Monday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in total bases, four days into the season:
19— Adam Duvall, Bos
18— CJ Cron, Colo
17— Yoan Moncada, CWS
14— Xander Bogaerts, SD
13— Wander Franco, TB
12— Trayce Thompson LA, Charlie Blackmon Colorado, Aaron Judge NYY

Tweet of the Day
“When I graduated college and I was looking for a grad assistant position, Lou Henson hired me. It showed the quality of character he had that he’s hiring the son of a rival of Big Ten school’s coach’s son. He didn’t worry about it. He didn’t care about that.”
San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher, whose dad Jim used to coach Minnesota

Monday’s quiz
Since 1985, what is the lowest seed to win the NCAA championship?

Sunday’s quiz
Jamie Foxx’s character Willie Beamon played QB for the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday; Beamon wore number 13 for the Sharks.

Saturday’s quiz
69 was the most points Michael Jordan scored in an NBA game, on March 28, 1990 against the Cavaliers. He also had 18 rebounds, six assists and four steals in that game.

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

— They were talking on the Rockies-Padres game Saturday night how umpire Pat Hoberg is the best umpire in the major leagues on balls/strikes, he even graded out perfect in one game last year. In nine innings, he didn’t miss one pitch, which is pretty impressive.

— Red Sox 9, Orioles 5— Boston take two of three in this series, scoring nine runs in all three games; they are the third team in baseball history to score at 9+ runs in three straight games to start a season (’76 Reds/’78 Brewers).

— Rangers 2, Phillies 1— Bruce Bochy’s Rangers are 3-0; they scored 27 runs in their first two games, then won this one with pitching- their bullpen got 10 outs, allowing one baserunner. Phillies were 1-8 with runners in scoring position.

— Guardians 6, Mariners 5 (10)— Cleveland scored winning run on a throwing error by the catcher on a potential double play ball; Guardians went to Seattle and won three of four games to start the season.

— Mets 5, Marlins 1— Kodai Senga allowed one run in 5.1 IP, winning his first major league start; Tommy Pham went 3-4 with three RBI.

— Twins 7, Royals 4— Kansas City was 15th team since 1940 to get shut out in its first two games of a season; Joey Gallo hit homers off of two KC relievers to hand the Royals their third loss.

— Bronx 6, Giants 0— New York blanked the Giants twice this weekend; rookie Brito threw five shutout innings, needing only 76 pitches. Stanton hit a 485-foot homer, the second-longest of his career. Judge hit his second homer in three games.

— Arizona 2, Dodgers 1— Jake McCarthy knocked in the winning run with a 9th inning drag bunt as the Diamondbacks split four games in Chavez Ravine. Dodgers scored 18 runs in their two wins; both Arizona wins were by 2-1 scores.

— Angels 6, A’s 0— Tyler Anderson tossed six shutout innings; he looked like Steve Carlton against a feeble Oakland offense that scored three runs in three games this weekend.

— Cardinals 9, Blue Jays 4— St Louis got nine runs in 3.2 IP against Chris Bassitt; Nolan Gorman hit a couple of homers for the Redbirds. St Louis scored 22 runs in three games this weekend, but only won two of the three games.

— Nationals 4, Braves 1— MacKenzie Gore allowed one run in 5.1 IP, the Washington bullpen got the last 11 outs in their first win of the season. Nationals turned three double plays.

— White Sox 6, Astros 3— Teams split their 4-game series; Clevinger threw five shutout innings for the Pale Hose. Now would be a good time to play Houston, with Altuve/Brantley out of their lineup. Brantley should be back in 7-10 days, Altuve is out until June.

— Rays 5, Tigers 1— Tampa Bay outscored Detroit 21-3 in their 3-game sweep; Jeffrey Springs tossed six no-hit innings here, allowing only one baserunner.

— Hawks 132, Mavericks 130 OT— When Dallas traded for Kyrie Irving, they were 28-26; they won their first three games after the trade, but now they’re 37-42, having lost seven of their last eight games. Chemistry is a funny thing in basketball; you can’t buy it.

— Trailblazers 107, Timberwolves 105— Portland was down four starters; they had lost 11 of their last 12 games, but they pull the upset as 19.5-point underdogs, the 2nd-biggest NBA upset in the last 30 years (Orlando (+21) beat the Bulls in 1992).

— Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl scored his 30th power play goal of the season Saturday, just the fifth NHL player to do that (Mario Lemieux did it twice).

— San Diego State is third team ever to win consecutive NCAA Tournament games by one point, joining St Joe’s in 1981, Loyola Chi in 2018 on that short list.

