CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
September 26, 2017

Last weekend’s betting action in the CFL started with Winnipeg’s 29-9 victory against Ottawa as an 8 ½-point home favorite. In the backend of Friday night’s doubleheader of games, Hamilton stunned British Columbia 24-23 as a heavy 12 ½-point underdog on the road.

In a big East Division clash on Saturday, Toronto upended Montreal 33-19 as a seven-point home favorite to move into first place in the standings. Week 14 came to a close with Calgary grinding out a 15-9 victory on the road against Saskatchewan as a 5 ½-point favorite to extend its straight-up winning streak to nine games.

Friday, Sept. 29

Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (5-8-1 SU, 9-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
Total: 50

Game Overview

The Roughriders remain in the thick of the playoff hunt despite Sunday’s loss, but they are going to have to find a way to get their offense back in gear down the stretch run of the regular season. Kevin Glenn was back in the lineup at quarterback against Calgary after missing some time due to injury, but he ended the game completing just 12 of his 19 passes for 127 yards. He left the game in the second half with an injured hand. Saskatchewan’s ground game did not help the cause with 28 yards on 12 carries.

Ottawa fell out of first place in the East with its second loss in three games both SU and against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in its last seven games. Last Friday’s loss was the first time that the RedBlacks failed to post at least 20 points in a game this season. Ryan Lindley got the start at quarterback for an injured Trevor Harris and he completed just 44.4 percent of his 36 passing attempts for 151 yards.

Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has won four of the last six meetings SU with the series tied at 3-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last three games in this inter-division tilt.

Montreal Alouettes (3-10 SU, 4-9 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (11-1-1 SU, 8-4-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -17.5
Total: 49

Game Overview

Montreal will have a tall task on its hands this Friday night to try and stop its current six-game skid both SU and ATS. The Alouettes have posted just one SU victory in their last nine games while going a costly 2-7 ATS. In last week’s loss to Toronto, their defense held Ricky Ray to 182 yards passing, but it gave up 141 yards to James Wilder running the ball. Montreal quarterback Darian Durant was picked off three times in that game.

Calgary proved it can win ugly if it has to after averaging 32.9 points in the first eight wins of its current streak. Bo Levi Mitchell went an efficient 24-for-32 against Saskatchewan on Sunday for 222 passing yards and Jerome Messam extended his league-leading rushing total to 897 yards with 127 yards on 23 carries for an average of 5.5 yards a run. The Stampeders also lead the league in points allowed; giving up an average of 17.8 points a game.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal actually won the first meeting this season on July 14 in a 30-23 victory as a four-point home underdog. The Alouettes are 4-2 SU in the last six meetings with a perfect 6-0 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last nine games in this inter-division matchup.

Saturday, Sept. 30

Toronto Argonauts (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-9 SU, 5-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Toronto -3
Total: 51.5

Game Overview

Toronto has a chance to move to .500 on the year this week after winning three of its last five games both SU and ATS. One of those losses came against Hamilton on the road in early September in a tight 24-22 setback as a three-point favorite. The Argonauts showed some solid balance on offense last week throwing and running the ball. Heading into Week 15, Ray is ranked second in passing yards (3,749) and Wilder is sixth in total rushing yards (503).

The Tigers-Cats have won three of their last four games SU and ATS after losing their first eight games of the year. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in their last six outings. While Hamilton has struggled to consistently put points on the board this season as the lowest scoring team in the CFL, credit the recent play of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli for helping to turn things around the past few weeks.

Betting Trends

-- The home team in this East Division rivalry has won the last four meetings both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in the last three games. Hamilton has a 7-2 edge in the last nine meetings (SU and ATS).

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (7-5 SU, 4-8 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -2
Total: 60

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have done a good job at trying to keep pace with Calgary in the West during an impressive 7-1 SU run over their last eight games. They are 6-1 ATS in their last seven outings and the total has gone OVER in nine of their 12 games this season behind an offense that is averaging 34.1 points per game. Defensively, Winnipeg has allowed an average of 29.4 PPG.

Edmonton could not have asked for a better week for a bye following a SU five-game losing streak while going 1-4 ATS. The slide started on Aug. 17 after posting a perfect 7-0 SU start with a 33-26 loss to Winnipeg on the road in a game that closed as a PICK. Quarterback Mike Reilly still leads the CFL in passing yards (3,949) and he has tossed 20 touchdown throws, but the loss of wide receiver Weston Dressler has not helped the cause. He is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton still has an SU 8-2 edge in the last 10 meetings while going 7-3 ATS. The total went OVER 57 ½ points in the first meeting this season and it has gone OVER in three of the last five games in this West Division matchup.

PREVIEW
RIDERS HEAD EAST FOR CAPITAL CLASH WITH REDBLACKS

OTTAWA — To say there is a lot at stake in Friday’s meeting in the nation’s capital between the Ottawa REDBLACKS and Saskatchewan Roughriders would be a massive understatement.

Entering their Week 15 matchup — their first of 2017 — both the Riders (6-6) and REDBLACKS (5-8-1) are in the thick of serious playoff battles. Were the season to end today, in fact, Saskatchewan would actually be the crossover team and fly to Ottawa to play the Eastern Semi-Final against the REDBLACKS.

