Leonard scores 35; Raptors beat T'Wolves
October 24, 2018
By The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry just shrugged and grinned as he kept lighting up the floor, scoring 51 points and finishing with 11 3-pointers in only three quarters of the Golden State Warriors' 144-122 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Kevin Durant added 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Draymond Green had 11 of his 12 assists in the first half to help two-time defending champions finish with 37 after dishing out 35 assists in a 20-point victory against Phoenix on Monday.

But this was all Curry's show. No. 30 knocked down his 11th 3 of the night late in the third from 32 feet back and shrugged like no big deal whatsoever.

He scored 31 in the first half and finished with his sixth career 50-point game and made 10 or more 3s for the 10th time. The 51 points matched his most at Oracle Arena.

Bradley Beal bruised his sternum early then returned late in the first half and wound up with 23 points. Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 17 points off the bench for Washington.

JAZZ 100, ROCKETS 89

HOUSTON (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 38 points to lead the Utah over Houston in a game James Harden left with tightness in his left hamstring.

Harden headed to the locker room midway through the third quarter and didn't return. He missed seven games last season with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and said this was not the same type of injury as that one.

With Harden out of the game after the Rockets pulled within five, the Jazz regained control, scoring the next 10 points to make it 94-79 and cruise to the victory.

Harden scored 29 points and Carmelo Anthony had a season-high 22 for the Rockets. Chris Paul finished up a two-game suspension for his role in a fight with the Lakers last week, and fellow starter James Ennis sat out with a strained right hamstring.

LAKERS 131, SUNS 113

PHOENIX (AP) - Short-handed Los Angeles gave LeBron James his first victory as a Laker with the romp over Phoenix.

James flirted with what would have been his 74th career triple-double, finishing with 19 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds before sitting out the fourth quarter. Lance Stephenson had 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and JaVale McGee added 20 points.

The Suns' Devin Booker had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists but left in the third quarter with a strained left hamstring. No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton had 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Los Angeles was without Rajon Rondo and Brandon Ingram for their roles in an altercation with the Houston Rockets on Saturday night. Wednesday night was the first of a three-game suspension for Rondo and a four-game suspension for Ingram.

RAPTORS 112, TIMBERWOLVES 105

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard scored a season-high 35 points, Kyle Lowry had 13 points and 10 assists, and Toronto beat Minnesota to improve to 5-0 and match the best start in franchise history.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 16 points, Serge Ibaka had 15 and Norman Powell added a season-high 10. The Raptors also won five straight to start the 2015-16 season.

Toronto won its 15th straight home game against Minnesota, extending its franchise record for consecutive home victories over a single opponent.

Jimmy Butler scored 23 points for Minnesota.

NETS 102, CAVALIERS 86

CLEVELAND (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 18 points, Joe Harris added 16 and Brooklyn beat Cleveland, keeping the Cavaliers winless this season.

Trying to move on without LeBron James, the Cavaliers are 0-4 for the first time since losing their first five games in 2003-04 when James was a rookie.

Brooklyn outscored Cleveland 38-17 in the third quarter, forcing Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue to use four timeouts in the period. Kevin Love, Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton had 14 points for Cleveland.

HAWKS 111, MAVERICKS 104

ATLANTA (AP) - Kent Bazemore scored 32 points, including a thunderous slam with just over a minute to go, and Atlanta overcame a 26-point deficit to stun Dallas.

Trae Toung added 17 points on a tough shooting night, bouncing back in the fourth quarter to help the youthful Hawks complete their comeback in a rookie showdown with Luca Doncic of the Mavericks.

Doncic finished with 21 points, but hit only 3 of 10 shots over the final two quarters.

The Hawks made it a night to remember at newly rechristened State Farm Arena, which hosted its first game after a $192.5 million renovation that was largely completed over the last two offseasons.

BUCKS 123, 76ERS 108

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple-double with 32 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Milwaukee past Philadelphia.

The Bucks improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Khris Middleton had 25 points, and Brook Lopez added 21. Joel Embiid scored 30 points for Philadelphia.

HEAT 110, KNICKS 87

MIAMI (AP) - Hassan Whiteside had 22 points and 14 rebounds, Josh Richardson added 21 points and Miami rolled past New York with a 45-point third quarter.

Rodney McGruder added 19 points on only eight shot attempts, and Goran Dragic had 13 points. Miami outscored New York 76-38 in the middle two quarters. Damyean Dotson led New York with 20 points.

BULLS 112, HORNETS 110

CHICAGO (AP) - Zach LaVine made two free throws with 0.5 seconds left to give Chicago its first victory of the season.

LaVine finished with 32 points for his fourth straight 30-point game to start the season. Cameron Payne scored all of his career-high 21 points in the second half, going 7 for 11 on 3 pointers for Chicago in the opener of the home-and-home set with the Hornets.

Kemba Walker had 23 points on 5-for-14 shooting for Charlotte.

PACERS 116, SPURS 96

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Victor Oladipo had 21 points and Indiana led for all but the opening seconds.

