Tuesday’s six-pack

— Dodgers signed 3B Justin Turner, closer Kenley Jansen to big contracts.

— College football coaching changes: Charlie Strong to USF, Luke Fickell to Cincinnati, Lane Kiffin to Florida Atlantic.

— Kiffin takes close to a 50% pay cut to become a head coach again.

— QB Jarrett Stidham transfers from Baylor to Auburn, a good get for Gus Malzahn.

— Dexter Fowler will be the first St Louis Cardinal to wear #25 since Mark McGwire.

— LIU 74, St John’s 73— Really bad loss for Chris Mullin; they also lost to Delaware State.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) First of all, the Rams are much better off NOW than they were when Jeff Fisher was hired as Rams’ coach in 2012. Much closer to being a winning team now but they’re still a losing team and in the NFL, that means you lose your job and that happened Monday. Special teams coach John Fassel will be the interim coach for the last three games.

Awkwardness: Rams’ COO Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff, who is Fisher’s agent. Should make Christmas dinner only slightly uncomfortable in the Demoff home.

12) If you made me guess who the Rams go after to be their next coach, I’d say Jon Gruden. If you let me choose, I’d say this: a) a combination of Mike/Kyle Shanahan or b) Stanford coach David Shaw, with Norv Turner as OC

No matter what, it needs to be someone with an offensive background, since they traded six draft picks to get QB Jared Goff.

11) Sunday was a rough day in the NFC West: all four teams lost, while turning ball over 15 teams and the 49ers didn’t have any turnovers. That is 15 turnovers for three teams. Oy.

10) Semi-good news for the Dolphins; it is a sprained ACL/MCL for Ryan Tannehill, not a torn ACL. Doubtful he plays again this year, but it makes next season’s prospects way better.

9) Arizona WR Michael Floyd got a DUI; when you’re on a underachieving 5-7-1 team and you’re about to be a free agent and then this happens, then Floyd is about to lose his job.

8) So you want to be a college coach? One of Western Michigan’s basketball players was charged with murder Monday in the shooting of a fellow student.

First of all, our condolences to the family of the victim. Very, very sad.

Second, the WMU coaches are now on the hot seat. Western has made the NCAAs once in 13 years (2014) under this coach; they’re 3-6 this year and now this happens. People who had nothing to do with this crime are going to pay for it.

7) One of the trophies Arnold Palmer won at the Masters sold at an auction this week for $444,012. Wow.

6) Lakers’ 6th man Lou Williams scored 137 points in a four-game stretch last week; since 1970, that is the most points scored in any four-game stretch by a non-starter.

5) People are frontrunners: Duke-UNLV game in Las Vegas Saturday had more blue than red in the stands. If Duke’s football team played in Las Vegas, how much blue is in the stands?

4) May have to research this next year, but it would be cumbersome; what is the %age of pass/run plays on 2nd and 10, after an incomplete pass on first down? I swear, NFL teams almost always run the ball in that spot, because 3rd-and-10 is seen as a spot where turnovers happen. The term “manageable third down” is mentioned way too much.

3) Eagles lost long snapper Jon Dorembos to a wrist injury; the young man has had a tough life. When he was 12, living a normal suburban life, his father murdered his mother and is still in prison. Dorembos is also a magician who appeared on America’s Got Talent.

2) Think about Lane Kiffin’s resume; he’s been a head coach at Tennessee, USC and with the Raiders in the NFL; now he takes around a 50% pay cut to be HC at Florida Atlantic. Guess he didn’t like being an offensive coordinator, even at $1.6M a year.

1) Happy birthday to my late Uncle Roy, who would’ve turned 100 years old on Monday. He passed away when I was 7, during an operation that now would be routine bypass surgery, but in 1967. it was a new thing. I remember his laugh, a great, booming laugh. A good man.

Preview: Owls (6-3) at Wildcats (9-0)
Date: December 13, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- Villanova's senior class is on the verge of an incredible record.

Josh Hart, Darryl Reynolds and Kris Jenkins have never dropped a Big 5 game since joining the Wildcats and they'll have a chance to go undefeated when they host Temple Tuesday night at 7 p.m. EST at The Pavilion.

No. 1-ranked Villanova improved to 3-0 in the Big 5 this season with a hard-fought 89-79 win over La Salle last Tuesday at the Palestra. Then the Wildcats stayed perfect on the season overall (10-0) with a 74-66 victory over No. 23 Notre Dame on Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Villanova is also going for its 18th straight Big 5 victory.

"It's unbelievable to think about," Villanova head coach Jay Wright told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I don't want to think about it because it's monumental. It really is."

