True, DiNiro actually learned to speak fluent Italian to play the role of young Vito in GF2 and won an Oscar for his performance in the role.
He also earlier had read for the part of Sonny in GF1 along with dozens of others actors before James Caan got the part. Martin Sheen was also tested for the role of Sonny and believe it or not Robert Redford was considered at one time for the role of Michael.
