NBA ATS Picks - Magic vs. Celtics

The Boston Celtics are favored at home on Monday night, as they host the Orlando Magic on NBA TV. The Magic come into this game at 1-2 and off a crushing 116-115 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, while the Celtics are 2-1 and coming off a 103-101 win at New York. The Celtics have owned the Magic when the games have been played in Boston, going 27-11-1 ATS in the last 39 meetings.

Let’s look at Monday’s game and NBA picks.

Orlando Magic vs. Boston Celtics
Date and Time: Monday, October 22, 2016, 7:30 p.m. ET
Location: TD Garden, Boston, MA
Opening NBA BetDSI Odds: Celtics -12, O/U 210.5
Magic vs. Celtics TV Coverage: NBA TV

This is not a great spot for Orlando, as they will be playing their third game in four days. The only good news is that the Magic did have Sunday off. Orlando is coming off a very tough loss on Saturday, as they had a chance to beat Philadelphia on the road but lost 116-115. Orlando got great games from Evan Fournier and Nikola Vucevic. Fornier had 31 points, while Vucevic, picked up his second career triple-double with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists.

Orlando head coach Steve Clifford said that his team made too many mistakes. ``We played better and should have won the game, but we made two huge – huge – defensive game plan mistakes late that we had defended the whole game. You can’t make those mistakes and win on the road against a good team.”

Vucevic said to the media that the team can’t be satisfied with just coming close. “We can be proud of the way that we fought, but we can’t be satisfied with that because the goal isn’t to play hard and have a close loss.”

The Celtics got a tough win on Saturday against the Knicks at MSG, as Jayson Tatum scored 24 points including the game winner. Tatum did end up fouling Tre Burke on a three-pointer, but Burke missed his first free throw and the Celtics got the rebound on his third try that was intentionally missed. The Celtics gave Gordon Hayward the night off against the Knicks, but he is expected to be in the lineup on Monday.

Matchup to Watch

Keep an eye on the matchup in the backcourt. The Magic simply have to win with Evan Fournier and D.J. Augustin going against Jaylen Brown and Kyrie Irving because Orlando is not going to win down low. The Celtics have Tatum, Hayward and Horford down low, so the Magic have to win the matchup of the guards.

Key Stats

The Magic are 11-27-1 ATS in the last 39 meetings in Boston. The Magic are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss. The Magic are 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 road games. The Magic are 8-18-1 ATS in their last 27 vs. the Atlantic. The Celtics are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games. The Celtics are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Southeast.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-1 in Orlando’s last 5 overall. The Under is 10-3 in Orlando’s last 13 games playing with one day of rest. The Under is 8-3 in Orlando’s last 11 road games. The Under is 5-0 in the Celtics last 5 home games.

Magic vs. Celtics Free Picks

The Magic might be okay early in this game, but I think as the game progresses they could struggle, as this is their third game in four days. The Celtics are very tough to beat at home and they will have Hayward fully rested for this one. I also expect Irving to start playing better, as this will be his fourth game of the season. The trends are also overwhelmingly in favor of the Celtics, as they have dominated Orlando in Boston. I will lay the points and take the Celtics in this contest. I also think the under is worth a look, as both teams rank near the bottom of the league in points per game.

Magic vs. Celtics ATS Pick: Celtics and Under at BetDSI
Magic vs. Celtics Score Prediction: Celtics 110, Magic 95

NBA Preview - San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are shorthanded early in the season due to the fallout of the brawl with the Rockets last week. Point guard Rajon Rondo and power forward Brandon Ingram both threw punches in an altercation with Chris Paul and each have been suspended multiple games. They are both expected to miss this week’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers are 0-2 on the season but they have had a pair of tough games against the Trail Blazers and the Rockets. Los Angeles will be favored to win this game against the Spurs but it’s going to be tougher without 40 percent of the starting lineup. However, Lonzo Ball played well last time out and he should move in to the starting lineup for Rondo. The Lakers also have LeBron James still, of course, to Los Angeles seems to have a solid shot at winning this matchup in NBA wagering.

This NBA basketball game between the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California at 10:30 p.m ET on Monday, October 22nd, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on NBA TV.

We'll have NBA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NBA season.

Odds Analysis

There is no spread yet but the Lakers are expected to be the slight favorite. They are the home team and have the best player on the court. The Spurs were a perennial contender for years but the trade of Kawhi Leonard in the offseason puts into question this team’s ceiling. San Antonio is 1-1 on the year and would love to pull out this win.

This is a game with live betting opportunities, which allows for bettors to make wagers when the action is in progress. It is a great way to take advantage of any trends in the game.

Player to Watch

Lonzo Ball -- The former No. 2 overall pick was relegated to the bench by the signing of Rondo, but now he’s back in a prime spot. He played well last time out against the Rockets, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ball shot well from the field, hitting 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.

Ball’s biggest issue is his outside shooting, so if he has improved and can hit out there regularly, it would be a big help.

