Have you done it ? If you haven't done it your not qualified to make that call ! Sitting in your rocking chair and reading the newspaper are not what I would qualify as a expert opinion There are dangerous spots in Mexico, especially the borders, but you could say the same thing about some of the US inner cities too. Detroit comes to mind. Fact is anything south of Mexico City, is about as safe as I have ever seen. Most Highways are heavily traveled, just like here. How are they suppose to single your car out with thousands like yourself traveling the same route. So just make sure your not out driving at night or not keeping up with the other cars. Follow buses is a smart thing to do. Like I said in earlier post, don't go West to East within earshot of border towns. Not hard to do, since you can make the same route US bound and head farther south into Texas before crossing over. Awsome drive on gulf side !

This post is laughable. In 2010, there were 15,273 drug-related deaths in Mexico. Comparing Detroit to Mexico is very strange. Were there 15,273 drug-related deaths in Detroit in 2010? This is the most dangerous country in the world right now especially if you're American. I don't need to make the drive to tell it's very unsafe right now.

I wasn't comparing Detroit to the whole country of Mexico. Just saying, there are dangerous places in the US too, especially in the inner cities. Detroit's just an example, just like parts of Tijuana is an example of all of Mexico. Most of those deaths in Mexico are centered around the border towns, and you should stay away from them especially at night. I've done the drive south of Brownsville. There is a tremendous amount of Americans driving in that country. The odds are still highly in your favor nothing will happen, and you can increase your odds with common sense. Just because you can't handle it, doesn't mean others can't do it ! Go back and pick your games for fun and come back in here when you can contribute something outside of reading a newspaper article. Like some experience !!

We drove from Camp Pendleton, which is about 50 miles north of San Diego, through Tijuana to Ensenada in the mid-80's. Ensenada is about 70 miles south of the border. We didn't experience any problems then but obviously it was a long time ago.

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton we always made trips to Tijuana. I personally would avoid the country at this point in time but that's just my opinion.

Have you ever been on a convoy in Kabul, Afghanistan? Now, STFU!

Pick games for fun? Gave this board more than 120 CFB plays this year and hit more than 60%. You call that fun and I call that giving the board winners. I can see you're still bitter your Oregon play lost.

Sportsvant didn't ask anything about Afghan or anywhere else, he asked if any people here had made this run ! Why your even contradicting me or offering anything that you don't know anything about is ignorant ! Just giving my observation since I have traveled down there.

I drove from The Mexico-Belize border to Brownsville. I think its safer if you get to Texas, cross the border, then head west to San Diego and south. I had no problems. had to give a couple of cops a $10 or so, but no issues.
$10 for what?

I was in Tijuana a couple months ago. There were thousands of people crossing the border in both directions. Most of the violence with the drug gangs takes place well after midnight and mostly away from tourist areas. That's not to say that the rest of Mexico is safe.

Don't take my word for it. Take a look at the US State Department travel warnings for Mexico.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4755.html

"Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year. This includes tens of thousands who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico."

However, it does have its perils:

"Travelers on the highways between Monterrey and the United States (notably through Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros) have been targeted for robbery that has resulted in violence and have also been caught in incidents of gunfire between criminals and Mexican law enforcement. Travelers should defer unnecessary travel on Mexican Highway 2 between Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo due to the ongoing violent competition between DTOs in that area. Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and Tijuana. U.S. citizens traveling by road to and from the U.S. border through Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Durango, and Sinaloa should be especially vigilant. Criminals appear to especially target SUVs and full-size pick-up trucks for theft and car-jacking along these routes. "

And you told me in your earlier post that just because I can't handle it that doesn't mean others can't. And I'm telling you that you have no idea who I am or what I've done and driving in a convoy in Afghanistan tops just about any driving experience you've ever had. And please don't assume I don't know anything about Mexico as I've been to the border towns 3 different times and know exactly what's going on there. I don't comment on items I don't know anything about here at the RX.

I live down here 4months out of the year, five miles from the Matamoros border and cross the border maybe twice a week, but i wouldn't think about driving that distance. There is a better chance of winning a four team parlay than not having some type of confrontation, be it violent or non violent. If i am by myself i only walk and only go no m ore than six blocks in. There is so much more violence going on than the people here about. There were three people killed yesterday. One lady misssionary driving with her husband in Reynosa. A gang tried to run them off the road and when they wouldn't stop, shot her through the head. Two others were killed not far from there, two policia and a nother gang. The affluent nationals that come from Monterrey and Mexico City no longer travel at nite and no longer without five or six car caravans. They tell me they would rather stay at home or fly into Mcallen or San Antonio and drive from there.I'm on a board of directors for a building and 85% of the remaining board are Nationals. We have cancelled the last three meetings because there were not enough for a proxy vote. The problem is not at the borders but on into the interior and not that far in. The wanna be gangs are causing as much if not more of the trouble and killings. The two prevelent cartels have enought fighting to do between themselves and the few policia that are not on the payroll than worry about stealing car's.Juarez, Matamoros, and Reynosa are the three to avoid. I would find an alternate route.

one of my really good friend's father is Patricia Espinosa Cantellano. We talked about driving from Brownsville, Tx to Cancun recently and he said no way he would risk that. He cannot sleep (as his own son) in the same place two nights in a row. He has armed security around him 24 hours a day. He said to cross the country like that you must have someone who knows the area and people like the back of their hand and be armed. He said you must be willing to be frequently searched and pay off as many federales as needed as you will be demanded of money.

Do you find it odd that you are the only person in this thread that actually thinks this drive is doable? This includes people that have done it or know someone that has done it or actually lives there? That's very odd to me.

I'm just a poster giving my opinion as well and when I gave that opinion you told me I sit on the couch and read the newspaper and have no idea what I'm talking about. You are wrong...period. Move on.

I have to go to Tijuana very soon to apply for a work permit, and the may not let me back into the USA.

My folks have a house in Canun at the moment.

hence the question.

If they dont let me back in I will probably just have my car towed and will take a plan from TJ to CANCUN, but I thought I would ask.

I think the descriptions of the danger are highly exaggerated.