“I got to live out my dream because of college basketball. Sure, I was a golfer and I went to Houston to be on the golf team. Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……. (plus, XFL trends)

— UConn 76, San Diego State 59
Huskies were dominant, winning their tournament games by 24-15-23-28-13-17 points.

UConn has won five national titles, under three different coaches, all since 1999; they were a #1-seed only one of those five years, and that year, Huskies were a 9.5-point underdog in the final, in ’99 against Duke.

San Diego State had a great year, but they shot 32.2% from the floor in this game.

— Padres 5, Arizona 4— Dahl/Kim hit back/back homers in the bottom of the ninth, after Arizona took the lead in the top of the ninth. San Diego has now won three in a row.

— Guardians 12, A’s 11 (10)— Seth Brown hit a two-out, two-run homer in bottom of 9th to tie the game; Cleveland scored twice in the 10th to win it.

Oakland led this game 6-2 in 2nd inning, 8-5 after five innings. Oy.

— Tigers 7, Astros 5 (11)— Vierling went 4-5; his 11th inning home run was the game-winner. Abreu’s homer in the bottom of ninth sent the game to extra innings.

Astros are 2-3; in four of the five games, the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Angels 7, Mariners 3— Angels’ bullpen got 13 outs, allowing only two baserunners. Ohtani hit another home run. Seattle has lost four in a row after winning their opener.

— Brewers 10, Mets 0
Anderson/Turang homered for Milwaukee, which didn’t homer in its first three games, which hadn’t happened since 1976.
Freddy Peralta tossed six shutout IP, allowing five baserunners.

— Giants 12, White Sox 3
San Francisco hit seven home runs in this game, four of them in one inning.
Giants’ first nine games this year are against American League teams; their first NL game is against the Dodgers next Monday.

— There are 1,200 names in the college basketball transfer portal; the season ended last night. There are 363 Division I basketball teams, which means an average of 3.31 players from every team in the country are bolting to another school. It is crazy, and it makes handicapping games really difficult, at least the non-conference games before Christmas.

— NBA’s Atlanta Hawks are 39-39; they’ve scored 9,209 points and given up 9,210. They are 24-24 against teams from the East and 15-15 against teams from the West. They have been within one game of .500 for 73 consecutive days, during which time they changed head coaches.

— Angels’ 3B Anthony Rendon loses $817,240 for his 4-game suspension after he got into an altercation with a fan in Oakland last week. Rendon makes $38M a year, more than Mike Trout makes; he should never get mad at anything.

— Here are trends for all eight XFL teams, seven weeks into a 10-game regular season.

Five of their last six games stayed under the total.

Vipers are 0-4 when they score less than 26 points.

They were 0-6, then upset 6-0 Defenders last week.
Six of their seven games went over total.
Guardians are giving up 30.6 ppg.

St Louis Battlehawks (5-2)
Both their losses are to 6-1 Defenders (34-28/28-20)
St Louis allowed 18 or less points in its wins.
Battlehawks covered both times they were favored.
St Louis is 3-2 ATS as an underdog.
Three of their last four games stayed under the total.

San Antonio Brahmas (2-5)
San Antonio scored 12 points LW; they had a 97-yard kick return TD.
Brahmas were held to 15 or less points in six of seven games.
Six of their seven games stayed under the total.
Average total in their last four games: 25.8.
Their last three games are all at home.

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— I’m hoping to start posting daily baseball knowledge this Friday; in the meantime, I started doing some NFL research for the 2023 season on Tuesday, some of which I’ll post here in the next few days.

Weird Stat of the Day: over the last 22 years, under is 17-4-1 in Seahawks’ home openers- they are 18-2 SU/15-5 ATS in their last 20 home openers.

Also, Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t been favored in any of their home openers since 2010, and they made the playoffs twice since then, so they had a couple good teams.

— NFL Draft is still three weeks away; I’m not a big fan of reading mock drafts, it is just people guessing on picks, to try and draw attention to their work. Front office people aren’t going to spill the beans on who/what position they want to target, so writers have to guess, and if a guy does more than one mock draft, the guessing multiplies exponentially.

— Las Vegas Raiders signed former Patriots’ QB Brian Hoyer to back up Jimmy Garoppolo.

Speaking of Patriots’ QB’s, word has it that Mac Jones called coaches at Alabama during this past season, looking for help for the Patriots’ offensive struggles. Apparently Mr Jones doesn’t think much of Matt Patricia/Joe Judge, the New England assistants who were coaching Jones, a 2nd-year QB. Can’t say I blame him.

