The absolute best player at your position and he doesn't get in Hall. hate the Raiders but this 'Guy' should have been automatic.

If you list the best football team ever I think it would need a punter and Guy is the best ever at that.

I think that is the most compelling arguement. It's not that he was just GOOD. It's that many regard him as the BEST at his position.

What kind of message does this send to all aspiring punters? They have no 100% concrete role model. I mean a solid piece of history sitting there in Canton, it just isnt there for them.

Since I didnt see Guy play, I always thought Landeta was the best.

He is more hype than substance...his legend has grown through the years. His stats are not all that impressive.

His career average would have put him 25th this season in the NFL. I am always amazed at how much credit this guy gets.

inside the numbers

Played in 207 consecutive games

Punted 1,049 times for 44,493 yards, averaging 42.4

Had 210 punts inside the 20, with just 128 touchbacks

Had a streak of 619 consecutive punts before having one blocked

Has a record of 111 career punts in post season games

Had five punts of over 60 yards during the 1981 season

Ray Guy was selected to seven AFC Pro Bowl teams, and in 1994, he was named the punter on the National Football League's 75th Anniversary Team.

It's not the same.

Those arent sortable positions in a stats database.

The best place holder is Tony Romo

Are those stats posted as an argument for him getting into the Hall...or backing up the decision to not allow an average player in? Not bashing...just curious.

How difficult is it for a punter to have a consecutive games streak? They don't get hit or have to hit anyone the entire game. They take the field maybe 7 times a game at most.

This would seem to be a negative more than a positive. A 42.4 yard average is not very good.

Jason Baker of Carolina had 31 inside the 20 with just 12 touchbacks last season alone. He also had a 45.7 yard average.

I won't even waste my time trying to find how many others are close or have a similar streak going.

So he played on a lot of great teams?

The "Guy" had a great reputation for sure...his legend is rivaled by that of William Wallace. But he wouldn't start for over half the teams in the NFL this season. How he could be considered the best punter of all time is absurd.

Your last paragraph is absurd. He would be All-Pro now. I don't see 'hang time' in that stat run-down. He kicked deep and high. If anybody cared to check his HT vs. otehrs it could be reconstructed like RBI stats frombaseball seasons before those stats were kept.

Clip, you're too young to understand what Guy meant to the Raiders and the game...Ray Guy was the best punter in football.... hangtime, coffin corner, placement...you can't always pull out your stats and have the answer...of course time has passed, 95% of the players from the 70's are not as athletic and physical as todays players...to base your arguement on that is absurd.