Plenty is still to-be-determined, of course: Chris Jones’s Riders still have six games left and sit just two points behind third-place Edmonton, while Rick Campbell’s REDBLACKS are still within shouting distance of first and third place.

The two squads will meet at TD Place in the first game of Week 15’s Friday Night Football doubleheader at 7 p.m. ET.

The major news out of Regina this week was the signing of international running back Trent Richardson, and though the former Indianapolis Colt and Cleveland Brown will not play in Ottawa this weekend, much of the media attention focused on his signing.

“If you’ve got a gas stove and that pilot goes out, you’ve got to get down on your knees and light that pilot back up,” Richardson told Riderville.com’s Ian Hamilton. “That’s what I had to do. I had to rewrite my book and I just had to start over.”

Riders head coach Chris Jones lauded his new signing’s ability.

“He’s a guy that’s a good football player,” said Jones. “He’s a pretty good athlete, (and) from the videos we got of him in Alabama, he’s in tremendous shape.”

The Saskatchewan boss also insisted that Richardson won’t be rushed into game action, stating that the 27-year-old won’t see the field “until he knows his blocking.”

Veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn will return under centre for the Riders on Friday after being lifted in the fourth quarter of their Week 14 loss to Calgary.

“I think we’re on the right track,” said the 38-year-old veteran, who was an underwhelming 12-for-19 for 121 yards and an interception in the defeat. “We’re on the right track to where we know that we still have control of where we want to go.”

He has a point: The Riders are currently in a playoff spot, something that appeared unlikely following a 1-3 start to the season.

“If we take care of our business the last third of the season, then we’ll be all right,” continued Glenn. “We’ll put ourselves in that position that we wanted to at the beginning of the year.”

With a two-game road trip with stops in Ottawa and Toronto ahead of them, the Riders will look to foster some second-half team bonding according to national receiver Rob Bagg.

“I feel like it’s a great opportunity to bond with the guys,” said Bagg, a Queen’s alum. “You’re around them more — when you’re on the road in the hotel, there’s not much else to do other than go out for food and just chill.”

The news around REDBLACKS camp all week centred around the man under centre.

Following Ryan Lindley’s subpar 16-for-36 debut, much was made of Trevor Harris and Drew Tate‘s presence on the practice field.

Ultimately, however, Lindley will get the ball again.

The REDBLACKS and their coaching staff understand just how critical the team’s final four games will be.

“Every game from here on out is huge,” Head Coach Rick Campbell told OttawaREDBLACKS.com. “Saskatchewan, BC, Saskatchewan — we’re all competing for playoff spots, so we’re going to field whatever our best possible team is each week.”

Lindley admitted that, in just his second week as QB-1, there are still kinks to be ironed out.

“There’s still guys whose body language on routes and stuff that I’m still figuring out, but we’ll get it together,” said the former Arizona Cardinal. “Like everything, you see the film (from Winnipeg loss) and it’s not as bad as you thought it was.”

In preparation for his second CFL start, the bearded giant waxed poetic about football.

“I’m excited to get back out there on Friday and let ‘er rip — football’s a fluid game, you can’t put it on paper and say ‘run it like this, throw it like this,'” said Lindley. “There’s always 12 other guys that are trying to stop you from doing what you have to do.”

For backup Drew Tate, returning to reasonable functionality this week after a crunching hit in Montreal two weeks ago, there are also issues to deal with.

“This isn’t basketball or baseball, where you can kind of jump in,” explained Tate. “Timing is a big factor in football, especially in the pro game where routes and the playbook are changing every week, (and) that’s what I’m kind of fighting with right now.”

By The Numbers

0 — Of the three quarterbacks to start for either team in their two 2016 meetings will be in the lineup (SSK: Darian Durant, Mitchell Gale | OTT: Trevor Harris)

6 — Wins in as many games for Chris Jones against the REDBLACKS.

11 — Weeks between byes for the REDBLACKS, whose last one was in Week 6 and next one isn’t until Week 18. Talk about a tough stretch.

36 — Offensive touchdowns for Saskatchewan this season, the most in the CFL and a remarkable turnaround from their league-worst 27 in all of 2016.

The Skinny

Saskatchewan is in a dead-heat for the final playoff berths in the West, while Ottawa is looking to bounce back from an abysmal performance in the Week 14 rain in Winnipeg.

Kevin Glenn needs a strong outing to hold off Brandon Bridge as the team’s starting quarterback.

Can Ryan Lindley bounce back from a forgettable first CFL start? Will William Powell rush for his third-straight 100-yard game?

Now that is a finger-lickin’ good matchup.

Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET and can be followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker and seen on TSN and ESPN3.

PREVIEW
ALS LOOK TO BREAK THE TREND IN VISIT TO MCMAHON

CALGARY — With a playoff spot already clinched, the first-place Calgary Stampeders will now turn their attention to the task of leaving Winnipeg — currently five points behind them, with a game in-hand — in the dust.