Hart is coming off a memorable game with a career-best 37 points to go along with 11 rebounds and four assists in the eight-point win over the Fighting Irish.

"I was just out there playing," Hart told reporters. "In a game like that we were battling, battling, battling, to the end. Fatigue wasn't a factor."

The Wildcats came back from an 11-point deficit in the inaugural Never Forget Tribute Classic honoring the families of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

"That was just a great college basketball game," Wright told reporters. "We're really proud to be a part of the cause. It was a great atmosphere with what felt like a Villanova crowd. Notre Dame is so tough to play against. I think Mike (Brey) is one of the best coaches in the country. They're an underrated defensive team."

Temple elevated its record to 7-3 with a 74-65 victory over DePaul Saturday at the Hoophall Miami Invitational.

The Owls will enter Tuesday's game on the Main Line also at 3-0 in the Big 5, adding to the intrigue.

Temple led DePaul by as many as 25 points in the second half before holding on for the victory.

"I thought we made a couple of foolish mistakes on both ends, and a team is going to take advantage of that," Temple head coach Fran Dunphy told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We got tight, they were playing loose, and as a result the lead got cut."

Obi Enechionyia and Shizz Alston Jr. scored 15 points each while Quinton Rose added 12 points. Enechionyia and Alston also had seven rebounds apiece.

Temple received a lift from Josh Brown as he had 11 points and five assists in his first start of the year. Brown was named Hoophall Miami Invitational Most Valuable Player.

And he also contributed a career-high seven steals, the most for a Temple player since Will Cummings at SMU on Feb. 19, 2015.

It was just the fourth game for Brown in his return from an Achilles tendon injury in the offseason.

"We'll see how he feels like tomorrow (Sunday), let's see how he feels in one day, and obviously Tuesday for the Villanova game," Dunphy told the Inquirer about Brown's status. "He deserves that opportunity to be in the lineup. Now I just have got to manage his minutes as best as possible."

Preview: Grizzlies (3-6) at Ducks (7-2)
Date: December 13, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

EUGENE, Ore. -- After rallying late to beat two unranked teams at home, Oregon coach Dana Altman isn't taking any game for granted.

The No. 24 Ducks (8-2) put a six-game winning streak on the line when they host Montana (3-7) on Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

"We will have our hands full with anybody right now," Altman said. "We have to worry about ourselves and worry about playing better."

After moving up to No. 4 in the rankings in November, the Ducks fell following losses to Baylor and Georgetown. Oregon's current winning streak includes a 68-63 win over Boise State when the Ducks rallied from a 14-point deficit and the Oregon needed to come from behind in the final four minutes during Sunday's 65-56 win over Alabama.

"We're just stuck in the mud a bit," Altman said.

Oregon has three nonconference games left before opening Pac-12 play against No. 2 UCLA on Dec. 28.

"There has got to be more of a sense of urgency than we have got," Altman said. "We have to get a lot of things straightened out in the next two and a half weeks. I don't sense that urgency that the coaching staff has among the team so we have to do a better job."

Montana had a two-game winning streak snapped with an 85-83 loss at Wyoming on Saturday. The leading scorer for the Grizzlies with 13.7 points per game is sophomore guard Ahmaad Rorie, who transferred from Oregon after his first year.

"Ahmaad is a great kid," said Oregon point guard Casey Benson, who split starting duties with Rorie two years ago. "I look forward to getting out and playing. We have got to get better as a team. Montana is coming in and we know they are talented. We have to be ready to go and come out and play well. That is the focus for us. We want to win, but we want to play well and make improvements."

Oregon sophomore guard Tyler Dorsey is averaging 19.2 points per game in his last five outings while shooting at least 50 percent from the field in each game. He tops the Ducks with 14.3 points per game.

"That's what I do, I practice shooting every day," Dorsey said. "My teammates find me in good spots and all I do is catch and shoot."

Oregon continues to bring all-conference junior forward Dillon Brooks off the bench as he returns from offseason foot surgery. Brooks missed the first three games of the season and ranks third on the team with 13.1 points per game since his return.

The Ducks have had to adjust their offense since Brooks returned and he will likely go back into the starting line-up soon.

"A lot of it is not having a rhythm and not having a feel for each other," Altman said. "Offensively and defensively, I don't like the flow to our game right now. It can be corrected, guys just have to get a better feel for it, but we have to do it quickly."

Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Villanova captures Big 5 title
December 14, 2016

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Josh Hart scored 26 points while Jalen Brunson added 13 as No. 1 Villanova captured its fourth consecutive Big 5 title with a 78-57 victory over Temple on Tuesday night at The Pavilion.

