Armadillo's Write-Up

Friday, December 16

Miami is 7-2 with two losses vs top 30 teams (Iowa St/Florida); Hurricanes are #268 experience team playing #266 pace- they’re 4-0 vs teams ranked outside top 200, with three wins by 30+ points and a 74-57 win over Wofford. Florida Atlantic is 2-5 vvs D-i teams but upset Ohio State in OT in its last game 10 days ago; Owls made 10-25 on arc in that game, are making 38.1% of their 3’s for season- they have four losses to teams ranked outside the top 200. ACC home favorites are 29-19 vs spread; C-USA road underdogs are 21-19.

Tex-Arlington won its last five D-I games with last four of those on road; Mavericks are #15 experience team but still turn ball over 23.2% of time, which is way too much. UTA blasted Bradley by 11-36 points last two years; they made 17-40 on arc in LW’s win. Bradley is 5-5 this year vs schedule #303; they’re 3rd-least experienced team in country, with no seniors in their rotation. Braves are 2-2 at home, losing to Delaware/Nevada by 14-22 points. Sun Belt road favorites are 4-3 vs spread; MVC home underdogs are 3-2.

First game in 11 days for Portland, after they beat Rio Grande in double OT last game; Pilots are 4-3 vs D-i foes under new coach Porter- they’re shooting 37.9% on arc (#72) and are #58 experience team. South Dakota is 6-4 vs schedule #231; Coyotes are #294 experience team that got put together for first time this year. USD has #308 eFG%, making just 44.9% inside arc. South Dakota is 1-2 on road, with only win by 5 at Drake. WCC home favorites are 22-13 vs spread; Summit League road underdogs are 16-22.

Long Beach State is a road favorite despite being 1-10 vs D-I opponents, with only win by 9 over Pepperdine nine days ago. 49ers over scheduled again; they’ve played 2nd-hardest schedule in America so far, but thats because guarantee $$ helps pay their coach’s inflated salary. Oregon State has ton of injuries, with Tinkle/Dew/N’diaye all out hurt. Beavers have already lost at home to Lamar and Savannah State, no bueno. Big West favorites are 2-3 away from home; Pac-12 home underdogs are 1-2.

Rider is 6-3 vs schedule #301; they’ve #96 experience team playing #43 pace. Broncs are shooting 29% on arc (#327), 60.5% on foul line (#337) but they have #43 eFG% defense so that helps. Drexel has new coach, is 4-5 vs schedule #249; they lost by point to St Joe’s in last game after leading by 11 with under 15:00 left. Dragons start two frosh, two juniors; they’re #223 experience team. Rider Rider is 5-2 vs teams ranked outside top 200. MAAC home favorites are 1-3 vs spread; CAA road underdogs are 13-8.

South Alabama won in double OT at Samford LY, after being down 10 with 7:48 left in regulation; both teams were under 60% on foul line. USA lost four of its last five games after a 4-0 start; Jags are shooting just 28.5% on arc (#333)- they force turnovers 23.7% of time (#19). Samford is 5-3 vs schedule #316; Bulldogs are making 38.8% of 3-pointers, despite being #320 team in experience. This is Samford’s first D-I game in twelve days. Sun Belt home favorites are 7-6 vs spread; SoCon road underdogs are 15-12.

North Dakota State was 1-20 on arc in 74-56 home loss to North Dakota nine days ago in Fargo; Bison beat UC Davis by 4 since then; they’re 2-2 in true road games, 1-4 vs top 200 teams, with only win in opener vs Arkansas State. North Dakota is 2-3 vs D-i teams with losses by 1-4-8 points (and three non-D-I wins). Fighting Hawks had lost by 2-29 points in last couple series games. Big Sky home favorites are 3-8 vs spread; Summit League road underdogs are 16-22 against the spread.