That goal continues in the nightcap of Week 15’s Friday Night Football doubleheader, which will pit Dave Dickenson’s Stamps against the Montreal Alouettes.

On paper, the matchup favours the Stampeders, who haven’t dropped points since Week 4 while Montreal hasn’t won a game since Week 8. The Stamps are the league’s top defence (17.7 points allowed per-game); the Alouettes are the league’s worst offence (19.3 points per game).

Compounding the Alouettes’ woes as they head to the toughest stadium in the CFL is the absence of the leading receiver Nik Lewis, who will miss out on his return to Calgary due to injury.

News broke late in the week that star Stamps running back Jerome Messam will also miss Friday’s contest with an injury.

The Montreal Alouettes are struggling.

Kavis Reed’s Als have lost six in a row and eight of their last nine, plummeting to the bottom of the East Division in the process. Darian Durant has been unable to right the ship — Drew Willy will get his turn this week — and Montreal has simply been played off the field in recent weeks.

Montreal is the fourth stop in seven CFL seasons for the 30-year-old Willy, who is relishing the chance to face one of the league’s best defences in a hostile environment.

“It’s a great opportunity, and I’m going to enjoy being out there on the football field tomorrow,” Willy told MontrealAlouettes.com. “Learning a new offence was a little difficult at first, but being a vet in the league, you pick up different things quickly.”

The Buffalo alum joined the Als following limited action in 2016 with the Toronto Argonauts.

“Lots of things are run the same (and) just called different (with) different teams — when you get the protections and calls down, it gets easier,” explained Willy. “Coach (Anthony) Calvillo’s been a huge help, (doing) before-the-meeting kind of work with me.”

Despite his team’s mid-season woes, Als GM/head coach Kavis Reed insists that his team has the tools to have success on Friday night in Cowtown.

“The thing I tell our players is that, albeit the records don’t reflect it, that there’s parity in this league,” explained Reed. “When you go out and execute over the course of the game, even against a team like Calgary, you’re going to have a chance.”

The Montreal head honcho highlighted discipline as one of his team’s issues.

“For us, it’s been a matter of self-destructing (and) not executing well,” said Reed. “When this football team plays its disciplined A-game, we can compete with anyone.”

Friday’s visitors will be boosted by the return of fullback J.C. Beaulieu; the 27 year-old out of Sherbrooke hasn’t dressed since Week 8.

“I feel good, physically I’m in good shape and mentally I just have to find the speed of the game (again),” said Beaulieu. “We have to establish a good ground game (and) have quality passes — if everybody takes care of their assignments, we should have a good game.”

Montreal centre Luc Brodeur-Jourdain is expected to dress for his 150th CFL game on Friday.

The main headline out of Stampeders camp this week is the news that Dave Dickenson’s squad will be without powerhouse running back Jerome Messam against Montreal.

“He’s had a few weeks where we weren’t sure if he was going to play,” Dickenson told Stampeders.com on the status of Messam. “(With a) five-day week and the workload he had last week, he just wasn’t able to respond.”

Terry Williams, a 25-year-old unknown out of Kutztown University, will start in Messam’s place and hope to emulate Calgary’s regular ball-carriers.

“I try to do whatever the defence gives me,” explained Williams. “If I have to get those two or three yards inside, I’ll try to run it like Jerome Messam — when I bounce it outside, I try to be a little bit of Roy Finch.”

Williams’s first start comes after a significant adjustment period to the pro game in which Calgary’s staff sought to better his blocking.

“In college, they always gave me the ball (and) never really asked me to block much,” explained Williams. “Here it’s more team-oriented, so now I just have to do my assignment, block for receivers (and) do what I have to do.”

Receiver DaVaris Daniels also remains shelved on the injured list, so expect Reggie Begelton to continue to see the ball in his absence: The rookie out of Lamar University has had at least four catches and 50-plus yards in each of his last two outings.

D-end Ja’Gared Davis will look to build on his monstrous three-sack, one-forced-fumble performance against Saskatchewan last week; the 27-year-old Texan has already matched his sack total from 2016 (7) in just seven contests this season. The powerful line presence also told media that he will be spending his bye week in Texas, helping out with hurricane relief efforts.

By The Numbers

0 — Wins in six tries away from home this season for the Alouettes.

2 — Of Dave Dickenson’s three career losses as a coach (record: 26-3-2) have come against Montreal.

81.0 — QUAR rating for Bo Levi Mitchell, 3rd-best in the CFL yet somehow un-Bo-like.

231 — League-low points allowed by the Stamps. Next closest: Saskatchewan (309, 78-pt difference).

The Skinny

It is so do-or-die time for the Montreal Alouettes.

It is also not the time to let up, if you’re the Calgary Stampeders: Bo Levi Mitchell and co. have something to prove after a subpar day against Saskatchewan last week, and Winnipeg could be breathing down their necks if they slip up.

On paper: This one shouldn’t even be close.

In reality: This is the CFL, the place where unanticipated things happen — especially as the temperatures drop and the leaves start to change, as the Stamps know all too well from last season.

Kickoff is slated for 9:30 p.m. ET and can be followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker and seen on TSN and ESPN2.