Kris Jenkins and Eric Paschall added 12 apiece for the Wildcats (11-0), who won their 18th straight Big 5 game and their 17th in a row overall. Villanova won handily despite standout guard Phil Booth missing his eighth straight game with tendinitis in his left knee.

The Wildcats remain one of six undefeated teams in Division I along with UCLA, Baylor, Gonzaga, Creighton and USC.

Shizz Alston, Jr. led the Owls (7-4) with 12 points while Daniel Dingle contributed 11 as Temple finished 3-1 in the Big 5 this season.

No. 25 Cincinnati 96, Texas Southern 58

CINCINNATI -- Jarron Cumberland scored a career-high 18 points off the bench, and Gary Clark added 13 points and tied a career high with six assists to lift the Bearcats over the Tigers.

Cincinnati (8-2) shot 69.7 percent in the second half to rebound from Saturday's loss at No. 18 Butler that snapped a five-game losing streak.

Kevin Washington, the Bearcats' leading scorer, did not start Tuesday, but finished with eight points. The junior forward was coming off a rough game at Butler, where he had seven points and no rebounds before fouling out after playing 19 minutes.

Freshman Demontrae Jefferson, who made his debut Saturday at Louisville and scored 27 points, recorded 13 on Tuesday for Texas Southern (4-6).

No. 22 Oregon 81, Montana 67

EUGENE, Ore. -- Senior center Chris Boucher amassed 23 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots while leading the Ducks past the Grizzlies at Matthew Knight Arena.

Senior guard Dylan Ennis scored 22 points, and freshman guard Payton Pritchard had 12 for the Ducks (9-2). Oregon won its seventh in a row.

Guard Ahmaad Rorie scored 19 points to lead the Grizzlies (3-8).

Oregon won its 32nd consecutive home game, a streak that ranks third behind South Dakota State and Kansas among active NCAA runs. The Ducks are ranked in the AP poll for the 14th week in a row, the third-longest streak in school history.

Wednesday’s six-pack

My six most interesting bowl games:

— South Florida-South Carolina— Want to see USF’s mobile QB against an SEC defense.

— Michigan-Florida State— Seminoles played better late in year; there are tensions between the coaches, regarding recruiting.

— West Virginia-Miami— Hurricanes lost their last six bowls.

— Eastern Michigan-Old Dominion— Monarchs’ first bowl, Eagles’ first since 1987.

— Miami OH-Mississippi State- Miami started season 0-6.

— Clemson-Ohio State— Woody Hayes’ last game was against the Tigers, when he slugged a Clemson LB late in game.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

We start the day with a couple of odd stories……..
13) Wake Forest’s football team fired one of its radio guys, an alum and former assistant coach, after they found out he “attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions, starting in 2014.”. Yikes.

The guy was a Wake Forest assistant coach for 11 years under Jim Grove, but was let go when the school changed coaches three years ago.

Sidebar: Are any ACC football coaches nervous? If they bought info from this guy, could be.

12) Morehead State basketball coach Sean Woods was charged with misdemeanor assault in Indiana by two of his players, who say Woods assaulted them during/after a game in Evansville. Woods has been suspended by the school pending a resolution of the case.

Hard to imagine him keeping his job, but he has a contract thru 2020; if the legal charges go away, then the school has to make a decision. Would be expensive to fire him without cause.

11) On November 28, High Point beat Morgan State 62-61 in one of those game you never notice, except that in this game, High Point trailed by 13 with 1:35 to play. At that point, a win was virtually a statistical impossibility, but the Panthers pulled it off.

High Point is coached by Scott Cherry, who is from Saratoga up here in my beck of the woods; he sat the bench for four years at North Carolina- the great coach Dean Smith was a family friend.

10) Packers @ Bears Sunday; game time temperature is expected to be one degree. One.

9) Miami Dolphins signed TJ Yates to be backup QB; Yates is 4-3 as an NFL starter going 2-0 for the Texans LY. He also won a playoff game for the Texans in 2011; not many backup QBs in the NFL have a playoff win under their belt.

8) Lebron James was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated; I’m a little surprised, thought Joe Maddon might get the call for that.

7) All ten basketball teams in the Big X are in the top 75 right now. Very tough league; a good team is going to finish last.

6) Then there is the Mountain West, which has only one team in the RPI top 100, Nevada at #29. San Diego State has regressed; this is a one-bid league again this year.

5) Underreported story; former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is at Youngstown State, but he isn’t the football coach or the AD. He is the President of the whole freakin’ school.

4) Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins is the new football coach at Temple. if Paul Finebaum says he’s a good hire, thats good enough for me.