San Francisco is 7-1 vs easiest schedule in America up to now; every team they’ve played is rated #235 or lower, with only loss by 6 at #239 Eastern Washington. Dons are making 40.7% of their 3’s, have #4 eFG% in country- they hammered Portland State 77-40 in last meeting couple years ago. Vikings are 2-4 but they did win 91-85 at Pepperdine of WCC, their only win in five true road games- they lost by 16 at LMU. PSU has #344 eFG% defense in country. WCC home favorites are 22-13 vs spread; Big Sky road underdogs are 24-26.

Saturday’s six-pack

NFL trends for Week 15 games

— Baltimore is 1-5-1 in last seven games vs NFC teams.

— Panthers are 14-6 in last 20 games as a road dog.

— Texans are 8-1-1 vs spread in last ten divisional games.

— Vikings covered nine of last ten as a home favorite.

— New England covered nine of its last 12 games.

— Redskins are 13-4 vs spread in their last 17 games.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a damn cold day

13) NBA has a problem on their hands; teams are routinely sitting stars when they play back/back games, and fans who are paying serious money to watch these games aren’t happy. I’m not talking about players who are legitimately injured, I’m talking about guys being given nights off to “rest”. Rest from what?

Seems like most teams try to rest their stars on the road, so their fans don’t get screwed out of seeing the hometown heroes play, but what about when the Cavaliers or Warriors or Rockets go on the road?

People pay a LOT OF MONEY to see Lebron play or Steph Curry or James Harden play and if they don’t play, thats bad for future business. Bad for current business, too.

“I never thought this would happen in our sport.” Allen Iverson said that about players resting during Friday night’s Lakers-Philly broadcast.

12) Gregg Popovich is the man most responsible for implementing this practice, but the media won’t call him on it because he’s won a lot and he’s a grumpy human on a good day.

But I remember walking into the Mandalay Bay sportsbook just before Christmas 2012 and there was a kerfuffle because the Spurs were on TNT that night and Parker/Duncan/Ginobili weren’t playing.

Spurs won anyway that night and now that practice has spread all over the league. Guys who played 2-3 games a day in their teen/AAU years can’t play a game one night, get on a private plane and fly to another city to play again the next night, its too much for them.

I sound like the old guy telling kids to get off his lawn but I’m right; modern NBA players make a bleeping fortune and they sit out games when they’re not hurt and it sucks.

11) I didn’t even mention people like myself who pay $200 for the Full Court package on TV; I want to watch ball, if a star sits out, I’ll just put another game on, so it isn’t as big a deal as if you go buy game tickets, then travel to the arena for that one game.

But when the average salary in the NBA is set to jump to $9M (AVERAGE!!!!) pretty soon, you’d think guys would suck it up and actually play in all the games, so people who drove 300 miles and use their savings to let their kid see Lebron or Dwyane Wade play wouldn’t go home disappointed.

10) There is a big mess up in Minnesota; 10 Golden Gopher football players were suspended for their bowl game, after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault at an off-campus apartment in September was re-opened. That opened a huge can of worms.

As a result of the investigation being re-opened, the rest of the Gophers are boycotting football activities, which puts their Holiday Bowl game with Washington State in jeopardy.

There is the potential for a lot of collateral damage here; bowls generally benefit charities, so that would be bad, Washington State would be negatively impacted, the people who work at Qualcomm Park and at ESPN would lose work.

There is the chance Minnesota could drop out of the bowl and be replaced by another team, but plans have been made and it would be cumbersome for another team to re-gather and begin bowl prep. Curious to see how this one plays out.

9) Elsewhere in Minnesota, Adrian Peterson will play this week against the Colts, coming back a little earlier than expected from his knee surgery.

8) This from Mr Bill Deacon on the Interweb:

“…..At the age of 52, Bill Wyman, Sir Mick (Jagger)’s former bandmate, married an 18-year-old called Mandy Smith. A few years later, Wyman’s grown-up son from a previous marriage married Mandy’s mother.

Which meant that Wyman’s mother-in-law was also his daughter-in-law.”

7) Louisville suspended its offensive coordinator as a result of the Wake Forest scandal, where a disgruntled former coach leaked gameplay info to Demon Deacon opponents.