RECAP
GLENN RECORDS 100TH WIN IN COMEBACK VICTORY AGAINST REDBLACKS

OTTAWA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders completed a remarkable fourth quarter comeback to hand the Ottawa REDBLACKS a 18-17 defeat at TD Place Stadium on Friday. Ottawa controlled momentum for most of the game and shut out the Riders in the first half, but quarterback Kevin Glenn turned things around and found success in the fourth quarter to claim his 100th career win.

Running back William Powell led the way for Ottawa with 187 yards on the ground, setting a REDBLACKS franchise record for most rushing yards in a single game.

REDBLACKS Quarterback Ryan Lindley showed improved poise in his second career start, but the Riders’ defence came on strong in the end and defensive back Jovon Johnson sealed the game with an interception in the final minute.

Both defensive units came out strong in the first quarter. Roughriders quarterback Kevin Glenn attempted to find receiver Duron Carter in the end zone on the team’s opening drive, but REDBLACKS defensive back Jonathan Rose made a beautiful play on the ball and reeled in his first interception of the season.

With quarterback Ryan Lindley making just his second start, the REDBLACKS leaned on the legs of running back William Powell for most of the game. The quick and powerful runner got the ball moving for Ottawa on their second drive, putting together back-to-back first down runs of 32 and 16 yards. Powell also caught a key pass on the drive that set up a short Lindley first down run.

The REDBLACKS got on the scoreboard first as a result, with kicker Brett Maher knocking through a 22-yard field goal to give Ottawa the early 3-0 lead. Powell amassed 111 rushing yards in the first half alone.

Roughriders receiver Bakari Grant appeared to fumble on Saskatchewan’s next drive, with Ottawa recovering. But the play was not ruled a fumble, and REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell unsuccessfully challenged the ruling that Grant’s forward progress had been stopped.

Lindley began to find a rhythm in the second quarter, and his first big completion of the game came when he connected with receiver Brad Sinopoli for 26 yards. The REDBLACKS quarterback then found receiver Diontae Spencer for a 13-yard first down, and Sinopoli again for a crucial second down conversion.

Lindley capped off the successful second quarter drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to receiver Greg Ellingson near the back left corner of the end zone. Lindley showed impressive touch on the scoring strike, placing the ball directly over defensive back Ed Gainey to give Ellingson his eighth touchdown catch of the season. Powell added the two-point convert on the ground to give Ottawa the 11-0 lead.

After quickly getting the ball back on defence, the REDBLACKS’ offence picked up right where they left off. Powell continued to make brilliant cut backs while consistently gaining big chunks of yardage to keep Ottawa’s offence moving down the field. The Riders’ defence stood strong, however, and were able to prevent Lindley from leading another touchdown drive before the half.

The REDBLACKS’ offence continued to look impressive on their first drive of the third quarter, with Lindley and Powell leading a balanced attack that gave the Riders’ defence issues. Powell seemed to find open field every time he carried the ball, dragging tacklers for extra yards and moving the chains.

Lindley finished the nine-play, 65-yard drive with a short rushing touchdown after Powell took the ball all the way to the goal line, giving Ottawa a 17-0 lead.

The Riders found a major spark near the end of the third quarter when Christion Jones returned a punt up the middle for an incredible 97-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 17-7.

Saskatchewan built on the momentum from the return touchdown when defensive back Jovon Johnson recovered a fumble from REDBLACKS receiver Juron Criner on the next series. The Riders’ offence made the most of the turnover, with Glenn hooking up with Duron Carter for big gains of 21 and 43 yards.

Glenn threw the ball up high in order to give Carter a chance at the jump ball, and Carter beat his man and reeled both passes in using his elite size and athleticism. Running back Kienan LaFrance capped off the pivotal drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 17-14 with under 10 minutes remaining.

Glenn and the Riders continued to find success moving the ball after that, and Saskatchewan tied the game on a 16-yard Tyler Crapigna field goal. The veteran quarterback led a comeback drive in the final minutes, and the Riders took their first lead of the game when they recorded a single after a 55-yard Josh Bartel punt.

The Riders’ defence forced multiple two-and-outs in the game’s final minutes, and Jovon Johnson made another critical play when he picked off a Lindley pass with seconds remaining to secure the victory for Saskatchewan.

Week 16 will see the Saskatchewan Roughriders travel to Toronto to face the Argonauts on Saturday, while the Ottawa REDBLACKS square off against the BC Lions.

MCMAHON MAGIC: STAMPS WIN 17TH STRAIGHT AT HOME AGAINST ALS

CALGARY — Can anyone stop the surging Stamps?

The Calgary Stampeders cruised to their 10th straight victory with a dominant 59-11 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

Terry Williams scored a hat trick of the touchdown variety, racking up three majors and 156 yards on 16 carries. It was the 25 year old’s first CFL start, replacing the injured Jerome Messam.

Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 14 of 19 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns before being rested midway through the third quarter.

The victory was Calgary’s 17th straight at home.

The game was never in question as the Stamps were in control from start to finish.

