The San Francisco 49ers knew they couldn't head into the season with Blaine Gabbert making more than Colin Kaepernick.

That's why, after the two sides met Tuesday, they came to an agreement on a six-year contract extension, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has the preliminary financial terms, and they are big. Incredibly big, if you consider only the guaranteed money, in fact.

Although the Jay Cutler contract — seven years, $126 million total — with the Bears appears to be holding up other deals (Alex Smith in Kansas City, Andy Dalton in Cincinnati), there was no way that Kaepernick's deal was going to come in under that.
49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh recently pumped up Kaepernick's tires, saying he believes that the fourth-year quarterback was primed for his best season to date. In two years of starting over his first three seasons, Kaepernick has gone 17-6 in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason, with his losses coming in the NFC championship game last season and in Super Bowl XLVII.

Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers struck a deal Wednesday on a new six-year extension, which sources said is worth over $110 million -- including a record $61 million guaranteed.
[+] Enlarge Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesColin Kaepernick, who is 21-8 as the starting QB for the San Francisco 49ers, will receive a record $61 million in guaranteed money as part of his new six-year deal.

The deal ties Kaepernick to the 49ers through the 2020 season and makes him one of the NFL's top 10-paid quarterbacks. He was scheduled to have made $1.073 million this season.
"Colin's hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas."
The extension also is the ultimate sign of confidence that the 49ers have no worries about Kaepernick's role in an offseason incident in Miami that police still are investigating.
The 26-year-old Kaepernick is 21-8 as the 49ers' starting quarterback, including playoffs, and has thrown for 6,420 yards and 38 TDs in those games. His 507 rushing yards in the postseason ranks second to only former 49ers great Steve Young among all quarterbacks.
He has led San Francisco to three straight NFC Championship games, including Super Bowl XLVII.
He threw for 3,197 yards, rushed for 524 more and accounted for 25 TDs and only eight interceptions during the 2013 season.
Kaepernick's deal is expected to have strong implications on potential deals for Cam Newton, Andy Dalton and Alex Smith this year, along with Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson next year, when they are eligible to sign their first NFL contract extensions.

meh....know they needed to lock him up, but this amount seems a tad bit out of whack. would have waited another couple of years to make sure he isnt a fluke

nah it is a good deal

the cap is about to go up a ton and QBs are gonna start getting paid more. The next batch of QBs to get their extensions will all get more than him.

Hell, Cutler just got paid by the Bears. I know these are big #s for fans to grasp but it won't look so big in a few years.

professional sports franchises are getting dumber and dumber with each passing year

I don't blame CK for taking the money, but did he just Joe Flacco the 49er's?

Hope so. Hawks can go into dynasty mode now.

they have a whole lot of young free agents of their own to contend with, better hope Pete figures out how to sustain greatness with turnover

He will never see the end of that contract. He is in the lower half of the league (17 to 32) in QB play.

Nope, impossible, when you rely on defense as much as they do, your window is 3 years tops. Then they lose small pieces like Chancellor, Irvin, etc because they cant pay everyone. These guys are still on their rookie contracts and even overated Wilson will demand more than $850,000 or whatever he makes.