3) NFL will have four London games next year, hopefully not at 9:30am: Ravens-Jags, Vikings-Browns, Saints-Dolphins and Rams-Cardinals. Arizona-Baltimore-Cleveland will be playing in England for the first time.

2) Cleveland Browns are 0-13 this season, 2-11 vs spread; by way of comparison, the last winless NFL team, the ’08 Lions were 0-16 but went 7-9 against the spread.

1) More sad news, unfortunately. TV personality Alan Thicke, 69, passed away Tuesday after he collapsed while playing hockey with his son. Thicke was talented and funny; he had a talk show on TV for a while that was good but never quite caught on. Seemed like a good guy. RIP, sir.

Preview: Phoenix (4-5) at Badgers (8-2)
Date: December 14, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard was filled with a mix of emotions nearly one year ago during his first game as interim head coach when the Badgers posted an 84-79 victory against Green Bay.

Gard assumed a new role eight days prior to that game when his mentor, Bo Ryan, retired Dec. 15. Gard, a long-time assistant to Ryan, remembered well wishes, the fans' welcome and the team's 26 turnovers. He also missed his father, Glen Gard, who died Oct. 30, 2015 from glioblastoma multiforme, a brain cancer.

The intrastate opponents are set for their 23rd meeting as No. 14 Wisconsin hosts Green Bay on Wednesday night at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.

"I think overall everything is much more solidified, obviously, (and) we're much more entrenched in what we're doing," Gard said comparing the two seasons.

"It was a major transition that we were trying to undertake at that point in time. It was a bittersweet time, obviously, for me, too. With what we had gone through with my dad and to have that transpire, and not have him be there to see it."

The Badgers (9-2) ride a five-game winning streak and had six players register double-digit scoring in their 94-85 road victory Saturday at Marquette. Senior guard Bronson Koenig scored a team-high 18 points for Wisconsin, which shot 64.3 percent from the field in the second half against the Golden Eagles.

Koenig is the team's scoring leader at 16 points, while senior forward Nigel Hayes and sophomore forward Ethan Happ averaged 13.3 points apiece.

The Badgers averaged eight turnovers in its last three games. In the seven games prior to that, Wisconsin averaged 13.3.

Gard said players are making better decisions.

"We're not trying to force passes into places that they shouldn't be going," Gard said. "I think we've gotten better in terms of the angles that we're trying to use to feed post players or cutters. I think we've gotten better in terms of ball fakes and playing with two feet."

Green Bay (4-5) is led by senior guard Charles Cooper, who averages 13.6 points. Junior guard Khalil Small is the team's rebounding leader (5.8) and registers 11.0 points. Freshman guard Trevor Anderson averages 12.1 points and 2.7 assists per game.

One highlight in the non-conference season for the Phoenix was a stretch in its game last week against Central Michigan when junior forward Karem Kanter scored 20 straight second-half points in 5 minutes, 6 seconds. Kanter, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, shot 5 for 5 from the field and drained 10 of 12 free throws. Despite Kanter's effort, Central Michigan posted a 107-97 victory.

Linc Darner is working his second season as coach at Green Bay. The Phoenix reached the NCAA Tournament last season and Darner said players are working hard to remain competitive, despite losing its two top players through graduation.

Green Bay won the Horizon League tournament last year to earn its first NCAA berth in 20 years.

"We don't want to tell our team we want to be mediocre and finish in the middle of the pack," Darner told the Green Bay Press Gazette. "We want them to strive for greatness, and we have the same goals as we had last year. We want to get to the Big Dance."

Preview: Hilltoppers (3-5) at Gaels (6-1)
Date: December 14, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Saint Mary's and Western Kentucky are both feeling pretty good about themselves heading into their matchup on the Gaels' home court Wednesday night.

The 20th-ranked Gaels (7-1) bounced back from their first defeat of the season -- a 65-51 home loss to Texas-Arlington last Thursday -- with a strong performance in an 84-53 victory over UC-Irvine on Sunday.

"We played better tonight," Gaels coach Randy Bennett said after the game. "That was the best we've played in a while."

Saint Mary's hit 56 percent of its field-goal attempts, improving its season shooting percentage to 50.9 percent, ninth best in the country. The Gaels also made 10 of 17 3-point attempts, putting them at 40.2 percent for the season.

Immediately after that strong performance, Bennett had a quick assessment of Western Kentucky.

"They beat Indiana State today," he said, obviously impressed.

Indeed, the Hilltoppers (4-5) recorded an admirable 77-59 road win on Sunday over an Indiana State team that had defeated 15th-ranked Butler four days earlier on the same court.

