Edmonton (6-0) @ Ottawa (1-5-1)— None of Ottawa’ five losses are by more than four points; underdogs are 5-2 vs spread in their games this season, with four of last five staying under total. Eskimos (-6) nipped Ottawa 23-21 at home five weeks ago, outrushing RedBlacks 113-59- they were 0-3 vs Ottawa LY, losing by 3-12 in two visits here. Last three Edmonton games went over total; only one of their six wins is by more than five points. Eskimos are 2-0 on road, with both wins by FG, at BC/Hamilton. Ottawa is 1-2-1 at home, losing by 1 to Toronto, 3 to Winnipeg.


Toronto (3-4) @ Montreal (2-4)— Argonauts allowed 79 points in losing last two games; they’re 1-2 on road, losing 33-25 at Winnipeg, 38-27 in Regina. Three of their last four games went over. Lions gained 547 yards LW in game that was 22-0 after 3rd quarter. Saskatchewan is 2-1 at home, with only loss in OT to Winnipeg- favorites covered all three of their home tilts, all of which went over the total. Lions are 4-0 vs spread if they allow 26 or less points, 0-3 if they allow 30+; BC is 3-1 on road, with only loss 37-26 in Edmonton. BC is only team in CFL not to have its bye yet.

Thursday's CFL Betting Preview and Odds: Eskimos at RedBlacks

Mike Reilly threw for 317 yards and accounted for four touchdowns against Hamilton to extend his touchdown passing streak to 16 regular-season games, which is tied for the longest in franchise history.


Edmonton Eskimos at Ottawa RedBlacks (-2, 55.5)


The Edmonton Eskimos look to keep their perfect record intact when they hit the road to take on the Ottawa RedBlacks on Thursday. The Eskimos held off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-28 on Friday to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1961 and hope to continue their winning ways by sweeping the season series with the RedBlacks following a 23-21 victory July 14.


Edmonton's offence hasn't skipped a beat despite injuries to their top two running backs John White (knee) and Travon Van (shoulder), and star wide receiver Adarius Bowman (hamstring) as they have put up 31 or more points in three consecutive games. Ottawa is the only team in CFL history to have its first seven games decided by five points or fewer after a 33-30 setback to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The RedBlacks failed once again to hold on to a late lead, giving up 10 points in the final five minutes to suffer their fifth loss in six games, and hope to bounce back by beating a West Division opponent for the first time in five tries. "You can call me crazy but I still believe in this team," Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris told reporters. "We'll keep fighting and we'll put together a string of wins as we're a good team."

LINE HISTORY: The Edmonton Eskimos opened as 2.5-point road favorites and on Wednesday morning, that line flipped all of the way to Ottawa -2. The total hit the betting boards at 55 and has been bumped slightly to 55.5.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (6-0 SU, 2-3-1 ATS, 3-3 O/U): Mike Reilly threw for 317 yards and accounted for four touchdowns against Hamilton to extend his touchdown passing streak to 16 regular-season games, which is tied for the longest in franchise history. "The West is a dogfight and you have to keep winning to keep pace and keep that slim lead," Reilly told reporters. "We dug ourselves a big hole last year as we were 2-4 but 6-0 feels a lot better." Brandon Zylstra saw his three-game streak of 100-yard receiving games come to an end after he suffered a lower-body injury in the first half and his status for Thursday's contest is unknown while centre Justin Sorensen hurt his knee and is questionable.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-5-1 SU, 5-2 ATS, 3-4 O/U): William Powell rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a lower-body injury in the third quarter and could miss Thursday's clash. Defensive end Arnaud Gascon-Nadon, who has registered two sacks this season, missed the second half of the Winnipeg loss with an undisclosed injury and is questionable against Edmonton. Greg Ellingson continues to have a career year as he caught five passes for 59 yards a touchdown to take his total to a league-best 702 while kick returner/wide Quincy McDuffie accounted for 145 yards of return yards in his Ottawa debut.

ESKIMOS STAY PERFECT, DOWN REDBLACKS 27-20


OTTAWA – The Edmonton Eskimos arrived in Ottawa with a perfect record, and they made sure it stayed that way when they left.


