Wednesday’s 6-pack

College basketball scrimmages this month, with Big East teams:
October 15— Marquette-Loyola Chi
October 22— Creighton-Iowa State
UConn-Harvard
Georgetown-Temple
Villanova-VCU
October 29— Marquette-Missouri

Quote of the Day
“People say New Yorkers can’t get along. Not true. I saw two New Yorkers, complete strangers, sharing a cab. One guy took the tires and the radio; the other guy took the engine.”
David Letterman

Wednesday’s quiz
In the old TV show Magnum PI, what were the names of Higgins’ two dogs?

Tuesday’s quiz
Daryle Lamonica played QB for the Raiders, the first time they were in the Super Bowl (SB II)

Monday’s quiz
San Diego Padres have played in two World Series, losing both; Hall of Famer Dick Williams managed them in 1984, future Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy in 1998.

*************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

Before we start today, a word of thanks to two people and the folks who work for them.

Three years ago today, my retina detached in Las Vegas; I had an operation 10 days later, with Dr Mallick fixing my retina. I am eternally grateful to him and his staff for their expertise. He has moved to New Jersey since then; hope he is doing well.

Few months later, I had to get cataracts removed from that eye, which were a by-product of the retina surgery. Dr Lemanski and her staff did a great job, so now my vision is good again. I’m very appreciative of both these great doctors and the skilled people who work for them.

— My Question of the Day, and I’ve given this one some thought— I’m not 100% sure of my answer, but if you were the GM of the Baltimore Ravens, and you made $2M a year or whatever it is that job pays, would you pay Lamar Jackson $40M a year to be your quarterback?

Jackson is 40-14 in regular season games with Baltimore, 1-3 in playoff games.

If your $2M a year job depended on whether the Ravens won/lost, would you pay Jackson to be your franchise QB? Ravens are going to have to make the decision pretty soon.

By the way, if I was the Ravens’ GM, I’d pay Lamar.

Phillies 7, Braves 6
Nick Castellanos went 3-5 with 3 RBI and had a sliding catch to end the game. Phillies are 3-0 so far in these playoffs.

— Braves weren’t swept in any series this year, first time in 18 years that happened in the major leagues. This year, Atlanta was 18-2 in Game 2 of a series when they lost the opener, and the two times they lost, they won the third game both times.

Astros 8, Mariners 7
Yordan Alvarez hit a walk-off HR to cap Astros’ big rally.
Seattle led 7-3 in 8th inning.
Top three guys in Seattle lineup went 7-13 with 5 RBI
Verlander gave up six runs in four IP.

— Of the 26 players on Seattle’s roster for this series, 17 were acquired via trade, only 6 are home-grown players. Astros have 14 home grown players, with nine acquired via trades.

New York 4, Guardians 1
Cole allowed one run, got 19 outs on 101 pitches.
Rizzo hit a two-run homer.
9th-place hitter Bader also homered.

Dodgers 5, Padres 3
Dodgers led 5-0 in third inning.
Dodgers didn’t get any hits after the third inning.
LA used four relievers who threw four shutout innings.

— NFL teams who’ve gone over the total the most this season:
Browns, Raiders, both 4-1. Raiders 3-1-1

NFL teams who’ve stayed under the total the most:
Bengals, Colts both 5-0

— You see that Allstate commercial with Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid drawing mustaches on the face of people sleeping on the airplane? Apparently in real life, Reid loves to sketch; when he doodles, he sketches faces a lot.

Reid grew up in the Los Angeles area; his father painted sets for stage productions in LA.

— UCLA Bruins football team is 6-0 for the first time since 2005.

— Oklahoma Sooners got waxed 49-0 by Texas last week, first time the Sooners got shut out since 1998, when Texas A&M shut them out, 29-0, when John Blake was Oklahoma’s coach.

— I neglected to post this Sunday, because it happened at 2:25am Saturday night, but there was a great comeback out west, with Oregon State scoring on a 56-yard TD pass with 0:13 left to beat Stanford, 28-27. Was a terrific game, but this was an ugly loss for the Cardinal.

