Game Overview


Montreal comes into the backend of this home-and-home series with a chance to cement its place at the top of the East Division standings despite the SU losing record. In last week’s win at home, Darian Durant did enough at quarterback to get his team that much needed victory by completing 18-of-27 passes for 237 yards and two scores. This was just the third time this season that the Alouettes scored more than 20 points.


The Argonauts have been outscored by a combined 40 points during this current SU three-game losing streak and they have failed to cover in their last five games. The loss of quarterback Ricky Ray for last week’s game did not help the cause with backups Cody Fajardo and Jeff Mathews combining for 142 yards through the air while connecting on 18 of their 28 passing attempts. Ray remains day-to-day heading into this week’s games.

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (-2.5, 52)


The Montreal Alouettes can take sole possession of first place in the East Division when they hit the road to face the Toronto Argonauts in the second game of a home-and-home set Saturday. The Alouettes held the Argonauts to 296 yards of total offence en route to a 21-9 victory in the first matchup and hope to claim the season series, which would hand them the all-important tiebreaker, by registering their third consecutive home victory.


"We wanted to make sure we play 60 minutes this week," Montreal defensive back Brandon Stewart told reporters. "Keep playing, don't relax and don't let up." Toronto hopes the likely return of Ricky Ray can provide the boost it needs to end a three-game skid. Ray took the majority of the first-team reps in practice after missing Friday's defeat because of a shoulder injury, and looks to breathe some life into a listless offence that was held without a touchdown for the first time this season in Week 8. "I'll be throwing a lot these next few days but I'm hoping I'll be ready to go," Ray told reporters. "Just having some rest last week and not doing anything other than rehab really helped it feel better this week."

LINE HISTORY: The Argos opened as 2.5-point chalk and that number appears fine with bettors and has yet to move. The total hit the betting board at 52 and hasn’t moved off the opening number.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (3-4 SU, 4-3 ATS, 2-5 O/U): Darian Durant completed 18-of-27 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns against Toronto to move past Sam Etcheverry (30,381) for 14th place on the CFL's all-time passing yardage list with 30,484. Montreal traded backup quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who appeared in 22 games for the Alouettes, to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for defensive back Tevaughn Campbell and two third-round draft picks. Montreal's win against the Argonauts came at a cost as offensive lineman Philippe Gagnon, defensive tackle Keith Shologan and fullback J.C. Beaulieu all suffered knee injuries and will miss Saturday's clash.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (3-5 SU, 2-6 ATS, 3-5 O/U): Toronto struggled mightily without Ray as Jeff Mathews was limited to 67 passing yards in the first half before he was pulled in favour of Cody Fajardo, who threw for 75 yards and added another 60 on the ground against the Alouettes. Toronto released wide receiver Khalil Paden, who caught nine passes for 107 yards during his brief stint with the team, after failing to make an impact on the field. Former Ohio State star DeVier Posey, who has caught two touchdown passes in 2017, is inching closer to a return as he practiced for the first time after missing the last five games because of a leg injury.

ARGOS AIR IT OUT EN ROUTE TO 38-6 WIN OVER ALS


TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts channelled some of the excitement of the neighbouring Canadian National Exhibition on Saturday at BMO Field, where they dominated the visiting Montreal Alouettes en route to a 38-6 victory.


Ricky Ray threw for 377 yards and a quartet of touchdowns in the win for Toronto (4-5), while the double-blue defence limited Montreal (3-5) to just 163 yards of offence.


Facing his former team, Argos receiver S.J. Green was nothing short of dominant in catching nine passes for 145 yards and two spectacular touchdowns.


Saturday’s contest was over by the half; Toronto scored four majors in the second quarter to pull away, while allowing Montreal just 77 total offensive yards in the opening 30 minutes.


The lone bright spot on the afternoon for the Alouettes was receiver Nik Lewis, whose six catches vaulted him over Ben Cahoon and into second on the CFL’s all-time receptions list


The Argos opened the scoring on their first possession of the afternoon, as Ray led the Boatmen down the field on a methodical eight-play drive before finding S.J. Green in the end zone through double coverage. The ensuing Lirim Hajrullahu convert made it 7-0 Toronto.