Mike Reilly threw for two touchdown passes and 384 yards as the Eskimos added yet another notch in their undefeated belt Thursday night, tallying their seventh consecutive victory to open the 2017 season.


The Esks wasted no time in jumping out to a lead on Thursday night, scoring on the game’s first drive. Reilly looked calm as he dissected the REDBLACKS defence, finally finding RB LaDarius Perkins who dodged a tackle and sprinted 35 yards for the score.


After the Eskimos defence forced an Ottawa punt, Reilly got back to work on the first play of the next drive, launching a bomb to WR Kenny Stafford, who took it 69 yards to move deep into REDBLACKS territory. The two would have hooked up for the touchdown just two plays later were it not for a phenomenal defensive play by DB Imoan Claiborne.


The Eskimos carried a 10-point lead into the second quarter after dominating the first frame, racking up over 170 yards of offence through the air and shutting down the REDBLACKS offence.


Eskimos K Hugh O’Neill kicked home his second field goal of the game to give the Eskimos a 13-point lead early in the second half.


After being stymied by the Eskimos for much of the first half, Trevor Harris and the REDBLACKS offence came alive early in the second. Harris found a couple of his favourite targets in WR Greg Ellingson and SB Diontae Spencer to move inside the 10-yard line, before finishing the drive with a fade to Ellingson in the left corner of the end zone for the touchdown.


After a quick defensive stop it looked like KR Quincey McDuffie had given the REDBLACKS their first lead of the game on a spectacular return, but a blocking penalty brought Ottawa back to their own 30. Undeterred, Harris and the offence picked right up where they left off, and Maher’s field goal pulled Ottawa within three.


The two squads traded field goals to end of the half, as the Eskimos held onto a narrow three point lead.


Ekimos K O’Neill stayed perfect on the team’s first drive of the second half, kicking home his fourth field goal of the night.


Harris continued his success through the air on the REDBLACKS next drive, finding Josh Stangby down the left sideline for a big gain. Just a play later, Harris went to the opposite side of the field, going over the top to find Diontae Spencer in the back of the end zone. Maher’s convert gave the REDBLACKS their first lead of the game.


After penning the REDBLACKS deep into their own territory, an errant punt from Maher gave the Eskimos solid field position, and Mike Reilly made them pay. With SB Chris Getzlaf wide open in the left corner of the end zone, Reilly made no mistake, and after running in the two-point convert himself, the Eskimos led by seven.


The REDBLACKS could find no answer the rest of the way, as their comeback attempt ended with an interception deep in Eskimos territory.


Next week the REDBLACKS head to Hamilton to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in an important East Division matchup. The Eskimos will head back to the West Division, where they’ll take on the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg..

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….


13) Damned if you do, damned if you don’t: I know people who stopped watching the NFL last year because of the Colin Kaepernick/kneeling thing. Granted, these people aren’t avid fans, but they did stop watching games.


Now there is a petition with 130,000 names on it claiming THEY will boycott games if some NFL team doesn’t sign Kaepernick. The fact that he may have turned down Seattle’s offer to be a backup doesn’t seem to matter to these humans— maybe they want him to take Tom Brady’s place.


I don’t know, but if I never hear the word “politics” again, it’ll be too damn soon.


12) Mets saved $4M by trading Jay Bruce to the Indians. Its always good when the Wilpons can bank an extra $4M, seeing as how they’re friends with Bernie Madoff and all— a little extra change never hurt anyone.


Bronx Bombers offered $1M and two prospects for Bruce; the two prospects mustn’t be very good, or else the Mets just preferred cash.


11) 44-year old pitcher Bartolo Colon was in the big leagues before 17 of the current 30 major league stadiums were opened.


10) Houston Texans have five Clemson guys on their squad, a good college team to pick from. Never hurts to have players who are used to winning.


9) Scary story about Oakland University hoop coach Greg Kampe, who almost died this summer when six kidney stones that were lodged in his kidney became infected. He wound up in intensive care for five days— he is OK now, but in his early 60’s, sepsis is a very dangerous thing to have in your system. He was smart to go to the ER to get treatment.


