Eaton leads Nationals past Reds, 13-7
March 31, 2018

CINCINNATI (AP) Adam Eaton had solo homer among his career-high five hits and Brian Goodwin hit his first career grand slam on Saturday, powering the Washington Nationals to a 13-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Nationals have won their first two games under new manager Dave Martinez, hired after Dusty Baker was fired last season following another quick exit in the playoffs. The last time they opened a season 3-0 was 2013, when they swept the Marlins.

Matt Adams and Trea Turner also homered for Washington.

Stephen Strasburg (1-0) gave up three runs - only one earned - in 6 1/3 innings while improving to 5-1 career against Cincinnati. Scott Schebler's homer in the fourth inning provided Cincinnati's first run of the season after 12 scoreless innings.

The Nationals piled up six runs in six innings off Luis Castillo (0-1), the Reds' top young starter last season.

BLUE JAYS 5, YANKEES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Yangervis Solarte hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning of Toronto's first win of the season, and Kevin Pillar added an insurance run by stealing second, third and home.

The Blue Jays bounced back from two straight losses. Tyler Austin homered twice for the Yankees.

Solarte began the eighth with a deep drive to center off Dellin Betances (0-1) for a 4-3 lead.

Pillar hit a one-out single and swiped his way to third. The speedy outfielder then broke for the plate with Gift Ngoepe at bat, and Betances threw wildly to the backstop. It was Toronto's first straight steal of home since Aaron Hill did it against New York on May 29, 2007.

Ryan Tepera (1-0) pitched one inning for the win and Roberto Osuna finished for his first save.

TWINS 6, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Minnesota Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson pitched six hitless innings before being replaced by Ryan Pressly, who kept the no-hitter intact until the eighth.

Gibson (1-0), Pressly and Gabriel Moya combined on a three-hitter to help Minnesota bounce back from an 11-inning, season-opening loss to Baltimore on Thursday.

Pressly worked a perfect seventh and got two outs in the eighth before Jonathan Schoop grounded a single up the middle.

Moya gave up a double to Danny Valencia and a homer to Tim Beckham in the ninth.

Miguel Sano, Jason Castro and Max Kepler homered against Baltimore right-hander Andrew Cashner (0-1).

BRAVES 15, PHILLIES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ender Inciarte drove in four runs with three hits, Ryan Flaherty had four hits and scored four times, and Atlanta roughed up Vince Velasquez.

Brandon McCarthy (1-0) allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings in his Braves debut.

Velasquez (0-1) faltered in a tough spot for Philadelphia after it used a combined 13 relievers in the first two games of the series. He was charged with seven runs, four earned, and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Six Phillies pitchers allowed 19 hits, and the defense committed four errors. Utility player Pedro Florimon pitched the eighth and gave up a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Lane Adams.

WHITE SOX 4, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Welington Castillo hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning, lifting the White Sox to the victory.

Danny Farquhar (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. Former Royals reliever Joakim Soria got Whit Merrifield to fly out with runners on first and second for his first save with the White Sox.

Chicago's rally began when Yoan Moncada hit a towering home run off Brandon Maurer (0-1) to begin the eighth. Avisail Garcia followed with a single, Jose Abreu grounded into a fielder's choice and Matt Davidson drew a walk before Castillo's two-run liner to right put the White Sox in front.

ASTROS 9, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Lance McCullers Jr. struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings and Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer, leading Houston to the victory.

Correa and AL MVP Jose Altuve each had four hits and scored twice for the World Series champions. Jake Marisnick hit a two-run drive, and Marwin Gonzalez also drove in two runs.

McCullers (1-0) was one short of his career high in strikeouts.

Elvis Andrus had two hits for Texas, including his first homer of the season. He scored each of the Rangers' three runs.

Matt Moore (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings in his Texas debut.

RED SOX 3, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Xander Bogaerts homered for Boston, and Rick Porcello carried a shutout into the sixth inning.

Bogaerts hit a solo drive in the second against Andrew Kittredge (0-1), a reliever making his first big league start in the debut of Tampa Bay's plan to use bullpen days in place of a customary fifth starter.

Porcello (1-0) was charged with one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his second save.

