the problem I see when reading poker books is that, some people waste time trying to remember what the book said about a specific situation. One of my poker buddies is always talking about books and authors and what they say about playing whatever hand etc and I don´t think it helps him much `cause he is somewhere between loser and a break even player...like I said, I play most of the hands, when i sit down at a table I want to play cards, not sit there and wait for pocket rockets

maybe I don´t have a strategy or don´t follow everybody´s advice, I just play all the hands possible, your probably right Side, perhaps what was at stake was too much, I don´t know, the more hands you play, the higher to possibility of winning, whaddya think?

I briefly read through the posts. When you called the all-in of your buddy with K,Q I have a few opinions.

First, when he told you to not call in your mind was he telling you to not call because he is your friend and had Aces or kings and didn't want you to get it in bad -- most likely never. Was he telling you to not call because he had a good hand but never premium (like 10's, 9's, 8's or 7's) most likely the case. The bottom line is that you had plenty of chips to fold a hand like K,Q which is a decent hand but in this spot it is rarely ever correct to call. The thing you must remember is that there is five players left and two of you make it. Thus, there is no need to call with K,Q.

Fold and tell him you only had 2,7 and wait for him to make a bad move when you have a better hand.

I will promise you are a losing player. There is just no way possible to be a winning player.

I think you are just playing around here. There is no way you think this way. If so please come to Detroit so I can take your money.

Alright guys, I know how stupid my first question is, I was tempted to start a new thread, but Ill leave it as a reminder lol...

I am playing very well... In my last 8 tournaments, I have placed in the points 7 of the last 8. Granted its about 40-50 ppl a night, with top 10 placing.. still...

I want to know what else I can do to become the best possible player...

I asked about pot odds, and I do need to work on that. Along with the general tracking of the pot size, and the math invovled...

What else should I be working on the next couple weeks?

I am also most uncomfortable playing 3 players. I am not sure why. I am not very comfortable heads up either, mainly becasue of the lack of experience of playing heads up against other talented poker players.

Any tips?

Experience is going to be your friend at this point. Just play as much as possible and try to adjust your reads.

Same answer to both questions...Position

In the tournys the next step is start using ur position to pick a few pots here and there when it looks like nobody has anything....
I put a link the other day in my getting better thread to a book that is free online. Its on 6 max cash games which is almost totally about playing position but i have to warn you its a deep read. Its not as deep as Bill Chens math book but it could easily confuse as much as help...

But 3 way or heads up is the same thing, its all about playing ur position at that point, in a 3 way pot u may find urself raising with 72os from the button and folding A10s in the BB.....

Harrington volume 2 gets a little into position play but just Googling the terms will probably bring u all the info u could ever use...

under options tab u can ck "hide from search" ...but i believe there are some programs out there that will find u anyway.
If he really is following you then u probably do something he thinks he can exploit...just try not to play any hands with him is possible and eventually he'll move on....

Conan im still appearing nightly at a site near you...feel free to drop a few buyins at my table sometime...LOL

Perfect opportunity to stack someone, you know he wants you, use that information. If it is phil ivey run, but I think you are losing value running from a random here, just stop and think for a second, figure him out, take his money

- 79 times out of 146 while in big blind (54%)
- 367 times out of 876 in other positions (42%)
- a total of 535 times out of 1171 (46%)

If these are your stats then you are playing way too loose especially for your experience level. You are playing about twice as many hands as you should be playing.

Have you ever seen a card that you didn't like?

Wow, you play a lot of hands. I only see about 20% of the flops, but admittedly I play extremely conservative 'til late in the tournament.

If you look at the rankings and stats sites the avg winning player finishes ITM around 15%...there are some with 5% and maybe some with 25% but most over a long haul will be 15%.
Its been awhile since i studied them but a Top 3 finish % for a winning player is around 4% i think.
These are online ofcourse. If ur talking about a live tourny, especially 1 that runs regularly it would not be unusual at all to see someone at the final table every time its played. When our local casino had weeklys i would easily final table 7-8-9 in a row, we have a local pro here who would walk in and win the thing damn near every time he showed up. In those local live games sometimes 3/4's of the field doesnt have a clue what they are doing. Nut peddling and stealing here and there go a long ways. But taking advantage of the people who just give their chips away early allows you to build a stack.....

The Big $1500 Tournament from our freeroll play is next week. Out of 350 I rank bout 8th, although those number are not a true reflection of playing ability because "bonus points" and whatnot for what you spend at the restuarant that host these.

My Least Favorite Cards are A2 Suited. Is this is a Call Preflop. What about a small raise. I hate having A2.

I also have trouble folding K7 K8 K9 suited. I feel I should fold those more. I will limp in if in a good position.

I have one friend that I highly respect his poker game and I asked him to watch me play one night. He told me he liked what he saw but was surprised I threw away suited connectors, such as, 78, 89, 10J. I started playing those, and I have been surprised how much I hit.