Kampe is 583-424 in his head coaching career, all of which has been spent at Oakland.


8) If you care about such things, ESPN will have 28 consecutive hours of fantasy football coverage on its airwaves, starting Monday night at 7pm.


7) Mike Krzyzewski is having knee replacement surgery this week, so Duke’s basketball team has cancelled its summer trip to the Dominican Republic. Teams can only take one of those trips every four years; they’ll probably go next year now.


6) Odd Fact of the Day: A 91-year old woman in Thailand earned a college degree after spending more than 10 years studying for it— she got her diploma from the country’s king. Good for her.


5) With Padres leading 3-2 at Cincinnati Thursday with one out and tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, manager Andy Green changed pitchers, replacing righty Kirby Yates with lefty Brad Hand with a 2-2 count on Joey Votto.


Not sure how many times I’ve seen this before, but it is very few. Hand is San Diego’s closer, but to close this win, he had to get eight outs!!! Unusual strategy.


Votto walked, Adam Duvall struck out, then Scooter Gennett hit a grand slam, making Green’s strategy a complete disaster. Have no idea what he was thinking; the San Diego TV guys said this: “…..some interesting decisions by Andy Green”


4) UAB has brought back its football team this year, after it was gone for a couple years; the mayor of Birmingham says the team’s return will have a $50M positive impact on the city’s economy.


Maybe he thinks the Crimson Tide are moving from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham.


3) Mets had a deal to send Neal Walker to the Bronx at the trade deadline, but when Bronx acquired Sonny Gray, they scuttled the Walker deal, using Walker’s medical records as the excuse why. Mets’ brass wasn’t amused, which may be why Jay Bruce is in Cleveland now.


That and the thing about Bronx not wanting to absorb Bruce’s contract, which the Indians did.


2) Quarterbacks are valuable; there are reports that the Bengals turned down a 2nd-round pick for backup QB AJ McCarron. That is surprising.


1) Atlanta Falcons had six games LY where they had a +3 or better turnover ratio; thats going to be really difficult to replicate this season. Numbers people think Atlanta will regress some this season, and thats before factoring in the fact that they have two new coordinators this year.

Game Overview


This game remains OFF the board given the day-to-day playing status of quarterback Ricky Ray with a shoulder injury, but the fact that he worked with the first-team offense in Sunday’s walk through practice is a good sign that he might be ready to go come Friday night. Ray continues to lead the CFL in total passing yards with 2,421 yards despite missing the entire second half of last Thursday’s loss to Calgary.


Montreal is coming off a Week 7 bye after losing a last-second 41-40 heart breaker against Winnipeg the week before as a four-point road underdog. Despite the loss, the Alouettes have to feel good about scoring that many points as opposed to their season scoring average of 23.5 PPG. That Week 6 loss to the Blue Bombers was the first time that this defense allowed more than 23 points this season.

FIGHT FOR FIRST: ARGOS, ALS BATTLE FOR DIVISION LEAD


MONTREAL — The Toronto Argonuats and Montreal Alouettes begin a crucial home-and-home series at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday night.


The Als only trail the Argos by two points for top spot in the East, setting up a showdown for first place in the division.


The Calgary Stampeders proved to be too much for the Double Blue last week as they fell 41-24 to last year’s Grey Cup finalists. Toronto’s defence could not take Bo Levi Mitchell off his game as the reigning MOP threw three majors in the victory. Marquay McDaniel was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown tosses.


S.J. Green led all receivers with 87 yards on six catches while Bear Woods racked up nine tackles including a quarterback sack.


A collective gasp was heard at BMO Field when quarterback Ricky Ray was hit while in passing motion during the third quarter of last week’s match. He was forced to the sidelines where he remained for the rest of the game.


There were initial reports that Ray could miss up to six weeks with a separated shoulder. To the relief of Argos faithful, Ray was only listed as day-to-day by the team and has been participating at practice this week.


However, he won’t start against the Alouttes.