Key Stat

28.0. -- That’s the number of points per game DeMar DeRozan has averaged in the first two games with his new team, the Spurs. DeRozan was acquired from the Raptors this offseason in exchange for Leonard. Even though San Antonio didn’t want to make the deal, it was a decent return considering Leonard wanted out.

DeRozan has added 6.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per contest early on. He is shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. If the Spurs are to make a deep playoff run this year, they will need to be able to keep up with the high-scoring teams. They lack a bunch of playmakers so DeRozan will need to take a lead role.

This will be an important game for him against the Lakers as DeRozan aims to put up big numbers once again.

Free NBA ATS Picks

The Lakers have to deal with some adversity early on with the suspensions of Rondo and Ingram. It hurts the team’s talent as well as its depth. The Spurs are a solid team but the Lakers still have the home court and LeBron. Los Angeles will have some ups and downs early on but this is a game it should win even short-handed.

Keep an eye on the spread as this one could be a down-to-the-wire finish. The scoring total will be interesting. The Spurs are usually lower-scoring but have been in shootouts thus far, and the Lakers have been in high-scoring games as well in NBA live betting.

NBA Games to Watch - Week 2

We are still in the very early stages of the new NBA season, but it has already become clear that there are going to be some changes this season. The Cleveland Cavaliers are, as expected winless without LeBron, although the same can be said for the Lakers, the team he moved to.

The Toronto Raptors look like the class of the East in the early going, while the Denver Nuggets are the surprise leaders at the top of the West after 3 games. All of this may well change in the coming months, but it sure has been fun to see the NBA back in business.

Let’s look ahead to the next few days to pick out the best games on the NBA schedule this week with all odds, picks and predictions sponsored by YouWager.eu.

Monday - San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

The Spurs are no longer the dominant team that they were over the past decade or so, but they are still a team that should be fighting for a playoff spot this season in the Western Conference. They are currently sitting at 1-1 in the early going and start this week with a trip to LA to face a Lakers team still looking for their first win in the LeBron James era. It was always asking too much for James to come in and turn this team around overnight, so fans are going to need to put a cap on their expectations until this team gels. I think the Lakers might still be winless at the end of this one.

Wednesday - Philadelphia 76ers at Milwaukee Bucks

While all the talk in the Eastern Conference has been about the Raptors and the Celtics, the 76ers and Bucks are a pair of teams with more than enough talent to do a little damage. The Bucks are 2-0 to start the season, while the 76ers have rebounded nicely after getting pounded by the Boston Celtics in their season opener. These two split their 4-game regular season series last year, with the home team coming away with the win in each of those games. If that trend holds, look for the Bucks to get the win.

Thursday - Boston Celtics at Oklahoma City Thunder

The Boston Celtics are among the favorites to win the Eastern Conference this season and they certainly made a big statement early on with a huge win over the Philadelphia 76ers. They split their next two games, though, and are now sitting at 2-1 on the season. Just before we hit the weekend, the Celtics will be on the road to face a Thunder team coming into this week with an 0-3 record. OKC were forced to start the season without the services of Russell Westbrook, but the big man is now back, so look for their fortunes to change. The Celtics won both meetings last season and I like them again here.

Friday - Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets

It was a down year for the Clippers last season, but they have quickly shown that they are ready and willing to compete this year, going 2-1 to start the season, courtesy of back to back wins to close out the opening week of the season. Things have not gone as smoothly for the Rockets, as they are 1-2 and sitting below the playoff line. They had a chippy night versus the Lakers, with a minor scuffle leading to suspensions for some of the players involved. The Rockets will launch sooner than later, starting with a win here.

NBA investigating Lakers-Rockets
October 21, 2018
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay Sunday for an on-court fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit.

Ingram was suspended four games, Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter at Staples Center.

The penalty was costliest to Paul, who has the highest salary of the trio and was fined a total of $491,782. Paul is president of the NBA Players' Association. He began serving his suspension Sunday night and wasn't at the arena when the Rockets lost to the Clippers 115-112. Rondo will be docked a total of $186,207, while Ingram's total is $158,816.

Houston coach Mike D'Antoni disagreed with the severity of Paul's penalty.

''It's just not equitable,'' he said. ''If you wanted to suspend him one (game) I get it, just to make a statement. Then you're talking monetarily, he's paying three times more than the other guys are paying for missing games? That doesn't seem to be right.''

Ingram and Rondo will start their suspensions Monday night when the Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs.

The league said Ingram was suspended for aggressively escalating the altercation and throwing a punch in the direction of Paul, confronting referee Jason Phillips in a hostile manner, and instigating the overall incident by shoving Rockets guard James Harden.

''It is what it is,'' Harden said. ''I don't know how to decide how many games.''

Eric Gordon, who started in place of Paul against the Clippers, defended his teammate, saying, ''If somebody is attacking you, you got to somewhat protect yourself.''

