solid advice...

I sit in the sauna for 10 minutes (clothed) before my workouts. Stretch some in there and continue in the weight room.

My favorite, as I have big legs, is to lay on my back and wrap a towel around my arch and pull one leg off the floor, keeping knee straight, and pull towards head untill I feel the stretch. Do this for 3 minutes and compare off the ceiling the distance you can pull.

Then tilt the leg to the side towards the floor and stretch the illiatioid still with towel. Hammys are the key to lower back problems. Keep them flexible.

When you get to be over 40 stretching is great like a lot of you say.

:pope:

I've been walking for 19 years. Recently I've started having soreness in my hip so I've started to do aerobics on off days. Just search on youtube for "aerobics" and you will get quite a few hits.

If it took years to gravitate into a fitness level, then patience and determined focus can steer your body toward a different level. I would start with serious concentration on diet and nutrition as the background to build solid sleep and day energy. After that, go to what you enjoy and shape it into more of a workout. I agree with previous Wynn about not stretching early in any workout. I highly recommend swimming (total body, legs, stomach, back, arms, endurance) but get original and do whatever. I enjoy handling a basketball and do a workout, often during heat of the day, on a flat with no basket. Walking is no joke; I am a competitive runner and still weigh the same as I did when I was 20, but years ago discovered that walking ten miles tired me out as much as running. Along with other good advice in this thread, I would say relax, eat well, gradually yoga and stretch, and most important, amp up the things you enjoy into more determined exercise routines.

Never would have guessed you are 40. Playing tennis at 40 is damn good.

Highly recommend walking/biking. Don't skip breakfast and don't eat right before bed.

55yrs. walk and hike alot with the dog.

A HU for all ages.....if you get injured try Deep Water Aerobics.
I do it 3 times a week.
No weight on the joints(or injured body parts) and is excellent for flexibility and you can go at your own pace.

One of the few exercise routines that I really enjoy.
Try it.

I just turned 40 at the end of May. My 40th bday resolution was to get into shape. I bike 100-125 miles at a high level on a Mountain Bike a week split between gym (gym has no resisitance with wind and weather so more mileage) and Bayshore here in Tampa when it is not raining. Kinda real easy to goto to Bayshore and get motivated with all the eye candy down there in the late afternoon. Also, when finished with bike after replenishing with fluids, I walk and run about 4 miles total or tread mill for one hour as well.

When at the gym I fevorishly work on my abs, and in the process of building up my stamina to do some spinning. Gotta keep up with those young in shape female spinners... Also planning on getting a personal trainer as I think that I have gotten the stamina level to the point where it needs to be pushed to the next level along with gaining some muscle mass after losing most of the 10 lbs of gut that I had. Got the body fat down to around 17% range from the high teens to low 20's% range.

Right now, I feel as good as I have felt in a very long time by doing all the cardio. Sleep less at nite and still feel good. Rarely tired during the day after an early morning.

I agree with the post stretching, I have read that stretching is more important after the main workout in order to keep the muscles in shape.