I’ll say this, whether I’m right or wrong who knows, but it is how I feel: if a friend of yours does this and contacts you with gameplay info, no one on this planet is turning his friend in. You may ask him if anything is wrong, you may take the info and toss it away, but who would rat out their friend? It is unrealistic to think that would happen. A “friend” would not do that.

6) Austin Wiley, a top-20 basketball prospect in the class of 2017, has enrolled at Auburn and will be immediately eligible; this means the kid gave up his senior year of high school to play college hoop right now. Decisions like this are tough; you’re giving up a piece of your normal childhood, but for what?

Chances are he is a lot younger than his new teammates; from a social standpoint, is it a positive? He has to leave home; hopefully this turns out to be a good decision for the player, and is not a reaction to two Auburn players being suspended earlier this week after they got busted by the cops with weed.

5) Good news: Rod Carew is expected to make a full recovery from his heart/kidney transplants that took place Thursday night into Friday- whole thing took 13 hours. Medicine is an amazing thing.

4) Former NBA player Darius Miles is 35 years old; he made $62M in his 11-year playing career, which ended seven years ago. Unfortunately, Miles has declared for bankruptcy; this week his sports memorabilia was auctioned off near St Louis. You make $62M in 11 years, you shouldn’t be broke seven years later. Guys need to learn how to handle their money.

A guy like Shaquille O’Neal has been brilliant with his money; he owns close to 100 fast-food places and some car washes, plus she still banks a fortune each year doing commercials. Junior Bridgman owns 70 or 80 Wendy’s, but most athletes squander their money and that is a tragedy.

3) North Carolina is 8-4 vs Kentucky when they’ve played, with both teams in the top ten.

2) We will never see anything like this, but would love to hear a President’s candid thoughts (any President) after he leaves office.

— Was it what he thought it would be like?
— Did the time fly by?
— Did he enjoy it at all?
— Did he miss being able to drive his own car?
— Would he do it all over again, if he could?
— What advice would he give to future Presidents?

1) Nothing brings out hostility in people like getting stuck in traffic jams at Christmastime, when everyone is in a hurry to do the same thing; where I live, traffic jams are uncommon, but there was one today around 1:45 in the afternoon and people were salty about it. Horns blaring, near-accidents, people cutting off other cars, great fun.

Guy in lane next to me in a red Mercedes banged his horn so hard it looked like he might’ve hurt his hand. Why? Because the car in front of him let someone cut in front of them from a parking lot. Hey buddy, you drive a Mercedes, you’re probably rich. Chill. Merry Christmas!!!

Saturday’s best 13 games

Georgetown beat Syracuse 78-72 at home LY; they led by 21 early in second half. Hoyas won three of last four series games, winning two of last three visits to Carrier Dome. Georgetown won last four games, all vs stiffs; they’re 1-3 vs top 100 teams, with losses by 1-16-27 points and win over Oregon. Syracuse is 6-0 at home, 0-3 elsewhere, but Monmouth is only top 100 team they’ve played at home. Georgetown is in bottom 30 of country in defensive rebounding. Big East underdogs are 9-7 against the spread away from home.

Oklahoma lost two of last three games with four new starters this year; Sooners made 11-26 on arc, won 84-78 at Memphis LY, outscoring Tigers 13-4 over last 3:14 of game. Oklahoma is 1-3 vs top 100 teams with losses by 6-20-3 points and win over Clemson. Memphis is also 1-3 vs top 100 teams, with win over Iowa- they lost at home to Monmouth Tuesday. Tigers are making just 30.1% of their 3-pointers, 61.7% on foul line- they start three sophomores. Big X home favorites are 20-13 vs spread; AAC road underdogs are 7-12.

Wichita State is 2-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to Louisville/Michigan State; they beat Oklahoma by 3 in last game. Shockers have #3 eFG% defense in country- they don’t start any seniors. Oklahoma State is 2-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by point to Maryland, 32 to UNC; Cowboys split two true road games, with games decided by total of five points- they’re forcing turnovers 26.6% of time, #3 in country. Big X underdogs are 8-4 vs spread away from home; MVC home favorites are 17-9 vs spread.

