Game of the Night - New Orleans at Houston (-7.5/229), ESPN, 8:05 ET

These teams have met twice since DeMarcus Cousins tore his achilles in the closing seconds of a Pelicans’ win late last January, a moment that forever altered the future of New Orleans’ franchise. Losing the All-Star center they envisioned playing next to Anthony Davis into the next decade forced them to go out and acquire Nikola Mirotic, whose ability to spread the floor made for a more efficient brand of ball as Alvin Gentry got the team to play at the faster tempo he prefers, ultimately leading to a playoff berth.

Although they made a lukewarm offer to Cousins, the Pels were ready to move on when he passed on the deal and are excited about adding Julius Randle as a replacement in addition to keeping Mirotic in the fold. Rajon Rondo left for the Lakers, so Elfrid Payton was signed to try and fill the role next to Jrue Holiday so that Gentry always has playmakers on the floor looking to push and feed Davis, who has made no secret of his desire to emerge as MVP this season.

That type of push is possible, especially if the Pelicans can find a way to overcome the Southwest Divisions top team, a Rockets squad that has surpassed the Spurs as the team to beat in what’s been the NBA’s most loaded division over the past two decades. The Northwest is vying for that distinction now, but there’s still plenty of quality for New Orleans to overcome with the Spurs still a factor and the Mavericks and Grizzlies looking improved to start the season. Houston is the team to beat, however, and opens at home looking to bounce back from a demoralizing end to their championship pursuit last May. Had Chris Paul not blown a hamstring in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, the Rockets probably would’ve opened on Tuesday and hosted a “Ring Night.” Instead, they’ll tip off looking to see this season’s roster take shape given a number of tweaks.

Paul returns alongside reigning MVP James Harden and center Clint Capela, who just missed out on an All-Star spot but signed a five-year, $90 million extension nonetheless. Carmelo Anthony has come on board to serve as the team’s sixth man, making the transition after being unwilling to come off the bench in Oklahoma City, where he wore down over the course of last season, eroding into a liablity come playoffs. James Ennis III will start at small forward alongside holdovers P.J. Tucker and Capela up front, while the departure of standout defenders Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute require guys like Michael Carter-Williams and Marquese Chriss to step their games up off the bench. Shooter Brandon Knight is also on board, but will join Chriss and forward Zhou Qi in missing this game due to injury.

New Orleans is healthy, but lost three of four against Houston last season and hasn’t won a season series against its division rival since 2011. The Rockets have scored over 100 points against New Orleans in 13 straight, winning 10 of those matchups outright. Mike D’Antoni and Gentry are great friends who believe in getting up and down the floor, so it’s no surprise to see this total as high as it is, approaching 230. Despite their preference for playing at a fast pace, the ‘over’ was just 2-2 last season.

Memphis at Indiana(-6.5/207), 7:05 p.m. ET:
Mike Conley looked sharp this preseason after missing the first 70 games last season due to a torn Achilles, ending the Grizzlies’ realistic chances of contending before they really got started. Losing him so early ended up costing David Fizdale his job after he clashed with Marc Gasol amid all the losing, altering the direction of the franchise. J.B. Bickerstaff ended up being hired as head coach after an interim stint and gets Conley, Gasol and Chandler Parsons back at 100 percent, so there’s optimism that this group can return to playoff contention. No. 4 pick Jaren Jackson, Jr. struggled with foul trouble in exhibitions but only turned 19 last month and is likely to provide rollercoaster rides as he gets acclimated. Although Gasol and Conley can still be one of the top defenders at their positions when they’re right, the Griz no longer employ the “grit and grind” style that delivered results when those two were younger and they had Zach Randolph to play through in the post and Tony Allen to lock people up on the perimeter, so we’ll see how this group adapts over the long haul should everyone stay healthy.

Indiana won’t sneak up on anyone like it did last season when Victor Oladipo emerged as one of the top guards in the East. He’s got all major contributors back around him with the exception of Lance Stephenson. Tyreke Evans should provide an upgrade on the wing after choosing the Pacers among a number of suitors, while shooter Doug McDermott and center Kyle O’Quinn add quality depth to an already deep roster. Thaddeus Young put together 16 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes in the preseason tune-up after sitting out most of the last few weeks with a bruised right foot. His opting in to the final year of his contract rivals Evans’ acquisition as the most important move of the offseason. Cory Joseph (Canada) and Bojan Bogdanovic (Croatia) played for national teams this summer so they should be in shape to play key roles in Nate McMillan’s rotation. According to the Indianapolis Star’s J. Michael, the Pacers shot just 32.7 from 3-point range this preseason. Indiana has gone 56-26 at home over the last two seasons and have averaged 135 points in wins over its last two home openers. Myles Turner has played major roles in both wins. He signed an extension to open the week and will play despite an ankle tweak. Indiana swept Memphis last season. The Griz were just 6-35 on the road.

Milwaukee (-2/217) at Charlotte, 7:05 p.m. ET:
Former Spurs top assistants Mike Budenholzer and James Borrego debut as head coaches of their new teams. Budenholzer arrives after leaving Atlanta following a five-year run, while Borrego, who had an interim stint in the head seat with the Magic back in 2015, will be in the head seat for his first season opener. Both want to play with pace and will look to push whenever possible, placing movement without the ball and sharing it via the extra pass above all else. The Bucks averaged 124.8 points this preseason, an average aided by one overtime game but nonetheless impressive and indicative of the style Bud wants to employ. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee in scoring in all three games he played, averaging 24 points and 11.6 rebounds. He’ll be an MVP candidate this season and has a familiar supporting cast around him, welcoming in center Brook Lopez and forward Ersan Ilyasova to spread the floor. They’ve got John Henson shooting 3s too. We’ll see how that goes.