On the opening kickoff, Rene Paredes booted the ball 83 yards, and the Als opted to take a knee in the end zone to concede the single. It was the first time in seven games that the Als managed to get on the board in any capacity during the first quarter.

The narrow lead did not last for long. Paredes notched a 32-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to put the Stamps up 3-1.

Calgary extended their lead before the end of the quarter. The Als were called for pass interference in the end zone on first and goal for the Stamps, moving Calgary just outside of the goal line. After two unsuccessful attempts, the third time was the charm as Terry Williams punched into the end zone for the short major.

A two point convert attempt was initially deemed unsuccessful, but after the play was reviewed, it was ruled that Marquay McDaniel scooped up the ball before it hit the ground to give the Stamps an 11-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Als continued to temporarily stick around as Drew Willy moved the sticks with short passes downfield. Bede capped off the drive with a 28-yard field goal to make it a one score game.

Calgary’s offence continued to roll in the second quarter when Mitchell found Marken Michel in stride near the left sideline. The play set the Stamps up at Montreal’s 35 yard line. Three plays later, Mitchell found Anthony Parker alone in the end zone for the Stamps’ second touchdown of the half.

Paredes split the uprights twice midway through the quarter, the first from 42 yards out and the second from 45 yards, to give the Stamps a 21-4 lead.

Calgary wasn’t done there before the quarter was up. Mitchell tossed a perfectly placed ball to McDaniel while in stride for a 49-yard gain. Williams recorded his second touchdown of the night when he powered across the plane to extend the lead to 28-4.

The Alouettes showed that they were not going down without a fight. Willy completed a short pass to Tyrell Sutton, who picked up an additional 16 yards after the catch and ran into the end zone for the Als first touchdown of the game.

Paredes notched his third field goal of the quarter during the final seconds of the half to hold a commanding 31-11 lead after 30 minutes.

The good times kept on rolling for the Stamps in the second half.

Midway through the third quarter, Mitchell spotted Rob Cote wide open in the flats. The veteran finished the play by making the easy run to the house to extend the Stamps lead to 30 points.

Stamps rookie Tunde Adeleke put the nail further in the coffin when he returned an Alouette’s punt 51 yards for a return touchdown. It was the Carleton University products’ second punt return touchdown of his young career.

Williams completed the trio of touchdowns with his most impressive major of the game. The Morristown, New Jersey native surged past the entire Alouettes defensive squad and into the end zone for a 45 yard rushing major to cap off his stellar night.

The Stamps have earned some relaxation as they head into their bye week. They return to the field Oct. 13 to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the road. The Alouettes will attempt to halt their seven game losing skid when they return home to take on the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 16.

ARGOS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT IN OVERTIME THRILLER AGAINST TICATS

HAMILTON — The Toronto Argonauts completed an impressive comeback in their 43-35 overtime victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday. Quarterback Ricky Ray led the Argos to their first victory at Tim Hortons Field with 330 passing yards and three touchdown passes on 25 completions.

Receiver DeVier Posey also had a big game for the Double Blue, leading his team with 104 yards receiving and two touchdowns, including the game winning score. And while running back James Wilder Jr. did not have another 100-yard performance, the runner contributed a solid effort with 81 total yards and two key two-point converts.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats looked strong in all three phases of the game, with C.J. Gable showing exactly why he is the Ticats’ starting running back. Gable finished the game with an incredible 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the loss.

The Ticats had two receivers go over 100 yards, with Brandon Banks recording 100 yards and a score on three catches, and Jalen Saunders racking up 121 receiving yards on five catches.

The Argos clinched the season series against Hamilton with the win, and have improved their playoff chances in the East Division with three straight victories.

The Ticats came out flying right away on offence, finding the end zone on their very first passing play of the game. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli found receiver Brandon Banks in space with a short slant pass, and the speedy Banks took care of the rest. Banks took off down the right side of the field behind a couple key blocks for the 58-yard touchdown, giving Hamilton the early 7-0 lead.

Quarterback Ricky Ray got things moving through the air for the Argos on their second drive, taking advantage of the added attention given to red-hot running back James Wilder Jr. But the Ticats’ defence was ready, and a halfback blitz from defensive back Demond Washington caught Ray off guard and knocked the ball loose. Linebacker Simoni Lawrence recovered the fumble for Hamilton.

The Ticats were unable to capitalize on the turnover, however, and the Argos’ special teams stepped up with the first big play of the night for Toronto. Return specialist Martese Jackson caught a punt at the Toronto 18-yard line and took it the distance, outrunning the Ticats’ punt unit for a 92-yard return touchdown. The score was the third punt return touchdown for Jackson this season.

Ticats receiver Andy Fantuz made his season debut against the Argos, having recovered from the knee injury he suffered last season. The veteran pass catcher registered his first reception since October of last season, shaking off the rust as he took a hit over the middle from Argos’ defensive back Matt Black. Fantuz finished the game with three catches.

C.J. Gable got the start at running back for Hamilton, despite Alex Green’s big debut for the Ticats last week against the BC Lions. Gable looked impressive in the first quarter, racking up 41 rushing yards on his first four carries.

