All eyes on War Pass this Saturday at Aqueduct.
The Jury should be in this Saturday on War Pass after the Wood Memorial runs in New York. After running last (and supposedly sick - fever early in week) as a 1-20 favorite in the Tampa Bay Derby, serious doubts were cast over the future of War Pass. Immediately after the race authorities were forced to post watches on bridges all over the US.
On the bright side War Pass was sharp during a four-furlong work on last Thursday at Palm Meadows Training Center.
The top 2-year-old in American racing sped through the half-mile over a “fast” track in :47.40 in his first work since the Tampa Bay Derby debacle on March 15.
War Pass’s opposition in The Wood will include Court Vision, Anak Nakal, Tale of Ekati, Giant Moon, Inner Light, Roman Emperor, Spurrier, Texas Wildcatter, and possibly First Commandment and Gattopardo.
BTW a horse to watch is Tampa Derby winner Big Truck.
Big Truck, a son of sprinter Hook and Ladder (I know not good for KY Derby), and trained by Barclay Tagg for owner Eric Fein. Big Truck is out of 94 KY Derby winner Go for Gin mare Go for Ginny. Despite Hook and Ladder, Big Truck just might have the pedigree to win at a mile and a quarter...
Big Truck improved to three wins in seven starts and boosted his earnings to $336,880. A Triple Crown nominee, Big Truck boosted his graded stakes earnings to $194,500 with the win. Big Truck also won the NY bred only Bertram Bongard at Belmont (also won by the great 3 year old champion and NY bred Funny Cide in 2002).
Last year's Ky. Derby winner Steet Sense also won the Tampa Bay Derby.
Big Truck could proove to be a nice sleeper to use in exotics come May 3rd (assuming he runs).
wil.