Carlos Gomez homered for Tampa Bay, and Matt Duffy had three hits.

METS 6, CARDINALS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes and Travis d'Arnaud homered, Todd Frazier drove in three runs and the Mets opened at 2-0 for the first time since 2013.

New York right-hander Jacob deGrom (1-0) struck out seven while pitching 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball.

D'Arnaud connected in the fourth and Cespedes made it 4-1 with another solo drive in the fifth.

Matt Carpenter homered for St. Louis in the eighth. Michael Wacha (0-1) allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Jeurys Familia got the last four outs for his first save.

ANGELS 8, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout had three hits and two RBIs, Zack Cozart also drove in two runs and the Angels finished with 12 hits.

Albert Pujols had two hits and two RBIs for Los Angeles, and No. 9 batter Rene Rivera had two hits and scored two runs.

Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker (1-0) gave up three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four while improving to 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA in his last seven starts against Oakland.

A's starter Daniel Mengden (0-1) was charged with six runs, five earned, and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He also threw two wild pitches.

INDIANS 6, MARINERS 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Yonder Alonso hit his third career grand slam in the first inning, Yan Gomes added a two-run shot and Cleveland held on for the road win.

Alonso and Gomes provided the big blows off James Paxton (0-1), who struggled with command and failed to make it out of the fifth inning.

Carlos Carrasco (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning to get the victory. Cody Allen got three outs for his first save.

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki robbed Jose Ramirez of a home run leading off the third inning, timing his leap perfectly to reach above the wall in left field. Suzuki also had his first two hits for the Mariners since July 21, 2012, before he was traded to the Yankees.

LEADING OFF: 6 teams off Easter Sunday, Ohtani debuts arm
March 31, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

NO FOOLIN'

If Sunday's schedule looks a little odd, well, it is. Six teams are idle - Milwaukee-San Diego, Colorado-Arizona and Philadelphia-Atlanta played their series finales on Saturday.

The Braves opted to have Easter Sunday off, rather than Friday. The Braves said it will be the franchise's first scheduled Sunday off-day in a season since May 21, 1933, when the Boston Braves were in Pittsburgh but didn't play because of Pennsylvania's religious-based ''blue laws'' that dated to 1794.

The Padres said they requested Easter Sunday off because it traditionally has been a tough ticket. Manager Andy Green said he planned to spend it with his family.

''I can't think of a time I had Easter off,'' he said.

SHO TIME

Shohei Ohtani makes his much-anticipated debut as a big league pitcher when the Los Angeles Angels visit Oakland. The two-way star from Japan went 1 for 5 at the plate as a designated hitter during his first game in the majors. The 23-year-old righty had a rough time on the mound in spring training, and wound up working on back fields.

WELCOME

Gerrit Cole starts out for Houston, joining a potent rotation that includes Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel. The World Series champions acquired him from Pittsburgh in the winter. The 27-year-old righty went 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA last season, and the Astros hope he can regain the form that made him an ace. He'll pitch at Texas.

CRUZ CONTROL

Nelson Cruz became the latest Seattle player to get injured - and it was bizarre. The slugger twisted his right ankle when he slipped on the dugout steps following his home run against Cleveland on Saturday at Safeco Field. X-rays were negative, but Cruz will have an MRI on Sunday. Cruz wore a protective boot postgame.

''When I heard that, I wanted to throw up,'' Mariners manager Scott Servais said. ''I really don't know any other way to put it. Our club has just battled through a bunch of nagging injuries here in spring training and early in the season here.''

NO LUCK

Billy McKinney joined Yankees outfielders Aaron Hicks, Jacoby Ellsbury and Clint Frazier on the disabled list after spraining his left shoulder Saturday. McKinney crashed into the scoreboard chasing a ball in Toronto, a day after making his major league debut. The injury reminded some of Dustin Fowler - during his big league debut last June, the Yankees right fielder slid into a side wall, wrecked his knee and missed the rest of the season. Fowler never got to bat, and was later traded to Oakland.

Braves acquire catcher Perez from Angels for IF Schimpf
March 31, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves have added catching depth by acquiring Carlos Perez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for infielder Ryan Schimpf.

