richards (1-0) got the win.

Jose Ramirez hit a two-run home run in the first for the Indians.

YANKEES 11, RAYS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Didi Gregorius hit a pair of three-run homers and drove in a career-high eight RBIs, and the Yankees won Aaron Boone's chilly first home opener as manager.

Gregorius had four hits and walked, setting a major league record for RBIs by a player in a home opener. He also set a Yankees record for RBIs by a shortstop.

He doubled and scored in the second, and his first homer put the Yankees ahead 4-1 in the third against Chris Archer. After New York's bullpen wasted a three-run lead for the second straight game, Gregorius drove an 0-2 pitch from Austin Pruitt (1-1) into the second deck in the seventh. He blooped an opposite-field two-run single to left in the eighth.

New York improved to 3-2 under Boone, who took over when Joe Girardi was fired. Tommy Kahnle (1-0) got the win.

BRAVES 13, NATIONALS 6

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman and Preston Tucker each hit a three-run homer, and Atlanta handed Washington its first loss.

Freeman and Tucker each delivered a big blow as Atlanta scored four times in each of the first two innings. Tucker's drive in the first against A.J. Cole (0-1) reached the restaurant behind the right-field seats, and Freeman cleared the wall in right-center in the second.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in the first for Washington, and Cole added his first career homer in the second. Leading off the third, Bryce Harper continued his hot streak with his fourth homer in the last three games.

Shane Carle (1-1) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.

METS 2, PHILLIES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Mets right-hander Matt Harvey allowed one hit over five sharp innings in his encouraging season debut.

With most seats empty in the 40-degree mist and chill, a healthy-looking Harvey gave the Mets reason to believe he can rebound this year from two terrible seasons interrupted by injury.

Todd Frazier snapped a scoreless tie with a run-scoring double in the sixth. Travis d'Arnaud added a two-out RBI single that chased Ben Lively (0-1), who hit Yoenis Cespedes with a pitch to begin the rally.

Philadelphia put runners at the corners with one out in the ninth, but Jeurys Familia finished the three-hitter for his second save.

BLUE JAYS 14, WHITE SOX 5

TORONTO (AP) - Josh Donaldson and Aledmys Diaz each hit a two-run homer, helping Toronto to its fourth consecutive victory.

Donaldson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Diaz had three hits before leaving after six innings because of back spasms.

Donaldson and Diaz also went deep in Monday's night's 4-2 victory over Chicago.

Avisail Garcia, Tim Anderson and Yolmer Sanchez hit solo home runs for the White Sox. Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) got the loss.

Toronto's J.A. Happ (1-1) struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings, but was charged with four runs and seven hits.

MARINERS 6, GIANTS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mitch Haniger hit a two-run single, helping the Mariners spoil the Giants' home opener.

Seattle's Marco Gonzales (1-0) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Edwin Diaz got three outs for his third save.

Joe Panik hit a solo homer and Evan Longoria added a two-run shot for the Giants, the first with his new team.

Ty Blach (1-1), filling in for injured San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner, was done after 4 1/3 innings having allowed 10 hits and six runs.

The crowd of 40,901 marked the lowest for a Giants home opener in the 19-year ballpark's history.

ROYALS 1, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Jake Junis took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Kansas City earned its first victory of the season.

On a chilly, rainy day - with snow a possibility on Wednesday - the Tigers and Royals breezed through nine innings in 2 hours, 17 minutes. Jorge Soler, who still doesn't have a major league hit since July 2, drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Junis (1-0) allowed three hits in seven-plus innings. Kelvin Herrera struck out two in a perfect ninth for his first save.

Matthew Boyd (0-1) was sharp for the Tigers, allowing a run and four hits in six innings.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Rams traded 1st and 6th-round draft picks to New England Tuesday for WR Brandin Cooks and a 4th-round pick. Two things about this:

a) I no longer have to worry about the Rams trading for Odell Beckham
b) Rams still have eight draft picks, but only one of their original picks- four of those eight picks are in the 6th round. Their first pick right now will be the 87th selection.

12) This means all those geniuses who do a mock draft every 36 hours get to do more of them, since the #23 pick moves to the Patriots. Still 22 days until the draft.