Rondo was suspended for instigating a physical altercation with Paul, and spitting and throwing multiple punches at the Rockets star. Paul was suspended for poking at and making contact Rondo's face and throwing multiple punches at him.

''What is he supposed to do? Just stand there and get spit on and then take a punch in the face and say, `Well, that's OK,''' said D'Antoni, who called Rondo's spitting ''pretty disgusting.''

''In the heat of the moment when somebody does that, that's tough, that's really tough,'' D'Antoni said.

The Rockets led 109-108 with 4:13 remaining when Ingram fouled Harden and then shoved him and confronted Phillips after getting a technical foul.

Ingram, Paul and Rondo were all ejected. Houston won 124-115, spoiling the Lakers' home debut for LeBron James.

''We don't want this to happen again,'' said NBA executive vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe, who handed down the penalties. ''(We are) sending a clear message that this is not acceptable behavior and you cannot do this. So in this particular instance, the multiple-game suspensions are pretty severe both to their teams and financially to the players.''

The suspension to Ingram is the longest for an on-court incident since April 2012, when Metta World Peace of the Lakers received seven games. World Peace elbowed Harden, who was then playing for Oklahoma City, in a game also at Staples Center to earn that penalty, the irony being Harden is the one who Ingram fouled to start Saturday's fracas.

There have been longer suspensions in recent years, but none for an on-court altercation than what Ingram got.

''We have so few of these and we're very lucky in that regard,'' VanDeWeghe said. ''This game is played with a lot of passion and it's an aggressive game and obviously there is contact in the game. Our players play with a lot of respect for each other and for everybody else.''

With Paul and Rondo, that hasn't always the case.

They have a history of raising the ire of the other, going back to at least 2009 during a Boston-New Orleans game. Rondo was with the Celtics and Paul with the Hornets when players from both sides had to get between the two point guards as tempers seemed to flare after a game where they got tangled up in the second quarter.

VanDeWeghe clearly indicated that Rondo did not acknowledge spitting on Paul.

''Rajon has his own view of what happened,'' VanDeWeghe said. ''I think that we had a clear view that, however you want to interpret it, that there was a spitting in Chris Paul's direction. I think I'm going to leave it at that.''

Leonard helps Raptors rout Hornets
October 22, 2018
By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Markieff Morris had 28 points including six 3-pointers and the Washington Wizards won their first game of the season with a 125-124 overtime victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

Bradley Beal added 25 points for the Wizards, and Otto Porter Jr. blocked Damian Lillard's layup attempt at the final buzzer to seal the win.

Lillard had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Trail Blazers, who lost their first game after opening the season 2-0.

Morris had a layup and a free throw to put the Wizards ahead 120-117 in overtime. Lillard's layup got Portland closer, but Morris landed a 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds left.

Lillard's jumper got Portland within a basket before John Wall's 17-footer with 10.1 second left looked to all but seal it for the Wizards. CJ McCollum made it interesting with a 3-pointer for the Blazers and Wall missed a free throw, but Porter blocked Lillard's attempt to win it with a layup at the buzzer.

Jusuf Nurkic finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds for the Blazers.

RAPTORS 127, HORNETS 106

TORONTO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points, Kyle Lowry had 16 points and a season-high 14 assists, and Toronto never trailed in a victory over the Hornets, the Raptors' fourth straight win to open the season.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 17 points, Danny Green had 16, and Serge Ibaka added 15 as the Raptors won for the ninth time in 11 meetings with the Hornets.

Toronto is the first NBA team to reach four wins. Denver (3-0) can match the Raptors when it hosts Sacramento on Tuesday.

Leonard returned after sitting out Saturday night's road win over Washington, the second game of a back-to-back. The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year was limited to nine games last season because of a quadriceps injury.

Kemba Walker scored 26 points and Jeremy Lamb had 16 as the Hornets dropped their first road game of the season.

MAGIC 93, CELTICS 90

BOSTON (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 24 points and 12 rebounds while the Orlando Magic survived two 3-point attempts by Boston in the closing seconds to beat the Celtics.

Trailing 91-90 with 14.2 seconds to play, Boston was forced to foul Evan Fournier after Orlando inbounded the ball. He stepped to the line and made both free throws with 7.8 seconds left.

Kyrie Irving then missed a 3 from the right corner, and after Al Horford grabbed the rebound and fed it out - Gordon Hayward's rimmed out just before the buzzer sounded.

Irving led the Celtics (2-2) with 22 points.

TIMBERWOLVES 101, PACERS 91

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jimmy Butler returned to Minnesota's lineup and scored 20 points to lead the Timberwolves to a win over the Pacers.

Butler, who received a mix of boos and cheers during player introductions, sat out Saturday due to precautionary rest. Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota, while rookie guard Josh Okogie scored 12 points off the bench.

The Wolves led by as many as nine early before Indiana cut it to one point at the half. Victor Oladipo scored 15 of his 20 points before halftime to lead the Pacers. He has now scored at least 20 points in three straight games.

