*******************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Michigan State 37, Michigan 33:
— Walker ran for 191 yards, five TD’s; his 23-yard TD run with 5:08 left won the game.
— Michigan led 30-14 with 5:00 left in third quarter.
— Wolverines outgained State, 552-395- they had a 93-yard TD pass.

12) Houston 44, SMU 37:
— SMU tied game on a 45-yard FG with 0:30 left.
— Houston ran the ensuing kickoff back 100 yards for game-winning TD.
— Mustangs lose their first game; both teams are now 7-1.
— Houston QB Tune threw for 412 yards, four TD’s.
— Only 2nd time in last 15 years there was a game-winning kick return in last minute of a game.

11) Clemson 30, Florida State 20
— Early nominee for Bad Beat of the Decade. Seminoles (+9.5) have ball at end of game on their own 33, down 24-20. They throw a pass and start to lateral all over the field, but they go in the wrong direction, and Clemson runs an errant lateral into the end zone to cover the spread by half a point with the clock at 0:00.

If you laid 9.5 with Clemson, Happy Halloween.

10) Baylor 31, Texas 24:
— Baylor is 7-1; can they keep their coach from bolting?
— Texas led 21-10 with 5:00 left in third quarter.
— Longhorns are 4-4, not what they had in mind when they fired their coach LY.

9) Miami 38, Pittsburgh 34:
— Miami had TD plays of 20-57-40 yards in first quarter.
— Pitt QB Pickett threw for 519 yards in a losing cause.
— Panthers had 107 penalty yards, turned ball over twice.

8) West Virginia 38, Iowa State 31:
— Mountaineers outscored ISU 14-0 in 4th quarter.
— Cyclones had TD plays of 70-68 yards in first quarter.
— WVU had two receivers with 100+ receiving yards.
— Iowa State is 5-3, a disappointing team.

7) Upsets of the Week:
— Washington State (+16.5) 34, Arizona State 21
— Bowling Green (+13) 56, Buffalo 44
— Navy (+11) 20, Tulsa 17
— Miami (+9.5) 38, Pitt 34
— West Virginia (+7.5) 38, Iowa State 31
— Purdue (+7.5) 28, Nebraska 23

6) Georgia 34, Florida 7:
— Game was 3-0 near end of first half, then Florida’s offense imploded.
— Georgia scored three TD’s in 2:09 span late in first half to break game open.
— Dawgs’ first two TD drives were 11-36 yards; they also had a pick-6.
— Both teams turned ball over three times.

5) Wake Forest 45, Duke 7
— If Dave Clawson is still Wake’s coach next season, some athletic directors need to lose their jobs. This guy should have a better job. Demon Deacons are 8-0 for the first time ever; they’re the smallest school in country in a Power 5 conference.

4) Cincinnati 31, Tulane 12
— When the first poll comes out for the national playoff, will be interesting where the Bearcats land. They beat Notre Dame in South Bend, after all.

3) North Texas 30, Rice 24 OT:
— Owls tied game on 12-yard TD pass with 0:16 left.
— Rice outgained North Texas, 366-289, but had 109 penalty yards.
— Rice converted all four of their 4th down plays.

2) Old Dominion 23, Louisiana Tech 20:
— Monarchs kicked two FG’s in last 1:52.
— Nick Rice kicked 46-yarder at 0:00 for the win.
— ODU had a 100-yard kick return in first half.

1) Ohio State 33, Penn State 24:— Serious question; if James Franklin bolts Happy Valley for either LSU or USC, what %age of Penn State fans will be upset?

— Penn State lost last three games, by 3-2-9 points.
— Buckeyes outgained PSU 466-394.
— Nittany Lions converted 11-16 third down plays.

