the deal was fine...it was low risk

A starting NFL QB is such an scarce commodity that just the potential of someone being good gets them paid. Why the league had to put the rookie scale in place, socialism at its finest.

Don't quit your day job my friend.....Cutler is better than Kap......and Cutler blows

Kaep played the year behind the worst offensive line in football. Team was crushed with injuries. No chance for him with the coaches not letting him run.

I liked Kaepernick and would've rather gambled on his upside than the steady mediocrity of Alex Smith. However he just isn't accurate enough from the pocket. We've seen this for 2 straight years now. I thought he got a little bit of a pass last year since Crabtree was his fav weapon and he was out the first 10 weeks but not sure what excuses you can make for him now. He has regressed bigtime, even with time to throw he has been terrible.

Good defenses never last. i don't know every starter by heart but when they overpay Wilson, others will need to be cut. Look throughout history, good defenses dont last long in the salary cap era. Not to mention, it is Seattle, they are not meant to be good. Sherman will get hurt. Good corners never are good corners year after year after year.

There are those few exceptions vlad.

That Tampa Bay Defensive-Dynasty with Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice, Hardy Nickerson and others, dominated for a good decade...

The regression is due to his offensive line being the worst in the NFL. Kaep isn't Peyton Manning or Tom Brady but he has potential. The coaches don't want him running, so what we've had this year is him as a dropback QB behind a horrible offensive line that doesn't give him time. That's a situation that most guys would struggle in.

kaep sucks. he is not a good quarterback.

Yeah I've seen a pretty large sample size of him struggling with adequate protection. Sucking against Seattle is 1 thing but the Raiders? child please!

They call that PI on Jimmy Smith and he has a ring though.

poor decision making, poor reads, poor mechanics, etc etc. i don't even remember the jimmy smith call though. i've just watched him enough times to realize that he hit his peak already. any good year he had was made by his defense and lack of awareness by the other team on how to contain a scrambling QB. the NFL dc's catch onto that shit.

The San Francisco 49ers knew they couldn't head into the season with Blaine Gabbert making more than Colin Kaepernick.

That's why, after the two sides met Tuesday, they came to an agreement on a six-year contract extension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has the preliminary financial terms, and they are big. Incredibly big, if you consider only the guaranteed money, in fact.

Although the Jay Cutler contract — seven years, $126 million total — with the Bears appears to be holding up other deals (Alex Smith in Kansas City, Andy Dalton in Cincinnati), there was no way that Kaepernick's deal was going to come in under that.
49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh recently pumped up Kaepernick's tires, saying he believes that the fourth-year quarterback was primed for his best season to date. In two years of starting over his first three seasons, Kaepernick has gone 17-6 in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason, with his losses coming in the NFC championship game last season and in Super Bowl XLVII.

INDIANAPOLIS — Pressed about quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s future with the team, San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Kaepernick “absolutely” would be back in 2016.
Whether it's as the starter for Chip Kelly's team or not is still up in the air.

There has been some speculation about Kaepernick’s future with the team since Kelly was hired as head coach and whether the two men could mesh well. But Baalke shut down most of that when he said he expected the quarterback — even at a crossroads in his career — to return.

“I think the good thing is we have two guys [including Blaine Gabbert] who have proven they can go into games and play,” Baalke said at the Indianapolis scouting combine on Wednesday. “[Kaepernick] has done some awfully good things in his career with the San Francisco 49ers, and we expect him to come back.”<figure id="yui_3_18_1_1_1456343678076_1500" class="cover get-lbdata-from-dom go-to-slideshow-lightbox" data-orig-index="0"> View photo

Kaepernick’s 2016 salary becomes fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster April 1. Baalke said the expectation was that Kaepernick and Gabbert would compete for the starting job.
Although the team signed him to a contract extension in June 2014, Kaepernick’s career has gone sideways since then. He watched his first head coach, Jim Harbaugh, leave for Michigan and then suffered through an injury-addled year under Jim Tomsula, who was fired after just one season.
Baalke said that Kaepernick’s health is improving after he underwent three separate surgeries for three different injuries — non-throwing shoulder, throwing-hand thumb and knee — since November.
“His focus now is his health,” Baalke said. “He’s doing a good job with his rehab with the medical staff. That seems to be going very well. We just look forward to getting him back and working with this coaching staff. “
As for Kelly, Baalke wouldn’t say it, but he is seeking a better relationship with his newest head coach than he had with Harbaugh, who left with scorched earth beneath him. So far, Baalke said, the relationship has been great, even if they’ve been busy and “haven’t spent a ton of time together” because of time constraints with putting a coaching staff together and 17 straight days worth of draft meetings.
“There’s perception and there’s reality. Reality is what we deal with every day in the office; perception is what everyone else speculates on," Baalke said. “But it's been awesome. He is very easy to work with."

I think its too much money. Has always been more hype than production. His stats were terrible leading up to super bowl 48 although he had some very exciting games. Their D carried the team. If Im not mistaking SF's D was top 3.