Hamilton’s rushing attack appeared to find the end zone at the start of the second quarter, but Masoli had two separate touchdown runs called back. Masoli was ruled down at the half-yard line on the first play, and a holding penalty was called against the Ticats on the second play.

The Ticats were forced to settle for a field goal as a result, with kicker Sergio Castillo making the 35-yard field goal to give Hamilton the 10-7 lead.

Ray was under duress for much of the first half, facing constant pressure every time he dropped back to throw the ball. The Ticats’ pass rush overwhelmed Toronto’s offensive line early on, registering three sacks in the first half alone.

Wilder made his first big play of the game for the Argos with a leaping 18-yard catch near the sidelines. Wilder then broke multiple tackles on a five yard run to set the Toronto offence up in scoring position.

Ray made the most of the field position, hitting receiver Armanti Edwards for the 15-yard touchdown on a beautiful corner route in the left side of the end zone. Wilder gave Ray time to throw on the scoring play by picking up the pass rush in the backfield, giving Toronto the 14-10 lead near the end of the first half.

Gable continued to move the ball on the ground for the Ticats after the Toronto touchdown, averaging nine yards per carry in the first half. Gable’s 16-yard run with under two minutes remaining set up a 19-yard Castillo field goal, bringing the score to 14-13.

The Ticats’ defence stood strong in the final minutes of the half, forcing Toronto to punt the ball. Masoli then put together an efficient drive to take Hamilton down the field in a hurry. Masoli completed big passes to receiver Jalen Saunders for 17 and 30 yard gains, and then found Banks for a 21-yard catch near the Argos’ goal line.

Masoli finished off the impressive drive by hooking up with receiver Luke Tasker for the three-yard touchdown. Tasker also caught the ensuing two-point convert, giving Hamilton the 21-14 lead. The Ticats’ offence went 77 yards in 58 seconds to regain the lead before half.

Hamilton’s defence continued to impress after the half. Ray attempted to find receiver S.J. Green down the field, but the ball was thrown into double coverage and Ticats defensive back Courtney Stephen came down with the interception. But Toronto challenged the call, and it was ruled that the Ticats committed pass interference on the play.

Hamilton got the ball on offence after forcing another Argos punt, but Toronto’s defence stepped up and forced a fumble on Masoli. Argos defensive lineman Justin Tuggle stripped the ball from the Hamilton quarterback, and linebacker Marcus Ball recovered.

The Argos made the most of the turnover, and backup quarterback Cody Fajardo ran the ball in for the one-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21-21.

Gable and the Ticats’ rushing attack continued to win the battle at the line of scrimmage, however, and the talented runner took a carry for 46 yards near the end of the third quarter. Gable found a big hole on the left side and brought the ball all the way to the Toronto three-yard line. Gable score on the following play, finishing off the drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown to give Hamilton the 28-21 lead.

After getting the ball back with strong defensive play, the Ticats’ offence made their way down the field on another scoring drive. Masoli made a big throw to receiver Jalen Saunders for a 38-yard gain, and Banks drew a pass interference call a couple plays later. Gable did the rest after that, finding a hole for another three-yard rushing score to give Hamilton a 14-point lead with just over ten minutes remaining.

The Argos rebounded with a clutch 47-yard field goal from kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, bringing the score to 35-24. Toronto’s defence then forced a pivotal two and out, containing Masoli and the Ticats’ productive running game near the end of the half.

Ray put together a solid drive for the Argos, connecting with fullback Declan Cross for 26 yards, and Green for 17 yards. The Argos added another Hajrullahu field goal as result, bringing the score to 35-27 with under five minutes to play.

The Argos got the ball back on offence and Ray led a comeback drive in the final minute. Receiver DeVier Posey played a major role on the drive, making a crucial third down catch for 31 yards. Posey capped off the drive with a 25-yard receiving touchdown, and Wilder ran in the two-point convert to send the game to overtime.

Toronto received the ball in overtime, and Ray wasted no time moving the ball into scoring position. The veteran passer hooked up with receiver Armanti Edwards for 22 yards before finding Posey in the end zone for the game winning 13-yard touchdown pass. Wilder added another two-point convert on the ground to seal the 43-35 victory.

Week 16 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers next Friday night, while the Toronto Argonauts will look to make it four straight when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders at home next Saturday.

BOMBERS EARN GRITTY 28-19 ROAD WIN IN EDMONTON

EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers put in a solid road effort on Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium, where they handed the hometown Edmonton Eskimos their sixth-straight loss via a 28-19 decision.

The Bombers (10-3) simply made enough key plays to earn the win against Edmonton (7-6); some, like Darvin Adams’s one-handed touchdown grab in the fourth quarter, were spectacular while many others were more workmanlike.

Quarterback Matt Nichols was a steady 24-for-32 under centre for Winnipeg, throwing for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while the Winnipeg defence was stifling at various points on the night. Bombers defensive back Chris Randle secured the win for the visitors with a late pick-six.

Edmonton receiver Brandon Zylstra had a stellar 152-yard night in the losing cause for the tumbling Eskimos.

Both offences struggled in the first quarter, as the Esks and Bombers combined for just 86 net yards.