— When the Tampa Bay-Cleveland game went extra innings the other day, had to be reminded that there are no ghost runners in the playoffs, which is a good thing, the way it should be.

Am looking forward to when they announce the rule changes for next baseball season; pretty sure the ghost runner will still be a thing, but shifts will be gone and a pitch clock figures to be added. Not really sure who that will help.

— Kansas Jayhawks are off to a surprising 5-1 start; their game Saturday was on FOX, with Jason Benetti as the announcer. They showed a guy standing behind Kansas coach Leipold; apparently he is the analytics guy who stands right behind the coach to give him his input on any strategic decisions that pop up.

Odd thing is, the guy apparently asked the FOX people not to show him or say his name on the air; no idea why, but Benetti did quickly say his name on the air.

— Whoever put a TV camera inside the pylon on the goal line deserves a big raise.

— Denver QB Russell Wilson has a torn lat in his throwing shoulder; he got some platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in the shoulder, and will try to play thru the injury.

— NFL divisions records against the spread, in non-division games:
NFC East— 9-5 ATS, 5-0 as a home favorite.
NFC North— 6-6 ATS, 4-2 at home.
NFC South— 5-7 ATS, 2-5 at home.
NFC West— 6-8 ATS, 1-5 as a favorite.

AFC East— 9-5 ATS, 6-2 on road, 5-1 as a favorite.
AFC North— 7-7 ATS, 3-2 as an underdog.
AFC South— 6-6 ATS; they were an underdog in 10 of 12 games.
AFC West— 4-8 ATS, 0-4 as a home favorite, 1-0 as an underdog.

Thursday’s 6-pack

College basketball scrimmages this month, with ACC teams:
October 22— Miami @ Florida
NC State-Davidson
North Carolina-Rutgers
Virginia-Maryland
October 23— Wake Forest-Ohio State
Virginia Tech-Richmond

Quote of the Day
“If it is to be, it is up to me.”
Bruce Arians

Thursday’s quiz
When the Astros won the World Series in 2017, who was their manager?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the old TV show Magnum PI, Higgins’ two dogs were Zeus and Apollo.

Tuesday’s quiz
Daryle Lamonica played QB for the Raiders, the first time they were in the Super Bowl (SB II)

**********************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— When you draft a QB in the first round, when does he make his debut? Steelers have already put Kenny Pickett in; this looks like a lost year for them, so might as well get the kid experience now, but Tennessee Titans are contenders— when do they put Malik Willis on the stage?

There is no template for how this works; three rookie QB’s played in Week 1 last year, Joe Burrow was the only one in 2020. Green Bay drafted Jordan Love in 2020 and he may never start for them, with Aaron Rodgers still there.

Three first round QB’s in 2016 have had varying degree of success; Jared Goff didn’t play until Game 10— he had pretty good success under Sean McVay, almost no success with Jeff Fisher and Dan Campbell.

Carson Wentz did well early with the Eagles- -he got hurt late in the season where they won the Super Bowl, but now he is on his third team in three years. Denver drafted Paxton Lynch; he played in the USFL last spring, and wasn’t even a full-time starter there.

It is part of what makes the scouting/draft part of the NFL so interesting. No one knows for sure what the recipe is for developing a great QB.

— Most interesting story line in NFL this week might be Ravens-Giants, with Giants’ DC Wink Martindale coaching against a team he worked for the last ten seasons, during which time they went 93-69, winning one Super Bowl, contending to get into couple of others.

When a coach who has been somewhere for 10 years “mutually parts ways” with his employer, you figure he wanted something the team didn’t want to give him (a contract extension?), so this week’s game has to have a little extra meaning to him.

— Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera spoke the truth Monday, when asked why his team was lagging behind their division rivals— “Quarterback” was his honest reply.