VCU outscored Middle Tennessee State 18-7 over last 6:34 in 62-56 win LY; Rams shot only 31.7% from floor for game. Rams are 2-2 vs top 100 teams this year, beating LSU/Princeton, losing to Baylor by 8, Illinois by 18. VCU is turning ball over 21.2% of time, not good. MTSU is 10-1 vs schedule #91, with wins at Ole Miss, Vandy, Belmont. Blue Raiders won their last eight games; they’re 3-0 vs top 100 teams, with only loss at home to Tennessee State. Conference-USA road underdogs are 21-19 vs spread; Atlantic-14 home favorites are 15-25.

Texas A&M is 7-2 but losses are to USC/UCLA, Pac-12 rivals of Arizona. Aggies are #297 in experience; they’re shooting only 29.9% on arc, 62.4% on foul line- their only top 100 win in three tries was by 3 over Va Tech. Arizona is thin/young; they beat stiffs in last three games, are 1-2 vs top 100 teams, beating Michigan State, losing to Butler by 4, Gonzaga by 7. Aggies are playing pace #337; their first true road game isn’t until January 3. SEC home favorites are 23-23 vs spread; Pac-12 road underdogs are 7-6.

Arkansas-Texas was a big rivalry when they were both in same league- this game is in Houston, a semi-neutral site. Razorbacks are 8-1 this season, with only loss by 13 at Minnesota, their only game away from home. Arkansas is #32 experience team that is deep; they’re grabbing 40.6% of own misses (#6 in country). Texas lost four of last six games; they’re 1-4 vs top 100 teams, with best win by 9 over Alabama- three of Longhorns’ five wins are vs teams outside the top 200. Texas is shooting 28.6% on arc, and not forcing turnovers like Smart’s VCU teams did.

Purdue is 8-2 with both losses top 10 teams (Villanova/Louisville); they lost by 31 to Notre Dame in last meeting two years ago. Boilers are making 44.1% of their 3’s (#5) this year, have #4 eFG% in country.- they’re 2-2 vs top 100 teams, with wins over Arizona State/Auburn. Notre Dame was 9-0 before 8-point loss to Villanova last week; Irish are #59 experience team thats played schedule #294- they’re #1 in country on foul line and at protecting ball. ND is 3-1 vs top 100 teams with wins over Iowa/Northwestern of Big 14.

Indiana beat Butler 82-73 in last meeting two years ago; Bulldogs beat IU in OT in previous meeting in 2013. Hoosiers are 8-1 vs schedule #333 (they’ve beaten Kansas/UNC); they’re #312 in experience but play lot of guys- their one loss was in OT at Fort Wayne. Butler is forcing turnovers 23.3% of time (#23); they’ve got five top 100 wins but lost by point at #161 Indiana State. Bulldogs beat Vandy/Arizona on neutral floor in Las Vegas. Big 14 favorites are are 6-3 vs spread on neutral floors. Big East underdogs are 5-5 vs spread on neutral floors.

UCLA is an offensive juggernaut so far; they’re 11-0 vs schedule #257, scoring 100+ points in five games. Bruins beat Nebraska by 11/Michigan by 18 in games vs Big 14 foes- they’re making 45.3% on arc (#1), 62.8% inside arc (#1) at pace #13. This game is in Las Vegas, just second game they’ve played outside of California (won at Kentucky). Ohio State is 8-2 with both losses by a basket but one of them was at home to Fla Atlantic. Buckeyes have #38 eFG% defense; they’re 2-1 vs top 100 teams, beating Providence/UConn. Interesting game.

North Carolina is 8-4 vs Kentucky in meetings when both teams were in top 10- they lost 84-70 to Wildcats in last meeting two years ago. Tar Heels are #135 experience team playing pace #40 with a deep bench. UNC is 10-1 with only loss by 9 at Indiana- they’re 5-1 vs top 100 teams but struggled in last game, beating Tennessee 73-71. Kentucky is #347 experience team that is 9-1 vs schedule #187 while playing pace #11. Wildcats are 3-1 in top 100 games, with wins over Michigan State-Valparaiso-Arizona State. This is Kentucky’s 4th neutral court game already.

