Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-3 SU, 7-3 ATS)
Point-spread: Winnipeg -2
Total: 60

Game Overview

The Roughriders are making a move in the West Division standings with three wins in a row (SU and ATS) and they can make up some more ground on Winnipeg in the backend of this home-and-home series. Kevin Glen put the ball up 36 times in Sunday’s win and he completed 26 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns in one of his best performances of the year.

Winnipeg’s recent five-game SU winning streak came to an end in Sunday’s loss and it is now 4-2 ATS during this same span. The total went OVER the closing 58-point line in that loss and it has gone OVER in eight of the Blue Bombers’ first 10 games this year behind an offense that is averaging 33.2 points per game. Matt Nichols threw for 364 yards and two scores against Saskatchewan, but he was also picked off twice.

Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg still holds a 4-1 SU edge in the last five games of the West Division clash, but Saskatchewan has covered in three of the last four meetings. The total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-8 SU, 3-6 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (4-6-1 SU, 7-3 ATS)
Point-spread: Ottawa -12
Total: 54

Game Overview

Hamilton lost to Ottawa 37-18 in Week 9 as a 3 ½-point home underdog with the total ending as a PUSH on that 55-point line. In Monday’s game against Toronto, the Tiger-Cats needed a last-minute 37 field goal to capture their first SU victory of the year. Jeremiah Masoli got the start at quarterback in place of Zach Collaros and he completed 19-of-33 attempts for 219 yards and a score. June Jones made his debut as Hamilton’s new head coach.

The RedBlacks are back on top in the East Division standings with last Thursday’s win against Montreal and they have now posted victories in their last three games both SU and ATS. The offense has averaged 33.3 PPG during this current run to complement a defense that has allowed an average of just 15.3 PPG. Trevor Harris added another 343 passing yards to his CFL-high 3,531 passing yards on the year.

Betting Trends

-- The road team has won the last three meetings SU, but Ottawa has a 5-1 edge ATS in the last six meetings. The total had gone OVER in the last four meetings before ending as a PUSH a few weeks ago.

Calgary Stampeders (8-1-1 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (7-3 SU, 3-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -6
Total: 56

Game Overview

Calgary continued to assert itself as the top team in the CFL with Monday’s victory. It was the Stampeders’ sixth SU win in a row while going a very profitable 5-0-1 ATS. The total went OVER the closing 55-point line against the Eskimos and it has gone OVER in three of their last five games. While Calgary’s offense has averaged 35.7 PPG during this winning streak, the defense has held opposing teams to fewer than 20 points in five of the six games.

The Eskimos’ current slide has reached three games both SU and ATS following an impressive SU seven-game winning streak to start the season. Edmonton has been a tough team to bet on all season long and it is 1-4 ATS in five previous home games this season. Mike Reilly completed 34 of his 53 passing attempts for 320 yards and two touchdowns in Monday’s losing cause, but he also tossed two interceptions to raise his total to nine on the year.

Betting Trends

-- The Stampeders have now won the last three meetings both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in the last four games between these two bitter West Division rivals.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Baseball is cool because odd things sometimes happen; Monday night/Tuesday morning’s Dodger-Giant game was nothing if not odd.

There was a 42-minute rain delay at the start, then the game began, the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter struck out and then the rains came again, forcing a rain delay of 2:52.

The game resumed at about 1:55am here in the east; it ended around 5am. Thats 5 in the morning.

12) Pablo Sandoval was in a 1 for 47 slump when he singled to left in the 6th inning very late Monday night, or at roughly 4am Tuesday morning here in the east.

11) Indians were -$500 against Detroit Tuesday; I’ve never seen a baseball line that high.

10) Only nine out of over 2,000 people went 5-0 in the first week of the SuperContest at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. Denver was -3 in the contest, so anyone who had that game got a push.

9) Charger-Bronco game Monday night was only Week 1 NFL game where no points were scored in the last 2:00 of either half.

8) All four NFC North teams covered the spread in Week 1, only division that can say that.

7) Dolphins are practicing in Oxnard, CA at the Cowboys’ training camp facility this week, as they prepare to play the Chargers Sunday. Has to be a very strange week for them.

6) Yasiel Puig’s platoon splits this year:
vs lefty pitchers: .162, one HR, 8 RBI, 105 AB
vs righty pitchers: .286, 24 HR, 58 RBI, 343 AB

Very odd for a right-handed hitter like Puig.

5) Tennessee started their game Sunday by trying an onside kick, the first team to try that since the Vikings in 2009. Neither onside kick worked.

4) 2018 baseball schedules were released Tuesday. Opening Day is Thursday, March 29— for the first time since 1968, every team will play on Opening Day.