This ticked off Bill Belichick; now comes word that the Patriots shopped Jones around this winter, to the Bucs, Commanders, Raiders and Texans.

Former Alabama assistant Bill O’Brien is back in Foxboro now, which will makes Jones’ life a lot easier, assuming Belichick doesn’t trade him this spring.

— First six days of baseball season, over is 44-34-1, lot of offense. First five days of last season, under was 41-27-7. Banning the shifts has made the game more fun to watch.

— Weird that UConn was unranked in the preseason college basketball top 25, and they won the national title, while North Carolina was the preseason #1 team, and they even didn’t make the tournament.

Speaking of UConn, they’re in a 4-team tournament at Madison Square Garden in November with Louisville, Indiana and Texas. Pretty good preseason event.

— San Diego Padres have a payroll of $249,061,645 this season, a huge payroll; right now, their payroll obligations for the 2027 season is $145,545,455- that’s four years from now!!! And that doesn’t include Juan Soto, who will be a free agent after the 2024 season.

By way of comparison, Oakland A’s have a payroll of $59,265,000 this year; they have $13M on the books for 2024 (Aledmys Díaz/Jace Peterson) and beyond that, their obligations are $0, as in nothing, bupkis.

Arizona 8, Padres 6— San Diego led this game 5-1 after five innings, but Arizona scored four runs in 8th inning to snap the Padres’ 3-game winning streak.

Manny Machado was supposed to be San Diego’s DH; he got called out on strikes because of a pitch clock violation in the first inning, then got thrown out of the game for arguing. Not good.

His replacement, Nelson Cruz hit a home run, but it was a cruddy day for the Padres.

Marlins 1, Twins 0— Sandy Alcantara was masterful, throwing a 100-pitch complete game, allowing only four baserunners. Avasail Garcia homered for the Marlins’ only run. Game took 1:57 to play; I’m guessing that stadium vendors HATE the new pitch clock rules.

Mariners 11, Angels 2— Coming into the game, Teoscar Hernandez was 1-17 this season, but he hit two homers, knocked in four runs as Seattle snapped their 4-game losing skid. AJ Pollock also homered twice for the Mariners.

Brewers 9, Mets 0— Mets have a payroll of $357,763,333 this season, by far the biggest payroll in MLB; they lost their last two games by a combined 19-0, to a Milwaukee squad with a payroll of $121,884,960.

Newly-acquired Brian Anderson homered twice, knocked in six runs; Milwaukee’s play-by-play guy on TV is also named Brian Anderson.

A’s 4, Guardians 3— Tony Kemp’s walk-off single sent the announced crowd of 3,407 home happy. Oakland is 2-3 this season; the opposing starting pitchers in their wins were Ohtani and Bieber, couple of All-Stars. A’s have shown some spunk in the season’s first week.

By way of comparison, the A’s AAA team in Las Vegas drew 6,950 fans for their game Tuesday, a 7-6 loss to Oklahoma City.

The A’s franchise somehow turned a $29M profit last year; the owners are cheap bastards, but the front office, coaches and players are doing their very best. We’ll see how they make out.

Rays 10, Nationals 6— Tampa Bay scored five times in 9th inning to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat; at 5-0, they’re the last unbeaten team in the big leagues.

Luke Raley tied the game with a 9th inning homer, then Josh Lowe put the Rays ahead 7-6 with a homer, and Yandy Diaz capped off the huge inning with a 3-run homer.

— Last week, Major League Baseball decided to voluntarily recognize minor league ballplayers as part of the Players’ Union; here are some of the changes.

Triple A salaries go from $17,500 a year to $35,800
Double A salaries go from $13,800 a year to $30,250
High Single A salaries go from $11,000 a year to $27,300
Single A salaries go from $11,000 a year to $26,200
Complex league salaries go from $4,800 a year to $19,800

Tweet of the Day
“I think the last several weeks I’ve been able to reflect on a lot of things. The one thing I can tell you without question: I missed my job. I love my job and I want to do my job for a long time. That’s what is positive. Now, for me to be effective doing that, I think I have to wake up a little bit and maybe do some things from a lifestyle standpoint, a personal habit standpoint, that I’ve been very, very, very inconsistent with my entire adult life.

And I said that jokingly earlier, can you imagine a doctor telling you to lose weight, eat right and exercise? I’ve been told that a long time, but I’m taking that serious for the first time I probably have in my life.”
Bill Self