The Hornets likely need to get off to a good start to avoid being blown up, so it will be interesting to see how they attack this season. There’s an initiative to play Kemba Walker off the ball more, allowing young shooting guards Jeremy Lamb and Malik Monk more freedom. Borrego wants the ball to stick less and is hoping to see Walker thrive without being so ball-dominant. The Charlotte Observer's Rick Bonnell reported that Borrego instituted a 12-second shot clock at practices in an effort to play faster, resulting in the team averaging 118.3 points over their last three preseason games, all wins. The Hornets and Bucks played four times last season, but all games took place by Christmas. Khris Middleton averaged 30.5 points against Charlotte as the teams split 2-2, but with Dwight Howard gone and two new coaches in place, you can’t trust much from last season.

Miami (-2.5/210.5) at Orlando, 7:05 p.m. ET:
Florida’s franchises square off after dueling in the preseason nine days ago, playing a sloppy 90-89 game where both teams shot poorly, combining to shoot 30 percent from 3-point range (27-for-56) in Miami. We’ll see if the teams can find the range in Orlando as the Steve Clifford era tips off in Central Florida as the Heat and Magic open up against one another for the third straight year. The teams have split the last two meetings with the Orlando winning last October. Erik Spoelstra opens his 10th season at the helm in Miami and will be facing his sixth Magic head coach in that span, a familiar face who has coached in the Southeast Division for the past five years in Charlotte and was an assistant with Orlando from ’07-’12. Spoelstra’s Heat beat Clifford’s Hornets the first eight times the teams played and went 22-9 against them during his stint in Charlotte, which includes winning the last six.

The Heat have dangled key pieces in an effort to try and pry Jimmy Butler out of Minnesota, so there are few players on the roster who can feel safe outside of team legends Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem, each entering their final season with the franchise. Goran Dragic and Josh Richardson have each been a fixture in rumors and should make up the starting backcourt, while Orlando is expected to give D.J. Augustin first crack at point guard ahead of Jerian Grant. He and shooting guard Evan Fournier combined to shoot 3-for-18 (16.7%) in the Oct. 8 exhibition loss. Heat centers Hassan Whiteside and Bam Adebayo will look to make Orlando lottery pick Mo Bamba’s debut a forgettable one when he enters for Nikola Vucevic, who is likely to be moved by the trade deadline. The Heat and Magic split last season’s series after Orlando won three of four in 2016-17, the first season where they managed to win more than they lost against Miami since 2009. Forward James Johnson (hernia) and guard Dion Waiters (ankle) are rout, while wing Justise Winslow (hamstring) is doubtful to play. Dragic (knee) is a go.

Brooklyn at Detroit (-5/212), 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Pistons couldn’t pay off opening a new downtown arena with a playoff appearance despite making an in-season trade for Blake Griffin, so Stan Van Gundy was ultimately not retained. Although Michigan head coach John Beilein was a serious candidate, reigning Coach of the Year Dwane Casey was ultimately hired and gets back Reggie Jackson to run the point. Had he not missed 37 games due to an injured ankle last season, Van Gundy may have finished better than 39-43 and wouldn’t have lost his spot. It’s easy to forget that Detroit won 14 of its first 20 last season. Van Gundy made a soft landing at ESPN, while Casey, shown the door by Toronto after failing to get past LeBron James, makes the short trip across the border.

Andre Drummond had a productive preseason but shot just 6-for-21 against Brooklyn when the teams met in Detroit on Oct. 8. Jackson played just 16 minutes and shot 2-for-7 while Griffin scored 17 points in 21 minutes as both saw their first exhibition action, so don’t glean much from that result. D’Angelo Russell did score 25 points in the 110-108 OT win that also saw Caris LeVert flirt with a triple-double. His emergence is a key x-factor for Brooklyn, who hopes he’ll take a step forward alongside Russell. With Rondae Hollis-Jefferson out indefinitely with a hip ailment and Allen Crabbe nursing an ankle injury, the play of LeVert and a heavily bearded Joe Harris will be vital. Backup point guard Shabazz Napier is also likely sidelined. Detroit is healthier, listing only starting SF Stanley Johnson (sore toe) as a question mark. He should play.

Atlanta at New York (-3.5/215), 7:35 p.m. ET:
It wouldn’t be surprising to see these teams vying for the No. 1 pick come April, so it’s easy to joke that we could see some tanking early. All kidding aside, both Fizdale and Atlanta’s Lloyd Pierce would love to see their seasons get off to good starts as they begin their respective head-coaching tenures in this opener. Opportunities to win will be few and far between, so don’t expect to see the Knicks favored in too many games until Kristaps Porzingis makes his return after All-Star break, which isn’t necessarily set in stone. Tim Hardaway, Jr. will likely be tasked with being the primary scoring option until the Latvian star returns but comes into this one nursing an ankle injury. He led the team in scoring in New York’s last three preseason games from the wing, while center Enes Kanter and rookie Kevin Knox should also play major roles. Fizdale likes Emmanuel Mudiay’s length and views him as a backcourt fixture, but he will miss tonight’s game with an ankle injury. A neck issue has shooting guard Courtney Lee listed as doubtful, so Trey Burke, Frank Ntilikina and Ron Baker are likely in for extended runs. Lance Thomas will start alongside Knox and Kanter up front and is expected to serve in a glue-guy role.