The Braves needed help at catcher after they placed Tyler Flowers on the 10-day disabled list with an oblique injury on Friday and Kurt Suzuki suffered a bruised right hand Friday night. Chris Stewart started Saturday night's game against Philadelphia.

The 27-year-old Perez was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday after hitting .265 in 17 spring games. He played in 11 games with the Angels last season and had two hits in 20 at-bats.

Perez is a career .224 hitter in 184 major league games.

The Braves acquired the 29-year-old Schimpf from Tampa Bay on March 5 and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett on March 18.

************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Michigan 69, Loyola 57— Ramblers were up 7 at the half; other than Wagner, Wolverines were 4-23 in first half, but Michigan scored 47 points in 2nd half, after only 22 in first, and they move on to the national championship game Monday night.

Loyola shot 39.8% on the arc for the season; they were 1-10 in this game.

12) Villanova 95, Kansas 79— With 6:52 left in first half, Villanova led by 14 and already had seven guys who made at least one 3-pointer- this game was 22-4 at one point, and was reminiscent of Villanova’s dismantling of Oklahoma in the national semis two years ago.

11) I’ve thought a lot about this, asked lot of people about it and still cannot find a decent reason to bat the pitcher 8th. Mets/Phillies are doing it this year with new managers.

Tony LaRussa used to do it, Joe Maddon has done it, which gives the idea credibility, but they did not do it in playoff games, which makes me a skeptic.

10) Scheduling quirk: AL West Houston Astros/Texas Rangers do not play this season after July 29th. All 19 of their meetings are before then.

9) Asdrubel Cabrera is the first ballplayer in 103 years to bat cleanup on Opening Day, then bat leadoff in the second game of the season.

Only one instance Interweb folks could find where a guy batted leadoff on Opening Day, then batted cleanup in the second game of the year— Hall of Famer Tim Raines, in 1989.

8) Obscure Stat of the Day: White Sox pitcher James Shields is the first pitcher since 1908 to allow four 1st-inning runs on Opening Day, but then go on to win that game.

7) Baltimore Orioles won in walk-off fashion in their last three Opening Day games.

6) Sporting News basketball writer Mike DeCourcy is from Pittsburgh; when Jeff Capel got the Pitt Panthers coaching job earlier this week, DeCourcy wrote an article about the Pitt job, and wrote about how Pittsburgh “….isn’t a basketball town.” Uh oh.

Why would you want to coach in the ACC at a school that isn’t in “a basketball town”?

5) Gonzaga will stay in the WCC next season, instead of bolting to the Mountain West.

4) A guy at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas risked $130,000 on Michigan to win SU; he got $50,000 for his trouble; after the Wolverines won, he quickly put the $50,000 on Kansas, +5.

3) Seems like the Arizona Diamondbacks wear a different uniform every night; I’m thinking it has to be at least a little distracting, especially early in the season.

2) Phillies’ rookie manager Gabe Kapler took his starting pitcher out in the 4th inning last nite in Atlanta, but there didn’t seem to be anyone warming up when he did it. The reliever took a long time to get to the mound and Braves manager Snitker got tossed when he objected to the pitcher being allowed his eight warmup tosses even after taking forever to get on the field.

1) Xavier Silas got signed by the Celtics this week; its been six years, over 2,100 days since he last played in the NBA. I remember seeing him play in an AAU tournament in Orlando when he was in high school— his dad James Silas was a terrific player in the ABA.

Imagine how great it must be to wait over six years and finally get that call again to play in the NBA? There had to be times he thought it would never happen, but it did.

Giants, Dodgers clash in L.A.
April 1, 2018

By Kyle Markus

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants will wrap up their season-opening four-game series on Sunday afternoon. The National League West rivals were on the opposite ends of the spectrum a season ago.

The Dodgers figure to be ultra-competitive once again while the Giants badly need to rebound in order to avoid a rebuild at the trading deadline. Optimism is high on both sides, as Los Angeles has a deep team while San Francisco made myriad moves this offseason which has it feeling good about a move back into playoff contention.