3) A’s play the White Sox at home on April 17; the game is free for all fans— it marks the 50th anniversary of the A’s first game in Oakland, after they moved from Kansas City.

2) Milwaukee Brewers will find out early next season if they’re going to contend; they play 14 games in April against the Cubs/Cardinals.

1) Seattle Mariners play 18 road games next April; their schedule is usually more cumbersome because of their being in the Pacific Northwest, but 18 road games in April is tough.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 12
Joe Williams

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 12
-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 12
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 12
-- Home team posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 12
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 12

Analysis

In one of the most entertaining games of the season, Calgary (9-1-1) posted a comeback victory thanks to the arm of Bo Levi Mitchell, edging provincial rival Edmonton (7-4). Despite the 25-22 win, the Stampeders were unable to cover - their first non-cover since July 14 in Montreal, their only loss of the season. For the third time in four games it was an 'under' result.

The West Division continues to play well, or at least much, much better than the East Division. All teams in the West are .500 or above, even Saskatchewan (5-5). All teams in the East are at least three games under .500, and only Ottawa (4-7-1) has covered more games than they have not. Everyone in the East except for the RedBlacks has lost at least three games on the road, too.

Team Betting Notes

-- Hamilton (2-8) won for the second consecutive game, topping Ottawa. After an 0-8 SU/2-6 ATS start, the Tiger Cats have managed a 2-0 SU/ATS mark. It's mainly because their defense has improved. After allowing 31 or more points in each of their past eight, the Ti-Cats have given up 22 in each of their two wins. After a 5-1 'over' run, the 'under' is also 3-0-1 across the past four.

-- Despite their hot run, the Tiger Cats are still 1-8-2 ATS across their past 11 home games and 4-13-2 ATS in the past 19 overall. Things do not look to get much better this weekend with Saskatchewan visiting, as the Riders are 25-10-1 ATS across the past 36 in this series.

-- Ottawa remains in first-place, but just by one point. They suffered a 26-22 setback against the Ti-Cats at home, a shocking loss considering the RedBlacks were 12-point favorites. The non-cover stopped a 3-0 ATS run for Ottawa. One thing that has been consistent is the under for Ottawa, going 3-0-2 over their past five and 7-1-2 across their past 10.

-- Toronto (4-7) has dropped two in a row and five of their past six after a 3-2 SU start. The Argonauts just cannot seem to cover lately, going 1-7 ATS across the past eight. Bettors fading the Argos and betting the 'under' in their games have been cashing nicely. The 'under' is 4-0 over the past four, and 8-3 overall.

-- Montreal (3-8) has been in a tailspin lately, dropping four in a row and six of the past seven. Their lack of punch has been the reason for their struggles, averaging just 14.8 PPG during the four-game losing skid.

-- BC Lions (6-5) picked themselves off of the mat and slapped the brakes on a three-game losing streak in grand fashion. The Lions routed visiting Montreal by a 41-18 score for their first cover since Aug. 5. It was also their first 'over' result since July 28 after a 3-0-1 'under' run.

-- The Lions will face the Stamps in Calgary on Saturday night. The Lions are just 2-7-1 ATS in the past 10 meetings, and 1-4 ATS in their past five trips to Calgary. The 'over' has also cashed in seven of the past nine meetings in Calgary.

-- Winnipeg (8-3) posted their fourth consecutive victory at home with a 48-28 win over the Riders, going 3-1 ATS during the span. The 'over' has been the thing to bet with the Bombers, cashing in four straight and eight of the past nine.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 13
David Schwab

Friday, Sept. 15

Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-8 SU, 4-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Last week’s loss snapped a three-game winning streak both SU and against the spread and the total has now gone OVER in the Roughriders’ last three games. The big concern for Friday’s contest is the throwing hand of Kevin Glenn after leaving last week’s game with an apparent injury. This would be a tremendous loss given that Glenn is third in the CFL in passing touchdowns with 21. Brandon Bridge got the call when Glenn left the game.

The Tiger-Cats will try and string together its third win in a row this week (SU and ATS) following that SU eight-game losing streak while going 2-6 ATS. Jeremiah Masoli has been under center for the last two victories and against Ottawa he threw for 231 yards while connecting on 17 of his 31 passing attempts. The main reason for the quick turnaround is a defense that has not allowed more than 22 points in either victory.

Betting Trends

-- The home team is 4-0 both SU and ATS in the last four meetings with the total evenly split at 2-2. Saskatchewan won the first meeting this season 37-20 on July 8 as a one-point home underdog. The total went OVER the closing 52 ½-point line.