The Hawks are hoping for big things out of second-year forward John Collins but aren’t going to throw him out there with an ankle that’s less than 100 percent, so he won’t play. Center Dewayne Dedmon (ankle) is also out, so look for former Phoenix lottery pick Alex Len and Miles Plumlee to play the bulk of the minutes inside. Len has extended his range out to the 3-point line and may play a larger role for Atlanta than most expect, but I’d also look for them to go small whenever possible. Rookie point guard Trae Young will get the keys from the jump and looks to get out and run alongside promising forward Taurean Prince and Collins once healthy. 41-year-old Vince Carter will start opposite Kent Bazemore on the wing.

Cleveland at Toronto (-12/214), 7:35 p.m. ET:
The post-LeBron James era begins with Cleveland as a double-digit underdog, a role that it hasn’t seen much of over the past few years but could become the norm. Pride figures to go a long way for the Cavs, especially at home, but they could be in a trouble spot here given where the league’s schedule-makers have them opening up. Toronto will have no mercy, especially since it lost six of seven meetings last season, getting swept out of the Eastern Conference semifinals to close out the Casey/DeMar DeRozan era. Point guard Kyle Lowry is among those most bitter about how things ended, but the majority of last year’s team returns intact and will be coached by Nick Nurse, a top assistant who will look to put his own spin on things while preserving continuity.

Kawhi Leonard will debut for the Raptors after being acquired in a package for DeRozan and impressed in the preseason, showing no signs of the injury that caused so much disharmony in San Antonio, ultimately ending his time there. Only guard Delon Wright (thigh) is listed as questionable for a Raptors roster that ranks right up there with the Celtics as the East’s deepest. The Cavs will build around Kevin Love, who was dealing with a sore foot but will play and be the focal point on the offensive end. Larry Nance, Jr. just got extended and will help Tristan Thompson in the paint, while last year’s midseason acquisitions, guards George Hill, Jordan Clarkson and wing Rodney Hood, will all look for increased touches to find more of a comfort zone with James gone. Hood shot poorly in the preseason and is nursing an ankle tweak but should play. Same goes for Nance, while J.R. Smith is doubtful with an elbow injury. Lottery pick Collin Sexton impressed throughout camp but will be tasked with making an impact off the bench to open his career since Ty Lue has decided on Hill as the starting point.

Minnesota at San Antonio (-3/210.5), 8:35 p.m. ET:
Neither Popovich nor Tom Thibodeau could’ve had much peace of mind as their head hit the pillow on Tuesday night, which is assuming they managed to sleep at all. It’s hard to imagine guys who are meticulous in their preparation and obsess over every detail can be comfortable with how their seasons are starting, but the moment of truth has arrived following tumultuous offseasons. The Spurs moved on from Leonard and long-time guards Tony Parker (departed via free agency), Manu Ginobili (retirement) and Danny Green (traded) while adding DeRozan and new starting center Jakob Poeltl. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of their roster turnover since promising point guard Dejounte Murray (ACL) and rookie wing Lonnie Walker IV (MCL) were lost for the season due to torn ligaments. Derrick White was slated to take over for Murray could potentially miss two months because of a heel injury. The cursed start will lead to shooter Bryn Forbes starting and veteran Patty Mills getting the bulk of the work off the bench for a roster whose depth used to be a major strength. Rudy Gay’s bout with a heel issue went better than White’s, so he’ll be starting next to LaMarcus Aldridge and Poeltl up front. Pau Gasol will come off the bench.

The Timberwolves will bring awkward to new levels since Jimmy Butler is expected to start next to teammates he blew up last week in an effort to get himself dealt out of town. Upset that Karl-Anthony Towns as given a lucrative extension despite flopping in the playoffs, Butler doesn’t feel owner Glen Taylor is invested in his future and will play for Thibodeau only as long as it takes to get his ticket out of town. Count on Butler giving his normal effort out on the floor, but it’s got to be concerning that there’s such little harmony among this group, potentially affecting chemistry. Butler didn’t accompany the Timberwolves to Milwaukee for their preseason finale, so it’s anyone’s guess how things will go in San Antonio, where at least Butler won’t have to hear boos like he probably would’ve in Minneapolis. It’s likely we’ll see Thibs open with the same starting five (Andrew Wiggins, Taj Gibson, Towns, Jeff Teague, Butler) that was utilized most of last season, including a Western Conference first-round series that featured the Wolves being blown out by 18 points or more in three of their contests against Houston.

Wednesday NBA Best Bet

Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Clippers

With the 2018 NBA season officially getting going last night with the national TV double-header, tonight's the night the bulk of the teams get to hit the floor for the first time this year. Wednesday brings us 11 games on the betting board to go through with some quality teams from a year ago like Toronto, Houston, and Memphis all part of the action. But it's a late game out West that's caught my eye as I'm not sure one team is getting the early betting respect they deserve.

BetDSI.eu Odds: Denver (-1.5) vs. L.A Clippers; Total set at 226

This line opened up as a pick'em and early support for Denver has brought the spread to it's current number. That initial support was something I was not surprised to see as the Nuggets were a quality team last year (46-36 SU) and are on their way up in building a contender. Compare that to a Clippers team who's in the latter stages of tearing down what was their core for the better part of this decade, and I think you've got tremendous value on the Nuggets on any spread up to -3.