Indiana led by 29 points at one point while handing San Antonio its first home loss.

DeMar DeRozan had 18 points to lead the Spurs, his lowest total since joining the team in an offseason trade from Toronto.

KINGS 97, GRIZZLIES 92

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - De'Aaron Fox scored 21 points including a leaning, one-handed dunk as part of a pivotal run late in the fourth quarter, and Sacramento beat Memphis.

Buddy Hield had 23 points, Willie Cauley-Stein added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Nemanja Bjelica had 11 points and 11 boards for the Kings.

Mike Conley scored 27 points while Jaren Jackson had 14 points and seven rebounds for Memphis. Wayne Selden added 13 points.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Interesting trends for Week 8 in the NFL:

— Steelers are 1-5 in last six games as a divisional home favorite.

— Eagles are 2-7-1 in last ten games as a favorite.

— Saints covered five of their last six games.

— Bengals covered six of their last nine games.

— Colts covered their last five pre-bye games.

— Jaguars are 4-19 in last 23 games vs NFC teams.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

13) Cam Newton’s Sunday in Philadelphia:
Quarters 1-3: 9-of-17, 68 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, not much of anything
4th quarter: 16-22, 201 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs— He looked like Dan Fouts

Once he got hot, the Panthers were unstoppable, but it was like someone flipped the on-switch and he started playing better.

12) Denver Broncos released backup QB Chad Kelly after he was arrested on trespassing charges Monday night. He was forcibly removed from the players’ Halloween party before he entered another person’s home where he didn’t belong.

11) There are whispers coming out of Ohio that at this time next year, Urban Meyer could be coaching the Cleveland Browns. We’ll see about that; not sure how Meyer would do dealing with the losing NFL coaches do, much more than college coaches.

10) College basketball starts November 6; on Opening Night, 52 D-I teams play a non-D-I opponent, which is embarrassing. Last year, D-I teams went 453-11 against non-D-I teams.

9) Darius Bazley is a young man who signed to play basketball at Syracuse this winter, but he won’t do that or play in the G-League, instead he is going to train on his own— he has signed an endorsement contract with New Balance, which will play him at least $1M.

Bazley will also intern at the company’s marketing, digital, footwear and apparel departments from January to March. Chances are he will go from April 2018 to July 2019 without playing in a competitive basketball game. Not sure how that is a good idea for his development as a player, but good luck to him.

8) Raiders supposedly turned down a 2nd round pick from the Eagles for Amari Cooper, before dealing him to the Cowboys Monday; Jon Gruden talked to the team Wednesday about the trade, but that seems kind of late, no? The trade was Monday.

7) Los Angeles Angels hired former Tiger skipper Brad Ausmus as their next manager.

6) This is just the third World Series where all four starting pitchers in Games 1-2 were lefty:

1963 – Koufax vs Ford, Podres vs Downing
1973 – Matlack vs Holtzman, Koosman vs Blue
2018 – Kershaw vs Sale, Ryu vs Price

5) James Harden left Houston’s 100-89 loss in Utah Wednesday with a hamstring issue that he says “isn’t serious). Harden missed seven games LY with a similar injury.

4) Nets 102, Cavaliers 86— Cleveland coach Tyrone Lue coached in the NBA Finals the last two years, but the Cavs are 0-4 already and Lue might get fired before Christmas. Losing to the Nets by 16 at home isn’t a good sign.

3) Red Sox 4, Dodgers 2— None of LA’s top four home run hitters have started a game in this WS yet, because they’re all lefty and God forbid a lefty hitter face a lefty pitcher.

2) Rams signed WR Austin Proehl to the practice squad, which sounds like an obscure note, except if you’re a Ram fan, the Phoehl name is royalty— Austin’s dad Ricky Proehl caught the game-winning TD pass in the 2000 NFC title game the year the Rams won the Super Bowl, and he also caught a TD pass in the Super Bowl two years later.

1) According to Psychology Living magazine, being sarcastic on a regular basis can add up to three years to your life, which means you’re stuck with me for three more years than you thought you were. Sarcasm is extremely healthy for the mind. Ha!!!

Inside the Paint - Thursday
October 25, 2018
By Chris David

The 2018 NBA regular season is nine days old and bettors are certainly watching a different game with less dunks and a ridiculous amount of 3-pointers. Through yesterday’s action, 20 of the 30 teams are averaging 30-plus attempts from 3-point land compared to just 10 last season. The number of fouls being called is up as well, from 19.9 to 23.1 per team a game and that certainly has helped the scoring boost.

The oddsmakers have done a nice job of adjusting their totals and we’ve already started to see the numbers balance out. The ‘over’ was hitting at a 69 percent (27-12) clip through last Sunday but the ‘under’ has posted a 13-10 mark the last three days and that includes a 7-4 record to the low side on Wednesday.

Even though favorites have gone 42-20 straight up this season, underdogs have gone 32-30 against the spread.

Thursday’s card has four games on tap, including a nationally televised double-header on TNT.

