He is not worth the money. This is a QB who still has a lot of maturing to do as a passer. Watch the game film on him, he locks in on his initial read & either forces it to him or takes off with the ball. He also has issues with changing speed & arch on the ball when necessary. A prime example would be the deciding INT in the NFC Title Game. If he throws it with arch to the back of the pylons like he was supposed to, they go to the SB. Just 45 minutes of game tape & I could break down his flaws. He is not even worth the guaranteed portion of the contract at this point in his career.

They will regret this deal in the long term.

you could see most of last season that he was not as effective as the year before, teams catch on after seeing you for a year,he just was not allowed to do the same things last year as the one before

Yea that is my concern as well. We will have to see if he grows as player or not. Once teams learn to gameplan for these guys it seems like these QBs like Vick, RG III, and Kapernick are never quite as successful after that. Give me a pocket passer like Manning, Brady or Luck any day.

I agree. The next Mike Vick.

Nope, impossible, when you rely on defense as much as they do, your window is 3 years tops. Then they lose small pieces like Chancellor, Irvin, etc because they cant pay everyone. These guys are still on their rookie contracts and even overated Wilson will demand more than $850,000 or whatever he makes.

Every key player on the D is locked up. Chancellor is locked up through 2017.

Good defenses never last. i don't know every starter by heart but when they overpay Wilson, others will need to be cut. Look throughout history, good defenses dont last long in the salary cap era. Not to mention, it is Seattle, they are not meant to be good. Sherman will get hurt. Good corners never are good corners year after year after year.

The # on all these contracts are inflated for the agents PR. Only the signing bonus is legit. Tom Terrrific g0t approx 30 mil, no one including Kap is close. And NO the 61mil is NOT guaranteed.

This is definitely true and the teams know it. It is much easier to maintain a high scoring offense over time than it is a dominant defense.

A big reason for this is because QBs tend to be more durable and play longer than other positions. Defensive players in the modern game just don't maintain dominance for very long, tons of injuries on D and it only takes a few injuries falloff from a dominant peak. A few years ago Lamar Woodley was the future of the Steelers D, now he is playing a 2yr deal on the Raiders, same with Justin Tuck. Very few defensive players play well into their 30s anymore, game is just too demanding.

That being said, paying a 2nd tier QB 15-20mill a year out of a 150 million dollar cap is a no brainer. I can see criticizing a team like the Bears for paying Cutler but the 9ers have been 1 of the best run teams in the NFL over the past 5 years....

after reading this I don't think is a bad deal:

As the details have trickled out, we know it’s a bit more complicated. Last night, Pro Football Talk reported that only $13.073 million of the deal is guaranteed at signing. Kaepernick’s signing bonus was significantly smaller than several of those other quarterbacks had in their monster deals, and it’s because the structure is quite a bit different. According to PFT, the guarantees in his deal switch from injury-only to fully guaranteed on April 1 of each year.
That essentially means the Niners have the choice to move on from Kaepernick before the start of each season. You can see why the front office was reportedly ecstatic about the deal. If Kaepernick turns into the superstar they hope he can be, they’re paying market value for a top-tier quarterback and won’t mind footing the bill. If he doesn’t, they can move on whenever they want. It’s sort of similar to the situation Tampa Bay had with Darrelle Revis last year; the flexibility in that deal made it universally lauded. San Francisco has been making smart moves since Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh showed up. This seems like another one.

You realize Harbaugh took away his running plays until the last few weeks of the season, right? He started the year with Boldin as the only trustworthy WR other than Davis who missed games. Crabtree wasn't around for much of the year who is Kaep's favorite option. Without the threat of him running and minus his top WR for almost the entire year I'd say 3200 yards, 21 TDs, and 8 INTs is pretty solid considering he's not a dropback passer but was forced to be one to keep him healthy.

Thank you!!!

It's an awesome deal for the 49ers and Kaepernick structured it so the team could resign a bunch of players they wouldn't have if he wasn't okay with the deal the way it was. He's a team guy and he'll be a star for many years. Great deal for SF. Welcome back Vernon Davis as well (probably where some of the saved money goes).

"running plays" should be "designed running plays". Kaep still took off but they really limited him getting hit.

One more thing about Kaep... he plays in the best defensive division in the NFL and put up 20 TDs and just 4 INTs against teams not named the Seahawks. He's one of the top 7 QBs in football IMO.

Yes, I said Ryan. Two years ago, with protection and weapons, he is a stud.

Getty Images Colin Kaepernick is not going to get all of his $126 million contract. After leading the San Francisco 49ers to consecutive NFC championship games and one Super Bowl, Colin Kaepernick was rewarded with a "record" seven-year, $126 million contract. But after Kaepernick's nightmare season we are already seeing that the contract is not nearly as big as everybody made it out to be, and he could receive as little as $25.9 million.
The contract, signed last summer, gave Kaepernick a $12.3 million signing bonus and a 2014 salary of just $645,000.
Kaepernick was supposed to get his first large salary ($12.4 million) in the 2015 season. But because of the way the contract was worded, that salary is actually going to go down to $10.4 million.
Starting next season, Kaepernick's salary goes down $2 million each year if he is not named first- or second-team All-Pro, or if the 49ers don't play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80% of the snaps taken by Kaepernick, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.
The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, and Kaepernick ranks 22nd in quarterback rating, which means the de-escalator is going to kick in.
In addition, while many outlets were reporting that Kaepernick's deal included a record $61 million in "guaranteed" money, it turns out the money was guaranteed only for injury. Each year of the contract, the 49ers can decide to cut Kaepernick before April 1 and will not owe him any more money.

Getty Images Colin Kaepernick's guaranteed money is guaranteed only if he gets hurt.Kaepernick is almost certainly going to be the 49ers' quarterback in 2015. But if he has another disastrous season next year, the 49ers could potentially cut him before the 2016 season. All of a sudden, Kaepernick's deal would be for just two years and worth $25.9 million.
That's not bad. But it is a far cry from seven years and $126 million with $61 million guaranteed.

San Fran covered themselves nicely with this deal.

He's making less money because of his/team performance. It continues to go down if he doesn't turn up his play.