Tuesday’s 6-pack:

College football conference trends:
AAC— Home teams are 17-6 ATS
Big 14— Road teams are 21-13 ATS
Big X— Favorites are 16-9 ATS
C-USA— Favorites are 18-10 ATS
MAC— Home favorites of more than 7 points are 0-8 ATS
Sun Belt— Home teams are 17-6 ATS

Quote of the Day
“We’re in the season now. We’ll do recruiting after the season – when it gets to recruiting time we can talk about recruiting.”
Florida football coach Dan Mullen

Tuesday’s quiz
Which two coaches won a Super Bowl coaching the Chiefs?

Monday’s quiz
Bud Grant coached the Vikings for 18 years; he played 96 games for the Minneapolis Lakers (1949-51), scooting 2.6 ppg.

Sunday’s quiz
Dusty Baker was managing the Giants in 2002, last time he managed in a World Series.

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..plus NHL trends

13) Kansas City 20, NY Giants 17:
— Chiefs kicked 34-yard FG with 1:07 left for winning score.
— Giants have been outscored 61-12 in last 2:00 of each half.
— Giants are 23-8 ATS last 31 games as a road underdog.
— penalties: Giants 10-88, Chiefs 12-103

— Chiefs are 0-4 ATS at home this season.
— KC has only two TD’s on its last 18 drives.
— Chiefs turned ball over 19 times in last seven games (-13)
— KC has 29 plays of 20+ yards, their opponents have 38.

12) What have you done for me lately?

TCU fires Gary Patterson? Why? Patterson is the winningest coach in TCU history (181-79), one of the greatest defensive minds of the modern era, creating a defense that was effective at shutting down air raid-type offenses that are so popular now.

“We’re with you win or tie, but we’re not that crazy about ties”

Thats basically how these programs act; Texas/Oklahoma are bolting for the SEC, so schools like TCU, Texas Tech will slide down the national ladder- they’re desperate for attention so they can recruit the better players in talent-rich Texas. Players win games, no doubt about that.

Would enjoy hearing Patterson as a TV analyst; am guessing he has a lot to say.

11) Four teams in AFC South have played 20 non-divisional games this season; they’ve been the underdog in 18 of those 20 games.

10) Jets QB Mike White threw for 405 yards, three TD’s in his first NFL start Sunday; he is the first QB since 1950 to throw for 400+ yards, 3+ TD’s in his first NFL start. Is the Jets QB of the future White or Zach Wilson? Jets could rake in some draft capital by trading the other one, and there are teams who desperately need a quarterback moving forward.

9) With 4:30 left Saturday night., Ole Miss is trailing Auburn 31-20; they have 4th down around the Auburn 18 or 20 yard line. They’re down 11 points, they need two scores. Kick the FG.

But Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin doesn’t think the way most people think; he goes for the first down and eventual TD, instead of the easy FG- they don’t get the first down, and the game was essentially over right there and then.

8) Ole Miss plays Liberty this week; visiting Flames are 7-2, led by former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, who went 42-26 in five years coaching the Rebels, winning the 2015 Sugar Bowl.

Freeze wound up quitting at Ole Miss because he used his school-issued cellphone to call escort services. Lesson of the Day, kids: if you’re going to call an escort service, use your own phone, not the one your employer is paying for.

7) NFL updates:
— Titans RB Derrick Henry (foot) is out 6-10 weeks.
— Saints QB Jameis Winston tore his ACL, is out for the year.
— Rams traded 2nd/3rd round picks to Denver, for LB Von Miller.

6) 27-year old WR Cyril Grayson caught a TD pass for Tampa Bay Sunday; he never played college football, he was a track sprinter at LSU. Grayson has bounced around NFL practice squads the last four years; he caught 8 TD passes as a senior in high school— Sunday was his first touchdown since then.

5) Cooper Rush was the winning QB for Dallas in Minnesota Sunday night; he is making $920,000 this year to be the Cowboys’ backup QB. Kirk Cousins is making $31M from the Vikings this season.

4) 68 teams have been up 3-2 in a World Series; those teams are 45-23 in those series.