The Clippers sat back and watched as the final piece of “Lob City” left town this summer with DeAndre Jordan finally moving on to play with his hometown Dallas Mavericks squad. That means that since the beginning of last year, L.A. has gotten rid of Jordan, Blake Griffin, and Chris Paul, the trio of guys that were hailed as the ones who would bring respectability back to the Clippers organization.

And make no mistake, for a few years, that trio made good on that goal thrust upon them, although “respectability” seemed to always end once the playoffs arrived as L.A. couldn't find any success in the second season.

So last year was the beginning of the end for that trio in L.A. and the Clippers have made no bones about the fact that they are looking to rebuild/reload their team here for these next couple of years, hopefully snagging a big name or two in free agency to speed up that process.

But now that LeBron's a local in L.A. and wearing those “other” colors, I think we see the Clippers go into full-blown tank mode very early in the 2018-19 season, bombing to get that young cornerstone piece (RJ Barrett maybe) that every NBA franchise in a rebuilding phase covets. That means that fading the Clippers early on this year is one way I'm looking to attack this first month of NBA action and it starts tonight with the Nuggets in town.

Just going up and down through the Clippers roster you'll see that this team should have trouble scoring at times. Lou Williams is going to be the go-to guy for this team offensively, as they hope rookie G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander develops quicker than anticipated and can help Williams with some of that offensive workload.

But with guys like Patrick Beverley, Avery Bradley, and Luc Mbah a Moute on the roster – all defensive specialists – the Clippers are going to be a team that rarely will be on the good side of their home TV announcer's “Lawler's Law” - getting to 100 points first – this year.

Compare that with this Nuggets team that's looking for some playoff basketball this season after making huge improvements a year ago. G Jamal Murray has been everything this Denver franchise hoped he would be, with with talented scorers like Will Barton and Gary Harris alongside Murray, this Denver team should keep their upwards trajectory in tact this season.

Having a great big man like Nikola Jokic never hurts either, and with rookie Michael Porter, Jr. and veteran Isaiah Thomas wearing Nuggets colors this year, that scoring touch the Nuggets have shouldn't lose much when it's mostly reserves out there.

Early on in any season you've got to make plays largely based on your pre-season projections of teams, and when you get a matchup between one team that's essentially a play-on team like Denver, up against an organization that's essentially a play-against team like L.A, you've got to fire.

Whether or not you agree with those assessments of each team is up to you, but the Nuggets were projected to be 10+ wins better than the Clippers this year – Denver's win total was 47.5 vs 36.5 for L.A. – and at a spread that's basically just asking you to pick the outright winner here, I'm going with the much better squad.

Knicks have 49-point 2nd quarter, beat Hawks 126-107
October 17, 2018
By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) DeMar DeRozan had 28 points in his San Antonio debut, LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and 19 rebounds and the Spurs overcame a 23-point performance by Minnesota's Jimmy Butler in a 112-108 victory Wednesday night in a matchup of teams coming off a tumultuous offseason.

DeRozan was acquired from Toronto after the Spurs responded to Kawhi Leonard's trade demands by dealing their star forward and Danny Green for the Raptors' All-Star guard and Jakob Poeltl.

Minnesota is facing a similar trade demand from Butler, who has opted to play through it. Butler, who has told Minnesota that he will not re-sign with the team in the offseason, added seven rebounds and three assists in an active 31 minutes.

DeRozan banked in the eventual winning shot in the final minute against Butler, driving hard to the basket against the 6-foot-8 forward and then pulling up from 12 feet to give San Antonio a 110-108 lead with 32.4 seconds remaining. DeRozan sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining after Minnesota's Derrick Rose missed a runner in lane.

Jeff Teague scored 27 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 20 points for the Timberwolves.

Rudy Gay had 18 points, and Bryn Forbes had 11 points in his first start at point guard for the Spurs.

KNICKS 126, HAWKS 107

NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 31 points, sparking the Knicks during their franchise-record, 49-point second quarter, and New York beat Atlanta in its first game under coach David Fizdale.

Hardaway had 16 points in the period, when the Knicks matched the Hawks' point total for the entire first half. New York led 72-49 at the break.

Trae Young finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, shooting 5 for 14 in his NBA debut. Taurean Prince scored 21 points for the Hawks, who were overwhelmed in their first game under Lloyd Pierce. Four other Knicks scored at least 15, while rookie Kevin Knox finished with 10 and was just 4 for 16.

Hardaway and the Knicks started slowly, as he had missed his first four shots and the Knicks started 0 for 9 when they took a timeout trailing 10-2. During that break, George Holmes of Northport, New York, nailed a halfcourt shot to win $10,000, and suddenly the New Yorkers couldn't miss.

PELICANS 131, ROCKETS 112

HOUSTON (AP) - Anthony Davis had 32 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists, and Nikola Mirotic scored 30 points to lead New Orleans past Houston.

Davis added three blocks and three steals, Mirotic was 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and Julius Randle had 25 points off the bench.

Eric Gordon led the Rockets with 21 points off the bench, and P.J. Tucker and Chris Paul each added 19 points. James Harden had 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

BUCKS 113, HORNETS 112

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 25 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, and Milwaukee spoiled Charlotte's celebration of 30 years of basketball.

Antetokounmpo made two free throws with 23.7 seconds remaining to put the Bucks ahead after the Hornets battled back from a 20-point deficit behind 41 points from Kemba Walker.

Walker missed a driving layup with 3.4 seconds left and the loose ball got kicked outside where Nic Batum misfired on a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.