Montreal then drove the length of the field on a 10-play drive only to have the 11th play, a Darian Durant pass, intercepted on the Argos goal line by Toronto linebacker Cassius Vaughn.


A catch-and-run touchdown for Declan Cross early in the second quarter was brought off the board by a holding penalty; two plays later, Ray aired one out to the end zone via S.J. Green airways for a 28-yard touchdown connection. Hajrullahu’s convert then made it 14-0 for the double blue.


Toronto found the end zone on the very next play, as Alouettes return man Stefan Logan muffed a punt and rookie Justin Tuggle returned the loose ball for a scoop and score. Hajrullahu’s convert pushed the Argos’ lead to 21-0.


The hosts continued to dominate, and Declan Cross found the end zone again — this time legally — on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ray. Hajrullahu’s fourth convert of the afternoon brought the Toronto lead to 28-0.


Armanti Edwards got in on the action in the final minute of the first half, hauling in a seven-yard Ray pass for a touchdown; following Hajrullahu’s convert, Toronto took a 35-0 lead into the locker room.


Hajrullahu sent a 54-yard field goal attempt wide right late in the third quarter.


It was Montreal’s defence that broke the Argo shutout bid with 30-odd seconds left in quarter, as Dominique Tovell stepped up and intercepted Ray for a 61-yard pick-six. Durant’s two-point convert attempt fell incomplete, and the score stood at 35-6.


A 22-yard chip shot from Hajrullahu rounded out the afternoon’s scoring.


Defensive leaders in Saturday’s contest for Toronto included Tuggle, who in addition to his scoop and score had three tackles and a pass breakup, and Marcus Ball, who recorded a team-high six tackles. Montreal defensive Dondre Wright registered a game-high eight tackles.


Drew Willy took over at quarterback for Montreal on its final possession, relieving Durant after an underwhelming 14-for-27, 93-yard, one-interception performance on the veteran’s 35th birthday.


The win was not without a cost for the Argos, who lost starting cornerback Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and slot back Anthony Coombs to injury.


The Alouettes will face a short week, with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers due to pay them a visit on the Week-10 edition of Thursday Night Football (Aug. 24, 7:30 p.m. ET), while Toronto will head west for a date with the red-hot Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night (Aug. 26, 9 p.m. ET).

— Going into Sunday, Angels/Twins are tied for the 2nd Wild Card in the AL.

Sunday’s List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Sunday……..


13) Lot of major league umpires wore white wristbands Saturday to protest Ian Kinsler not being suspended after he verbally thrashed umpire Angel Hernandez earlier this week.


Earlier this month, umpire Joe West was suspended for three days, simply for saying that Adrian Beltre complained more than any other player.


The statement from MLB is clear; players matter more than umpires.


12) Mets’ game Friday night ended around midnight; Curtis Granderson was traded right after the game, and was in Detroit Saturday afternoon, batting 5th for the Dodgers in a game that started at 4:00. Joc Pederson was sent to AAA to make room for Granderson.


11) Is great to hear 82-year old Dick Enberg calling the Dodgers-Tigers games this weekend. One of the all-time great broadcasters, Mr Enberg called Padre games up until last season. To me, he is best-known for doing college basketball on NBC in the late 70’s/80’s.


10) Umpire Adam Hamari is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; he had the plate in Detroit Saturday, and had lot of family at the game. Do friends/relatives of umpires cheer loudly for good calls? Do they take grief if a call goes against the home team?


9) Giancarlo Stanton is the 4th big leaguer to hit 23 homers in a 35-game span; the other three were Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa.


8) Brooklyn Nets will play regular season games against the Thunder and Heat in Mexico City in December.


7) Detroit’s Justin Upton hit a homer Friday night; when he was between 2nd and 3rd base, he suddenly backtracked and went back to touch first base again, just to make sure he got it. Never saw that before If you miss first base, you dion’t even get credit for a hit, much less a homer, run scored and an RBI.


