RIDERS RUN OVER REDBLACKS TO ADVANCE TO TORONTO

OTTAWA — Marcus Thigpen scored on a 75-yard touchdown run while quarterback Kevin Glenn was nearly perfect, leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 31-20 win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the Eastern Semi-Final.

The Riders scored three first-half touchdowns and racked up nearly 500 yards of offence, quieting a sellout crowd of 24,107 on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Ottawa’s TD Place.

Thigpen, a surprise starter at running back this week with Trent Richardson and Cameron Marshall out, rushed for 169 yards for the Green and White, while Bakari Grant, Vernon Adams Jr. also scored touchdowns for the Riders.

Glenn added six on a QB keeper, building on an 18-for-28, 252-yard performance with one passing touchdown and no interceptions.

Trevor Harris’ first career playoff start ended with a loss, the veteran throwing for more than 400 yards but also turning the ball over twice. Despite the loss, Diontae Spencer was electrifying for the REDBLACKS, hauling in nine passes for 157 yards and a touchdown — although the Ottawa receiver also had a couple slip from his grasp.

With the win, the Riders’ first of the post-season under second-year head coach Chris Jones, puts the Riders into the Eastern Final, where they’ll take on the Toronto Argonauts on Nov. 19.

An early scoring surge kept the fans at the edge of their seats from the start in the nation’s capital, with the first three possessions all going for touchdowns.

It started with a second-down play by the Riders deep in Ottawa territory, on which Bakari Grant was left open on a crossing route with nothing but green turf in front of him. Grant dodged a tackle and ran into the end zone, capping off a six-play, 79-yard scoring drive that needed only 2:29, putting the Riders ahead 7-0 out of the gate.

The REDBLACKS wasted no time responding. One play after William Powell was stuffed on Ottawa’s opening offensive play, Harris took to the air on second-and-long and found Diontae Spencer with a step on the defender, turning his first completion into a 56-yard touchdown.

Harris connected with Criner on the two-point conversion, giving the REDBLACKS an 8-7 lead. The early exchange of touchdowns, which occurred in a matter of 4:07, marked the two fastest touchdowns in CFL playoff history.

And the two offences weren’t done.

Glenn stayed in his early groove, starting the Riders’ second possession with a first-down to Roosevelt before moving the sticks again on a second-and-10 with a swing pass to Kienan LaFrance. On second-and-short, Glenn went back to Carter on the slant, with the Riders’ top receiver using his body to block off the defender and make a play on the ball.

After LaFrance’s catch brought the Riders to the one, the Riders finished things with a one-yard plunge by Glenn, putting the Riders back out in front 14-8 — another one for the record books, with the first three possessions all going for touchdowns for the first time in playoff history.

On the ensuing drive, Harris again found Spencer in single coverage, with the diminutive receiver making an athletic grab along the sidelines to the Saskatchewan 26. But after Spencer helped set up another first down close to the 10, the Riders’ opportunistic defence struck for the first time in the post-season. Jumping the route was WILL linebacker Samuel Eguavoen, intercepting Harris’ pass and ending the scoring threat immediately.

That quieted things down as the Riders were forced to punt while the clock expired on the opening 15 minutes.

The Riders got things moving again with six minutes left in the half when Glenn connected on a 47-yard gain to Bakari Grant, who was finally pushed out of bounds at the eight. Vernon Adams Jr. needed two tries to eventually find the end zone, just getting across the line on his second effort to make it 21-8.

A short-yardage mishap caused the second turnover of the game, a fumble by Ryan Lindley that the Riders recovered near their own 30, but that was it for an otherwise-eventful first half as the teams headed for the tunnel.

After a clean first 30 minutes, the Riders’ first turnover of the afternoon provided a major potential spark for the home team. Christion Jones had the ball punched loose by Keelan Johnson, giving Ottawa possession inside the 20. But the Riders’ defence closed the door on any major momentum swing, forcing a two-and-out and the first field goal of the game from Brett Maher.

The missed opportunity would prove costly for the REDBLACKS, because a couple of plays later, Thigpen found a hole and out-ran the entire Ottawa defence for a 75-yard touchdown, extending the visitors’ lead to 28-11.

Maher’s second field goal of the game, this one from 29 yards out, cut Ottawa’s deficit to 28-14.

At the end of the third, the Riders got it back when a long return by Jones — after a pitch from Chad Owens — set up Tyler Crapigna‘s first three-pointer of the afternoon.