The season is very young but each side wants to get off on the right foot. The Dodgers are expected to send veteran left-hander Rich Hill to the mound while the Giants will counter with right-hander Chris Stratton.

First pitch for the game between the Giants and Dodgers is scheduled for Sunday at 8:37 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium. The matchup will be shown on ESPN.

You can bet on MLB odds at BookMaker.eu every day of the season.

Series Review

There have been three shutouts in this series so far, two by the Giants and one by the Dodgers. San Francisco pulled off a pair of surprising 1-0 victories in the first two games as heavy underdogs. Los Angeles bounced back with its first win of the season on Saturday, 5-0.

Odds Analysis

Los Angeles opened as -184 favorites, while the total sits at 7.5 shaded towards the 'over' at -115.

The Dodgers should be favored in this matchup as they are listed as heavy -260 favorites to win the N.L. West this season. The Giants actually have the second-best odds despite last year’s poor season because they made plenty of moves designed to improve the roster quickly. San Francisco is still a pretty big underdog at +550 odds.

Probable Pitchers

Hill has always been effective when he is healthy, and this early in the season he should be feeling good. The 38-year-old went 12-8 with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP a season ago. He struck out more than 11 batters per nine innings with a decent walk rate. Hill doesn’t have the name recognition of some of his rotation-mates but is very effective. The Dodgers should feel good about him getting the ball.

The Giants have been dealt a tough injury blow early on, losing ace Madison Bumgarner and No. 3 pitcher Jeff Samardzija to injuries. That has moved everyone up in the rotation and has left a hole for this game. Chris Stratton takes the ball for San Francisco, coming off a 4-4 campaign in 2017 to go along with an ERA of 3.68 in 10 starts.

Live Betting

The Giants added big names Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria to the team this season. Both are former superstars but have fallen off in performance in recent years. Both have great pedigree and if they can play well it will be a big bump in helping the team contend once again.

The Dodgers have an impressive rotation and their lineup is led by two of the best young players in the game in Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager. This is a team that has very few weaknesses.

MLB Pick

This one is easy. No matter who the Giants throw out there as the starting pitcher, the Dodgers will have the advantage as Hill is one of the better No. 4 pitchers in the major leagues. Los Angeles is playing at home and also has the better lineup.

San Francisco has some high hopes but the feeling here is that it will be another long season, and all of these aggressive offseason moves will go for naught. Take the Dodgers to cruise to an easy victory to start the season off right by winning the opening series against the Giants.

Smoak powers late Blue Jays comeback in 7-4 win over Yanks
April 1, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Shohei Ohtani won his major league pitching debut, throwing three-hit ball over six innings and leading the Los Angeles Angels past the Oakland Athletics 7-4 on Sunday.

The two-way star from Japan took the mound three days after he was the designated hitter in the opener. Reaching the upper-90s (mph) with his fastball and showing a nifty splitter, Ohtani struck out six and retired 14 of his final 15 batters.

Ohtani didn't hit while pitching. Albert Pujols was the DH and went 0 for 5.

Ohtani (1-0) pounded his glove following a 1-2-3 shutdown fifth. He walked one, and the only damage against him came on Matt Chapman's three-run homer in the second.

Mike Trout hit a tying double in the fifth and Justin Upton followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Keynan Middleton earned his first save.

Daniel Gossett (0-1) allowed four runs in four innings for Oakland.

ASTROS 8, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Gerrit Cole struck out 11 over seven innings in his Houston debut, and the defending champion Astros finished a solid opening weekend with a victory over Texas.

The hard-throwing right-hander, acquired in an offseason trade after he was the opening day starter for Pittsburgh last year, allowed two hits to help the Astros take three of four from their state rivals.

The first hit off Cole (1-0) was slugger Joey Gallo's opposite-field homer just over the tall wall in left field in the first inning against a four-man outfield.

Derek Fisher had a tying triple in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run on George Springer's sacrifice fly against Mike Minor (0-1), making his Texas debut and first major league start since 2014.

Carlos Correa doubled home two runs in the seventh, and AL MVP Jose Altuve had three hits to finish 9 for 16 in the series. Evan Gattis had three hits and three RBIs, including a pair of run-scoring doubles.