Cleveland (0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS) at Detroit (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS)

The post-LeBron James era in Cleveland hasn’t started out well as the Cavaliers have lost their first four games of the season. The latest setback occurred last night as the Cavs dropped a 102-86 decision to the Nets as three-point home favorites.

Cleveland will now be playing on no rest Thursday and the oddsmakers have the club listed as a seven-point road underdog at Detroit. Most books have pushed the number to Pistons (-8) as of Thursday morning. While the Cavs are winless, the Pistons have started with a perfect 3-0 mark but the three victories came by a combined six points.

On Tuesday, Detroit captured a 133-132 overtime win over Philadelphia as a one-point underdog. Blake Griffin led the pace for the Pistons with 50 points, which included a game-wining layup and free throw. While the number on the Pistons might seem a tad inflated, they’ve won seven straight games (5-2 ATS) when listed as home favorites going back to last season.

Cleveland went 3-1 both SU and ATS against Detroit last season but those numbers were with LeBron and should definitely be taken lightly.

Portland (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) at Orlando (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS)

After beginning the season with a 2-1 record at the Moda Center, the Trail Blazers (-3) begin a four-game road trip as favorites against Orlando on Thursday. Portland was a solid bet in this role last season, going 12-5 SU and 10-7 ATS when laying points on the road. Total bettors should note that the ‘under’ went 13-4 in those games.

Orlando will enter this game with confidence after upsetting Boston 93-90 on Monday as an 11-point road underdog. Including this game, the Magic have been listed as an underdog in every matchup this season and they haven’t been able to win back-to-back games yet. Through four games, the defense has carried them in the wins (96.5 PPG) but has been missing in the losses (118 PPG).

The Trail Blazers swept the Magic last season and that included a 95-88 win as a 4 ½-point road favorite last December in Orlando. The ‘under’ has cashed in five of the last six encounters between the pair.

I’ve often identified Portland as a bully team and its 25-7 record against teams below .500 certainly helps that status. The Blazers went 18-12 last season versus the East and that includes an 8-7 record on the road. Meanwhile, Orlando was 10-20 vs. the West but seven of the wins came at home.

Boston (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) at Oklahoma City (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS)

Oddsmakers sent out winless Oklahoma City as a 1 ½-point road favorite and I thought that line was a tad confusing. The number is now Boston -1 at most betting shops as of this morning.

The Celtics owned the third best road record (28-13 ATS) in the league last season but they haven’t looked like the same team, despite being healthy this season. Boston was stunned by Orlando 93-90 on Monday as an 11-point home favorite. The offense (99.8 PPG) is ranked last in the league and they can’t buy a shot from 3-point land (31.2%). Fortunately for coach Brad Stevens, the defense is ranked first (98.5 PPG).

The Thunder were run out of their own building on Sunday as they dropped a 131-120 decision to the Kings as an 11-point home favorite. Russell Westbrook made his debut for OKC and he put up solid numbers (32 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists) but he did miss six free throws. Similar to Boston, the Thunder have struggled from distance as well and the team is ranked last in shooting (23.9%).

Boston got the better of OKC last season, winning and covering both meetings. The ‘under’ went 2-0 as the Celtics held the Thunder to 99 and 94 points.

The total on this game opened 209 and was pushed up to 212 ½, which is the lowest number on the board. The Celtics (3-1) and Thunder (2-1) have both leaned to the ‘under’ so far.

Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m. ET and TNT will provide national coverage.

Denver (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) at L.A. Lakers (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS)

The Nuggets just missed out on the playoffs last season but they’re showing everybody that they should be in the mix again next April. Denver remains unbeaten through four games on the hardwood and at the betting counter.

Monday’s wire-to-wire 126-112 win over Sacramento helped the club sweep their three-game homestand. While beating the Kings and Suns was expected, a 100-98 victory over the Warriors last Sunday from the Pepsi Center was very impressive.

Oddsmakers opened Denver as a 3 ½-point road favorite over Los Angeles, who will be looking to win its first home game of the season on Thursday. The Lakers earned their first win of the season last night with a 131-113 victory over the Suns as 5 ½-point road favorites. The ‘over’ connected and the high side is a perfect 4-0 for the Purple and Gold.

It’s still early in the season but Denver is currently ranked second in scoring defense (99.8 PPG) and that’s helped the ‘under’ go 3-1. While the Nuggets have been strong defensively, the Lakers enter this game with the worst defense (127 PPG) in the league.

Tonight’s total is hovering between 237 and 238 points. One factor that could have you leaning low is the 3-point shooting percentages for the Lakers (30.2%) and Nuggets (29.8%), ranked 27th and 28th respectively.

Denver has only played one road game, which occurred at Thursday’s venue. The club defeated the Clippers 107-98 on opening night as 2 ½-point road favorites. The Lakers have gone 0-2 at the Staples Center, dropping decisions to the Rockets and Spurs.