“It’s day-to-day with Ricky,” Head Coach Marc Trestman told Argonauts.ca when asked about Ray’s status for the coming weeks. “I’m encouraged and optimistic by the medical reports and him working during the week and playing some catch, but we really don’t know and we won’t know until next week.”


Former Hamilton Tiger-Cat Jeff Matthews will get the start on Friday night.


The Argos made some moves earlier in the week, signing former first overall pick Linden Gaydosh and bringing back recently-released veteran Matt Black. Gaydosh was the top pick in the 2013 CFL Draft by the Ticats and was traded to the Riders last season. Black was released by the Argos just last week and has spent his entire nine-year CFL career with the Argos.


While the Boatmen will have to get by without their offensive leader in Ray, the CFL’s leading passer, Mathews will get help in his first start as an Argo with the return of Armanti Edwards.


For many on the Argos roster, the trip to La Belle Province represents more than just another regular season game. GM Jim Popp, Head Coach Marc Trestman, receiver S.J. Green, linebacker Bear Woods and defensive linemen Jeffrey Finley and Alan-Michael Cash will face their former team for the first time.


For Cash, it’s his first game as an Argo after five seasons with the Alouettes. Green, meanwhile, was traded to the Argos for a sixth round pick while Woods was released after the first day of training camp.


The Montreal Alouettes are coming off of their bye week with a bitter taste in their mouths after giving up a 12-point lead with less than two minutes to go against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers back in Week 6.


The Bombers pulled off a miraculous comeback to stun the Alouettes 41-40 in a game which Montreal appeared to be in complete control. Winnipeg pivot Matt Nichols manipulated the Als’ secondary for a short touchdown drive. The Bombers then successfully retrieved the ensuing onside kick and Andrew Harris’ second touchdown of the game sealed the win for the Bombers.


Als quarterback Darian Durrant threw for 348 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception in the loss while B.J. Cunningham led all receivers with 109 yards.


“It’s very disappointing,” Darian Durrant told MontrealAlouettes.com after the game. “I think that we’re definitely getting there offensively, but we left some opportunities out there for sure… at the end of the day I think we played good offensively. We didn’t get the win.


“This is the ultimate team game. I just don’t want to harp on the offence but we’re getting there.”


The Alouettes seemed to be riding high after defeating the Calgary Stampeders back in Week 4, but have since dropped their past two games. The Als have had a tough schedule thus far, with five of their first six matchups against West Division opponents.


While Montreal has yet to pick up a win on the road this season, the Als have made Percival Molson Stadium a tough stage for opponents, posting a 2-1 record on home turf.


This week, the Alouettes welcome back running back Tyrell Sutton, whose 295 yards were tops in the CFL through four games before being sidelined by injury.


The Als will, however, have a hole to plug at safety as Chris Ackie has been sidelined with an injury. Third round pick in 2017 Dondre Wright appears primed to make his first career start in the Canadian Football League.

The Skinny


The Argos’ trip to Montreal will be a homecoming of sorts for several key members of the organization.


Head coach Marc Trestman will make his first return to Montreal in nearly five years. Trestman served as the Als head coach from 2008-2012, leading the team to back-to-back Grey Cups in 2009 and 2010. He parted ways with the organization to take on a head coaching opportunity with the Chicago Bears.


General Manager Jim Popp was also a part of the Alouettes organization for 21 years. He parted ways with the team at the end of last year.


Meanwhile, you can expect former Als Jeffrey Finley, S.J. Green, Bear Woods and Alan-Michael Cash to come into Friday’s game with a chip on their shoulder.

ALOUETTES STIFLE ARGOS, CLAIM 21-9 VICTORY


MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes defence was the beginning, middle and end of the story on Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium, where the hometown Als claimed a gritty 21-9 decision over the visiting Toronto Argonauts.


Coordinator Noel Thorpe’s Montreal defence limited the Argos to just 142 pass yards, registered two sacks and made late-game adjustments to stymie a Toronto comeback attempt.