BLUE JAYS 7, YANKEES 4

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth to rally Toronto past New York.

After connecting off reliever Tommy Kahnle in the seventh, Smoak brought the crowd of 29,091 to its feet with his second career slam, a drive against David Robertson (0-1).

Smoak went 3 for 4 with a walk and six RBIs as Toronto gained a series split, winning the final two games.

Smoak's other grand slam also came against the Yankees, in 2015.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning, and Seung Hwan Oh finished for his first save.

NATIONALS 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Bryce Harper hit two home runs, leadoff man Adam Eaton capped his big opening series with a two-run drive and Washington beat Cincinnati for a three-game sweep under new manager Dave Martinez.

The Nationals are 3-0 for the fourth time in their history. They last swept an opening series in 2014.

Eaton returned from a knee injury that wiped out most of his 2017 season and figured prominently in all three victories, going 8 for 13 with two doubles, two homers, five RBIs and six runs.

Anthony Rendon homered off Sal Romano (0-1).

Gio Gonzalez (1-0) gave up five hits and one run while pitching into the seventh inning. Sean Doolittle allowed Phil Gosselin's two-run homer in the ninth before earning his second save.

DODGERS 9, GIANTS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Cody Bellinger hit the Dodgers' first home run of the season and Rich Hill threw six spotless innings as Los Angeles gained a series split with rival San Francisco.

All four games in the season-opening set were shutouts.

Yasiel Puig had an RBI double and two singles for the defending NL champions. Enrique Hernandez added two hits, including a two-run double.

Hill (1-0) allowed five hits and walked three, striking out five.

Chris Stratton (0-1) was charged with three runs in 5 1/3 innings for the slumping Giants, who became the first major league team since the 1988 Baltimore Orioles to total no more than two runs in the first four games of a season.

It's the first time the Giants have failed to score more than one run in any of their first four games.

After losing the first two 1-0, the Dodgers turned the tables with two shutouts of their own and scored a combined 14 runs.

The home run by Bellinger, last season's NL Rookie of the Year, ended an 0-for-11 start to his season.

MARINERS 5, INDIANS 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Dee Gordon and Mitch Haniger homered, Mike Leake pitched seven strong innings and Seattle topped Cleveland.

Edwin Encarnacion went deep twice for the Indians, his 29th career multihomer game.

Gordon and Haniger connected in the seventh, when the Mariners broke a 2-all tie on the way to winning the series.

Leake (1-0) gave up two runs and five hits. He has allowed three runs or fewer in all six starts since joining the Mariners late last season.

Gordon led off the seventh with a tiebreaking shot off Dan Otero (0-1). A few batters later, Haniger added a two-run drive off reliever Tyler Olson to give Seattle a 5-2 lead. They were the first runs Olson has allowed with Cleveland - last year he threw 20 scoreless innings in 30 appearances for the Indians.

Edwin Diaz struck out all three batters in the ninth for his second save.

TWINS 7, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jose Berrios pitched a three-hitter for his first career complete game, and Minnesota got two home runs from Brian Dozier in a rout of Baltimore.

Only one batter reached against Berrios over the first eight innings - No. 9 hitter Chance Sisco, whose third-inning double whisked by the raised glove of left fielder Eddie Rosario at the wall.

Berrios then retired 17 straight before Sisco bunted down the third-base line against the shift for a one-out single in the ninth. A walk and a single loaded the bases before Berrios retired Jonathan Schoop and Adam Jones.

Berrios (1-0) struck out six and walked one in his 40th career start. He threw 107 pitches.

Miguel Sano and Eduardo Escobar also connected for the Twins, who won two of three in the season-opening series.

Orioles starter Kevin Gausman (0-1) allowed three home runs and lasted only four innings.

CARDINALS 5, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Paul DeJong had the first multihomer game of his big league career, Luke Weaver held the Mets to one run in five innings and St. Louis avoided an opening three-game sweep.

DeJong went deep in the second inning, making him 3 for 3 with two homers in his career against Steven Matz (0-1). DeJong hit his second solo homer in the eighth against Jacob Rhame.

DeJong hit .285 with 25 home runs and 65 RBIs as a rookie last year, earning a $26 million, six-year contract.