BUCKS 124, KNICKS 113

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points and 15 rebounds, Khris Middleton sank a pair of late 3-pointers and the Bucks survived a furious second-half rally by New York to hold off the Knicks.

Middleton was efficient in scoring 30 points, going 7 of 8 from 3-point range. Antetokounmpo only had one 3, but it came in a big spot, giving unbeaten Milwaukee the lead for good midway through the fourth period.

Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Knicks with 24 points. Trey Burke added 19 and Mario Hezonja had 18.

Middleton's 3-pointer with 2:22 left gave the Bucks a 116-110 lead, and Eric Bledsoe and Middleton had 3s in the final two minutes as Milwaukee pulled away.

All five Bucks starters scored in double figures. Bledsoe had 16 points, center Brook Lopez added 13 and guard Malcolm Brogdon had 11.

MAVERICKS 115, BULLS 109

DALLAS (AP) - DeAndre Jordan became the first Dallas player in 24 years to start a season with three straight double-doubles, getting 18 points and 16 rebounds to help the Mavericks beat the Bulls.

Luka Doncic scored 19 in the 19-year-old's second home game, another win that put the Mavericks (2-1) over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2015-16 season.

Zach LaVine scored 34 for the Bulls and is the third Chicago player to open a season with three straight 30-point games. The others were Michael Jordan in 1986 and Bob Love in 1971.

Wesley Matthews led six Dallas players in double figures with 20 points. Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell and Dorian Finney-Smith scored 12 apiece.

GRIZZLIES 92, JAZZ 84

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mike Conley scored 23 points to lead the Grizzlies to a victory over the Jazz.

Marc Gasol finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists before fouling out with 3:41 left. Shelvin Mack added 12 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who picked up their first road victory despite shooting 36.9 percent (31 of 84).

Jae Crowder scored 15 points and Donovan Mitchell added 14 for the Jazz. Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 12 rebounds as Utah lost its second straight home game. The Jazz shot just 35.4 percent (29 of 82).

A trio of 3-pointers from Shelvin Mack and Wayne Seldin fueled a 16-4 run for Memphis in the fourth quarter. Garrett Temple capped the outburst with a layup that gave Grizzlies an 86-70 lead with 3:49 remaining.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Someone took a survey; here are the most popular Halloween candies:

1) Reese’s peanut butter cups 84.2%

2) Reese’s miniatures 81.9%

3) Twix 81.8%

4) Kit Kat 78.8%

5) Snickers 76.7%

6) Reese’s Pieces 73.4%

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Oakland Raiders traded Khahil Mack to the Bears for two #1 picks before the season, then started season 1-5; Monday they traded WR Omari Cooper to Dallas, for another #1 pick, as they continue to plot for the future, when they’ll be playing home games in Las Vegas.

Raiders now have three #1 picks in the 2019 Draft, which will be held in Nashville; too bad it isn’t in Las Vegas, because Raiders are going to be the center of attention. Raiders also have two #1 picks in the 2020 Draft.

12) One of the values of Twitter is getting lot of diverse opinions; almost everyone said that the Raiders did very well getting a #1 pick for Cooper, but then on Monday Night Football, those guys are all saying the Cowboys made out on the deal. What gives?

Ed Werder, who has covered the Cowboys for decades, pointed out that this is the third time Jerry Jones has traded draft picks for a star WR— the other two WR’s he got were Joey Galloway and Roy Williams. When your owner/GM is in his 70’s, draft picks tend to mean less.

11) This from the legendary Gil Brandt on Twitter:
lowest %age of players still on team that picked them (in last six NFL Drafts):

16.0% Oakland Raiders
16.3% Buffalo Bills
20.5% New Jersey Giants
20.7% Cleveland Browns
24.6% San Francisco 49ers

10) Denver Broncos haven’t had consecutive losing seasons since 1971 (4-9-1) and ’72 (5-9); they were 5-11 LY, are 3-4 this year. I’m guessing they’ll be a coaching change if they don’t finish at least .500 this season.

9) Only three NFL teams haven’t played a regular season game outside this country; the Eagles, Packers, and Panthers. Philly plays Jacksonville in London this week.

8) Would Auburn really cough up $32M to tell football coach Gus Malzahn to take a hike? Malzahn is 28-19 in conference games; the guy was a high school coach not that long ago, but do people at Auburn really have $32M lying around to get rid of a fairly successful coach? Wow.

7) Oklahoma Sooners haven’t lost consecutive regular season games since 1999; they’re 39-0 SU in the games following their last 39 regular season losses.

6) According to Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart, Houston 2B Jose Altuve had surgery Friday to repair a patella (kneecap) avulsion fracture in his right knee. According to the Mayo Clinic website, an avulsion fracture occurs when a small chunk of bone attached to a tendon or ligament gets pulled away from the main part of the bone.

Altuve played thru that injury since August 21, hitting .276; he is one tough dude.