Different faces on these squads but the recent meetings have watched the ‘over’ cash in eight of the last 10 encounters and the home team has won and covered the last six matchups.

Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo remain ‘out’ for the Lakers due to serving suspensions.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET

Lillard nets 41 points, Blazers beat Magic
October 25, 2018
By The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Jayson Tatum scored 24 points, and the Boston Celtics rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to beat the winless Oklahoma City Thunder 101-95 on Thursday night.

Marcus Morris added 21 points, Al Horford had 19 and Kyrie Irving 15.

Paul George scored 22 points for Oklahoma City, but shot just 7 of 22. Russell Westbrook had 13 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists, but he shot 5 for 20. The Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers are the only winless teams in the NBA.

Morris hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left to give the Celtics a 98-95 lead, and they held on.

Oklahoma City led 50-34 at halftime. Boston shot just 32 percent in the first half and missed all 11 of its 3-point attempts.

TRAIL BLAZERS 128, MAGIC 114

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 34 of his 41 points in the second half to help Portland beat Orlando.

CJ McCollum added 22 points, and Jusuf Nurkic had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Nikola Vucevic led Orlando with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Terrence Ross had 21 points.

Lillard and McCollum re-entered the game with 7:54 left after Orlando cut a 13-point deficit to three at 102-99 on Gordon's second 3-pointer of the quarter. The guards combined to score 22 of Portland's final 26 points to seal the win. Lillard had 19 points in the third quarter.

PISTONS 110, CAVALIERS 103

DETROIT (AP) - Andre Drummond had 26 points and 22 rebounds, and Detroit improved to 4-0 and dropped Cleveland to 0-6 for the first time since 2003-04 - when LeBron James was a rookie.

Blake Griffin scored 26 points in his first game since a 50-point night against Philadelphia on Tuesday. Reggie Jackson added 16 points.

Kyle Korver led Cleveland with 21 points. Kevin Love missed the game because of a sore left foot.

Friday’s six-pack

College football trends for Week 8:

— Washington State is 15-5 in last 20 games as a road underdog.

— Home side covered 7 of last 10 Wisconsin-Northwestern games.

— Pitt is 8-15-1 vs spread in its last 24 home games.

— Kansas covered once in its last six games as a home underdog.

— New Mexico covered only two of last nine conference games.

— North Carolina covered six of its last eight games vs Virginia.

Tweet of the Day
“I was playing my job of man, so I didn’t really know what was going on. But, shoot, I’ve seen a replay and it was obviously a false start. We’ve been having a lot of things like that this whole entire year, so we’ve grown accustomed to it. I don’t think that made or broke this game, but at the end of the day we’ve just got to overcome any type of adversity, because it seems like don’t nobody want to see us succeed.”
Browns’ safety Damarious Randall, after officials missed an obvious false start against the Chargers Sunday- LA scored a TD on that play. The official who missed it was fired this week.

Friday’s quiz
Where did Brock Osweiler play his college football?

Thursday’s quiz
Long time ago, the Sacramento Kings were based in Cincinnati, and called the Royals; they moved to Kansas City, became the Kings, then later moved to Sacramento.

Wednesday’s quiz
Ben Simmons played his one year of college basketball at LSU.

Friday’s List of 13: Random facts on a fall Friday

13) Thru seven weeks, NFL teams are 35-59 (59.3%) on 2-point conversions.

12) Kerryon Johnson ran for 158 yards Sunday for the Lions, the best day for a Detroit RB in seven years; Lions drafted Johnson with a pick they got from New England on draft day- the pick was originally the 49ers’ pick, but San Francisco traded that pick to New England in the Jimmy Garoppolo deal.

Funny how the Patriots trading Garoppolo wound up benefitting Detroit.

11) Ravens have allowed only one TD on the opening drive of a half this year, and that came on a 6-yard drive by Denver after a blocked punt. In their last four games, Baltimore has forced three turnovers on their opponents’ first drive of the game.

10) Last year, the Eagles converted 51.4% of 3rd down plays in the red zone, which was the 3rd best %age in the NFL. This year they are at 21.1%, ranking second-last in the NFL.

9) Dallas traded for WR Omari Cooper because their offense needs a jolt; in their seven games this season, Cowboys have gone 3/out on their first drive five times. Maybe Cooper can make their offense more explosive, allow them to get off to better starts.

8) In Buffalo Bills’ last four games: they were outscored 56-7 in first half. Bills had the ball 42 times in those games; they scored two TD’s, turned ball over 12 times.

7) Atlanta Falcons converted 32 of their last 55 third down plays.

6) 54 teams have led a World Series 2-0; 43 of them went on to win that World Series.

5) Best ppp in red zone this season:
Seattle 5.73 (15 drives), Baltimore 5.65 (26 drives), Kansas City 5.61 (33 drives)

4) Best ppp on drives that started 75+ yards from end zone:
Kansas City 3.05, New Orleans 2.86, Atlanta 2.72

3) Thru first nine days of the NBA season, home favorites were 24-20 vs spread, home underdogs 14-5.