So of course, Rivera apologized Tuesday, because God forbid someone get their feelings hurt. Washington plays in Chicago tonight; did Rivera light a fire under his team, or will things fall apart, which would eventually cost Rivera his job?

Braves 3, Phillies 0
Game was scoreless thru five innings.
Kyle Wright got 18 outs on 83 pitches.
Teams combined for only seven hits.
Series heads to Philly, tied 1-1.

Padres 5, Dodgers 3
Game was 3-3 after three innings.
Machado, Cronenworth both homered.
San Diego bullpen threw four shutout innings.
Series heads to San Diego, tied 1-1.

Louisiana 23, Marshall 13:
Marshall led 7-3 at halftime.
Ragin’ Cajuns kicked FG’s of 33-42-52 yards.
Marshall was only 1-11 on third down.
Total yardage: 338-276, ULL

— Home teams went 24-13 in the baseball playoffs last year; so far this year, home teams are 7-8 in playoff games.

— Over last decade, Arkansas Razorbacks are 0-4-1 ATS as a road favorite; they’re a small road favorite at BYU this week.

— Was looking at a mock draft for the 2023 NBA Draft; only one of the first five picks is a kid who will play in college this year. Only one of the top 30 picks is a kid who played college ball last season.

I’m thinking that pretty soon, kids will be able to go directly from high school to the NBA, like they could 20 years ago, and that will help college ball. Having players in college for only one year does nothing for the college game; having kids play at the same school for 2-3 years is a much better option, even if some of the most talented players bypass college altogether.

— When I was a lot younger, Jack Warden was my favorite actor; I used to joke with a friend of mine that Jack Warden was in every movie ever made. In fact, he has 164 acting credits, last of which was The Replacements in 2000.

My four favorite Jack Warden movies:
Heaven Can Wait
The Verdict
Bulworth
Brian’s Song

— When you get a product delivered by Amazon, they take a picture of where they left it, and they e-mail it to you. I mean, they leave the stuff on my stoop, kind of hard to miss it, but it is still kind of cool. Their products are never late; excellent customer service.

— Weird NFL scheduling; 49ers play the Rams in LA on October 30, then don’t have another true road game until December 15.
October 30 @ Rams
November 6— bye week
November 13— vs Chargers
November 21— vs Arizona in Mexico City
November 27— vs New Orleans
December 4— vs Miami
December 11— vs Tampa Bay
December 15— Thursday night game in Seattle

— Must be fun to live in Los Angeles; always something legitimately fun going on. Tuesday, for example, they had Game 1 of the Padres-Dodgers series, and LA Kings opened their NHL season at the same time at Staples Center.

— Buffalo Bills are favored in Kansas City this week; Patrick Mahomes has never been a home underdog in one of his starts, Overall, Mahomes is 7-0-1 ATS as an underdog.

— Rookie QB Skylar Thompson will make his first NFL start when the Dolphins host Minnesota Sunday; Teddy Bridgewater is expected to be his backup. If Bridgewater is cleared to play, not sure why he can’t start, unless it is because he won’t practice much this week.

Friday’s 6-pack
Some interesting spreads for the NFL this week:
— 49ers (-5.5, 45.5) @ Atlanta
— Patriots @ Cleveland (-2.5, 43)
— Jets @ Green Bay (-7, 45)
— Jaguars @ Indianapolis (-2, 42)
— Vikings (-3.5, 45.5) @ Miami
— Ravens (-5.5, 45) @ NJ Giants

Alleged Quote of the Day
“All my problems will be solved if I can just get a marquee quarterback.”
Commanders’ owner Daniel Snyder allegedly said this before Washington traded for Carson Wentz

Friday’s quiz
Who was Washington’s QB the last time they won a playoff game?
Hint #1- This happened in 2005
Hint #2- The QB is now a QB coach in the NFL

Thursday’s quiz
When the Astros won the World Series in 2017, AJ Hinch was their manager.

Wednesday’s quiz
In the old TV show Magnum PI, Higgins’ two dogs were Zeus and Apollo.

