Hopefully, this will END all this GOAT talk about Payton

Payton seems to be a nice enough guy, but it drives me crazy when he gets only 1/2 of the standard line on quarterbacks: they get too much praise whey they win, and too much blame when they lose. He only got the first 1/2 of that for many years, and "skated" when he played poorly in the playoffs(which is pretty often, even the year that he WON, he had, if memory serves, 7 picks and 3 TD in the playoffs, and should thank his lucky stars he was up against Rex the Wonder Dog). Something tells me that's gonna change tomorrow. And he has been on a lot of good teams! Montana, 4 appearances, 4 rings, 4 MVPs, 11 TD with NO picks, and he was pretty good in the regular season, too, in a different era where receivers could be more than breathed on and they didn't throw a flag if you more than glared at the QB. He'd better get out before he needs more neck operations...

Aikman called him a Top 5 QB all time. He isn't.

He's a great guy, total class. Tremendous QB, maybe Top 10. Far too much praise given to a very good QB and great guy.

to be honest i am not sure if any QB could have helped Denver to win that game today, it was a mismatch right from the start

He is still the best qb of his generation.

Oh, you're gonna get a LOT more resistance to that statement now then you would've 24 hours ago, trust me. All those regular season stats, and one measly Super Bowl after all these years, he's a Rich Man's Dan Marino, sorry.

Keep looking at his playoff record. Very poor . He gets a 10 for the regular season and a 4 for the playoffs. So look at it any way you want. I'd put him in the top 10 Qb. The thing that I look at is how poor he plas in playoff games where his team was the favorite and playing at home.

He's still the greatest ever. Just because you win superbowls doesnt mean you are the greatest ever imo. So if Joe flacco wins 3 more rings.. Would he be the greatest? No. Or even if russel wilson won another 3 superbowls.. Would be the greatest? Superbowls dont define being the best. People fall in love with that. Peyton manning is hands down the best quarterback of all time, in his prime.

Montana is by far the best QB of all time, everyone with a brain knows that. Peyton is still a top 5 QB however.

I agree, people are too wrapped up in one game. The fact that he's won one and led 2 different teams to the SB isnt enough for some people, let alone all of the records he has set, and his comeback from a terrible injury to become elite again. Does that mean Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson were better QB's than Dan Marino? Would anyone take Roethlisberger over Peyton? I dont think anyone sane would say that Eli is better than his brother, even though he has two. Who has been more consistent year after year? Cant agree the best ever, but there's no QB i'd rather have in 2013.

Montana
Elway
Brady
Young
Staubach

Manning isn't cracking that list. Yes, he's cerebral. He studies, reads defenses, all of that. He also plays in an era that greatly inflates stats, so don't compare stats against the others on this list.

Anyone putting Manning above Montana?? Ridiculous.

Top 10?? Sure. Top 5, or best of all time?? Anyone thinking this is a fool.

Lol!

Yeah a quarterback who never threw for 30 tds in a season is a better qb than peyton lol. And im the fool? John elway over peyton manning haha. And brady over manning hmmm.

Montana i wont argue but to put brady over manning.... (Ill talk like you)... Those people should be executed you know? Lol. Because this is all that matters in life... But seriously the patriots cheated so Tom bradys resume is discredited. He should be nowhere near that list just like pete rose. Cheating mother fuckers. But who doesnt love Tom Brady? Belichek probably had a lot of peytons signals back from 2000-2003. But lately peyton is winning against them and the games are closer. John elway and tom brady over peyton. C'mon man. Peyton in his prime!? Stop i dont even wanna hear it cuz john elway wasnt an offensive coordinator on the field. Thats why peytons the greatest... Because he can break a touchdown and yards record with his mind. Throwing ducks. But in his prime he had a arm

Crazy Jim Irsay was spot on with his comments on Peyton prior to the Colts-Broncos regular season game. "Star Wars" numbers don't lead to Championships. Last night, Peyton substantiated Irsay's comments and what I have stated for years. When the pressure is at its greatest, Peyton is not at his greatest.

Legacy wise, Brady still goes down as the greatest qb of this generation; not Peyton. Outside of a fluke pass catch by tyree and a drop pass by welker, Brady would have more.

I agree that Brady will go down as the greatest QB of his generation. You cannot put up record breaking regular season numbers, go 1-2 in SuperBowls with a sub 500 playoff record and be considered the greatest QB of your generation. Sorry Peyton fans, but be objective. I am long time Colts fan, and I have no problem stating Brady is the man.

^ OMG. They cheated wa wa wa. Fucking cry babies blaming other things that they cant prove rather then what happens on the field. "Belichek probably had a lot of peytons signals back from 2000-2003." HAHA.

I love all the people who ridicule the Pats about Spygate, like they were doing something so fucking terrible. They were video taping from a different location then they were the year before. HAHA Like it made a fucking difference. Every team video tapes!! Everyone of them. But at the end of the year it doesn't help 31 teams, only 1 LOL!! Then on top of that, the Pats can win 3 championships in 4 years and its quarterbacks resume is "discredited". Does anyone have any fucking clue how hard it is to do that? Like their play on the field didn't even matter.

Here is a very simple breakdown to win a championship...Defense! Back in 97-04' the Pats had some outstanding defenses. Thats the difference folks. Its not surprising. Marshall Faulk can hold a grudge for as long as he wants (very unhealthy) but the reason his team lost was turn overs. 3 of them to be exact. Anyone remember that game? St. Louis dominated them. All they had to do was hold onto the ball they would have won and he wouldn't be complaining the rest of his life. But he blames mysterious video tapes that never existed. He really should look at the guys on the other side of the ball like Seymour, McGinest, Law, Millow, Bruschi, Vrabel. Thats who will win you a championship! Just like Chancellor, Smith, Wagner, Thurmond, Thomas and Sherman shut down that record breaking offense last night.

The simple truth is the Pats haven't had a defense since. That is why they win at a ridiculous clip during the regular season and fizzle out in the playoffs. Just like the Colts used to do and just like Denver did this year.

No matter how much preparation a team goes thru the play on the field will decide the winners 100% of the time. Video tapes from September and mysterious video tapes that never existed will not win a damn thing for you.

patsfanatic hit it right on. But I will go one step further and say that those defenses kept Patriots in the game but it was Brady who went for the kill when it matter. Without Brady, those 5 trips to the super bowl would never have happened. Montana, Brady, Unitas, Manning, Elway.

Yup. Their defenses were special, but Brady came thru when the time called for him.

Peyton Manning is not the equivalent of Joe Montana.

In winning back to back Super Bowls, here are Montana's playoff stats, week by week

1988
Divisional Round: 16/27 178 3TD 1 INT 100.5 QB rating in a 34-9 Win
Conference Championship: 17/27 3 TD 136 QB rating in a 28-3 Win
SuperBowl: 23/36 357 2 TD in a 115.2 QB rating 20-16 Win

1989
Divisional Round: 17/24 241 4 TD's 142.5 QB rating in a 41-13 win
Conference Championship: 26/30 262 2 TD's 125.3 rating in a 30-3 win
SuperBowl: 22/29 297 5 TD's 147.6 rating in a 55-10 win

So in back-to-back championship runs Montana threw 1 pick and his lowest rated game is 100.

Suggesting that Manning is better than Montana is laughable and absurd.