Northwestern is 8-2 vs schedule #299; if they want to make NCAAs for first time, would be good idea to win this game. Wildcats are 2-2 in top 100 games, but wins are over Texas/Wake Forest- they lost to Butler/Notre Dame by total of six points. Dayton is 2-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to Nebraska/St Mary’s; Flyers are #69 experience team but they’ve been thinned by injuries. Wildcats had surprisingly tough 68-64 home win over #329 Chicago State in their last game. This game is at United Center, a virtual home game for Northwestern.

Illinois is #44 experience team that will get its coach fired if they don’t make NCAAs; Illini is 8-3 vs schedule #163- they won last four games, including wins over NC State/VCU- they turn ball over 20.6% of time, a little high for a team playing pace #227. BYU is 7-3 vs schedule #248; they played #3 tempo so far, are 2-2 vs top 100 teams, beating Princeton/Colorado, losing to USC by Valparaiso by 3, both on neutral floors. Cougars are #298 experience team but their team is little older than most because lot of their players go on Mormon missions.

Chattanooga is 8-2 vs schedule #181; they split pair of top 100 games, losing to North Carolina by 40, beating Tennessee by 13. Mocs are #36 experience team that forces turnovers 24.1% of time (#12)- they’re 3-1 in true road games. Vanderbilt has new coach, is 5-5 vs schedule #108; Commodores are 0-5 vs teams ranked #130 or higher, with losses to Middle Tennessee and Bucknell. Vandy makes 41.4% outside arc (#13) but only 44.5% inside arc (#290). SEC home favorites are 23-23 vs spread; SoCon road underdogs are 15-12.

LAS VEGAS (AP) Malik Monk scored a Kentucky freshman record 47 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 16.7 seconds left to lead the sixth-ranked Wildcats past No. 7 North Carolina 103-100 on Saturday in a thrilling showdown of traditional powers.

North Carolina's Justin Jackson nearly outshined Monk with 34 points, and his basket with 45 seconds left put the Tar Heels (10-2) ahead after trailing much of the second half.

Monk responded with a right-wing 3 in transition to put Kentucky up 101-100 after it led much of the second half. After Isaiah Hicks only hit the backboard at the other end, Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox hit two free throws with 1.9 seconds left.

North Carolina got the ball in the front court with less than a second left. But Kenny Williams' desperation 3 at the buzzer got lodged between the rim and backboard.

No. 2 UCLA 86, OHIO STATE 73

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Aaron Holiday and Bryce Alford each scored 20 points as UCLA remained unbeaten.

Isaac Hamilton scored 17 points and T.J. Leaf added 13, including a steal and layup that sparked the decisive run for the Bruins (12-0). They continued their best start since being 14-0 in 2006-07.

After a sloppy, 12-turnover first half, UCLA led 44-40 when Leaf stole Micah Potter's pass under Ohio State's basket and scored over Potter. It started a 7-0 run that concluded with Leaf's 3-pointer with 16:53 left.

Alford's 3-pointer with 1:49 left put the Bruins up 81-71 and stopped Ohio State (8-3) from mounting a late comeback in the first game of the CBS Sports Classic.

Marc Loving scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half for the Buckeyes, who lost for the third time in five games.

---

No. 3 KANSAS 89, DAVIDSON 71

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Josh Jackson and Frank Mason III scored 18 points apiece, helping Kansas overcome a sluggish, sloppy first half to beat Davidson at Sprint Center.

Svi Mykhailiuk also had 13 points for the Jayhawks (10-1), who extended their nation-leading home winning streak to 49 games. Kansas considered the matchup with the Wildcats (5-4) a home game even though it was played just down the road from its campus in Lawrence.

It was the Jayhawks' eighth straight win in the building, including the Big 12 Tournament last season and the CBE Classic a few weeks ago.