Teams playing 2nd consecutive night are 9-5 vs spread; 3-3 when favored, 6-2 as dogs. 10 of those 14 games went over the total.

2) Cleveland Browns have played four OT games already this season; only one of their seven games was decided by more than four points. How many games does Hue Jackson have to win to keep his job?

NFL teams with a +2 or better turnover margin are 36-3-1 this season; Cleveland is 1-1-1, and everyone else is 35-2.

1) Since 2012, Denver Broncos have drafted five quarterbacks; none of those five guys is still on the Broncos.

Game of the Night - L.A. Clippers at Houston (-3/218.5), Prime Ticket, 8:05 ET

The Rockets will get Chris Paul back in the lineup after losing both games without him in the mix after being suspended for his part in Saturday night’s fight with Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo. His return coincides with the first of at least two games without backcourt mate James Harden, who will miss this game with a hamstring strain that is expected to sideline him into next week.

Mike D’Antoni will now look to help his team avoid a third straight home loss against a Clippers team they’ve already lost to, having dropped Sunday’s game at Staples 115-112. Paul sat the game out after being suspended that afternoon, so Harden took over at the point and finished with 31 points and 14 assists, scoring nine straight down the stretch to key the Rockets’ ultimately futile comeback effort.

Eric Gordon started next to Harden and will presumably get the call next to Paul tonight, but the dilemma facing D’Antoni is whether to start Carmelo Anthony, disrupting the much-debated original plan to bring him in off the bench. James Ennis III is also dealing with a hamstring injury that has him out of the starting five, so there’s a vacancy up front next to P.J. Tucker and Clint Capela that must be filled by Anthony, Michael Carter-Williams or Gerald Green.

No matter what D’Antoni decides, what’s at stake is potentially falling to 1-4 on the young season. It’s obviously very early, but considering how little room for error there is in the Western Conference, piling up losses at any point in the season carries major risk. The Rockets owned the NBA’s top home record last season (34-7) and never lost three games at the Toyota Center in the same month. That hasn’t happened since Feb. 2017. Houston hasn’t dropped three straight home games since Nov. 2015.

The Clippers are looking to bounce back from Tuesday night’s loss in New Orleans on the first leg of this two-game trip that is part of a tough stretch where they play five of six away from Staples, almost exclusively against playoff teams. It’s a tough early test for a roster that lacks star power but is loaded with depth and guards who cite defense as their calling card. Paul will have to deal with the player he replaced, Patrick Beverley, in addition to Avery Bradley and 6-foot-7 long-limbed rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose work on Harden made a huge impact in Sunday’s win.

L.A. ended up favored in that game due to Paul’s absence and has actually won four of six in this series, which has turned personal given the former Clippers’ point guard noisy exit where he essentially forced himself out. Doc Rivers won’t need to twist Beverley’s arm too hard to get the team’s bulldog to set a physical tone against his former team. He missed out on every meeting last year after knee microfracture surgery, so this will be his first contest in Houston, where he played from ’13-’17. He’s always revved up, so it will be fascinating to see if his energy level can rise up further as he takes the floor against Paul, who you can count on trying to use his aggressiveness against him. Beverley will have to be wary of the new freedom of movement initiative to ensure he doesn’t land in early foul trouble.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute has been playing a significant role for Rivers as the first forward off the bench behind Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari, L.A.’s top two scorers. He’ll likely get plenty of work against the small forward who is replacing him in D’Antoni’s rotation. Although Carter-Williams started in Wednesday’s loss to Utah, Anthony played a season-high 39 minutes and was more impressive than he’s looked since the early in his OKC stint, scoring 22 points. Even if D’Antoni’s decision is to bring him off the bench again, count on Melo playing starters’ minutes with some heavy usage in tandem with Paul.

L.A. has scored an average of 120.3 points in its four most recent wins against the Rockets and was held to a clip of just 94.0 in last season’s two losses, shooting 11-for-41 from 3-point range in those games. This will be the lone meeting in Houston this season as these teams don’t get together again until meeting inside Staples Center on April 3.

The card

Chicago at Charlotte (-10/226), 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Bulls knew they would be young this season but still harbored hopes that Zach LaVine’s return to the lineup and the drafting of Wendell Carter would generate quality depth, especially once Lauri Markkanen got healthy. In the Eastern Conference, that might be enough to land in the top eight, but Chicago’s hopes are being sabotaged by misfortune before this group ever really got started.

Point guard Kris Dunn was away from the team for the birth of his son, then returned and sprained an MCL. As if that was contagious, forward Bobby Portis suffered the same injury and will similarly miss 4-to-6 weeks. On the bright side, Carter and newcomer Jabari Parker will get more touches and probably get more comfortable, but Fred Hoiberg will now be fighting an uphill battle in terms of quality depth. Cameron Payne will continue to start at the point, but newly signed Shaquille Harrison should get a look sooner than later.