Veteran linebacker Kyries Hebert paced the Alouettes (3-4) with eight tackles and a key fumble recovery, while Toronto (3-5) defensive tackle Dylan Wynn led an admirable losing effort from the Argo defence with seven tackles and a sack.


Montreal opened the scoring midway through the first quarter, when Durant bombed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ernest Jackson. Boris Bede’s convert gave the hosts a 7-0 lead.


The Als’ French-born kicker then sent a second-quarter field goal attempt from 31 yards out wide right and out the back of the end zone for a single.


Later in the second quarter, after a big 3rd-and-2 gamble paid off, Durant found receiver George Johnson in the end zone — the major was the first of Johnson’s career, and Bede’s ensuing convert pushed the Montreal lead to 15-0.


Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu responded with a 47-yard field goal to get the Argos on the board.


Veteran Alouettes defensive end John Bowman then forced Toronto quarterback Jeff Mathews into a fumble, which was recovered and returned by Kyries Hebert to the Toronto three-yard line. Two penalties and a Toronto red-zone stand later, the Als were forced to kick a field goal and settle for an 18-3 lead at the break.


Friday’s first half was defined by defence; both Mathews and Durant found themselves under constant pressure, each hit the turf via sack twice and was forced to throw the ball away on multiple occasions.


Toronto head coach Marc Trestman opted to put Cody Fajardo under centre to begin the second half; the Nevada alum marched the Argos into field-goal range, and a 31-yard Hajrullahu kick cut the Montreal lead to 18-6.


Bede restored the hosts’ 15-point lead on the ensuing possession, hitting a 21-yard chip shot.


With Fajardo in the game, the visitors found their ground game; Toronto marched down inside the Montreal 10-yard line on a time-consuming 12-play drive, only to turn the ball over on downs after a risky 3rd-and-5 attempt fell incomplete in the end zone.


Toronto did opt to kick — a Hajrullahu field goal from 37 yards out — on its following possession, cutting its deficit to 21-9.


Tempers boiled over just prior to the three-minute warning after a dangerously high tackle from Hebert on Fajardo as the Argos quarterback raced up the sideline.


Toronto’s run game continued to cause problems for the Alouettes late, and the Argos marched down to the Montreal 23-yard line with a minute left. Once there, they found the end zone twice yet failed to score: Fajardo connected with Jeff Fuller on a touchdown pass that was called back on a Chris Van Zeyl blocking penalty, then Khalil Paden dropped a picture-perfect pass on 3rd-and-long to seal the game’s outcome.


Quarterback Darian Durant managed the game well for Montreal, completing 18 of 27 passes for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while the Toronto duo of Jeff Mathews and Cody Fajardo was a non-factor in throwing 142 yards.


Running back-wise, Tyrell Sutton ate up 66 yards and significant clock for the Als; Brandon Whitaker collected 120 all-purpose yards for the Argos.


The two squads will meet again in Toronto for the Week-9 end of the home-and-home series.


Both teams will have plenty of film to go over and mistakes to correct; Montreal’s defence will search for a way to stop the run after allowing 7.2 yards-per-carry on Friday, while Toronto’s offence will need to be better at getting to — and converting once in — the red zone.


Kick-off on the return leg between the East Division rivals is slated for 4 p.m. ET on Sat., Aug. 19 at BMO Field.

2) Jeffrey Loria has apparently sold the Miami Marlins for $1.25B, thats billion, with a B, to a group of 16 investors, most famous of which is Derek Jeter, who will run the baseball side. Fans in Miami are better off without Loria.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look to extend their winning streak to three games when they battle the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the road Saturday. The Blue Bombers have won back-to-back games on the final play as Andrew Harris ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the 41-40 victory against the Montreal Alouettes before Justin Medlock kicked a field goal as time expired to down the Ottawa Redblacks 33-30, and hope to win their third straight meeting with the Tiger-Cats after sweeping the season series in 2016.