5) Cincinnati Reds showed very little imagination and hired David Bell as their new manager. Bell is a Cincinnati native and the son of current Reds executive Buddy Bell, and grandson of Gus Bell, both of whom played for Cincinnati.

David Bell played for seven big league teams, but never for the Reds.

Weird thing is that Bell doesn’t get to pick his own coaches; he will make recommendations, but the front office has the final say. Being a manager isn’t as big a deal as it used to be.

4) If you read this space a lot, you know I love basketball, and I have the NBA package on DirecTV- its fun to watch the games, but it is becoming more difficult to actually follow the league.

Everyone who plays/coaches in the league is pretty rich or really rich, but so few of them appear to be remotely happy— so much anger, and the season is a week old.

I mean, Rondo/Paul got into a scuffle in their game Saturday night , and then Rondo’s girlfriend shoves Paul’s wife afterwards; seriously? Time for everyone to grow up some.

Chris Paul got a two-game suspension for the fracas, that’ll cost him $491,962; the others, much less. Lakers’ Brandon Ingram ran into the scuffle and threw a punch; he got a longer suspension than either Paul or Rondo, but he doesn’t make as much $$$ as they do.

3) College basketball has these “closed/secret” scrimmages between teams; I don’t understand why they’re kept secret, when there is money to be made showing them on TV.

This weekend, North Carolina/Villanova scrimmaged, as did Minnesota/Creighton. Teams all over the country do it, but it is information being hidden and that hurts the sport.

2) Weird doings at the U of Arizona; back in January, the Wildcats fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after six years after a sexual harassment allegation against the coach.

Kevin Sumlin is the new coach; Arizona is 3-5 after a 31-30 loss at UCLA Saturday, when they used their backup QB in place of injured starter Khalil Tate- that backup is Rhett Rodriguez, son of the former coach.

The kid played alright; 15-34 for 231 yards, with two TD’s, two INT’s, but it had to be so odd, a kid playing for the coach who replaced his fired father.

1) Before Rodriguez got the Arizona job, he worked a season in the CBS Sports studio doing college football Saturdays; as soon as the Wildcats hired him, he was off recruiting; the first day CBS Sports had a show after Rodriguez quit, the crew had RichRod on as a guest via remote from Tucson.

Here’s the thing; the whole one-hour show, they left the chair Rodriguez had sat in all season empty, thats the regard they held him in. After that I always rooted for his teams. Saturday night, I was rooting for his son.

Hot & Not Report
October 22, 2018
By YouWager.eu

Who's Hot and Who's Not

Week of October 22nd

In last week's piece the focus centered on College Football's Top 25 teams and how well or poorly they were doing against the spread. We had 10 ranked teams out on the road this weekend, and after that spot being so bad for the ranked squads basically all year, it was still a losing mark for them at 4-6 ATS in Week 8, but many of the big boys like Alabama, Michigan, and Oklahoma stepped up and accounted for three of the four ATS victories.

The headline from this past weekend in College Football is all about second-ranked Ohio State's blowout loss at Purdue as it's now two straight weeks that the No. 2 team in the country has been knocked off. The Clemson Tigers slide into that No. 2 role as of now and wouldn't you know it, just as all this talk ramps up about yet another Alabama/Clemson playoff meeting, Clemson finds themselves in just the awful role of being ranked second in the country and out on the road as a big road favorite vs an unranked squad. Last week's piece talked all about the benefits of fading ranked teams away from home, and while Florida State hasn't lived up to expectations at all in 2018, chances are they'll be at or near their best this weekend vs Clemson.

However, for this week, it's time to change things up a bit and check in on the first week of action in the NBA, as I know basketball bettors have anxiously been waiting for this season to start. And while we are still just a week or so into the year, most teams have had the chance to play two or three games and some interesting league-wide trends have come to light.

So that's what I'll be taking a look at here:

Who's Hot

Five Expected Bottom-Feeders with no chance at an NBA Title this year; 12-3 ATS

The NBA has, and will always be a star-driven league simply because of the nature of the game. One or two top tier players in basketball can easily take control of a game in basketball relative to other team sports like football or hockey where really only the collective effort of the team produces desired results consistently. That means that the NBA is one where bettors (and casual fans) generally know that the NBA title is really only going to be won by 5-8 teams depending, making the other 20+ organizations nothing more than “filler” in regards to championship aspirations. It's why you get some very, very big futures numbers on these projected bottom-feeders to win it all prior to the year. This year was no different as there were 12 NBA teams that had about +30000 or greater odds to win it all.

That's nearly half the league that virtually has no chance at a highly successful year in terms of outright wins, but through a week of action on the hardwood, five of those teams have stepped up and produced a 12-3 ATS mark so far. Charlotte (3-0 ATS), New York (3-0 ATS), Cleveland (2-1 ATS), Orlando (2-1 ATS) and Sacramento (2-1 ATS) have been great wagers so far, as they've exemplified the saying of the point spread being the great equalizer.