Saturday, Sept. 16

Edmonton Eskimos (7-4 SU, 4-7 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (4-7 SU, 3-8 ATS)
Point-spread: Toronto OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Edmonton needs to stop the bleeding in this SU four-game losing streak after winning its first seven contests SU. One of the biggest reasons why the Eskimos have lost their last four is a defense that has been burnt for an average of 37.8 points per game. The last two losses were to Calgary, but this unit gave up 54 points in a loss to Saskatchewan and 33 points in a loss to Winnipeg during this current slide.

The East Division is so weak this season that Toronto remains just a half game out of the lead despite a 1-5 run both SU and ATS in its last six games. Last week’s bye was a welcome relief on the heels of a stunning 24-22 loss to Hamilton as a three-point road favorite. The Argonauts still have Ricky Ray at quarterback as the third-leading passer in the league with 3,343 yards, but their top rusher Brandon Whitaker has just 318 total yards on the ground.

Betting Trends

-- This will be the first meeting this season as part of a home-and-home series and Edmonton comes in with a 3-0 edge both SU and ATS in the last three games between the two. The total went OVER in all three meetings.

British Columbia Lions (6-5 SU, 5-5-1 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (9-1-1 SU, 6-4-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

It looks like Jonathon Jennings will return to the starting lineup as the Lions’ signal caller after Travis Lulay was apparently lost for the rest of the season with a knee injury in last week’s win against Montreal. Jennings completed 22-of-29 attempts for 295 yards and two touchdowns against the Alouettes. He has now thrown for 1,720 yards and six touchdowns on the year.

Calgary looks like it is just warming up for another run deep into the postseason. The Eskimos put up much more of a battle this time around after the Stampeders rolled to a 39-18 as 10-point home favorites in the first game in this home-and-home tilt. Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback and Jerome Messam anchoring the running game are the team’s two biggest stars, but Calgary’s shutdown defense is the reason for the current SU seven-game winning streak (5-1-1 ATS).

Betting Trends

-- Calgary got past BC 21-17 on Aug. 18 as a four-point road favorite to extend its SU winning streak over the Lions to four games. The total stayed UNDER 56 points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven meetings.

Sunday, Sept. 17

Ottawa RedBlacks (4-7-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Montreal OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Ottawa’s recent three-game run both SU and ATS came to a sudden end last week, but it still has the slight edge in the East to repeat as division champions. The total stayed UNDER in that loss to the Tiger-Cats and it has now stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of the RedBlacks’ last 10 games. Adding injury to insult, quarterback Trevor Harris is expected to be out several weeks after badly bruising his shoulder in that loss.

With Harris out of the lineup for Ottawa, Montreal has an excellent opportunity to make up some ground in the East, but it is going to need a much better effort from its defense. The one strength of this team coming into this season was its defense, but going back to a 41-40 loss to Winnipeg on July 27, the Alouettes have allowed at least 32 points in five of their last six games.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has won seven of the last eight meetings both SU and ATS including a 32-4 victory against Montreal on Aug. 31 in a game that closed as a PICK. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

RECAP
CLOSING OUT THE ‘CATS: RIDERS FEND OFF TICATS FOR 27-19 WIN

HAMILTON – Canadian quarterback Brandon Bridge made his first start as a Roughrider and his big second quarter, combined with a defence that held tough late, helped Saskatchewan hold on to a 27-19 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Friday night at Tim Hortons Field.

The one-score game was almost inconceivable at one point in this contest but a pesky Ticats squad almost pulled out the comeback were it not for a number of timely plays by the Riders defence.

Bridge finished 21 of 31 for 231 yards and tossed a trio of touchdowns.

The University of South Alabama product was the favourite to start the contest with Kevin Glenn nursing a sore had but his status wasn’t confirmed until hours before kickoff.

The ‘Cats had strung together a pair of wins after a challenging start to the year with Jeremiah Masoli firmly at the controls under centre.

The Riders had a golden opportunity to put the first major on the board when former Ticats DB Mike Edem pounced on a fumble by WR Mike Jones to set the Riders up at the Hamilton 6-yard line. Pinned deep in their end, the Ticats called a hitch screen to Jones who had the pigskin knocked out to put the Riders on the doorstep.

Head coach Chris Jones elected to go with Vernon Adams Jr. on the series, likely to use his athleticism to give the ‘Cats a different look but Hamilton’s defence wasn’t fooled. Adams Jr. was flushed out of the pocket on consecutive plays and was forced to throw the ball away and then take a sack.

Saskatchewan would settle for a 12-yard field goal.