"Tonight was our best game, by far -- a complete game, as a team," first-year Western Kentucky coach Rick Stansbury said.

The Hilltoppers hit 53.2 percent of their shots, a marked improvement for a team that was hitting just 40.1 percent coming into the game.

"This was the most efficient we've been offensively," Stansbury said. "Tonight was our best effort of offensive toughness. That's why we shot 53 percent."

Just as significant was Western Kentucky's defensive effort, limiting the Sycamores to 37.9 percent shooting.

"We took their best two players and basically took them out of the game," Stansbury said.

Brenton Scott, Indiana State's top scorer, managed 17 points but was just 6 of 19 from the field, including 0 of 7 from long range. Matt Van Scyoc, the Sycamores' No. 2 scorer, had just one point and missed all three of his field-goal attempts after scoring 23 points against Butler.

It was Western Kentucky's first road win since Feb. 26 against Middle Tennessee.

"I'm proud of our guys," said Stanbury, a former coach at Mississippi State. "We've been fighting. Several games we would get down in the second half and hit a wall."

Western Kentucky had an 11-point lead late in the first half that Indiana State whittled down to one point early in the second half. But, instead of hitting a wall, the Hilltoppers dominated the final eight minutes to win going away.

Pancake Thomas scored 22 points for the Hilltoppers while the team's leading scorer, Que Johnson, added 15 points, and Justin Johnson collected 14 points and 10 rebounds.

That ended the Hilltoppers' four-game losing streak, which included a 39-point loss to Washington and a 19-point loss to Eastern Kentucky. The question is whether the win over Indiana State was a fluke or an indication that Western Kentucky has improved significantly.

The competition only gets stiffer as Saint Mary's is the first Top 25 team the Hilltoppers will face this season.

The Gaels got back on track against Irvine after their misstep against Texas-Arlington.

"I wasn't that concerned," Bennett said of the loss. "I knew we had a stinker."

The Gaels dropped eight spots in the rankings as a result of the loss, but did not drop completely out of the Top 25.

Center Jock Landale still leads the Gaels at 18.4 points per game, although he has not exceeded 15 points in any of his last three games.

Preview: Gauchos (1-5) at Bruins (9-0)
Date: December 14, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Second-ranked UCLA will try to build on its best start in a decade when the unbeaten Bruins play host to UC Santa Barbara in a nonconference game Wednesday night at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

UCLA (10-0) hasn't won 11 in a row at any point in a season since March 2008. The Bruins are off to their best start since beginning the 2006-07 season with 14 consecutive wins. That team went on to reach the Final Four. This team has even higher aspirations.

"Sky's the limit," freshman point guard Lonzo Ball said. "As long as we defend, who knows what the limit is. We're going for a championship this year. That's the goal and we don't play to lose."

UC Santa Barbara (1-6) is struggling in its 19th season under coach Bob Williams. The Gauchos lost five in a row to start the season, including a 96-72 loss to USC, before beating Sonoma State to secure their first victory. They are coming off a 77-68 loss to San Diego.

"We've just got to be better," Williams said. "We weren't very good offensively or defensively after the first few minutes of the game. We got off to a good start, but then we couldn't make a shot, and, on the other end, we gave up too many open looks. That's got to change."

It will take an inspired effort for UC Santa Barbara to slow a UCLA squad that ranks second in the nation in scoring at 97.5 points per game. The Bruins lead the nation in assists (239), assists per game (23.9), field-goal percentage (.562) and 3-point shooting (.471). They are on pace to break their Pac-12 Conference record of 92.3 points per game in 1967-68.

UCLA vaulted from No. 11 to No. 2 after beating then-No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 3. The Bruins followed that performance with a resounding 102-84 victory over Michigan in which they shot a sizzling 74 percent in the second half.

"I couldn't be more pleased after scoring 97 points against Kentucky and scoring 102 against what I think is a very sound defensive team in Michigan," UCLA coach Steve Alford said.

Isaac Hamilton is leading UCLA in scoring at 17.7 points per game. He is shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 45.6 percent from 3-point range.

Hamilton is one of six players who are scoring in double figures for the Bruins. T.J. Leaf is averaging 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds. Bryce Alford averages 15.6 points. Ball is averaging 15 points, 8.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds. He is second in the nation in assists and the only player in the country who is averaging at least 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

Aaron Holiday averages 13.3 points for UCLA. Thomas Welsh is averaging 11.1 points and 9.6 rebounds.

UC Santa Barbara is led by Gabe Vincent, a guard who averages 17.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Vincent had a season-high-tying 23 points in the loss to San Diego. Jalen Canty is averaging 11.3 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds for the Gauchos.