Khris Middleton had 19 points and Eric Bledsoe added 17 as the Bucks.

Walker was 15 of 29 from the field, hitting seven 3-pointers.

PACERS 111, GRIZZLIES 83

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 19 points and Victor Oladipo added 16 to help Indiana rout Memphis in the largest-opening night victory margin in the franchise's NBA era.

Domantas Sabonis finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds as Indiana earned its seventh opening-night win eight years. The Pacers also have won eight of their last nine home openers.

Marc Gasol scored 13 points for Memphis.

RAPTORS 116, CAVALIERS 104

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard had 24 points and 12 rebounds in his Toronto debut, Kyle Lowry scored 27 points and the Raptors beat Cleveland.

Fred VanVleet scored 14 points, Pascal Siakam had 13 and Danny Green 11 to help the Raptors win their sixth straight season opener and give Nick Nurse a victory in his first game as head coach.

Kevin Love scored 21 points, and Cedi Osman had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

PISTONS 103, NETS 100

DETROIT (AP) - Andre Drummond had 24 points and 20 rebounds, and Detroit won its opener under new coach Dwane Casey.

Blake Griffin added 26 points for the Pistons, who were without two potential starters but still managed to hold off Brooklyn. Caris LeVert equaled a career high with 27 points for the Nets, and he drove to the basket in the final seconds with Brooklyn down one. LeVert lost the ball, and it went out of bounds to Detroit. Reggie Jackson made two free throws for the Pistons with 6.2 seconds remaining, and Joe Harris missed from near the top of the key at the other end.

MAGIC 104, HEAT 101

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Mohamed Bamba dunked twice and blocked a shot during Orlando's 9-0 run in the fourth quarter and the Magic held off Miami.

Aaron Gordon had 26 points and 16 rebounds for the Magic. They went without a field goal over the final 4 1/2 minutes. Goran Dragic led Miami with 26 points, and Josh Richardson had 21.

JAZZ 123, KINGS 117

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and Utah overcame an uneven performance on both ends of the floor to beat Sacramento in the season opener for both teams.

Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Joe Ingles scored 22 and Derrick Favors added 18 points and nine boards as the Jazz won their sixth straight against the Kings.

Utah trailed by 16 early in the first quarter, blew a 14-point lead in the third and then pulled away in the fourth.

Seven players scored in double figures for Utah.

Willie Cauley-Stein had 23 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento. De'Aaron Fox added 21 points and seven assists.

Marvin Bagley III, the second overall pick in this year's NBA draft, had six points and five rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench for the Kings.

SUNS 121, MAVERICKS 100

PHOENIX (AP) - Devin Booker scored 19 of his 35 points in the final 6:44 and lifted Phoenix over Dallas in the teams' season opener.

Booker, who missed the preseason after undergoing a surgical procedure on his right (shooting) hand, sank four 3s, converted a three-point play, made a driving layup and hit two free throws after Dallas had cut what had been a 16-point lead to four.

Two of the NBA's top rookies squared off in their debuts with different results.

Deandre Ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, made 8 of 11 shots for 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six assists. Dallas' Luka Doncic, the No. 3 overall pick, struggled from the field, making 5 of 16 shots - 0 of 5 3-pointers - for 10 points. He had four assists and eight rebounds.

Trevor Ariza added 21 points, Josh Jackson 18 and T.J. Warren 17 for the Suns, who gave Igor Kokoskov a victory in his NBA head coaching debut.

NUGGETS 107, CLIPPERS 98

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nikola Jokic scored 21 points, Gary Harris added 20 and the Nuggets opened the season with a victory.

Denver led for most of the game but was trailing 92-84 with 5:14 remaining after the Clippers went on an 11-3 run that was highlighted by a pair of Boban Marjanovic 3-point plays.

The Nuggets seized control with their own 11-2 spurt.

Will Barton added 19 points and Paul Millsap 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets, who struggled on the road last year, going 15-26.

Tobias Harris had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Boban Marjanovic added 18 points for the Clippers.

12) Wade Miley started Game 5 of the NLCS for Milwaukee, walked the leadoff hitter in bottom of first inning, and was taken out. Seriously. This is getting ridiculous, the level of over-managing that is going on with managers/front offices— it is starting to border on nonsense.

Miley is also going to start Game 6; how long he lasts then is open for debate.

11) Texans’ QB Deshaun Watson has been hit by defenders 70 times in six games; no other NFL quarterback has been hit more than 49 times this year.

According to Fox’s Jay Glazer, Watson suffered a cracked rib, a bruised lung, and a partially collapsed lung in the Texans’ game with Dallas two weeks ago.

10) Tampa Bay just fired their defensive coordinator, Mike Smith; Atlanta’s DC is Marquand Manuel, and he better be watching his back, too.

In the Falcons’ last four games, on the opponents’ first drive of the game, they’ve run 27 plays for 295 yards and four TD’s. Atlanta has some injuries on defense, but also seems like they may not be as well prepared as some of the other teams.

9) Jason Myers kicked seven field goals for the Jets Sunday in their 42-34 win over the Colts; the NFL record for most FG’s in a game is eight. Myers went to college at Marist in Poughkeepsie, which is D-I in basketball (Rik Smits’ alma mater) but not in football.

8) If you’re a Celtics’ fan, you’re rooting against Sacramento all season; Boston owns the Kings’ 2019 first-round pick thru the Tatum-Fultz deal. Rooting against the Kings is generally fun; imagine getting Tatum and Sacramento’s #1 pick in the same trade?