Marcell Ozuna broke out of an 0-for-9 start with three hits, including an RBI double and a run-scoring single. Yadier Molina also homered for the Cardinals.

Weaver (1-0) struggled through a 27-pitch first inning but settled in and wound up allowing five hits, four of them singles.

RED SOX 2, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Hector Velazquez continued a season-opening stretch of strong starting pitching by Boston, working into the sixth inning.

The first four Red Sox starters - Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello and Velazquez - combined to give up two runs over 24 innings. The defending AL East champions won three of four at Tropicana Field under new manager Alex Cora.

Velazquez (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Joe Kelly closed for his first save.

Jose Alvarado (0-1) lost in relief.

MARLINS 6, CUBS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Dillon Peters threw six scoreless innings, Brian Anderson hit a three-run double to highlight a five-run fifth and Miami split its opening four-game series with Chicago.

Peters (1-0) helped a well-worked bullpen out in a big way, rarely getting himself into any trouble. He threw 89 pitches, 56 for strikes, striking out two and walking only one.

Jose Quintana (0-1) gave up six hits and six runs in six innings.

PIRATES 1, TIGERS 0, 1ST GAME

PIRATES 8, TIGERS 6, 2ND GAME

DETROIT (AP) - Josh Harrison, Starling Marte and David Freese homered as Pittsburgh completed a doubleheader sweep of Detroit.

The Pirates won the opener behind six no-hit innings from Trevor Williams (1-0), then took control of the second game with five runs in the fifth off Buck Farmer (0-1)

Pittsburgh swept the three-game, season-opening series against the rebuilding Tigers. The highlight of the day for Detroit was Miguel Cabrera's first home run of the season, a solo shot in the second game.

Chad Kuhl (1-0) allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings in the nightcap. Detroit starter Ryan Carpenter lasted three innings in his major league debut, yielding three runs and five hits.

Felipe Rivero saved both games for Pittsburgh.

In the first game, Michael Fulmer (0-1) gave up one run and four hits in eight innings. Gregory Polanco hit an RBI double in the first.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a quiet Easter Sunday

13) Toronto 7, New York 4— My biggest problem with the analytics movement is that is goes out of its way to diminish the manager’s role in how a team is run. Can’t do it.

In this game, New York led 4-3 in bottom of 8th; Toronto had men on 2nd/3rd with two out and Josh Donaldson (3-8 with 2 HR’s off Robertson) up. Justin Smoak (0-5 vs Robertson) was on deck; he had homered in his previous AB. What do you do?

Aaron Boone decides to walk Donaldson intentionally. Smoak hits a grand slam. Welcome to the big leagues, Aaron Boone. Being a TV announcer is a lot easier.

12) There are two basketball Hall of Fames; the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, in Kansas City.

There is at least one glaring omission from the College Hall of Fame: Jerry Tarkanian.

Tarkanian went 706-198 in his coaching career, won the 1990 national title at UNLV, made two other Final Fours. For him not be in the Hall of Fame (he is in the Naismith HOF) makes the College HOF look stupid.

11) Some people will cite Tark’s battles with the NCAA as a reason to keep him out, to which I say this: Eddie Sutton, who was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 2011.

From Sutton’s Wikipedia page: “The NCAA announced at the end of the season that its investigation into the basketball program had found the school guilty of violating numerous NCAA policies.[8] The NCAA deemed the violations so egregious that it seriously considered hitting the Wildcats with the “death penalty”, which would have shut down the entire basketball program (as opposed to simply being banned from postseason play) for up to two years.”

There is no valid reason for Jerry Tarkanian not to be in the College Hall of Fame.

10) One more thing on the College Hall of Fame: Norm Stewart is a 2007 inductee, but he never made a Final Four, went 8-8 in first round tournament games. Seriously?

9) When you see coaches at mid-majors getting fired these days after short coaching tenures, keep in mind that in the mid-90’s, Jay Wright went 31-51 in his first three years as Hofstra’s coach. Things turned out pretty well for him— he went 91-34 his last four years at Hofstra, before moving on to bigger and better things at Villanova.