Winnipeg has scored at least 33 points in each of its last four games and can improve to 4-0 against East Division opponents in 2017 with another victory. Hamilton is still searching for its first win of the season following a 33-28 setback to the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 7. The Tiger-Cats demoted defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold on Tuesday and replaced him with former linebackers coach Phillip Lolley, who will be tasked with turning around a struggling unit which ranks last in points allowed (39) and net yards allowed (460.8) per game. "Phillip is a great football mind that has been around the game at all levels for a very long time," Hamilton coach Kent Austin told reporters. "He has been an excellent addition to our coaching staff this season and we fully expect him to flourish in his expanded role with our team moving forward."

STAGE SET FOR BOMBERS, TICATS ON SATURDAY NIGHT


HAMILTON — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are set to clash with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for a Saturday night showdown at Tim Hortons Field.


The Bombers are going for their third straight victory while the Ticats are still searching for their first win of the season.


The Bombers narrowly edged the reigning Grey Cup champion Ottawa REDBLACKS in Week 7 with a buzzer beater field goal for a 33-30 win. It was the second straight week that Winnipeg pulled off a last second victory after scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes against the Montreal Alouettes in Week 6 for a thrilling 40-41 win.


Matt Nichols completed 25-of-38 passes for 319 yards and one touchdown, continuing to surge his way up the CFL’s Quarterback index.


Receiver T.J. Thorpe will get his fourth straight start since coming off the practice roster. The 24-year-old has quickly become one of Nichols’ favourite marks, averaging almost nine targets a game and has caught 20 of 26 passes thrown in his direction.


The West Division is shaking up to be another tight race this year with the Bombers trailing the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders by just two points. A win this week for Winnipeg would set up a three-way logjam for second place in the West.


The Bombers have had equal success at home and on the road this year. Winnipeg has a 2-1 record this season in opposing stadiums and have won nine of their past twelve games away from Investors Group Field. It’s an impressive feat that Nichols credits his entire team for.


“I think it says a lot about a group of guys that can go and handle the tough elements this league has to offer when you’re on the road and be able to stay focused and get the job done,” Nichols told BlueBombers.com. “I’d say out of those nine wins I don’t remember an easy one and we know we’ve got another challenge ahead of us tomorrow (Saturday).”


The Hamilton Tiger-Cats came close to picking up their first win of the season last week, but ultimately fell to the undefeated Edmonton Eskimos 33-28. The Tabbies almost pulled off an upset by clawing back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter. They managed to cut the Esks’ lead to just one score as quarterback Zach Collaros tossed a last effort pass into the end zone with zeros left on the clock to no avail.


The Hamilton pivot had his best game of the season, throwing for 282 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Receiver Damarr Aultman had a team high 74 yards and a touchdown in his CFL debut.


More changes were in store this week for the Black and Gold as the team released linebacker and defensive back Will Hill. Hill started all five games he dressed for the Ticats and was second on the team in tackles. He made headlines back in Week 3 when he was suspended one game for grabbing an official.


The move follows a series of others that the Ticats have made the past two weeks. It started when Hamilton brought in former NCAA and NFL coach June Jones as assistant head coach to oversee the offence.


The Ticats also decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold earlier this week after five years with the organization. Reinebold spent four seasons as the Ticats’ special teams coordinator before being promoted to lead the defence during the off-season


The Ticats rank last in the CFL in points and yards allowed per game. Linebackers coach Phillip Lolley was promoted to the role.


The Ticats’ secondary will be getting some help on defence as Emanuel Davis is slated to return to the lineup on Saturday. The halfback has been on the six-game injured list since the beginning of the season and has yet to make his 2017 debut.


“It’s good to have Chop (Davis) out there for sure. There’s no question,” Head Coach Kent Austin told Ticats.ca. “We’ve clearly missed him in the secondary… those guys really help us. They help us with veteran leadership, understanding of the game, just experience across the board.”

The Skinny


The Bombers are a team known for putting up lots of points on the scoreboard. Despite their offence ranking second last in yards per game, Winnipeg is second only to the Calgary Stampeders in points per game. The Blue Bombers average close to 34 points per game and have had three games this year in which they’ve posted 40-plus points.