7) A guy in Las Vegas known as the “Duffel Bag bettor” wagered just over $100,000 on Army last weekend, when the Cadets were laying 15 points at San Jose State.

Now Army won 52-3, so the guy didn’t have to sweat for his $100K, but it takes onions to risk six figures on a service academy team laying double digits on the road.

6) Sports betting is up and running in New Mexico now; the political geniuses here in New York haven’t gotten around to it yet, but West Virginia, Mississippi and New Mexico have.

Brilliant!!!!

5) AAF is a new spring football league with eight teams that will play a 10-game schedule that begins February 9; games will be televised mostly on NBC Sports Network.

League has some big names coaching their teams: Mike Martz, Steve Spurrier, Dennis Erickson, Mike Singletary. It figures to develop into what the USFL used to be.

4) Jordany Valdespin, who played four years in the majors as a utility guy for the Mets/Marlins, recently pitched four scoreless innings of relief in a 19-inning Dominican Winter League game in which Mets’ 1B prospect Dominic Smith went 0-8, with a bases loaded walk.

3) UConn’s football team is giving up an average of 9.21 yards/play, worst in country; from what I can tell, UL-Monroe is next worst in country, giving up 7.18 yards/play.

2) Here is some good but scary news from the New York Post: No one got shot last weekend in New York City, the first time that has happened in at least 25 years.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan has been with the NYPD since 1982, and he said he can’t remember a weekend without SOMEONE getting shot.

Unfortunately, the city’s quiet streak ended Monday, when a man was shot at around 1:15pm on Aqueduct Avenue in the Bronx. Hopefully, he recovered.

1) Duke recruit Zion Williamson’s name has come up in the adidas/college hoop corruption trial, which puts Duke in a curious position. Blue Devils shouldn’t worry though; the NCAA doesn’t go after the blue blood teams.

Long time ago, then-UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian got under the NCAA’s skin when he famously wrote, “The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, they’re putting Western Kentucky on probation.”

45-50 years later I’ve amended Tark’s quote: “The NCAA is so mad at Duke, they’re going to put Duquesne on probation” No way the Blue Devils ever meet an NCAA investigator.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Thursday, October 18

Not a lot to go on for the first week or so, but I’ll give you the info I’ve got…….

Miami won seven of last nine games with Washington; Heat won three of last four visits here. Over is 6-3 in last nine series games. Visitors are 4-3 in last seven series games. Miami lost its opener last night, by 3 in Orlando; four Miami starters played 32:00+.

76ers won last two games with Chicago, after losing seven of previous eight series games; Bulls won three of last four visits here (under 3-0 in last three series games in Philly). Sixers lost their opener Tuesday by 18 in Boston.

Portland won its last ten games with the Lakers, who have Lebron James now, so lot of these trends will go down the drain. Lakers are 2-3 vs spread in losing their last five visits to Oregon. Under is 5-1 in last six series games. Figures to be an emotional evening, since Blazers’ owner Paul Allen passed away earlier in week.

Simmons has triple-double, 76ers beat Bulls 127-108
October 18, 2018
By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) LeBron James opened with two thunderous dunks and had 26 points and 12 rebounds in his first game with the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Portland Trail Blazers prevailed 128-119 Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

Damian Lillard had 28 points and Nik Stauskas came off the bench to score 24 for Portland, which won its 18th straight home opener to extend an NBA record.

It was the Blazers' 16th straight victory over the Lakers.

The opening festivities were tempered by the death this week of Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen. A ''Rip City'' baseball cap rested in Allen's courtside seat with a single rose.

The enigmatic co-founder of Microsoft died Monday in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 65. There was moment of silence before the game and tributes to Allen throughout the night.

On the court, the focus was all on James. His monster dunks to start stunned the Moda Center crowd while Nike co-founder Phil Knight looked on from courtside seats.

76ERS 127, BULLS 108

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Simmons had a triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists and Joel Embiid had 30 points and 12 rebounds in Philadelphia's victory over Chicago.

Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 30 points in their season opener.

The curious case of Markelle Fultz continued when one of the more scrutinized players in the NBA managed to steal the spotlight from his more accomplished teammate with simple jumpers.

Fultz had open looks early and 76ers fans exhorted him to ''Shoot! Shoot!'' each time he touched the ball as the second-year guard tries to overcome his aversion to jumpers.

He found the look he wanted 3 minutes into the second quarter. Fultz dribbled to the foul line and hit an uncontested pull-up jumper, the ball rattling around the rim four times before it plopped through the net for two points. Fans erupted in cheers as they gave him a standing ovation and chanted ''Fultz! Fultz! Fultz!'' Fultz was 1 of 6 in 15 minutes in the first half and didn't play again until late in the third and the Sixers leading by 88-68.

HEAT 113, WIZARDS 112

WASHINGTON (AP) - Kelly Olynyk's putback of Dwyane Wade's missed jumper produced the go-ahead basket with 0.2 seconds left, lifting Miami past Washington.

Josh Richardson led Miami with 28 points, Rodney McGruder added 20, and the Heat hit consecutive 3s late in the fourth quarter.

With Washington center Dwight Howard sidelined by a sore backside, the Wizards were led by old standby John Wall, who delivered 26 points and nine assists. He and fellow All-Star guard Bradley Beal, who scored 20 points, accounted for Washington's last eight points.