Chances are we don't see these ATS runs last a lengthy amount of time, but I would not be surprised to see a few of these teams (along with some of the other projected “bottom feeders”) to end up finishing among the leaders in the NBA this year in terms of their ATS record. Monday's nine-game slate has Charlotte, New York, and Orlando all on the road and all catching +9 or greater on the spread. So don't say I didn't warn you if you've already, or are thinking about laying all that chalk against those hot ATS teams if those squads do continue to cash tickets.

Who's Not

Western Conference Title Favorites (Golden State, LAL, Houston, OKC) ATS; 2-9 ATS

On the other side of the coin, we've got the projected championship contenders this year limping out of the gate and burning ATS wagers left, right, and center.

Golden State, Houston, the Lakers, and OKC, came into the 2018 season as the most likely teams to come out of the Western Conference this year, with Golden State leading the way against at about -200 to win it all. Houston was priced in the +850 range, while L.A (+1000), and OKC (+3000) were given outside shots by bookmakers.

Now, everyone knows that these four teams are absolutely loaded with talent, as the four of them currently employ probably 90% of the top players in this league. You've got LeBron James, James Harden, CP3, Russell Westbrook, Paul George, and the entire Warriors staring lineup, all wearing one of those four jerseys and bringing plenty of support from fans (and betting markets) with them.

Furthermore, if you look at the 2016 US Olympic Basketball roster, you'll see that half of that roster was composed of guys currently on either Golden State, L.A, Houston, or OKC. That percentage would have been much higher too if Harden, Westbrook, CP3, and LeBron didn't withdraw from consideration, and Steph Curry wasn't hurt at the time. I mean, there's a case to be made that if there was another Olympic tournament this year, the entire US squad could come from just these four Western Conference teams.

Yet, as I said before, the point spread is always the great equalizer, and because of talent, name brand recognition, and perception, all four of these teams have been highly overvalued through the first week of play. That's what a 2-9 ATS record shows, especially when those two total ATS victories came in matchups where someone was guaranteed to cover the spread when two of these four teams squared off against one another (Golden State vs OKC, Houston vs LAL). That means that effectively, these four teams are a combined 0-7 ATS so far this year, which is probably the opposite of what many that may be newer to NBA betting would expect. But market perception forces oddsmakers to always shade the spreads towards these heavily favored/popular teams, and results show that as fearful as it may seem to bet against powerhouses like LeBron, Houston, or Golden State, those plays do tend to make cash.

After all, Golden State has owned this league with four straight NBA Finals appearances and three titles the past few years. But the past two seasons the Warriors have basically been a losing ATS wager – 40-39-3 ATS in 2016-17 and 34-47-1 ATS last year – as they just have a tough time cashing on these lofty numbers. Heck, the three worst teams against the spread last year were Cleveland, Oklahoma City, and Golden State, so it's not like fading overvalued lines/players/teams has only worked through a week of the 2018 season.

These are all things to keep in mind as you go forward with your NBA betting this year, because the point spreads on teams like the Warriors and Rockets aren't likely to get much lower than they are now. These teams will eventually find their rhythm a bit and start piling up SU wins, but for my money, I'd always tend to lean towards fading these powerhouse NBA squads simply because of the inflated prices.

Griffin drops 50; Pistons top 76ers in OT
October 23, 2018
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Blake Griffin scored a career-high 50 points and had the game-winner after he was fouled on a driving layup with 1.8 seconds left as Detroit topped Philadelphia 133-132 in a wild overtime thriller on Tuesday night.

JJ Redick's four-point play with 5.6 seconds left in overtime set up Griffin's dramatics, while Joel Embiid, who had 33 points and 11 rebounds, missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.

Redick had 30 points and scored a 3-pointer while being fouled by Reggie Jackson after the Pistons point guard made two free throws to take a 130-128 lead.

The 76ers were without Ben Simmons, out because of back tightness.

Griffin faked a handoff on the final play and drove the lane for the basket, getting fouled by Robert Covington. He made the ensuing free throw for the win.

Griffin was 20 of 35 from the field, going 5 for 10 on 3-pointers, scoring his most points as a member of the PIstons for the second straight game.

Jackson had 23 points and Ish Smith scored 21 for the Pistons, who are 3-0 for the first time since 2015-16, the last time they made the playoffs.

PELICANS 116, CLIPPERS 109

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis highlighted a 34-point and 13-rebound performance with a clutch left-wing 3 with less than two minutes remaining, and the New Orleans Pelicans remained unbeaten through three games with a victory over the Clippers.

New Orleans won for the first time when Nikola Mirotic struggled from 3-point range. He was 0-for-6 from deep, but still managed to score 18 points and grab 12 rebounds.

Elfrid Payton scored 20, including a 3 that made it 113-103 with just less than a minute to go. Julius Randle added 18 points before fouling out with 2:17 to go.