Peyton Aldridge hit five 3s and had 22 points to lead the Wildcats, while Jack Gibbs - the nation's fourth-leading scorer coming into the game - had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

---

No. 4 BAYLOR 82, JACKSON STATE 57

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Al Freeman scored a season-high 19 points and made a career-best five 3-pointers and Baylor returned to Fort Hood with a victory over Jackson State.

It was the second straight year that the Bears played on the nation's largest Army post, about an hour's drive south of their Waco campus. Baylor is 10-0 for the first time since starting 17-0 in 2011-12.

There was a near-capacity crowd that included soldiers and their families at 2,400-seat Abrams Gym.

Edric Dennis scored 21 points for Jackson State (3-8).

---

Butler (10-1) has won two straight overall and has upset the Hoosiers twice in the last three meetings.

James Blackmon Jr. led Indiana (8-2) with 26 points and Thomas Bryant had 15 points and seven rebounds as the Hoosiers cut an 11-point deficit with 8:10 left to play to 79-77 on Blackmon's 3-pointer with 38.7 seconds left.

The Bulldogs answered with Tyler Wideman's dunk off an inbounds pass with 15.6 seconds to go and Indiana never had a chance to tie the score or take the lead in the final 20 minutes. Indiana had won five straight.

---

No. 10 CREIGHTON 66, ORAL ROBERTS 65

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Marcus Foster scored 22 points and Creighton rallied to beat Oral Roberts.

The Bluejays (11-0) led by as many as 13 early in the second half, but saw the Golden Eagles (2-10) claw back to take a five-point lead with 6:08 left in the game. Creighton held Oral Robert the rest of the way, talking the lead on Foster's short jumper in the lane with 3:28 left.

---

No. 11 LOUISVILLE 87, E. KENTUCKY 56

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 15 points, Quentin Snider added 13 and Louisville used a 20-0 run to close the first half for its fifth straight victory.

Seeking a good tuneup for next week's rivalry game against No. 6 Kentucky, the Cardinals (10-1) shook off a sluggish start and 12-6 deficit to outscore EKU 30-4 the rest of the half and hold the Colonels scoreless for the final 7 minutes.

Louisville never looked back en route to its 14th championship in 15 years in the Billy Minardi Classic, named for the brother-in-law of Cardinals coach Rick Pitino.

Nick Mayo had 15 points and Asante Gist added 12 for the Colonels (6-6), who didn't reach 20 points until the 16:39 mark of the second half.

---

No. 12 WEST VIRGINIA 112, UMKC 67

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Coach Bob Huggins earned his 800th win as West Virginia used a 37-4 first-half run to cruise to the victory.

Huggins is the 10th coach to reach 800 wins and only the third to achieve that milestone at his alma mater, the others being Jim Boeheim at Syracuse and Adolph Rupp at Kentucky.

Nathan Adrian led seven players in double figures for the Mountaineers (9-1) with 13 points.

LaVell Boyd led the Kangaroos (7-6) with 14 points.

The 45-point defeat is the worst for UMKC this season. The Kangaroos lost by 43 points at No. 3 Kansas earlier this month.

---

No. 13 VIRGINIA 79, ROBERT MORRIS 39

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Devon Hall matched his career high with 13 points for Virginia, which returned from a 10-day layoff for final exams.

Freshman Kyle Guy also scored 13 points and Jack Salt had a career-best 10 for the Cavaliers (9-1), who overcame a sluggish start and broke the game open with a 38-8 run spanning halftime. It turned a 13-12 deficit into a 50-21 lead early in the second half.

Isaiah Still led Robert Morris (3-9) with 16 points.

---

No. 15 PURDUE 86, No. 21 NOTRE DAME 81

The Boilermakers (9-2) opened the second half with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to four and then went on a 10-0 run midway through the half to take a lead.

---

No. 16 SOUTH CAROLINA 77, SOUTH FLORIDA 66

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - PJ Dozier scored 11 of his 23 points in the closing minutes for South Carolina.