But with a 112-111 lead, Wall missed a 26-foot pull-up jumper, giving Miami a chance. Wade's shot with about 3 seconds left was off the mark, and Olynyk grabbed the rebound and his layup won it.

Game of the Night - Golden State (-2.5, 218) at Utah, ESPN, 10:35 ET

The Jazz were swept by Golden State in 2016-17’s first round, losing all four games by double-digits. They then watched Gordon Hayward walk away, leaving the franchise that developed him behind in order to join forces with his former college coach.

If not for Detroit passing on Donovan Mitchell to take shooter Luke Kennard with the No. 12 pick, Utah could be mired in mediocrity, preparing to face another season fighting an uphill battle in the loaded West.

Instead, Mitchell’s return following a brilliant rookie season makes the Jazz one of the primary threats to the Warriors’ plans of a three-peat that would give them four NBA titles in five years. Although he was edged out for Rookie of the Year honors by Philadelphia prodigy Ben Simmons, Mitchell’s brilliance down the stretch cemented a rise we saw come out of nowhere last November, when he overcame shooting 25 percent (13-for-52) over the first five games of his career and ended up averaging 20.5 points to lead all first-year players.

Utah couldn’t get past Houston in May’s conference semifinals, but Mitchell’s 28.5 points per game in the first round eliminated Russell Westbrook and Oklahoma City. Considering the Jazz beat Golden State in all three of their 2018 meetings and are the only team with a winning record against the Dubs over the past two seasons, they’re right to be confident entering their home opener.

Mitchell hit four of five 3-pointers the last time he ran into the Splash Brothers, breaking Damian Lillard’s NBA record for most makes from beyond the arc by a first-year player. Utah won 119-79, registering a 40-point blowout over a Warriors team that was resting Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala but had multiple All-Stars out there.

Center Rudy Gobert’s size is a major weapon against Golden State, but Steve Kerr’s counters had typically worked until Mitchell’s arrival. In fact, the last five games the Jazz played against the Warriors in 2017, four of which came in that aforementioned first-round playoffs series, all resulted in double-digit losses.

Utah didn’t play its trademark defense in Wednesday’s regular-season opener in Sacramento, prevailing despite giving up 117 points, which is sixth-most they’ve surrendered since Mitchell came on board. Golden State scored 126 points in the first meeting between the teams last season (Dec. 27, 2017) but was held under 100 in the next three. Although it’s too early in the season to call this a huge game, the fact the Warriors are well aware of how much trouble this team gave them in posting wins by 40, 30 and 19 points should ramp up the intensity from where we would ordinarily see it in a Game No. 2.

The Warriors handled Westbrook-less OKC on Wednesday but failed to cover a 13-point spread and fell behind in the third quarter despite being up 10 at the break. Golden State held the Thunder to just 37 percent shooting but went just 7-for-26 from 3-point range since Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant combined to make just one of their 13 attempts.

Damian Jones made his first start at center for the Dubs and Kevon Looney came up with 10 points and 11 boards off the bench in replacing JaVale McGee and Zaza Pachulia, so they held their own against Steven Adams. It’s going to be a different challenge to fare as well on the road against Gobert, who had 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting in Sacramento, adding 15 boards and three blocks in a team-high 37 minutes. His length is a challenge for for Draymond Green, who still isn’t in great shape after taking most of the summer off from basketball to heal a sore knee. He played just 32 minutes on Wednesday and isn’t likely to be himself for a few weeks. Head coach Steve Kerr has said he’d likely play in “shorter bursts.”

The Warriors are just a 2.5-point favorite here, which is interesting since it took until Game No. 47, a Jan. 20 visit to Houston, for them to be favored by less than a possession in 2017-18. Golden State was an underdog six times last season, mostly down the stretch as key players rested, but were only favored by 2.5 points or less twice last season. They lost at both the Rockets and Pacers in those contests. Utah was a home underdog six times last season and won four of those games outright, including a 129-99 rout of Golden State on Jan. 30.

The card

Charlotte (-2/218) at Orlando, 7:05 p.m. ET:
If you can’t beat him, hire him. That could be one way to look at the Magic opening the season with Steve Clifford at the helm since he quickly landed on his feet after being let go as Michael Jordan went a different direction. Charlotte carries an 11-game winning streak over Orlando into Amway Arena, posting all of the victories on Clifford’s watch. Kemba Walker will now look to terrorize his ex-coach after opening the season scoring 41 points in a 113-112 home loss to Milwaukee. Nicolas Batum had an opportunity to win it but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Hornets want to push whenever possible, while the Magic want to use their excellent length to become the Eastern Conference’s version of Utah. In that vein, 7-footer Mo Bamba had a fantastic debut off the bench in Wednesday’s win against the Heat, drilling a crucial 3-pointer and finishing with 13 points, seven boards and two blocks. He’s got a 7-foot-10 wingspan. Aaron Gordon led the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds and Orlando survived nearly squandering a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit in pulling off an upset of the Heat. The Magic started fast last season too and may be a live home ‘dog here if they can keep Walker from going off. Charlotte has won seven of eight in Central Florida.

New York at Brooklyn (-3.5/219), 7:35 p.m. ET:
New York’s teams cashed in their regular-season debuts. The Nets lost just 103-100 in Detroit when Joe Harris’ 3-pointer on their final possession misfired, but 21-year-old center Jarrett Allen’s block of a Blake Griffin dunk attempt was among Wednesday ‘s top highlights in a strong performance on the road. The Knicks scored a franchise-best 49 points in the second quarter and ran away from the Hawks in a duel of teams expected to vie for the NBA’s worst record. NYK rolled despite lottery pick Kevin Knox shooting just 4-for-16 off the bench and took the game over in Noah Vonleh’s 16 minutes of play that saw him grab 10 boards and shoot 5-for-5 from the field for a double-double no one could’ve seen coming.