That doesn’t size up well for a Ticats team that is giving up 39 points a game on average. Look for Bombers running back Andrew Harris to get a lot of touches as the Ticats also rank worst in the league in rushing yards given up per game (104.2).


Hamilton will have to play one of its best defensive matches of the year if it wants to beat a strong Bombers offence.

BOMBERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WITH 39-12 VICTORY OVER TICATS


HAMILTON — Justin Medlock’s six field goals powered the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 39-12 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field on Saturday night.


Winnipeg pivot Matt Nichols threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns while running back Andrew Harris could not be contained, rushing for 107 yards in the victory.


Late heroics were not needed this game for the Bombers as the Blue and Gold were in control all evening.


Winnipeg got off to a fast start, pacing their way down the field on the first drive of the game. Nichols found an early chemistry with Clarence Denmark, connecting with the slotback on his first three passes of the night. Winnipeg capped off the drive with a 34-yard field goal by Medlock to take an early 3-0 lead.


The Hamilton defence shut the door again just outside of the red zone as the Bombers charged their way down the field but were unable to register a major. Winnipeg settled for another Medlock field goal to take a 6-0 lead.


A Ticats two and out gave the Bombers favourable field positon after Kevin Fogg returned the ensuing punt 38 yards. Winnipeg managed to make their way to the Hamilton 32-yard line, but once again settled for a field goal to go up 9-0 heading into the second quarter.


Hamilton had only one first down in the first 15 minutes compared to Winnipeg’s nine.


The Black and Gold were finally able to find their offensive stride in the second quarter. The Bombers were called for a roughing call when Cory Johnson hit C.J. Gable after the pass, advancing the Ticats 15 yards further downfield. Gable was clearly fuelled by the late hit, picking up 28 yards after his catch to put the Black and Gold in Winnipeg territory. Jeremiah Masoli finished off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak to cut the Bombers’ lead to 9-6. Hamilton’s two-point covert attempt was unsuccessful, keeping them within three points of the lead.


Nichols and the Bombers once again had trouble finishing their drive when they got the ball back, turning to Medlock for another field goal attempt. His kick was picked up by the wind and hit the right upright, keeping the score at 9-6.


Medlock would make up for the miss on the Bombers next drive, splitting the uprights from 43 yards out to extend Winnipeg’s lead to 12-6.


A lateral attempt deep in Ticats territory proved costly when Gable bobbled the pass only to be recovered by the Bombers. Winnipeg began their drive at Hamilton’s 36-yard line and did not take long to work their way down the short field. Nichols found Julian Feoli-Gudino alone in the flats, who ran untouched into the end zone to extend the Bombers lead to 19-6 heading into halftime.


Medlock opened the second half with his fifth field goal of the night, booting the ball through the uprights from an impressive 57 yards out.


The Ticats continued to claw back into the game as Collaros connected with Damarr Aultman for the receivers second major in as many games. Aultman powered through Winnipeg’s defenders to pick up 26 yards after the catch and surged across the plane to cut the lead to 22-12. The Ticats had two attempts at a two-point conversion after Winnipeg was called for roughing the passer, but to no avail.


Medlock’s night wasn’t over as he notched his sixth field goal of the game, this time from 34 yards out.


The Bombers weren’t done there.


Taylor Loffler recovered a Hamilton fumble forced by Maurice Leggett, setting the Bombers up in Hamilton territory. On a Bombers first down off of the turnover, Nichols threw a 50-50 ball into the end zone. Darvin Adams won the one-on-one battle, bringing down the catch for a major to put the nail in the coffin for the Bombers to go up 32-12.


A Collaros pass was picked off by Brian Walker with just over four minutes left in the match. The Bombers managed the clock by handing the ball off to Harris numerous times on the drive until they found themselves just outside of the end zone. Timothy Flanders made the short charge across the plane to increase the Bombers lead to 39-12.


Winnipeg has a short turn around this week as they travel back home to take on the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday. The Ticats will still look for their first win of the season when they face off against the Ottawa REDBLACKS at home on Friday.