The Riders had rolled up 419 yards of offence through three quarters, taking a three-score lead, 31-14, to the fourth quarter. That would last through most of the remaining game.

The nail in the coffin may have come soon after. With the ball at their own 50 and no momentum in sight, the REDBLACKS looked for a spark in the form of a big gamble on third-and-10. On third down, Harris threw up a 50-50 ball for Juron Criner that was intercepted by Jovon Johnson — the third interception of the game for the Riders’ defence.

The REDBLACKS cut their deficit to two scores when Harris and Criner finally connected in the end zone just inside the two-minute mark, making it a 31-20 ballgame.

Maher’s ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by Riders defensive back and special-teamer Jeff Hecht.

The result ends Ottawa’s three-game winning streak going into the post-season, extending Saskatchewan’s run to nine wins over the last 13 games.

ESKS PUT SECOND HALF FREEZE ON BOMBERS EN ROUTE TO 39-32 WIN

WINNIPEG – Mike Reilly passed for 334 yards and Adarius Bowman hauled in a pair of touchdown catches as the Edmonton Eskimos topped the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 39-32 at Investors Group Field Sunday in the 2017 Western Semi-Final.

A monster second half from Reilly helped Edmonton take control early in the third frame and didn’t look back.

Receiver Brandon Zylstra led all receivers with 145 yards receiving and was balanced out by a 107-yard day by tailback CJ Gable on the ground.

The man at the centrepiece of the talk all week was Winnipeg QB Matt Nicols who has been hampered since Week 19 with a left calf injury. The ‘will he, won’t he’ narrative followed the Bombers team all week until it was made official Saturday afternoon that the Bombers’ star pivot would indeed get the call.

The Eskimos were returning to the site of their 2015 Grey Cup win, looking to top the only team that hadn’t beat all year and riding a five-game winning streak.

Reilly entered the contest as the league’s hottest pivot and it took little time for him to silence a boisterous Winnipeg crowd.

On the Eskimos’ first possession of the game, Reilly calmly went 6 for 7 on an 84-yard touchdown drive which was capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass to Adarius Bowman. After Brandon Zylstra made three first down receptions, Bowman found a spot in behind coverage and was all alone at the back of the end zone for the early pitch-and-catch.

After starting the year slow and running into injury problems, Bowman now has four touchdowns in as many games.

Looking to answer and regain momentum, the Bombers took to the ground to help get themselves into Edmonton territory. A pair of first down runs by Andrew Harris and Timothy Flanders respectively, complemented a set of QB options with Dan LeFevour spelling Nichols.

The would have to settle for a 20-yard Justin Medlock field goal to make the score 7-3 in favour of the Esks.

Any question of Nichols’ health was put to rest on Winnipeg’s third possession when the former Eskimo pivot stepped into a 38-yard throw to WR Matt Coates as part of an 8-play, 90-yard scoring drive. The possession featured three first down receptions by WR Weston Dressler and a 5-yard touchdown reception by WR L’Damien Washington on a curl route which sent an amped up Investors Group into a frenzy.

The Esks responded with a 26-yard pass from Reilly to Zylstra to set up a 28-yard Sean Whyte field goal to square the game up at 10.

The two defences would hunker down, each registering a sack as the teams headed to halftime.

The third quarter began with both defensive lines applying pressure but the next big opportunity came at the 11:49 mark when the Eskimos special teams stepped up to get the game’s first turnover.

On third-and-three, the Bombers faked a punt and direct snapped to Flanders who took the carry off the right side of the formation but was stopped short by Eskimos SB Cory Watson, giving Edmonton instant field position at the Winnipeg 39-yard line.

Reilly made no mistake in making the Bombers pay for their gamble, finding Derel Walker in the flat for a 10-yard gain before handing the ball off to RB CJ Gable. Gable got his pad level low and powered his way through a set of Bomber defenders for a 15-yard touchdown and a 17-10 third quarter lead.

The Bombers salvaged the gamble slightly by answering with a Medlock 38-yard field goal after a 50-yard drive to cut the Eskimo lead down to four.

The Esks would answer almost immediately and did so on the strength of the Reilly-Zylstra connection. Reilly stepped into a pass down the short side of the field and Zylstra leaped up in double coverage to snag a 43-yard ball to set the Esks up at the Bomber 32. Two plays later Zylstra would find a soft spot over the middle of the Bombers defence, turn up field and enter the endzone untouched for the 13-yard score.