Bridge would return on the Riders’ next drive with a 3-0 lead but on second-and-eight had the ball punched loose by LB Larry Dean and recovered by DL Davon Coleman. The Ticats, however, also couldn’t put a major on the board and went two-and-out.

As the second quarter began, Bridge settled in. A pair of first down completions to Rob Bagg and Bakari Grant helped launch a 6-play, 75-yard scoring drive which was capped off by a 9-yard touchdown pass to St. FX grad WR Devon Bailey for a 10-0 lead.

With a major under his belt, Bridge was afforded great field position once again the next time he took the field. On the ensuing drive the Tiger-Cats got a productive gain out of CJ Gable on the ground but elected a screen pass on second-and-one to Jalen Saunders. Saunders was short of the first down already but had the ball punched loose by DB Kacy Rodgers and scooped up by DB Tobi Antigha.

Bridge went to work on a short field, getting 10 yards on a hitch from RB Kienan LaFrance before throwing a strike to a wide open Grant in the endzone to increase the Riders lead to 17-0.

After consecutive stalled drives, the Ticats offence found their footing shortly thereafter, answering the Grant score with a 6-play 75-yard scoring drive. The possession was finished off with a touchdown pass from Masoli to Saunders who was on a crossing route, snagged the football and turned up field for a 36-yard major.

The clubs traded field goals before halftime with the Riders leading 20-10.

When the teams returned to the field, the Riders were primed on both sides of the ball. First, the defence forced another turnover when DB Ed Gainey snagged the interception in his own zone. Bridge once again had great field position shortly thereafter when Tiger-Cats DB Demond Washington was assessed a 25-yard penalty and an immediate disqualification for spitting at a Riders player.

Bridge made the Ticats pay by quickly finding SB Namaan Roosevelt for a 23-yard touchdown pass to increase the Riders lead to 27-10.

The Ticats responded with a pair of field goals off the foot of Sergio Castillo to cut into the advantage.

Despite being down, the Ticats moved the ball relatively well in the second half with Masoli leaning on Saunders and veteran receiver Luke Tasker who consistently found holes in the defence over the middle. On their first drive of the fourth quarter, Masoli worked the clock and got the Ticats into the red zone with completions from the aforementioned pass-catchers but Gainey bailed out the Riders again with his league-leading eighth interception of the season, this one in the endzone.

Even with the turnovers, the Ticats were a different team in the second half, the defence tightening up after the opening drive and keeping their squad in it. With just over two minutes remaining, Masoli went to work at midfield after a solid retun by SB Brandon Banks. Despite getting inside the Riders 35-yardline, Saskatchewan’s defence held tough and forced a turnover on downs with 90 seconds remaining.

A quick two-and-out by the Riders gave the Ticats one last shot and Masoli aired it out with 11 seconds left to Banks who was interfered with. The Ticats scrimmaged from the 1-yard line with five seconds remaining but elected to pass the football and a pass to Saunders fell incomplete to seal the deal for the Riders.

After dropping last week’s contest to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Riders will look to build some momentum off this win when they return home to host the league-leading Calgary Stampeders. It is unknown if Bridge will continue under centre.

The Ticats, meanwhile, head west to take on the BC Lions in Vancouver.

RECAP
WILDER JR.’S BIG PERFORMANCE LEADS WAY IN WIN AGAINST ESKS

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts snapped a two-game losing streak in impressive fashion on Saturday, racking up 457 yards in total offence in a 34-26 victory against the Edmonton Eskimos at BMO Field.

Argonauts running back James Wilder Jr. had a career day, leading his team in both rushing and receiving while accumulating 257 total yards and a touchdown. Wilder finished the game with 67 yards receiving and 190 yards on the ground, becoming the first Argonaut running back to rush for more than 150 yards in a game since 2010.

Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly also had a big performance on the day, throwing for 323 yards and two touchdowns in an offensive shootout that went down to the final minutes.

It did not take long for the game’s first big play to strike, as Eskimos defensive lineman Euclid Cummings stripped the ball from Toronto’s Ricky Ray on just the second play from scrimmage. The fumble was quickly recovered by Eskimos defensive tackle Almondo Sewell, and the Green and Gold took over with excellent field position inside Toronto’s 30-yard line.

The Edmonton offence capitalized on the ensuing drive, with running back Travon Van finding the end zone on a 12-yard run up the middle. Dynamic receiver Derel Walker set up the score with a 13-yard catch and run. The touchdown run was Van’s first offensive touch since returning from injury.

Ray and the Argos’ offence began to rebound from their early turnover on the next drive, with Wilder gaining a hard-earned first down after catching a short pass out of the backfield. Wilder continued to show his versatility a couple plays later, lunging for another first down after taking a reception for 10 yards. The following play appeared to go for a touchdown after Argonauts fullback Declan Cross took a quick screen pass for a 52-yard score, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.