Charlotte threw away an opportunity to at least go to OT in Wednesday’s 112-110 loss at United Center when LaVine managed to knock the inbounds pass off intended recipient Kemba Walker. The short turnaround ensures the Hornets will want revenge for a tough loss, but LaVine scored 32 points and got wherever he wanted, so new Charlotte head coach James Borrego will have to come up with a better plan to stop him. Borrego’s desire to play fast has resulted in his team averaging 112.2 points per game over the first five. Chicago is averaging 111.3 but surrendering 117.5.

Dallas at Toronto (-11.5/225.5), 7:35 p.m. ET:
The Mavericks learned a painful lesson on Wednesday night, blowing a 26-point lead on national television in playing victim in Atlanta’s home opener. Wes Matthews threw up some awful shots down the stretch and rookie Luka Doncic also got a look at what can happen if he’s not more assertive since Dallas is already his team since he’s its best player. Harrison Barnes will make his regular-season debut after overcoming a hamstring injury and gives Rick Carlisle another option to play through. Dennis Smith, Jr. has taken well to Doncic’s arrival taking some of the ball-handling responsibilities off his workload, but he too made some careless decisions in the collapse against the Hawks. J.J. Barea has a hamstring issue to be concerned about that may keep him sidelined here.

Dallas gets its only look at old nemesis Kawhi Leonard in his new habitat, making its lone stop in Toronto. Leonard has played so well in helping the Raptors match a franchise-best start that no one can question whether he’s 100 percent. The former Finals MVP scored 35 points on 15-for-23 shooting in Wednesday’s win over the Timberwolves and is averaging 28.0 points per game. Kyle Lowry has been sharp next to his new tag-team partner, while the bench mob looks as fierce as ever. Fred VanVleet (toe) will play and run the second unit, but Delon Wright (groin) is back to being out of the mix after a brief return.

Golden State (-12/226.5) at New York, 7:35 p.m. ET, NBATV:
Stephen Curry scored 51 points in three quarters on Wednesday against Washington and loves putting on a show at Madison Square Garden, where he once scored 54 points and knocked down 11 3-pointers like he did the other night. That big game came in 2013 in his only loss as a pro in the building and he hasn’t shot better than 50 percent since, so we’ll see how he fares in this one. Kevin Durant is another one to watch since there’s a billboard out there begging him to come to New York via free agency next season. Expect fans to continue recruiting efforts tonight, which the current Knicks may not appreciate.

Since crushing the Hawks in the season opener, New York has dropped four straight and lost promising rookie Kevin Knox for weeks due to an ankle sprain, so there’s not a lot to get excited about outside of this Warriors’ visit. Tim Hardaway, Jr. has started fast and hungry young kids like Dameyan Dotson and Allonzo Trier are looking to run with the opportunity David Fizdale is giving them due to injuries to Knox, Courtney Lee (neck) and Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle). Mudiay and Lance Thomas (knee) are listed as questionable.

Brooklyn at New Orleans (-9.5/235), 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Pelicans bring their robust scoring average of 132 points per game into tonight’s date with the Nets, but must be wary of not looking ahead to Saturday night’s game against Utah. It might be tempting for Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and a few others to try and pace themselves to ensure they’ve got enough in the tank for the season’s first back-to-back, especially since it’s one of two New Orleans will have this week as they play at Golden State and Portland next Wednesday and Thursday.

Brooklyn is talented enough to take advantage if overlooked, having gotten Rondae Hollis-Jefferson back in the mix to place another solid defender into the rotation. Guards D’Angelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert have all had some nice moments to help fuel a 2-2 start. The last three meetings between the Nets and Pelicans have produced an average of 254.7 points, including a 138-128 double-overtime result in Brooklyn in the most recent meeting in February. Anthony Davis scored 44 points but should get more resistance here since Nets center Jarrett Allen has made great strides and veteran Ed Davis came on board.

Milwaukee (-1.5/233.5) at Minnesota, 8:05 p.m. ET:
Andrew Wiggins is a game-time decision with a quad injury that forced him out of only the second game up in Toronto, ruining the Canadian’s annual homecoming game. The Timberwolves managed to cover despite another no-show from the slumping Karl-Anthony Towns, but it’s no surprise to see the Bucks favored at Target Center given the form both teams have displayed to date. It’s obvious that Towns has been greatly affected by his drama with Jimmy Butler, whose status for this one is another variable worth watching. The Rockets are said to be ramping up its pursuit of the standout wing, a Houston native. It seems inevitable that he’s moved, but that hasn’t stopped him from playing a prominent role through his first four games, averaging 24.8 points per game. His duties here will be to try and help against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, the highest-scoring combination in the Eastern Conference (52.8 ppg).

Only Golden State’s Curry and Durant (62.0 ppg) and New Orleans’ Davis and Nikola Mirotic (58.3) average more points per game than the Bucks’ wings, who have led the team to a perfect start through four games. After a 113-112 win in the opener in Charlotte where Milwaukee nearly blew a huge lead, three double-digit victories have followed against the Pacers, Knicks and 76ers. All those games were at home in the new downtown arena, where the Bucks will return tomorrow to host the Magic before an excellent early matchup against the Raptors on Monday. Mike Budenholzer’s team has taken to his offense and desired up-tempo style beautifully but must prove that they can do it consistently on the road. The Bucks have lost their last two games in Minneapolis, last winning in 2016.