Tobias Harris scored 26 points and Danilo Gallinari 24 for the Clippers, who were playing their first road game of the season after winning their previous two at home. Lou Williams added 17 points for Los Angeles, which narrowly outshot New Orleans but was done in by 17 turnovers.

NUGGETS 126, KINGS 112

DENVER (AP) - Jamal Murray scored 14 of his 19 points in the third quarter and Nikola Jokic had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Nuggets to a win over the Kings.

Denver has won its first four games for the first time since starting 5-0 in 2009-10. The Nuggets swept their three-game homestand, including a win over Golden State on Sunday.

The Nuggets remained unbeaten despite allowing a team to break the century mark in points for the first time this season. The Nuggets held opponents to an NBA-best 95.7 points in the first three games but simply outscored Sacramento, which entered Tuesday second in the NBA in scoring at 125.7 points a game.

Gary Harris scored 18 points and Paul Millsap added 15 for Denver.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting trends for Week 8 in the NFL:

— Lions covered eight of their last ten games.

— Colts covered their last five pre-bye games.

— Kansas City covered its last eleven games.

— Ravens covered two of last 10 vs NFC teams.

— Eagles are 2-7-1 in last 10 games as a favorite.

— Cleveland covered six of its last eight games.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

13) According to ESPN.com‘s Darren Rovell, at William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada, 73% of the money on Monday night’s NFL game was on the Falcons, so the swing on the Giants’ 2-point conversion with 0:05 left was large in favor of the house.

Would be fun to know nation-wide, how much $$$ changed hands with Giants covering the spread like that. Had to be a huge chunk of change, right???

12) The greatest compliment any coach can give to a player is to have him on the court/field at the end of a close game; actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words.

Wizards-Trailblazers were 108-108 in last minute Monday night; Portland had Nick Stauskus on the court— Stauskus didn’t start, but he played 30:00 and he finished, tying the game with a 3 late in 4th quarter. Stauskus scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds. When a coach lets you finish, that shows true belief in your ability.

11) While we’re somewhere near the subject, I think assists on 3-point shots should count as 1.5 assists, since they’re 3-point assists, not 2-point assists. Same goes for passes that lead to made foul shots.

10) Since 2001, New England is 38-37 (.507) when losing the turnover battle.

During that time, the rest of NFL is 713-2,765-8 (.206) when losing the turnover battle.

9) From Ralph Michaels: Jacksonville Jaguars are only the 11th team since 1989 to lose back-to-back games as a favorite while scoring 7 or fewer points in both games.

In their next game after that, those other 10 teams went 5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS, with over 7-2-1.

8) The ESPN documentaries are basketball are great history lessons for anyone who likes basketball; its like watching highlights of my childhood on TV. Good stuff.

7) NC State 103, Maryland 100 in OT— 1974 ACC title game was one of the greatest college basketball games ever played, just a fantastic game that helped change the future of college hoops. I was 14 years old and remember lying on my bed listening to the game on radio— 103-100 with no shot clock or 3’s.

People don’t realize; back then, only one team from each conference made the NCAA’s, so the loser of the ACC tournament didn’t even make the NCAA tournament. NC State was #2 in the country, Maryland was #3 in the country, so the ’74 ACC title game was an elimination game just to get in the tournament!!!!

In 2002, Maryland won the national title in basketball after losing in the ACC tournament, so the bigger tournament has obviously proven to be a much better thing.

6) Former NFL special teams star Steve Tasker is a sideline reporter for CBS now; when he broke into the NFL in 1987, Jerry Glanville was the Houston Oilers’ defensive coordinator.

31 years later, Glanville is an assistant coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL, where one of the Ti-Cat players is Tasker’s son Luke.

5) When Wade Phillips started coaching in the NFL, neither Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan had been born yet.

4) Only QB’s to beat all 32 NFL teams: Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.

3) The GEICO commercial with Vikings’ WR Stefan Diggs is tremendous; his neighbors notice that everything sticks to his hands, which makes it tough for him to take the garbage out.

2) World Series Game 1: Red Sox 8, Dodgers 4— Eduardo Nunez broke open a close game with a 3-run, pinch-hit homer in the 7th inning. Neither starting pitcher finished the fifth inning.

1) Random political numbers; as of October 2017, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrat, 24% identified as Republican, and 42% as Independent. I was curious about that at 5am one night, so I looked it up and now you know, too.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

Game of the Night: Jazz at Rockets – 8:05 PM EST

Although it is a long season, both Houston and Utah have started slow by owning 1-2 records heading into Wednesday’s matchup at the Toyota Center. The Jazz have won their only road game at Sacramento, but dropped a pair of home contests to the Warriors and Grizzlies. In last Friday’s setback to the defending champions, Utah squandered a 16-point third quarter lead in a 124-123 loss, but managed to cover as 2 ½-point underdogs. However, Memphis shut down Utah in Monday’s 92-84 home defeat as hefty 10 ½-point favorites, while Donovan Mitchell scored 14 points in spite of shooting 6-of-17 from the floor.