The Argonauts continued to create momentum after the penalty, as receiver S.J. Green began to get involved on offence. Green’s 6-yard catch set up the Argos’ offence inside Edmonton’s 20-yard line, and Green drew a crucial pass interference call a couple plays later while attempting to get open in the end zone.

Toronto did not waste time capitalizing on the field position, and they fooled the Eskimos’ defence by loading up the backfield and running a play-action pass to the right with backup quarterback Cody Fajardo. The Argonauts quarterback rolled out to the right and found Green for the two-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7 points apiece. The scoring play was Fajardo’s first touchdown toss of the season and Green’s sixth touchdown of the season.

Wilder continued to play a big role after Toronto’s defence forced a quick punt. The 6-foot-2, 232-pound running back put together back to back 11-yard runs as time expired in the opening quarter. The bruising runner then caught back to back passes for 16 and 11 yards, setting up Toronto’s offence with excellent field position.

Ray threw a beautiful pass on the next play, dropping the ball in perfectly past two Edmonton defenders for a three-yard touchdown to receiver Armanti Edwards. The touchdown was Edwards’ third as a member of the Argos, and the 314th touchdown pass in Ray’s CFL career.

Edmonton answered back quickly on their next offensive series, with Reilly leading his unit down the field on a four-play 77-yard scoring drive. Reilly connected with multiple receivers on the drive, finding receivers Adarius Bowman and Derel Walker for big chunks of yardage before hitting Brandon Zylstra for a huge 46-yard touchdown deep down the right sideline.

Wilder and the Argos’ rushing attack continued to dominate after the Edmonton score, putting Toronto back on top 21-14 after an electrifying 76-yard touchdown run. Wilder went virtually untouched as he sped down the middle of the field towards daylight for his first career CFL touchdown. Wilder racked up an incredible 167 total yards in the first half alone.

Argonauts kicker Lirim Hajrullahu added a 27-yard field goal on the next possession to extend the lead to 24-14.

The big plays kept coming for the Argonauts after that, with Ray and Edwards connecting for one of the most impressive plays of the afternoon. Ray threw a deep pass from inside his own end zone, and Edwards jumped up and adjusted beautifully to reel in the 34-yard reception while somehow staying in bounds down the left sideline.

The Eskimos’ offence came out firing in the second half, putting together a mix of run and pass plays while making their way down the field. But Edmonton’s drive fell short after a kicker Hugh O’Neill missed a 41-yard field goal, sending the ball out of bounds for a single to bring the score to 24-15.

It was the next Edmonton field goal attempt that resulted in the biggest play of the game, however. O’Neill missed a field goal to the left, and the ball ended up in the waiting hands of Argonauts running back Martese Jackson. Jackson then put on a show for the home fans, taking the ball all the way from one end zone to the other for a 125-yard return touchdown, helping put Toronto up 31-15. The highlight-reel play was Toronto’s first missed field goal returned for a touchdown since Chad Owens accomplished the feat in 2013.

Toronto’s formidable rushing attack kept rolling as the fourth quarter of action got underway. Wilder continued to look unstoppable, putting together rushes of 46 and 22 yards on back to back plays. The Argonauts extended their lead as a result, with Hajrullahu knocking through a 26-yard field goal to bring the score to 34-15.

Reilly and the Eskimos’ offence began to get things going down the stretch, as the quarterback connected with Walker for a pivotal 37-yard completion. Walker added another catch for 18 yards before Reilly found Van for the eight-yard touchdown pass. Reilly connected with Walker again for the successful two-point convert, bringing the score to 34-23.

Edmonton appeared to gain even more ground on the Toronto lead when receiver Duke Williams secured a remarkable catch in the end zone with under five minutes left to play. But upon further review, it was ruled that Williams committed offensive pass interference. The penalty ended up being significant, as the Eskimos were forced to settle for a 21-yard field goal to bring the score to 34-26.

The final comeback attempt for Edmonton began with a spark after Reilly threw a deep bomb to receiver Bryant Mitchell for 60 yards, putting the Eskimos’ offence in scoring position with just under two minutes remaining.

But in a game filled with offensive highlights, it was the Argos’ defence that stepped up in crunch time. As Reilly attempted to find an open target in the end zone, Argonauts defensive back Matt Black blitzed up the middle and dropped the Edmonton quarterback for a loss of six yards.

The Argonauts will host the CFL East rival Montreal Alouettes next Saturday, while the Eskimos will take a week off before trying to snap their five-game losing streak on Sept. 30 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