6) Tight end Nick O’Leary caught three passes for 50 yards for Buffalo Thursday night; the Florida State alum is the grandson of golfing great Jack Nicklaus.


5) Not only did Joc Pederson get sent to AAA, but San Diego sent RF Hunter Renfroe down to AAA El Paso— he was in an 8-for-64 skid at the time of his demotion.


4) 53-year old Davis Love III is three shots out of the lead after three rounds of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Love’s son is also in the Wyndham field; the last time a golfer won a PGA Tour event when his son was in the field? Craig Stadler, at the 2003 BC Open.


3) Seattle Seahawks lost starting LT George Fant for the year with an ACL injury; Fant was a basketball player at Western Kentucky but had improved enough to become an NFL starter.


2) Dodgers are now 52-9 in their last 61 games— this is a historic run, which won’t mean a thing once the playoffs start. Clayton Kershaw better get healthy.


1) Former Boston Bruins’ coach/TSN hockey announcer Don Cherry sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame at Wrigley Field Saturday, dressed in a suit jacket, with, um……cherries on it. Cherry was a really good coach who is a complete character as a TV analyst.

— 92% of the bets placed have been placed on Conor McGregor for Saturday’s fight, but 79% of the money bet is on Floyd Mayweather.


— Indians 5, Boston 4— Andrew Miller/Carlos Santana left with injuries, but Cleveland now has a 6-game lead in AL Central.


— Jay Bruce is 16 for 44 (.364) since joining the Indians.


— 78 of Colorado’s 124 games this season have been started by rookie pitchers.


— The last preseason #1 team to win a college football national title? USC in 2004.


— San Francisco Giants have been eliminated from playoff contention already, the earliest any team has been eliminated since 1998.

13) New Jersey Jets have had five head coaches since Bill Parcells left after the 1999 season; here are their records— their first season with the Jets, then the rest of the tenures after.


2000— Al Groh: 1st year: 9-7. Left after that season
2001-05— Herm Edwards: 1st year: 10-6. Rest of tenure: 29-35
2006-08— Eric Mangini: 1st year: 10-6. Rest of tenure: 13-19
2009-14— Rex Ryan: 1st year: 9-7. Rest of tenure: 37-43

I have no explanation for this, but these are the facts- they are not in dispute.


12) Jets’ QB Christian Hackenberg got hit so hard by a Detroit lineman the other night, I actually feared for his health when I saw a replay of the hit. That one had to hurt……a lot.


11) Showtime did an excellent reality series last year following Florida State football; they did one on Notre Dame the year before (I didn’t see that one). This year, they’re following the Navy Midshipmen, which should be interesting, seeing how ballplayers at military academies have to really be good time managers, given their workloads.


10) Part of the reason the Rams paid a King’s ransom for Jared Goff last spring was that they projected ahead to the Class of ’17 QB’s and they didn’t like what they saw. Something to think about if some of this year’s rookie QB’s get on the field early this season.


9) On April 17, the Orioles traded pitcher Parker Bridwell to the Angels for a player to be named later or cash. Bridwell is now 7-1, 2.88 in 11 starts for the contending Angels, with a WHIP of 1.17. If not for Aaron Judge, Bridwell might’ve been Rookie of the Year in the AL.


8) Scott Tolzien is the Indianapolis Colts’ likely starter in Week 1; he has suited up for 51 NFL games in his seven NFL seasons, played in only 9 games, starting three (0-2-1 W-L record). He’s thrown 128 NFL passes, with two TD’s, seven INT’s.


But he also went 21-5 as the starting QB at Wisconsin, so best not to underestimate him.


7) Cardale Jones is the 3rd-string QB for the Chargers; he was 7-15 for 61 yards against the Saints Sunday in a dismal 13-7 loss. Chargers’ only TD was scored by their defense.