Washington (-5/235.5) at Sacramento, 10:05 p.m. ET, NBATV:
The Kings are looking for their first winning streak of the season after rallying to take down Memphis for their first home win on Wednesday. After surrendering 129.5 points over their first four games, Sacramento clamped down and took to Memphis’ slower pace well. De’Aaron Fox’s on-ball defense is a weapon, but we’ll see if he can disrupt the stronger, more physical John Wall here. Bradley Beal left the loss to Golden State due to a chest injury that affected his breathing, but he’s expected to play in this one after scoring 23 points in just 19 minutes trying to keep up with Curry’s shooting show.

This is a huge game for the Wizards, who opened this five-game road trip with an upset in Portland before losing in Oakland and can secure a second victory before stops in L.A. (Clippers) and Memphis to help take some of the pressure off. Washington continues to work short-handed with Dwight Howard sidelined by a back injury and now may not have backup center Ian Mahinmi, whose back is also acting up. Scott Brooks may have no choice but to play small against a Kings team that employs a lot of length. The Wizards have really struggled giving up second-chance opportunities thus far but have won four straight in the series, winning the 2016-17 meetings in OT before sweeping last season’s contests by a combined margin of 45 points.

Kevin Durant scores 41 points, Warriors rout Knicks 128-100
October 26, 2018
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Kevin Durant scored 25 of his 41 points in Golden State's ruthless fourth-quarter clinic, and the Warriors beat the New York Knicks 128-100 on Friday night.

New York led by three after three quarters before Durant and the Warriors starting hitting from all over the floor, making 19 of 26 shots - and things went so well that on a rare long-range miss by Durant, the ball bounced all the way out behind the arc to a wide-open Stephen Curry, who made the 3-pointer.

Curry added 29 points and six 3-pointers, giving him at least five in every game this season. Durant was 17 of 24 from the floor, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc, and grabbed nine rebounds. Golden State outscored New York 47-16 in the fourth quarter.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 24 points for the Knicks. They have dropped five in a row after a season-opening victory over Atlanta.

CLIPPERS 133, ROCKETS 113

HOUSTON (AP) - Montrezl Harrell scored a career-high 30 points off the bench to help Los Angeles rout short-handed Houston.

It was the Clippers' second win this season over the Rockets, who played without James Harden due to a hamstring injury and dropped to 1-4. Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 24 points in his first start for the Rockets. Chris Paul had 12 points and eight assists against his former team in his return after serving a two-game suspension for his role in a fight with Lakers guard Rajon Rondo.

RAPTORS 116, MAVERICKS 107

TORONTO (AP) - Kyle Lowry had 20 points and 12 assists, Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points and Toronto set a franchise record with its sixth straight win to start the season.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 17 points, Danny Green had 15 and Serge Ibaka 11 as the Raptors eclipsed the 5-0 start they recorded in 2015-16.

DeAndre Jordan had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Dallas. Luka Doncic scored 22 points, and Wesley Matthews had 21.

PELICANS 117, NETS 115

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Jrue Holiday highlighted a 26-point performance with a pull-up jumper near the foul line with 2 seconds left, Anthony Davis stole Brooklyn's last-gasp inbound pass, and New Orleans remained unbeaten by scoring nine straight over the last 1:49.

Holiday's clutch jumper gave New Orleans a one-point lead, but Brooklyn's Ed Davis was assessed a technical foul shortly after and Holiday made a free throw before Anthony Davis leapt to tip Joe Harris' inbound pass to himself as time ran out.

D'Angelo Russell hit six 3-pointers on his way to a 24-point performance for Brooklyn, but he committed a pivotal turnover with 7 seconds left when his pass intended for Caris LeVert sailed out of bounds. New Orleans quickly inbounded the ball to Holiday, who dribbled toward the key for his decisive 17-foot pull-up.

BUCKS 125, TIMBERWOLVES 95

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 15 points and 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes and Milwaukee beat Minnesota to improve to 5-0 for the second time in franchise history.

The 1971-72 Bucks, led by Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson, started 7-0.

Ersan Ilyasova and Khris Middleton each added 16 points. Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 16 points for a listless Minnesota squad dealing with the distraction of star Jimmy Butler's trade request. Butler started despite being questionable with an illness and had a season-low four points on 2-of-11 shooting.

HORNETS 135, BULLS 106

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker had 30 points on five more 3-pointers, and Charlotte beat Chicago for its first home victory of the season.

Walker bounced back from a season-low 23-point outing against the Bulls, shooting 11 of 18 from the field. He also had seven assists and six rebounds. The two-time All-Star has four games with at least five 3-pointers and his 29 3s are second only to Golden State's Stephen Curry.