The Knicks and Nets will be seeing each other for the third time this month since they squared off in a pair of preseason games, winning on the other’s home court in competitive games. D’Angelo Russell’s activity stood out, so New York will likely key in on being as disruptive as possible against the Brooklyn point guard as it seeks it fifth straight victory in the series following last season’s sweep that featured three double-digit wins. Kristaps Porzingis will be out for months, but the Knicks could get back versatile guards Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) and Courtney Lee (neck) after both missed the opener. They’re two of New York’s top defenders, so any total plays should wait on announcement addressing their availability. Brooklyn will have shooter Allen Crabbe (ankle) in the mix for the first time, while wing Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is expected to be a game-time decision.

Sacramento at New Orleans (-11/230.5), 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Pelicans posted the week’s most impressive victory, crushing Houston on its home floor. Anthony Davis went to work from the opening tip and really never gave the Rockets a shot, finishing with 32 points and 16 rebounds to wear out the Rockets’ defense. New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry stuck to his guns of playing bigs Nikola Mirotic, Julius Randle and Davis together, counting on their versatility to be as big a problem for opponents as their pick-and-roll defense will be for his sanity. Although there will likely be headaches ahead, Gentry has said he’s not going to go small whenever possible this season in an effort to make teams adjust to dealing with the size advantage his best guys enjoy.

Matching up won’t be a problem for the Kings, who covered against Utah thanks to an improved-looking backcourt of De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield. Willie Cauley-Stein anchored the bigs with 23 points despite squaring off against reigning Defensive Player of the Year Gobert, so the hope is that he’ll be able to continue a strong start in a contract year while proving he can be a consistent force for the first time in his career. The Kings are going to try and wear teams down by playing a lot of bodies and started shooters Nemanja Bjelica and Yogi Ferrell to help spread the floor, so expect plenty of track meets as they look to follow Fox’s lead and get out in transition. They’ll be better off when wing Bogdan Bogdanovic returns from a knee issue, but that isn’t expected to be until next month. These teams combined for 215 or more points in each of last year’s four meetings, splitting the series 2-2.

Boston at Toronto (-3/209), 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN:
After crushing the 76ers in their home opener, the Celtics will look to send a message to their other main nemesis in the East, reigning Atlantic Division champ Toronto. Boston will see how it matches up with Kawhi Leonard for the first time after the Cavs had few answers for him in Wednesday’s 116-104 Raptors’ win. Leonard finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds and was aggressive in attacking the paint and single coverage in an impressive debut. He’s looked like his old self for weeks now. Most important, Kyle Lowry shook off the disappointment of the Raps moving friend and tag-team partner DeMar DeRozan over his protests and poured in a team-best 27 points and eight assists in a 116-104 win over Cleveland. Toronto put its fantastic depth on display and may be at full strength since OG Anunoby (eye) will be fine to play and Delon Wright (thigh) may be available after being held out against the Cavs. Strength in numbers carried Boston past Philadelphia in resounding fashion despite Kyrie Irving (2-for-14) struggling with his shot. Jayson Tatum scored a game-high 23 points in the 105-87 rout that featured all nine Celtics who played at least 19 minutes scoring at least seven points. Only Al Horford failed to hit a 3-pointer, a sign that Boston is going to swing the ball to the open man and trust everyone is capable of hitting the outside shot, which includes big Aron Baynes and even Horford, who missed his lone attempt. Marcus Morris produced 16 points off the bench and was instrumental in helping the C’s pull away. These teams went 2-2 against one another last year but Toronto won a huge late-season game 96-78 and has won or split the regular-season series against Boston in each of the last five years.

Cleveland at Minnesota (-8.5/223.5), 8:05 p.m. ET:
Kevin Love will be back in his old stomping grounds, but being the face of a franchise again will take some getting used to. Playing next to LeBron James and Irving while winning a title required him to alter his game, but he’s one of the few holdovers from the team that won the title in ’16 and is being tasked with being the bridge between that era and whatever comes next. Love shot 5-for-18 up in Toronto and has been dealing with a sore foot, so Cleveland may be in for a rough start as it begins truly turning the page. Lottery pick Collin Sexton missed five of seven shots and committed a team-high four turnovers in just 17 minutes, so there are definitely some growing pains ahead.

If the Timberwolves can’t dispose of this group, it’s going to be hard to resist dealing Jimmy Butler in the coming week. At this point, Tom Thibodeau appears to be buying time since it appears inevitable that Butler will get his wish in getting out of town, having proven too disruptive to play with despite his best intentions on the floor. Karl-Anthony Towns hasn’t responded well to how Butler has challenged him to step his game up and fouled out in just 22 minutes in San Antonio, scoring eight points and grabbing nine boards. Towns will see plenty of suspect defenders Love and a slumping Tristan Thompson here, so it’s a must that he turns things around. Butler had four steals against the Spurs and was out there defending and trying to get guys involved, but the lack of chemistry from Minnesota’s group is pretty evident. We’ll see what reaction he gets in the Timberwolves’ home opener. Odds are he’ll be booed lustily while Love is cheered, which will make for an interesting dynamic early.