3) Alabama has been one of the dominant teams in college football for a while now, but Sunday was Nick Saban’s 70th birthday; good luck to the athletic director who has to pick the coach who takes Saban’s place- that will likely happen sooner than later. Schools will start using Saban’s age against him in recruiting; similar thing happened to Bear Bryant back in the day.

He is such an excellent coach; the guy who replaces him has huge shoes to fill.

2) Late Saturday night, BYU beat Virginia 66-49; game ended at 1:55am here in the East. Cavaliers led this game 42-38 at halftime.

Virginia QB Armstrong, who has thrown for 3,557 yards, 27 TD’s this year, left this game late with an apparent rib injury. Cavaliers have this week off, host Notre Dame November 13.

1) RIP to former big league 2B Jerry Remy, who passed away this week at age 68. Remy had cancer for several years; he hit .275 in a 10-year playing career for Angels/Red Sox.

After his playing days, Remy gained notoriety as a TV analyst on Red Sox games; the team of Remy and play-by-play guy Don Orsillo was television gold- they were so great together, lot of laughter and good natured banter. RIP, sir.

Wednesday’s 6-pack:
Interesting college football spreads this week:
— Wake Forest @ North Carolina (-2)
— Liberty @ Ole Miss (-9.5)
— Baylor (-6.5) @ TCU
— USC @ Arizona State (-8)
— Mississippi State @ Arkansas (-5)
— SMU (-5.5) @ Memphis

Quote of the Day
“My mother always used to say: ‘The older you get, the better you get, unless you’re a banana.’”
Betty White

Wednesday’s quiz
Hank Stram won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs; which team did he coach after he left Kansas City?

Tuesday’s quiz
Hank Stram, Andy Reid are the two coaches won a Super Bowl coaching the Chiefs.

Monday’s quiz
Bud Grant coached the Vikings for 18 years; he played 96 games for the Minneapolis Lakers (1949-51), scooting 2.6 ppg.

********************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….plus NBA trends

13) Two separate questions, not necessarily the same answer.

— Who is the best QB in NFL history?
— Which QB in NFL history has accomplished the most?

— Undoubtedly, Tom Brady has accomplished the most of any QB ever; seven Super Bowl titles, 600+ TD passes, you know the drill. His resume is indeed the best ever.
— But if they had a draft of every NFL player ever, with every player in his prime (real football, not fantasy football) who would you take first? Brady? Elway? Marino? Montana? Joe Pisarcik?

Lot easier to play QB now; they can’t get hit very much. Guys long time ago got pummeled by defenders, which is why careers were shorter. It is an interesting debate, for sure.

Myself, Elway would be my pick in that draft.

12) College football loses me a little with how they choose their playoff system with a poll; there is no way on God’s green earth that Cincinnati is the #6 team in the country, but money talks, so Alabama is #2, even with a loss. Oregon is #4, with a loss

11) Knicks played Toronto Tuesday nite, a commemoration of the NBA’s first-ever game 75 years ago. Knicks beat the Toronto Huskies 68-66 that night.

Back when I actually had a job, I worked for the Division of Criminal Justice for NY State; at one point, we had a deputy commissioner named Paul Schectman. Never met the guy, but saw him around the building— he is a lawyer in New York City now.

Turns out that his dad, Ossie Schectman, played in that New York-Toronto game, the first game in NBA history; he scored 11 points for the Knicks.

I remember someone telling me that way back when; I was skeptical, but it is true, Must be cool to be a part of history like that.

10) Russell Wilson had the pin removed from his injured finger, hopes to play next week, when the Seahawks visit Lambeau Field. Wilson played his senior year of college at Wisconsin.

9) Los Angeles Rams haven’t had a first-round draft pick since 2016; they don’t have another one until 2024- they trade draft picks to acquire proven, veteran players.