Winnipeg had a pair of opportunities to open the scoring, but kicker Justin Medlock uncharacteristically missed from 54 (wide left) and 40 yards (wide right). Both were returned out of the end zone by the Eskimos to keep the game scoreless.

The Edmonton defence came up with a number of popping tackles in the second quarter; Aaron Grymes forced a fumble with a rocking hit on Winnipeg’s Julian Feoli-Gudino, then Euclid Cummings blasted Nichols for a sack.

After review, however, Cummings was flagged for a 15-yard head-contact penalty which moved the Bombers into field goal range. Once there, Medlock sent a 32-yard field-goal attempt wide left and through the back of the end zone for a single.

Newly-signed Esks kicker Swayze Waters then clanked a 51-yard field-goal attempt off the upright, continuing a rough night for both teams’ kickers.

Winnipeg finally found the end zone with just 13 seconds left in the first half, when Nichols found Clarence Denmark for a six-yard touchdown connection. Medlock drilled the convert to send the Bombers to the locker room with an 8-0 lead.

Edmonton came out of the gate flying in the second half, as Reilly led the Esks on an eight-play, 67-yard touchdown drive capped by a snazzy five-yard touchdown catch by Calvin McCarty. Reilly’s ensuing two-point convert attempt then fell incomplete.

Nichols and the Bombers offence responded a few possessions later with a two-yard Andrew Harris touchdown run; Medlock’s convert gave the visitors a 15-6 lead.

Waters cut the Esks’ deficit to a single score late in the third quarter with a 31-yard field goal — his first as an Eskimo.

The Bombers then opened up an 11-point lead on a ridiculous one-handed touchdown catch from Darvin Adams; Medlock’s convert hit the upright and stayed out, leaving Winnipeg’s lead at 21-9.

Waters again cut into the visitors’ lead with a 42-yard field goal, and with 11 minutes and change remaining, Edmonton trailed 21-12.

Following a Winnipeg two-and-out, Reilly then threaded the needle to Derel Walker for a picture-perfect, 21-yard touchdown connection. The subsequent Waters convert slimmed the Bombers lead to just two points.

A Chris Randle pick-six with just under three minutes remaining sealed the win for Winnipeg — Medlock’s convert rounded out the scoring at 28-19.

Winnipeg linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox paced all Bombers defenders with nine tackles in the win, while linebacker Adam Konar produced a game-high ten tackles in the loss for the Eskimos.

The loss now runs Edmonton’s losing streak to six games; head coach Jason Maas’s team is now unthinkably close to .500 given their 7-0 start to the season. On the flip side: Mike O’Shea’s Bombers have not trailed at any point in their last six wins.

Edmonton will look to halt its slide next week in Montreal, where they will visit the struggling Alouettes (3-11) on Monday afternoon (Oct. 9, 2:00 p.m. ET); Winnipeg will host the red-hot Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-10) on Friday Night Football (Oct. 6, 8:30 p.m. ET).

CFL Betting Recap - Week 15
October 2, 2017

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 15
-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 15
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 15
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 15
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 15

Analysis

Calgary (12-1-1) is not taking their foot off the gas, as they steamrolled cellar-dwelling Montreal (3-11) in a home game. The Stamps have rattled off 10 consecutive victories after the 59-11 win, and they're an impressive 8-1-1 ATS during the span. Defense has been a huge key to their success, as they have allowed 18 or fewer points in eight of the past 10 outings.

The Alouettes are going in a completely opposite direction, as they have dropped seven in a row. They're also a dismal 0-7 ATS during the stretch, averaging just 14.3 PPG. Their defense has also gone south, allowing 29 or more points in each game during the skid.

Toronto (7-7) is playing their best football of the season, winning and covering each of their past three outings. They're averaging 36.7 PPG during the win streak while giving up 26.7 PPG. As such, the 'over' has also connected in each of the past three. They'll be looking for a little redemption against Saskatchewan (7-6). The Roughriders topped the Argos 38-27 on July 29 back in Regina.

Team Betting Notes

-- Ottawa (5-9-1) is in the middle of a season-worst scoring slump, averaging just 13.0 PPG over the past two outings. The defense of the RedBlacks has been holding its own, giving up just 18.6 PPG over the past seven games, As such, total bettors should continue to thump the 'under' on Ottawa. The under is 5-0 over the past five outings, and 10-1-2 across the past 13.

-- It's been a tale of two seasons for Edmonton (7-6). They started out 7-0 SU through Aug. 10, but they dropped a 33-26 game in Winnipeg (10-3) back on Aug. 17 to start a six-game slide. The Eskimos are also a dismal 1-5 ATS during the span. They'll be in action next Monday in Montreal, looking to snap their slide against the worst team in the CFL.

-- Hamilton (3-10) was unable to get a win against Toronto despite scoring a season-high 35 points. The 'over' result was the first for the Tiger-Cats since Aug. 4 in Edmonton, as the 'under' was 5-0-1 over the past six.