8) This is first time since 2004 that team spending on baseball players’ salaries will decline from the year before.

7) Average major league payroll this season: $137,610,491.

6) As expected, Xavier promoted assistant Travis Steele to head coach to replace Chris Mack, who jumped ship to Louisville.

5) Of the 31 players who have 3,000 career hits, Ichiro Suzuki was 3+ years older than anyone else on the list when he got his first major league hit.

4) A Sarasota, FL homeowner found a surprise visitor in his swimming pool Friday night – an 11-foot alligator floating in the water. The gator began swimming away as it struggled to avoid capture. A deputy managed to drag the gator out of the pool with the help of a trapper.

3) If you had the White Sox as being the last American League unbeaten this season, you win!!!

2) Last Big 14 team to win the national title in basketball? Michigan State, in 2000.

1— Villanova took 40 3-pointers Saturday, only 25 2-pointers; wouldn’t be surprised if they move the college 3-point line back to where the FIBA line is.

April Pitchers Report
April 1, 2018

Major League Baseball trades places with as zany a March Madness as we have ever witnessed, ushering in America's favorite pastime as the sports flavor of the month in April. Let's open the season with one of our favorite handicapping angles – good month pitchers.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of April. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in April team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s April list. In addition also designated are the best and/or worst site results – home (H) or away (A) – within each pitcher’s April results.

I'll be back next month with May's Good Month Pitchers. Until then, it’s time to play ball!

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

Arrieta, Jake - 11-3 (8-1 A)

Now with Philadelphia and having diminishing velocity and less bite on breaking pitches, Arrieta will attempt to maintain high win percentage despite being on a lesser team.

Carrasco, Carlos - 9-4 (6-1 A)

Cleveland's No. 2 starter reached 200 innings for the first time a season ago. That made us realize just how good his stuff is with mid-90's heater, a big breaking ball, a killer slider and change-up to confound lefty hitters. No reason this excellence does not continue.

Cueto, Johnny - 11-4 (6-2 H)

With a drop in velocity, Cueto uses four pitches, variable deliveries and different arm angles to fool opposing hitters. Not the pitcher he used to be, Cueto has to step up early with Madison Bumgarner on the DL again.

*Keuchel, Dallas - 10-5 (4-2 A)

The left-hander does not throw particularly hard, but he knows how to pitch and keeps the ball low in the strike zone. Backed by a tremendous young and talented squad coming off a World Series-winning campaign, the victories should keep coming for Keuchel.

Martinez, Carlos - 10-3 (6-1 H)

Top line starter in the NL and now being under the guidance of pitching guru Mike Maddux should only make Martinez even more effective. With mid-to-high 90's fastball and opposing batters at a .145 average (in 2017) against his slider, Martinez should be a winner each month this season.

Porcello, Rick - 10-5 (4-2 A)

From Cy Young winner to pitching like “Cy Old” a year later, Porcello in truth is somewhere in between. His command was way off a year ago. Having won the best pitcher award in 2016, he was over-throwing the first four months of 2017. Look for Porcello to return to middle of the rotation starter and be effective early.

Strasburg, Stephen - 10-5 (5-2 H)

Known primarily as a fast starter with no finish late in the season, Strasburg might have put that tag behind him as his final eight starts of 2017 featured a minuscule 0.84 ERA. Three nasty pitches for Strasburg, whose has learned to pitch without his best stuff.

*Sale, Chris - 10-4 (6-2 H)

A dominant left-hander who is making the transition to lower pitch counts, Sale still has the 'stuff' to strikeout any batter in any situation. The fact of the matter is Sale is a very uncomfortable at-bat for any hitter.

Zimmermann, Jordan - 10-5 (6-2 H)

Zimmermann's 19-9 season in 2013 is a distant memory at this point and he's just 17-20 with Detroit the past two years. Though just 31, Zimmermann's margin of error has all but disappeared unless he has his best stuff.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS

Hughes, Philip - 5-10 (1-5 H)

Hughes will begin the season the DL with a strained left oblique but is "still in the mix" to pitch April 11, the first time the Twins will need a fifth starter. Has slid in all areas as a pitcher and is at best a fifth starter these days on almost any club.