BC comes into the backend of this Western Division home-and-home series with a 3-1 record on the road this season both SU and ATS. It was able to keep the Roughriders off the scoreboard in last week’s home-and-home opener until the fourth quarter when the game was already out of hand. With the exception of the Lions’ two losses to Edmonton this season, they have outscored their opponents in those five SU wins by a combined 53 points.


Saskatchewan turned to Brandon Bridge for a spark last week at quarterback late in the game and he led the team to two fourth quarter scores, but it is pretty safe to expect Kevin Glenn to remain at the helm as this team’s starter. He did complete 19-of-27 throws for 186 yards in that loss, but he was also picked off twice. On the year, he has thrown for 11 touchdowns against six interceptions.

Sunday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….


13) There is only one cut in the NFL this summer, from 90 to 53 players on Labor Day weekend, which means that 1,184 guys will hit the streets all at once, and lesser teams will scurry around and try to improve their roster by adding guys the better teams release.


12) I’m thinking it hurts HBO’s Hard Knocks some that there is one less cut date; that is the best part of the program, watching coaches tell guys they didn’t make the team. Sad for the player but compelling TV— lot of times those players move on and play for other teams anyway.


11) St Louis Cardinals are first team to score 8+ runs in six straight wins since ’06 Braves.


10) Cardinals-Pirates are playing a game in Williamsport, PA next weekend, five miles from where the Little League World Series takes place.


Williamsport has a team in the Class A NY-Penn League, so there is a stadium in place there, unlike last year, when Marlins-Braves played a game on a military base in South Carolina, where a stadium was basically built for that game.


9) Tampa Bay Bucs traded up to draft Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo in the 2016 Draft, but he’s been a disappointment and been beaten out by Nick Folk. Aguayo missed an extra point and a 47-year old FG Friday night— he got cut Saturday, which should make for an interesting scene on Hard Knocks Tuesday night.


8) If you’re not contending for a Wild Card spot in the American League, your team stinks, because some of the contending teams aren’t very good.


7) Pat O’Hara is a QB coach for the Houston Texans; he was in the terrific football movie Any Given Sunday, playing Dennis Quaid’s backup QB who also gets hurt, which forces Jamie Foxx’s (#3 QB) character into the game, where he becomes a star.


In real life, O’Hara was mostly a backup QB at USC; he played for seven different Arena League teams and has had a very interesting career. NFL Films should do a feature on him.


6) Total plays run from scrimmage in last February’s Super Bowl: Patriots 93, Falcons 46.


5) Cincinnati Bengal fans should be slow to criticize coach Marvin Lewis, who is 118-110-3 in 14 years as the Bengals’ coach, From 1984-2002, before Lewis took over, Cincy went 116-192 under four different head coaches. Be careful what you ask for……..


4) Denver Broncos have only one road game in the first six weeks this season; they have a bye and four home games, then play on road in Weeks 7-9, with a Week 8 Monday night game, then a Week 9 game in Philly six days later. Unusual schedule; Denver has a new head coach and very little experience at quarterback.


3) Consider the career of former NFL QB Tony Banks:
— From 1996-98, Banks went 14-29 as QB of the Rams. When they cut him loose after 1998, they won the Super Bowl in ’99 behind Kurt Warner, who backed up Banks in ’98.


— In 2000, Banks started the first eight games for the Ravens, going 5-3, but Games 7-8 were 10-3/14-6 losses, so Banks was replaced by Trent Dilfer……and the Ravens won the Super Bowl.


I’ll leave the facts there and let you make your own judgments.


2) Gregg Williams is the new defensive coordinator in Cleveland; he has his son Blake back on the coaching staff this year. Blake Williams was on the Rams’ coaching staff as linebackers’ coach in 2012, the year Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL because of Bountygate, but apparently the other coaches couldn’t stand young Williams and he was shown the door.


1) If I was an NFL head coach (a frightening thought), my team would go for it on 4th down a lot and go for 2 after every TD in exhibition games. Games don’t matter; it is a good chance to get more plays to evaluate your players. Thats what these exhibition games and mainly for….that and ripping off fans who pay regular season prices to watch games that don’t matter.