---

No. 17 XAVIER 69, WAKE FOREST 65

The Musketeers (9-2) led most of the second half but didn't have the game in hand until Bluiett hit one of his two free throws with 2 seconds left. Wake Forest (8-3) missed a pair of 3-point shots that could have tied it before Bluiett got the rebound and was fouled.

1) Steelers (603) -3

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

13) Kentucky 103, North Carolina 100— A GREAT advertisement for college basketball, just a tremendous game. Malik Monk had 47 for the Wildcats.

if the Final Four isn’t from this group: Villanova-UNC-Kentucky-UCLA-Duke, it will be a surprise, which means who the 4th #1 seed is will be critical, because the “5th #1” will be the 2-seed in that same region as the 4th #1.

12) One of the cool things about college basketball is that during pre-conference play, you want teams in your league to win….seriously. It raises the platform of the whole league and could mean an extra bid to the NCAA tournament in March.

Kentucky beating North Carolina could help….say Texas A&M get a play-in spot over Virginia Tech. You never know.

Put it this way; San Diego State’s regression in the Mountain West hurts everyone in the league, especially potential bubble teams like Nevada.

11) Over the last four years, Los Angeles Dodgers have shelled out $113M, just in luxury tax payments- they’re expected to be over the cap again this coming season.

10) OK there is a Mercedes commercial where the young teenage boy bugs his dad to drive thru a snowstorm so he can meet his girlfriend at a movie theater. The father reluctantly does, and no one is there, but because it is TV, the girl shows up….in her parents’ Mercedes. The only two cars on the road. In a snowstorm.

Do these people not own cellphones? Do kids not text each other? Couldn’t they just watch movies at one of their houses, so one parent wouldn’t have to drive? Why does this bother me?

9) You know how Boise State has a blue football field? Well, Eastern Washington has a red field; it doesn’t look bad on TV but who decided this was a good idea?

8) Houston Rockets made 24-61 3-pointers Friday night, most 3’s ever taken/made in an NBA game. Just for the record, Phoenix Suns are 316-350 since they stupidly fired D’Antoni 8.5 years ago- they were 253-136 with D’Antoni as head coach.

7) Highland Park HS won the Texas 5-A state championship Friday night; why do I mention this? QB for Highland Park is Jerry Jones’ grandson. Imagine their booster club has some serious cash.

6) UCLA 86, Ohio State 73— Buckeyes did good job in first half of running offense, making possessions longer to keep UCLA from running, but then they didn’t in second half and Bruins pulled away. UCLA is great fun to watch because of freshman PG Lonzo Ball, who reminds lot of people of Jason Kidd— he gets the open guy the ball and UCLA has lot of kids who can put the ball in the basket, if they get it in the right place.

5) Purdue 86, Notre Dame 81— Irish led by 14 at the half, but Boilers stormed back and got Matt Painter a big win. Dick Vitale’s daughters went to Notre Dame, so if ESPN puts him on a ND game, they’re begging me to change the channel— it is intolerable to listen to him.

4) Phillies gave CF Odubel Herrera $30.5M for five years; he hit .286 with 15 HRs for the Phils last summer. Herrera is the first player Philly has under contract for 2018, which is next season. For a big market team to have such roster flexibility is interesting.

By the way, the word processing program on my MacBook Pro has an annoying auto-correct that changes Odubel to double every time I type it. Every time.

3) Lane Kiffin’s move to Florida Atlantic means that Steve Sarkisian is the new OC at Alabama, once the Crimson Tide’s season is over. Good to see Sarkisian get a second chance in life; hope he makes the most of it.

2) Brandon Shell, the Jets’ right tackle this week, is nephew of the great Art Shell, the Raiders’ Hall of Famer. If he is anything like his uncle, young Shell is a keeper.

1) West Virginia coach Bob Huggins won his 800th game Saturday, just 10th college coach to do so. He looks gruff on TV but I’ve met him twice and he’s a pretty normal guy to talk to, and when he was sitting in the lobby at an AAU tournament in Las Vegas in July of ‘15, a ton of people came up to talk to him. His teams are fun to watch. Congrats coach.