Medlock would respond with a 47-yarder to make a dent into the Eskimos lead but the Green and Gold took a 9-point advantage to the fourth quarter.

Looking to take control of the game, Reilly and Bowman sent the Bombers to the brink. Bowman ran a corner route against zone coverage and was spotted all alone for the 42-yard touchdown to take a 32-16 lead.

Shortly thereafter the Eskimos put the game entirely out of reach. A forced fumble and recovery at midfield set up Gable for a 30-yard romp and then a 15-yard touchdown scamper to grab a commanding 39-16 lead with 11:19 remaining.

The Bombers wouldn’t go down easily however as a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nichols to Dressler (along with a two-point conversion) with just over seven minutes remaining cut the Eskimo advantage to 15 points.

Edmonton will head to Calgary to take on the Stampeders in the Western Final on November 19 at McMahon Stadium.

Saskatchewan pulled off a 31-20 upset against Ottawa as a 2 ½-point road underdog in the East and Edmonton added another victory for the road team in its 39-32 win against Winnipeg in the West as a three-point favorite.

Game Overview

The Roughriders return to the postseason was on the heels of a straight-up 4-2 run in their final six games to secure a crossover position in the playoffs. They are now just one win away from a spot in the Grey Cup Final after getting past Ottawa on the road last Sunday. Saskatchewan is 6-4 against the spread on the road this season and it has gone 7-4 ATS when closing as an underdog. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of its last nine games.

In last Sunday’s victory at Ottawa, Kevin Glenn played one of his most complete games of the season as the Roughriders’ quarterback. He connected on 18 of his 28 passing attempts for 252 yards and a score against zero turnovers, while Marcus Thigpen racked-up 169 yards and a score on the ground on 15 carries. Saskatchewan averaged 28.3 points per game in the regular season.

Toronto needed a victory against British Columbia on the road as a two-point favorite in its final regular season game to clinch the East Division title. The Argonauts came through in a big way by trouncing the Lions 40-13. They went 5-2 both straight-up and against the spread in their last seven games with the total going OVER or ending as a PUSH in each of those contests. They are 4-5 ATS in nine previous home games this season.

Veteran quarterback Ricky Ray was one of the most prolific passers in the CFL this season with 5,546 yards and 28 touchdown throws against 11 interceptions. He completed an impressive 70.1 percent of his 668 passing attempts for an average of 8.3 yards a reception. His top target was SJ Green with 1,462 receiving yards and 11 scores while James Wilder led the ground game with 872 rushing yards.

Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has covered in four of its last five games against Toronto and it has gone 5-1 ATS in its last six road games against the Argonauts. The Roughriders swept the season series both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER 52 in a 27-24 road win at Toronto as two-point underdogs on Oct. 7.

Game Overview

The peaks and valleys of Edmonton’s 2017 season have been a bit extreme with a seven-game winning streak followed by six losses in a row. The Eskimos are definitely headed in the right direction at the right time of the year with a SU six-game winning streak while going 5-1 ATS. The total went OVER 55 points in Sunday’s win at Winnipeg and it has gone OVER in four of the Eskimos’ last six games.

Mike Reilly has been at the top of the list in the CFL all year long when it comes to moving the ball down the field through the air after ending the regular season with a CFL-high 5,830 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes on 447 completions. In Sunday’s division semifinal, he lit up the Bombers with 334 yards passing and three scoring strikes including a pair to wide receiver Adarius Bowman. Brandon Zylstra led the way with eight receptions for 156 yards and a score.

After dominating play for most of the season, there has to be some concern with Calgary’s three-game losing streak (SU and ATS) to close out the regular season. After failing to cover in a tight three-point win against Edmonton on Sept. 9 as six-point road favorites, the Stampeders are just 3-5 ATS over their last eight games. The total stayed UNDER in six of those eight outings. Calgary is 6-3 ATS on its home field this year.

The week off should hopefully help to get things back in order for Bo Levi Mitchell and a Stampeders’ offense that was second in the CFL in points scored (523). This unit was averaging 32.7 points per game before posting a combined 32 points in its last three contests. Mitchell was third in the CFL in passing yards (4,700) and he tossed 23 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Jerome Messam was third in the league in rushing with 1,016 yards on 215 carries.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has won 13 of the last 19 meetings in this bitter West Division rivalry and it has a 5-1 edge ATS in its last six home games against the Eskimos. The Stampeders had the 2-1 SU edge in the season series, but Edmonton went 2-1 ATS. The total stayed UNDER in two of the three games.