Tony Parker added 18 points and eight assists to help the Hornets avenge a two-point loss in Chicago on Wednesday night. Zach LaVine had 20 points on 6-of-16 shooting for the Bulls.

KINGS 116, WIZARDS 112

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 22 points and made three free throws over the final 20 seconds to send Sacramento past Washington.

Nemanja Bjelica matched his career high of six 3-pointers and had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Sacramento. Willie Cauley-Stein also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, while De'Aaron Fox added 17 points and nine assists.

The Wizards, who led by six going into the fourth quarter, committed three turnovers in the final 24 seconds.

John Wall scored 26 points with eight assists for the Wizards. Kelly Oubre had 22 points and nine rebounds, and Bradley Beal scored 21.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

— Dodgers 3, Red Sox 2— Max Muncy hit an opposite field homer in the 18th inning at 3:30am; Red Sox lead series, 2-1

— Boston College 27, Miami 14— BC Eagles improve their record to 6-2.

— Warriors 128, Knicks 100— Golden State outscored Knicks 47-16 in 4th quarter.

— Utah 41, UCLA 10— Bruins are now 2-6; this wasn’t a spunky effort by them.

— Louisiana Tech 21, FAU 13— Lane Kiffin’s Owls slip to 3-5 on the season.

— When the dome in Las Vegas is built, the Raiders will play on a grass field; UNLV will play its games on an artificial turf field.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

13) If you haven’t seen it, go on the Interweb and find DeAndre Hopkins’ great catch that was nullified by a penalty Thursday night. Pretty sure it was the best catch I’ve ever seen; if Hopkins played for a New York team, he’d be a lot better known that he is now— great hands.

12) Texans lost WR Will Fuller (torn ACL) for the season in Thursday’s game.

11) People complain (and rightfully so) about athletes’ salaries, but how about Megyn Kelly making $23M a year from NBC? Really? 23 freakin’ million a year? Now she gets paid $69M to go away; it must be nice.

Athletes have very short careers; a TV person can work until they’re a senior citizen.

10) Georgia Tech scored 49 points in a win at Virginia Tech Thursday and they didn’t complete a pass- Yellow Jackets were 0-1 thru the air.

9) I normally try to ignore individual baseball awards, but how the bleep is Trevor Story not a finalist for Gold Glove at shortstop in the NL?

Story is on my fantasy team, so I watch just about every Colorado game; he had a super year at the plate, but he is a damn good fielder, too. Huge oversight by whoever decides these things.

8) They’re charging $19.95 for the Woods-Mickelson golf event the day after Thanksgiving; I wouldn’t watch it if it was on free TV. Will be interesting to see how many people pay to watch.

7) Would be curious how Billy Donovan/Brad Stevens feel about coaching in the NBA. as opposed to college ball— I’m guessing they don’t miss recruiting, but the NBA is also more of a player’s game. Can do lot more teaching in college; many more practices.

6) There is ugliness in Denver; Broncos’ owner Pat Bowlen has Alzheimer’s and hasn’t run the team for a while. Now there will be a legal squabble over which one of Bowlen’s children will wind up in charge of the Broncos- there are three trustees running the team now.

Forbes values the Broncos’ worth as $2.65B; as usual, there will be lawyers.

5) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Atlanta Hawks owner Tony Ressler:

“For two years, I was a deer in the headlights. It’s like the story of a poker game when you’re looking around, and you wonder who the fish is. If you don’t know the answer, it’s probably you. I don’t want to blame somebody else because I was the schmuck, and I didn’t have to do it. I realized the mistake the minute after I did it.”

Ressler bought the Hawks in 2015;

4) Ressler is married to actress Jami Gertz, who was in the movie Less than Zero and the TV series Square Pegs. She represented the Hawks at the draft lottery last spring.

3) Mets’ search for a new general manager has apparently boiled down to two candidates: agent Brodie Van Wagenen and Rays executive Chaim Bloom. Working for the Wilpons took a lot of candidates out of the running- they’re not the best owners.

Former Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin was also in the running, but apparently isn’t now.

2) NFL fired an official this week, after that official missed an obvious false start in the Chargers-Browns game— Chargers scored a TD on that play.

Chargers’ left tackle started early; it wasn’t hard to see; the official on that sideline was fired, the first in-season firing of an NFL official in at least fifty years. Chances are he had other mistakes if he got fired; they wouldn’t axe the guy over one mistake.

1) Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm is a rising star in coaching with a 41-19 record at Western Kentucky, Purdue; his playing career didn’t go as smoothly.

Brohm led Louisville to 5-6/9-3 records his junior/senior seasons, after breaking his ankle as a sophomore; he later bounced around the NFL, throwing 37 passes for the 49ers in 1996-7.

Brohm also played in the XFL’s only season, playing seven games for Orlando before an injury ended that season. Brohm had earlier played two years of minor league baseball, hitting .214 in A ball for Cleveland Indians’ farm clubs- he was a head coach in the Arena League for a year, before beginning his college coaching career.

He could write a hell of a book someday.