Rams only have four selections for the 2022 Draft, though they’ll pick up compensatory picks when guys like Von Miller move on in free agency. Interesting plan; they’ve had four winning seasons in a row, going on five, so it is working.

Used to know a guy who mocked me because I love to watch the draft; not sure why he cared what I did, but for some reason it bugged him. NFL is a multi-billion dollar business, and there are many different ways to approach it. Guess that is why it is so interesting to me.

8) Atlanta Hawks/Washington Wizards combined to go 45-45 on the foul lime the other night, only third time that has happened, with both teams taking 10+ shots, and making them all.

Shooting is in vogue in the NBA now, thanks in large part to the Curry/Thompson Warriors, and that is a good thing.

7) Circa Casino in Las Vegas has a survivor pool; pick one team a week, as long as they win, you stay in— think you can only pick the same team once a year.

There are 1,188 people left in the Circa pool; 871 people bit the dust when the Bengals lost in New Jersey Sunday. Lot of money at stake, interesting contest.

6) San Diego Padres starting playing baseball in 1969; Bob Melvin will be their 22nd manager. During that same time, Pittsburgh Steelers have had three head coaches.

5) At one point in 2007, Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles, Brian Hoyer were all QB’s at Michigan State; 14 years later, all three of them are still in the NFL. Foles wound up transferring to Arizona; hard to believe he didn’t get traded this week. He is better than some QB’s who are starting.

4) In a perfect world, the NFL would have no taunting penalties. None. Ever. Just run the play clock as soon as each play ends; if guys show off too much and their team gets a delay of game penalty, their coach will take care of it.

3) Minnesota Gophers are 6-2 this season, winning their last four games since they lost 14-10 at home to Bowling Green, as a 30-point favorite. Minnesota ran ball for 634 yards in their last two games. Good coaching job by PJ Fleck, keeping his team on track after such a hideous loss.

2) Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach went off on a tangent about Halloween candy last week (he doesn’t like candy corn); it led to an extended debate about everyone’s likes/dislike about candy, which was great. Good natured banter; we agreed to disagree.

Healthy debate without the hate; we need more of that in our world.

1) Braves 7, Astros 0:
— Atlanta win its first World Series since 1995.
— Fried threw six shutout innings.
— Soler, Swanson, Freeman homered for the Braves.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
Interesting NFL spreads this week:
— Browns @ Bengals (-2.5)
— Raiders (-3) @ Giants
— Falcons @ Saints (-6)
— Chargers (-1.5) @ Eagles
— Cardinals (-1) @ 49ers
— Bears @ Steelers (-6.5)

Quote of the Day
“If you don’t recruit, there’s no coach out there that can out-coach recruiting. The best coach to ever play the game better be a good recruiter, because no coaching is going to out-coach players.”
Georgia football coach Kirby Smart

Thursday’s quiz
Who has the most assists in NBA history?

Wednesday’s quiz
Hank Stram won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs; he later coached the New Orleans Saints after he left Kansas City.

Tuesday’s quiz
Hank Stram, Andy Reid are the two coaches won a Super Bowl coaching the Chiefs.

*********************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Aaron Rodgers tested positive for COVID, is out for this week’s game with the Chiefs. Rodgers didn’t get vaccinated; he took some alternative kind of medicine this summer, but the NFL didn’t accept that medicine as good enough, so he is considered unvaccinated.

Game was pick ‘em Tuesday; now Chiefs are an 8-point favorite, as 2nd-year QB Jordan Love will make his first NFL start for Green Bay.

Since 2008, Packers are 6-11-1 ATS when Rodgers hasn’t been their quarterback.

12) Oklahoma State’s basketball team was originally declared ineligible for the 2020 postseason; they appealed the ban for two years, which allowed them to play in the NCAA’s for the brief Cade Cunningham era- the NCAA denied their appeal, so OSU is out of NCAA’s for this season.