Jones left Ohio State early- he started only 11 games for the Buckeyes. If I had to advise a young quarterback, I would advise him to play as much college football as humanly possible, for more than one reason:


— Experience makes you a better player; the more you practice, the better your skills become.
— Experience makes you more confident in your abilities; the more situations you see, the better you will handle the more advanced competition in the NFL.
— You’re older and more physically mature; NFL players are very large grown men.


6) Broncos-Raiders is a bitter rivalry and always has been, but this year’s games should get a boost in intensity. Bill Musgrave is Denver’s new QB coach this season, after the Raiders let him walk after two years of being Oakland’s offensive coordinator.


I’m sure there are no hard feelings.


5) Geniuses at ESPN showed Sonny Gray’s pitching line on the crawl on the bottom of the screen Sunday night; when it showed he had no strikeouts, they were kind enough to add (0 K’s, career low), as if we couldn’t figure out ourselves that zero would be his career low. Oy.


4) Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin believes live tackling in practice is a necessity to properly prepare for the season; SI.com‘s Peter King wrote this weekend that of all the training camps he visited this summer, Pittsburgh/Seattle were by far the most physical.


Most teams are so paranoid about players getting hurt that live tackling is non-existent in most practices.


3) Anquan Boldin retires after 14 years in the NFL and 1,076 receptions; he started out as a QB at Florida State. When he played for the Cardinals, he broke his cheekbone while catching a TD pass and tried to talk his way into staying in the game. Tough guy. Great player.


2) I’m thinking that there will be chaos in some NFL front offices in 10 days or so, when 1,184 free agents hit the streets. Lousy teams will be working the phones, trying to improve their rosters wherever they can by picking up guys the better teams cut. Will be some guys starting for teams in Week 1 who haven’t been on that team for very long.


1) Lot of people are touting Tennessee Titans as a Cinderella team in the AFC, but one thing they better do if they’re going to make the playoffs— beat the Colts. Indianapolis is 15-1 in its last 16 games against Tennessee. That obviously needs to change if the Titans are really contenders.

Analysis


It was a 'chalky' week in the CFL as all four favorites won straight up and against the spread. All four of the matchups were divisional battles and things got a little interesting in the competitive West as Edmonton suffered its first loss of the season while Calgary inched closer with a road victory.


Even though we saw three teams post 30-plus points on the scoreboard, the 'under' produced a 2-1-1 record in Week 9.


Team Betting Notes


-- For the second straight week, British Columbia looked like a different team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. After getting embarrassed 41-8 at Saskatchewan in Week 8, the Lions were stifled 21-17 at home last Friday. It was the first time this season that BC had dropped back-to-back games. The 'under' has now cashed in three straight and is 6-3 overall.

-- Edmonton's chances of going undefeated this season were haulted on Friday as the club dropped a 33-26 decision at Winnipeg. The Eskimos were listed as short road underdogs and were catching points for just the third time this season. The 'over' connected in the setback and is now 4-1 in their last five games.


-- Hamilton (0-8) remained winless on the season as it suffered a 37-18 home loss to Ottawa on Friday. The Tiger-Cats actually held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter at Tim Horton's Stadium before getting outscored 31-8 over the final 45 minutes. The T-Cats haven't held an opponent under 30 points this season, which has helped the 'over' go 5-2-1. The team will be off in Week 10 and returning on Sept. 4 versus Toronto.

Montreal earned a 21-9 win at home in Week 8 but it was all Argos on Saturday as they cruised to a 38-6 victory. They led 35-0 at halftime but only a combined nine points were scored in the final 30 minutes, which helped the 'under' sweep the series. With the win, Toronto is back in first place of the East division.


-- The RedBlacks snapped their second three-game skid of the season on Friday with a road win over Hamilton. Bettors should note that Ottawa is now 4-0 ATS on the road this season despite going 1-3 SU.


-- The Blue Bombers extended their winning streak to four games this past Thursday with their 33-26 home win over previously unbeaten Edmonton. The club is 3-1 ATS during this run and is 6-2 overall versus the number, which is the best mark in the CFL. Winnipeg hits the road for back-to-back games over the next two weeks.