-- The Blue Bombers continue to be cover kings, hitting the number for the third consecutive game and seventh time in the past eight outings. Winnipeg has stepped up on defense, allowing just 14.0 PPG over the past two for a pair of under results, the first time the under has hit in back-to-back games this season. The over was 9-2 in the first 11 games for Winnipeg.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 16
October 3, 2017

Saskatchewan pushed its overall record above .500 with last Friday’s 18-17 victory against Ottawa, but it failed to cover the 2 ½ points on the road. In Friday’s other action, Calgary kept things rolling with a lopsided 59-11 rout of Montreal as a heavy 17-point favorite at home.

Saturday’s doubleheader of CFL games started with Toronto outlasting Hamilton 43-35 in overtime as a three-point road favorite to take firm control of the lead in the East Division. Winnipeg ended Week 15 with a 28-19 victory against Edmonton as a three-point road underdog to hand the fading Eskimos their sixth straight-up loss in a row.

Friday, Oct. 6

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-10 SU, 5-8 ATS) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-3 SU, 10-3 ATS)
Point-spread: Winnipeg -13.5
Total: 57.5

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats showed some signs of life with three SU wins in their previous four games before last week’s loss to Toronto. They have also gone 3-2 against the spread during this same span of games. The one big takeaway from last week’s loss was the continued strong play of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who replaced an ineffective Zach Collaros earlier in the season. He connected on 18-of-32 passing attempts last week for 288 yards and two scores while adding another 32 yards on the ground.

Winnipeg would have to be considered the biggest threat to Calgary in the West. The Blue Bombers have won eight of their last nine games SU while going a profitable 7-1 ATS in their last eight outings. Matt Nichols completed 24 of his 32 passing attempts for 238 yards in the win at Edmonton and his two passing touchdowns in that game gives him a league-high 26 scoring throws on the year.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has covered the spread in four of its last five road games against the Blue Bombers. The total has stayed UNDER in the last four meetings, including Winnipeg’s 39-12 victory against the Tiger-Cats on Aug. 12 as a two-point road favorite. The betting line closed at 59 points.

Saturday, Oct. 7

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS) vs. Toronto Argonauts (7-7 SU, 6-8 ATS)
Point-spread: Toronto -1.5
Total: 51.5

Game Overview

The Roughriders continue to make a strong push towards a return to the postseason with five SU victories in their last seven games while going 4-3 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in their last three games behind a defense that has only allowed a combined 51 points including a tough 15-9 loss to Calgary two weeks ago as 5 ½-point home underdogs.

Toronto is in the driver seat in the East at .500 on the year after putting together a modest three-game winning streak both SU and ATS. Ricky Ray completed 65.8 percent of his 38 passing attempts in last week’s win for 330 yards and three scores. He is currently second in the CFL in total passing yards (4, 079) and he is tied for fourth on the list in passing touchdowns with 21. The Argonauts have averaged 37.6 points over their last three games.

Betting Trends

-- Saskatchewan has gone 4-1 ATS in its last five road games against Toronto and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last 10 meetings overall. The Roughriders drew first blood in the season series on July 29 with a 38-27 victory as 2 ½-point home favorites with the total going OVER 54 points.

Ottawa RedBlacks (5-9-1 SU, 10-5 ATS) vs. British Columbia Lions (6-7 SU, 5-7-1 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -4.5
Total: 51

Game Overview

Ottawa’s hopes of defending last season’s Grey Cup title are starting to fade a bit with just one SU victory in its last four games. Going back to an Aug. 10 loss to Edmonton, the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in the RedBlacks’ last eight outings. Ryan Lindley continues to get the call at quarterback with Trevor Harris still on the mend from an earlier shoulder injury. Harris remains questionable for this Saturday night.

The Lions know they need a strong push down the stretch coming off last week’s bye after losing five of their last six games SU while going 1-4-1 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven contests. Jonathon Jennings is back under center with Travis Lulay done for the season after losing his starting job early in the year. He has thrown for 2,232 yards and six touchdowns against a costly 12 interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has a slight 3-2 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings following this year’s 31-24 victory on Aug. 26 at home in a game that closed as a PICK. The total also ended as a PICK on a betting line of 55 points.

Monday, Oct. 9

Edmonton Eskimos (7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (3-11 SU, 4-10 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -7
Total: 52

Game Overview

Edmonton is another CFL team that has headed in the wrong direction following a promising start. A SU seven-game winning streak has been replaced a six-game slide. The Eskimos have failed to cover in five of those six losses and the total has gone OVER in four of the games. Mike Reilly added another 311 passing yards to his CFL-high 4,260 yards on the year and he is now third on the list in touchdown throws with 22. The problem has been an Edmonton defense that has allowed an average of 35.5 points in those six losses.

The Alouettes have not won a game (SU or ATS) since mid-August and with an average of 14.3 points a game during this prolonged seven-game slide, there is a good chance this losing streak lasts another four games. Montreal is dead-last in the CFL in scoring and its once stout defense is currently allowing an average of 30.4 points a game, which is the second-most points after Hamilton.

Betting Trends

-- The Eskimos have covered in six of the last seven meetings and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in nine of the last 12 games between the two. Edmonton beat the Alouettes 23-19 in Week 2 as a nine-point home favorite.