The Rockets were blitzed by the high-scoring Pelicans in the season opener, 131-112, as Houston trailed by as many as 29 points in the third quarter. Houston traveled to Los Angeles for a pair of games against the Lakers and Clippers, splitting the two. The opener against the Lakers proved to be an entertaining game that featured Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo scuffling and getting ejected, resulting in Paul serving a two-game suspension. The Rockets defeated the Lakers, 124-115 as 3 ½-point favorites, but were tripped up the next night by the Clippers without CP3 in a three-point setback.

Paul will be serving the second game of his suspension on Wednesday, as he will be denied an encore performance against Utah in which he scored 41 points in the second round series clincher this past spring. Houston eliminated Utah in five games, while finishing 8-1 against the Jazz in nine matchups last season.

Is Tonight the Night?

The Lakers (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS) have yet to pick up a victory in the LeBron James era, losing to the Blazers, Rockets, and Spurs. Those are three playoff teams from a year ago, but Los Angeles wasn’t expected to wait until its fourth game to pick up its first victory. The Lakers travel to Phoenix as a short favorite, trying to rebound from a tough overtime loss to the Spurs on Monday.

In spite of erasing an eight-point deficit with 70 seconds left in regulation, the Lakers couldn’t hold onto a late five-point lead in overtime as James missed a pair of game-clinching free throws in a 143-142 defeat. Rondo continues his three-game suspension following his dust-up with the Rockets last Saturday night, as second-year guard span style="font-weight: bold;">Lonzo Ball scored 14 points and dished out six assists in the San Antonio loss.

The Suns (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) crushed the Mavericks in the season opener, but lost back-to-back road contests at Denver and Golden State. Not surprisingly, Phoenix closed as double-digit underdogs in both away games and lost by over 20 points each time, but cashed the UNDER each time. Although the Lakers have made sweeping changes to their roster, they still have owned the Suns recently by winning three of four matchups last season.

Buck it Up

The Central division is wide-open this season as the Bucks and Pacers are expected to fight it out for the top spot. Milwaukee (3-0 SU, 1-1-1 ATS) has jumped out to a strong start, including a 17-point home blowout of Indiana last weekend. The Bucks have outrebounded all three opponents, while All-Star Giannis Anetetokounmpo put up 31 points and 15 rebounds in a 124-113 victory over the Knicks on Monday.

Milwaukee welcomes in Philadelphia (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS), as the 76ers play with no rest following Tuesday’s 133-132 overtime loss at Detroit. Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 33 points, as Ben Simmons sat out due to a back injury. Simmons is questionable for tonight’s contest as the Sixers and Bucks split four meetings last season with the home team winning each time.

Road Woes

The Pacers (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) have dominated in both home contests this season by pounding the Grizzlies and Nets at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana hasn’t fared as well away from the Hoosier State by losing double-digit decisions at Milwaukee and Minnesota. The Pacers led the Wolves by one going into the fourth quarter on Monday, but Minnesota outscored Indiana, 29-18 to win 101-91.

Indiana travels to San Antonio (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) as the Spurs return home after splitting a pair of road contests against the Blazers and Lakers. span style="font-weight: bold;">LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan combined for 69 points in Monday’s overtime triumph at Los Angeles, as the Spurs have hit the OVER in all three games this season. The Pacers swept the Spurs last season as both contests easily finished UNDER the total.

Breaking Through

The Wizards (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) finally reached the win column in Monday’s 125-124 overtime triumph at Portland as five-point underdogs. Washington fell short in home losses to Miami and Toronto before the win two days ago as the Wizards continue their five-game road swing at Golden State tonight. The Wizards have lost four straight visits to Oracle Arena, while dropping seven of the past eight meetings with Golden State since 2015.

The Warriors (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) covered for the first time this season in Monday’s 123-103 blowout of Phoenix as 12 ½-point favorites. Golden State went through a pair of close-shaves in a one-point win at Utah and a two-point defeat at Denver this past weekend. The defending champions hit the road out east for three games starting Friday at New York as Golden State tries to improve on a 3-9 ATS mark in October the last two seasons.

Fighting for Five

The Raptors (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS) are looking to become the first team to reach five wins on the young season. All three of Toronto’s home wins have come by 12 points or more, including Monday’s 127-106 rout of Charlotte. The Raptors are scoring in bunches by putting up 113 points or more in all four wins, as offseason acquisition Kawhi Leonard is averaging 25.7 points per game. Toronto has knocked down 42 three-pointers in three games at Air Canada Center, while going 4-0 to the OVER.

Minnesota (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) heads north of the border trying for its first road win of the season. The Wolves rallied past the Pacers on Monday, while limiting Indiana to 91 points after getting burned for 140 points by Dallas last Saturday. Minnesota has covered in five of the last six meetings with Toronto, including twice as an underdog last season.