-- Saskatchewan was on bye in Week 9 but will be tested next Friday when its visits Edmonton, who is coming off its first defeat of the season.

Edmonton’s perfect straight-up start to the season through its first seven games finally came to an end last Thursday in a 33-26 road loss to Winnipeg in a game that closed as a pick.


In the first of two CFL Friday night games, Ottawa got a much needed 37-18 victory on the road against winless Hamilton as a 3 ½-point favorite.


Later that night in a big West Division battle, Calgary hammered out a 21-17 win against rival British Columbia in a game that ended as a PUSH with the Stampeders closing as four-point favorites on the road.


In the backend of an East Division home-and-home tilt, Toronto evened the score with a 38-6 pasting of Montreal as a slight 1 ½-point home favorite.

Game Overview


The Blue Bombers’ offense continues to score points in bunches and this unit has now posted at least 33 points in each of the team’s last six games while going 5-1 both straight-up and against the spread. Behind the throwing arm of Matt Nichols, Winnipeg is averaging 34.3 points per game. He has thrown for 2,414 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first eight games. Andrew Harris is second in the CFL in rushing with 495 yards on the ground.


Montreal will be out for revenge in this game following an earlier 41-40 loss to Winnipeg this season on the last play of the game. The Alouettes closed as four-point road underdogs in that Week 6 contest. More recently, they came up flat in this past Saturday’s loss against Toronto as part of a home-and-home series. This was the fifth time this season that Montreal failed to score more than 20 points in a game.

The Roughriders went into last week’s bye fresh off an impressive 41-8 romp against British Columbia as three-point home underdogs to earn a 1-1 split in that home-and-home series. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. Kevin Glenn completed 19-of-25 passing attempts for 320 and three touchdown throws in that victory against the Lions at home; however Saskatchewan is 0-3 SU (1-2 ATS) in three previous road games this season.


Edmonton’s seven-game SU run finally came to an end last week, but the Eskimos went down with a fight despite trailing Winnipeg that entire game. Mike Reilly put the ball up 33 times against the Blue Bombers and he completed 20 passes for 356 yards and two scores to go along with one interception. He is third on the list in the CFL when it comes to total passing yards with 2,685 and second in touchdown throws with 15.

Game Overview


BC has now dropped three of its last four games SU and it is 1-2-1 ATS with last week’s PUSH against Calgary. The total has stayed UNDER in the last three games with the offense posting a combined 55 points. This was after this same unit averaged 31.7 points through its first six contests. Jonathon Jennings got the start last week against the Stampeders and he went 26-for-38 for 240 yards and a score against two interceptions.


RedBlacks’ quarterback Trevor Harris continues to set the pace in the CFL with a league-high 2,862 passing yards and 18 scoring strikes through the air. He lit up Hamilton last week for 394 yards and two passing touchdowns while connecting on 75 percent of his 48 passing attempts. Ottawa’s six losses this season were by a combined 20 points.

Game Overview

Toronto got Ricky Ray back at quarterback for the backend of its home-and-home series last week and the result was a much needed win that has the Argonauts in first place in the watered-down East Division. His sore shoulder was obviously not an issue with 377 total yards passing and four touchdown throws. Ray completed an amazing 81.4 percent of his 43 passing attempts against Montreal.


The Stampeders continue to make their move towards the top spot in the West with a SU four-game winning streak while going 3-0-1 ATS. They remain the highest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 34.5 PPG and their defense is holding opposing teams to 20.3 points a game. Bo Levi Mitchell has been putting up some pretty impressive numbers of his own at quarterback with 2,318 yards passing and 13 touchdown throws, but last Friday night’s effort against BC was not one of his best with a completion rate of just 48.4 percent.

MONTREAL — Clarence Denmark hauled in two touchdown passes, including one on the first drive of overtime, to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 34-31 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday night in Montreal.


After the Als tied it up on a B.J. Cunningham touchdown, Chris Randle’s second interception of the night set up the eventual game-winning kick by Justin Medlock.