11) Louisville QB Lamar Jackson is being advised by his mother instead of by an agent. No one knows what this means exactly, since the mom is a private person and hasn’t said much. Will be curious to see if an agent is hired once a team drafts him, and negotiations for a contract begin.

One thing, for sure; Lamar Jackson is going to play QB, and only QB.

10) This was the 4th time in last five years the college basketball national champ went 6-0 vs spread in its NCAA tournament games.

9) This is a little hard to believe, but they said on TV Monday night that Padres’ reliever Adam Cimber is first the major leaguer ever to wear number 90.

8) Arizona 8, Dodgers 7 (15)— This game ended at 3:26am Tuesday morning; had the game gone to the 16th inning, both teams would’ve used position players to pitch.

7) Two pitchers have already been removed from games this season with a no-hitter going: Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson Saturday in Baltimore, Pirates’ Trevor Williams Sunday in Detroit.

6) A’s drew only 7,416 fans for their home game with Texas Monday night, their smallest home crowd since 2003. Oy.

A’s drew 9,157 fans last night on Free Parking Tuesday, which doesn’t seem like a big promotion until you realize they charge $30 to park a car in Oakland.

5) There were 144 hitters last year who got enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title; 89 of them hit 20+ home runs, which means 61.8% of hitters who qualified for the batting title hit 20+ homers. In 2014, that number was 32%.

4) Number of times a pitcher went thru the opponent’s whole lineup three times in a game:
2017 1,196 (39.9 per team, out of 162 games)
2016 1,405
2015 1,670
2014 1,906

Unless the guy is an ace or really rolling that night, starting pitchers aren’t allowed to go thru the lineup three times anymore.

3) Rhode Island Rams were apparently going to hire Rick Pitino as their new basketball coach, until the school president put the kibosh on that. Now what?

2) San Diego 3B Christian Villanueva was 0-4 for the season before Tuesday; he hit three homers for the Padres last night in their win over Colorado.

1— Brewers 5, Cardinals 4— Christian Yelich tied game with a dramatic two-out HR in the 9th, then Ryan Braun won it with a walk-off tater.

This was the first game in MLB history where the first two batters of the game homered, and also the last two.

LEADING OFF: Daytime aces, Pirates thriving without 'Cutch
April 3, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

---

ACES EARLY

Might be a good day to call off from work: There are seven games starting around 1 p.m. local time or earlier, and those matchups are loaded with top-notch pitchers. Washington's Max Scherzer, the Yankees' Luis Severino, Kansas City's Danny Duffy, the Mets' Noah Syndergaard, Houston's Dallas Keuchel and Cleveland's Corey Kluber are all slated to pitch games scheduled between noon and 4 p.m. ET.

NO `CUTCH, NO COLE, NO PROBLEM

The Pirates are 4-0 for the third time in 35 years, and their young players are picking up confidence as they begin the season without traded stars Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole. Rotation linchpin Jameson Taillon overpowered Minnesota for more than five innings in Pittsburgh's 5-4 victory Monday in the home opener, and Colin Moran - acquired from Houston for Cole - hit a grand slam for his first homer as a Pirate. Ivan Nova tries to get the Pirates win No. 5 in a showdown with new Twins righty Jake Odorizzi.

KING IN SWING?

Felix Hernandez tries to follow an encouraging season opener when Seattle plays at San Francisco. The longtime ace of the Mariners only averaged 90.3 mph on his fastball opening day - down from his mid-90s heat a decade ago - but he commanded it well and baffled Cleveland with a biting curveball over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Hernandez will share the hill with Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto, who allowed one hit in seven innings during a 1-0 win over the Dodgers in his first start.

OUT LIKE A LAMB

Arizona will be without third baseman Jake Lamb for a bit after he sprained the left AC joint in his shoulder. Lamb was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday after getting hurt in Monday's 8-7, 15-inning win over the Dodgers. Lamb was injured making a diving catch in the ninth inning, but stuck around long enough to dive across home plate for the winning run - a move that left him in obvious pain. The Diamondbacks are set to wrap a three-game series vs. the Dodgers.