*Kluber, Corey - 4-10 (2-6 A)

Hard to imagine Kluber is such a slow starter, but that has been his history. Once he finds his groove, the right-hander is light's out, but for whatever reason the first few starts of every season are problematic.

*Shields, James - 4-9 (2-5 A)

Shields starts the season as the White Sox "ace", which tells you about the current state of the Pale Hose starting pitching. At 36, the difference between his fastball and previously lethal changeup is not enough to anymore. Also, the command of the off-speed pitches is not what it used to be for the righty.

Teheran, Julio - 5-10 (2-6 H)

The Braves No. 1 starter was spooked by new hitter-friendly SunTrust Park and he pitched much better on the road last season. Teheran has loads of ability but could use the guidance of a smart and understanding pitching coach to reach his true potential.

Wood, Alex - 3-10 (2-7 A)

The Dodgers have and continue to tinker with Wood's delivery to make him as effective as possible. His 16 wins a year ago speaks to his talent and what he could do with more confidence. The 2018 season will probably determine the southpaw's career path.

LEADING OFF: Astros celebrate, snow for Yanks, Bartolo time
April 1, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

PARTY TIME

Jose Altuve and the Astros are set to celebrate their first World Series title when they play their home opener against Baltimore. Houston will unveil its championship banner before the game and give the ball to starter Charlie Morton, who was on the mound for the final out in Game 7 at Dodger Stadium. The Astros will get their World Series rings Tuesday, when Justin Verlander makes his second start this season. Altuve's swing is already in great shape - the AL MVP and three-time batting champion is 9 for 16 so far.

SNOW DAY

About 1-3 inches of snow was forecast to fall in New York ahead of the Yankees' much-anticipated home opener against Tampa Bay - though the overnight storm was supposed to stop early in the morning. ''I've never really played in snow,'' said slugger Aaron Judge, who grew up in California. ''I've played in cold conditions before. You've just got to bundle up. That's about it.'' Left-hander Jordan Montgomery, coming off a 9-7 rookie season, starts for the Yankees. ''I've thrown in hail before,'' said Montgomery, a South Carolina native. ''I think I'd rather snow.''

WHAT'S UP WITH THE NEW GUY?

Gabe Kapler is already catching heat from the home fans three games into his tenure as Philadelphia's manager, and now he and his rugged pitching staff open a series against the NL East-rival Mets. The Phillies used a big league-record 15 relievers in their first two games with their new skipper, plus six more in the third, and have allowed 27 runs during a 1-2 start.

Kapler's bullpen usage has been questioned, especially after he called on reliever Hoby Milner on Saturday before the left-hander had even had time to warm up - a scene that led crew chief Jerry Layne to say ''whoever's at fault on the Phillies' side should have to answer to Major League Baseball.'' After taking Sunday off, the Phillies will face Matt Harvey at Citi Field.

TAKING THE BART

Bartolo Colon is scheduled to start for the Texas Rangers in their first road game of the season in Oakland. The 44-year-old right-hander is set to join teammate Adrian Beltre as the only current players with at least 20 seasons in the majors. Both are in their 21st seasons. Colon will be the second-oldest Texas player behind Nolan Ryan, who was 46 when he made his final start in 1993.

SLOW STARTS

Former major league home run champ Chris Davis, now batting leadoff for Baltimore, is 0 for 12 this season. All-Star teammate Jonathan Schoop is 1 for 13. ... Cardinals leadoff man Dexter Fowler has started the season 0 for 13 with six strikeouts. ... Signed as a free agent in February, Logan Morrison is 0 for 11 with three strikeouts for Minnesota. He had 38 homers and 85 RBIs with Tampa Bay last year. ... Boston's Andrew Benintendi is hitless in 11 at-bats.

KEEP IT GOING

Lance Lynn makes his Minnesota debut at Pittsburgh after signing a $12 million, one-year contract in the offseason to join a Twins rotation that's off to a terrific start. Minnesota starting pitchers Jake Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson and Jose Berrios did not allow a run during the season-opening series at Baltimore, combining for 21 innings of five-hit ball. Lynn was 11-8 with a 3.43 ERA in 33 starts last season for St. Louis.