The dramatic finish had everything you could ask for in a football game, including a record-breaking performance from Nik Lewis that saw the prolific receiver pass Geroy Simon at the top of the all-time receptions list.


In the end, however, Lewis’ big night was spoiled by some more late-game heroics by the Bombers, who never once trailed on the way to their fifth straight victory.


While the first meeting between these teams produced 81 points, the first half of Thursday’s rematch resembled little of the sort.


A 47-yard field goal by Justin Medlock put Winnipeg up 3-0 on the game’s opening possession before the defence got involved shortly after when Durant’s pass to the boundary was picked off by veteran defensive back Chris Randle and returned to midfield.


Nichols and the offence cashed in six plays later, when the Bomber pivot’s pass found Clarence Denmark in the end zone for the six-yard touchdown to put Winnipeg ahead 10-0.


The Alouettes’ misery appeared to have carried over from the previous week — when Darian Durant threw for only 93 yards and the offence failed to register a single point — because on the very next possession, Durant had the ball stripped and recovered by Bombers linebacker Maurice Leggett.


But the Alouettes persevered and, eventually, fought back. After a quick two-and-out and a 19-yard Boris Bede field goal cut the deficit to 10-3, the offence struck gold near the end of the second quarter.


Durant completed six straight passes in the final minute of the first half, culminating in a 31-yard catch-and-run by George Johnson to knot things up at 10 apiece heading into halftime.


In the second half, with Lewis getting plenty of attention following a four-catch first half, the Bombers were the ones coming out flying. They fed off the momentum of a failed fake punt play by the Alouettes, getting a 44-yard catch by Adams followed by a three-yard touchdown grab by Julian Feoli Gudino to reclaim a seven-point lead.


For the Alouettes, another long drive failed to produce a touchdown when Durant’s pass slipped through the mitts of Samuel Giguere, but another chip shot by Bede — this one from 19 yards out — made it a 17-13 ballgame.


If the momentum was going to turn in the Als’ favour, the perfect time would be early in the fourth quarter. The Bombers were given two chances to extend their lead thanks to an illegal contact penalty rewarded on a challenge — however, Noel Thorpe’s defence refused to snap, stopping Denmark shy of the goal line on second down to force an 11-yard Medlock field goal.


Just like they had all season, however, the Bombers continued their penchant of frustrating opponents late in football games. While the Als’ offence stumbled, Nichols and co. chewed up the clock with length back-to-back drives, the latter of which producing a 47-yard field goal by Medlock to put the Bombers ahead 23-13.


Down two scores and needing a response, Durant provided an urgent answer. On the heels of a 26-yard run by Brandon Rutley, Durant took a shot downfield for Jackson. In single coverage, the Als’ veteran receiver got late separation and came down with the football, scoring a 38-yard touchdown and cutting the Alouettes’ deficit to a field goal.


The Als made quick work of the Bomber attack, quickly getting the ball back and going to work with 1:45 remaining. With three quick catches, Lewis moved past Simon for first on the all-time list but the veteran receiver and his offence were more focused on the other task at hand.


An intentional grounding penalty made things slight more difficult but in the end, Bede’s kick — which initially appeared to be sailing wide right — just drew back inside to tie the game with nine seconds left.


After a wild final play of the game that saw three kicks go back and forth, the Bombers opened the scoring in overtime when, on second down, Denmark hauled in a pass and just reached the goal line for the major. Darvin Adams added the two-point conversion, putting the Als in an eight-point hole.


Despite never having the lead, the Alouettes refused to disappear into the late-August Montreal night. After converting a third-and-short, Cunningham found the end zone for his first major of the night, setting up a two-point attempt to tie the game. And on the ensuing try, after an illegal procedure penalty, Durant dropped the ball in the basket of Rutley for two points and a tie game.


In the end, though, the Als never would find the lead. Durant’s pass was picked off by Randle for the second time of the night while Medlock’s ensuing kick split the uprights, sending the Bombers to another tight victory.