*****************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here……..

Commanders 12, Bears 7
:
— Bears had ball on 6-yard line in last minute, couldn’t score.
— Bears outgained Washington 392-214.
— Washington’s one TD came on a 6-yard drive after a muffed punt.
— Commanders scored total of 47 points in last four games.
— NFC East teams are 10-5 ATS in non-division games.

— Chicago had ball in red zone three times, scored zero points.
— Bears have been outscored 84-39 in first half this season.
— 2nd-year QB Fields is 4-12 as an NFL starter.
— Last 3+ years, Chicago is 10-17-1 ATS coming off a loss.

Astros 4, Mariners 2
Alvarez hit an opposite field, 2-run homer in 6th inning to give Astros the lead for good.
Astros bullpen got 10 outs, allowed only one hit.
Series heads to Seattle, with Houston leading 2-0

— Prop betting is interesting; was watching this game with a buddy. In top of 8th inning, with game 3-2, my friend got 2-1 odds that another run would be scored the rest of the game. He won the bet when Seattle walked Yordan Alvarez intentionally in the bottom of the 8th, and Alex Bregman dunked a single to right field to score an insurance run for the Astros.

Man on first, two out and Alvarez at the plate; you walk him intentionally? With Bregman up next? I said it when it happened, Alvarez ain’t Barry Bonds; that’s the last time I saw something like that happen, when Arizona walked Bonds with the bases loaded in the 9th inning.

Central Florida 70, Temple 13
This game was 14-13 with 6:00 left in first half.
UCF outgained Temple, 737-293- they converted 8-9 on third down.
Knights averaged 15.5 yards/pass attempt
Temple lost 70-13 and didn’t turn the ball over at all.

West Virginia 43, Baylor 40
WVU kicked a 22-yard FG with 0:33 left for the win.
Baylor led 24-17 at halftime.
West Virginia was 7-13 on 3rd down, Baylor 4-11
Baylor threw for 491 yards, turned ball over three times (minus-2)

— Damn it poured here in Albany tonight; driving home from dinner, could hardly see. Been a long time since I’ve seen it rain that hard for an extended time.

— Cleveland-New York game was rained out Thursday, will be played at 1pm Friday; teams haven’t played since Tuesday.

— Austin Riley plays 3B for the Braves; he was a QB and an all-state punter in high school. His dad was a punter for Mississippi State back in the 80’s, and was in training camp with the Detroit Lions a couple times.

After Riley’s sophomore year in high school, his football coach told him he had to decide between the two sports; football team didn’t want him missing summer drills to play baseball, if he was going to be the quarterback. He chose baseball, but still punted for the football team.

Looks like he made the right decision.

— From 2018-21, when NFL games had a total of 49+ points, over hit 58.2% of the time, but so far this season, in games with a total of 49+ points, under is 9-3.

— New England Patriots lost five of their last six road games SU.

Patriots visit Cleveland Sunday; Browns’ three losses this season are by 1-3-2 points.

— Under is 5-0 in Indianapolis Colt games this season; both of the Colts’ wins are by 3 points. Last three games, Indianapolis outscored opponents 26-6 in the second half.

— Arizona Cardinals have been outscored 80-26 in first half this season; they’ve trailed all five games at halftime.

— Colorado State point guard Isaiah Stevens broke his foot, needed an operation and is out for the start of the season. Rams hope to get him back by the start of conference play.

— Penn State has a basketball player Michael Henn; Nittany Lions are the fifth team he’ll play for in seven college seasons:
2017— Cal-Davis
2019— Cal Baptist
2021— Portland
2022— Denver
2023— Penn State
Young man should write a book someday.

— 2018 NBA Draft, the first three picks:
Phoenix- Deandre Ayton
Sacramento- Marvin Bagley
Dallas- Luka Doncic

This is why some teams always lose; passing on Doncic was a huge blunder. Michael Jordan was the third pick in his draft, too.