11) 8-0 Wake Forest is the first team since 1993 to be 8-0 or better, and be an underdog to a team that doesn’t have a winning record. Demon Deacons are +2.5 this week at 4-4 North Carolina.

In 1993, 9-0 Auburn (+1.5) won 42-28 at 4-5 Georgia.

10) MAC-tion started this week; five weeknight football games that give the MAC needed TV exposure on Tuesday/Wednesday, with almost no competition on TV, except for some NBA/NHL stuff.

Eastern Michigan 52, Toledo 49:
— Eagles win as a 9-point underdog.
— Toledo gained 672 yards, ran kick back for a TD and still lost.
— Rockets turned ball over three times (minus-2)

Ball State 31, Akron 25:
— Cardinals ran for 240 yards, but almost blew a 28-10 lead.
— 2-7 Akron starts five freshmen on the offensive line; unusual.

Ohio U 35, Miami 33:
— Bobcats won as a 7-point underdog- they led 28-0 early in 3rd quarter.
— Miami outgained Ohio 569-413.
— This was Ohio’s 4th game decided by 3 or fewer points.

Kent State 52, Northern Illinois 47:
— Lombardi threw for 532 yards, and his team lost.
— Cooper ran for 173 yards and two TD’s for Kent.
— Total yardage: Kent 682, NIU 663

Central Michigan 42, Western Michigan 30:
— Chippewas scored three TD’s in last 5:03 of first half.
— Central Michigan was +3 in turnovers.
— Western Michigan was 9-18 on 3rd down, CMU 3-11.

9) Houston Texans are a terrible football team; they’ve lost seven games in a row, they’re really bad, but they had hope to get better, if they traded QB Deshaun Watson for a bunch of draft picks. If you nail your draft picks, your team can improve very quickly.

The trade deadline was Tuesday; Watson is still in Houston, in limbo and the Texans are still horrendous, and without a decent QB.

Other teams are queasy about giving up a boatload of draft picks to acquire a QB who may or may not wind up in prison; there are 22 lawsuits against Watson, who is making $39M a year while he shows up at practice, but never plays in games.

Earlier Houston can trade Watson now is next March 16.

8) Jorge Soler was traded from the Royals to Atlanta on July 30, for a Class A pitcher.
— Soler hit .192 in 94 games for the Royals TY; he hit .228 last year.
— Soler hit .269 in 55 games for Atlanta, and then wins the World Series MVP.

Go figure.

7) Detroit Tigers acquired C Tucker Barnhart from Cincinnati, for IF prospect Nick Quintana. Barnhart is a good defensive catcher who had a .693 OPS the last three seasons, playing home games at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.

6) Nikola Jokic has played 213:00 this season; Denver Nuggets are +80 in those 213:00.

In 123:00 where Jokic was sitting out, Nuggets are minus-62.

That would make Jokic the early leader for MVP, yes?

5) December 19-22 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas is the G-League Winter Showcase, with 30+ games played on two courts over four days. Lot of very good basketball played by guys who are busting their butts to make the NBA. Excellent entertainment.

4) Clay Helton started this season as USC’s football coach; he got fired after USC’s second game, because parts of college football are insane. Now Helton already has another job, head coach at Georgia Southern. Interesting turn of events.

Someone on Twitter this week described Helton as “…..the nicest man in college football” We’ll assume that is true and wish Helton well with the Eagles.

3) Bryan Snitker never played big league baseball, he got his first MLB managing job at age 60; pretty cool to see him win a World Series this week. Unusual that his son is a coach for Houston, unusual that the Braves were 55-58 at one point this season, but rallied to win the World Series.

2) NFL notes:
— Over their four games, Cleveland Browns were outscored 74-36 in second half.
— Over their four games, Miami was outscored 29-0 in last 2:00 of each half.

1) Good idea for a new baseball rule: once you take your starting pitcher out, the DH for that team also goes away. Would encourage teams to keep their starting pitcher in game longer.
