Saturday’s six-pack

— Titans covered twice in last 10 games as a home favorite.

— Seahawks are 13-6 vs spread in their last 19 games.

— Carolina is 4-10-1 vs spread in their last 15 games.

— Lions are 6-1-1 in last 8 games as an NFC North home favorite.

— Surprising fact: the Prime Minister of Japan went to college at USC.

— Hartford 65, Boston College 63— BC is in same league as Duke, UNC, Louisville and they’ve already lost to Nicholls St and Hartford. Yikes.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a cold day

Catching up on some stuff from during the week…….

13) First of all, a football-related weather forecast; supposed to snow heavily in Green Bay all day Sunday; 6-8 inches in all. Could be Packers’ snowiest home game since 1985, so if you’re wagering or have fantasy players in that game, act accordingly.

12) Houston Rockets’ Sam Dekker is a good example of a guy working his butt off to improve his body and therefore his game, making himself a serviceable NBA player. Dekker played in only three games LY, hurt his back; he is averaging 16+ minutes a game this year.

11) College football coaching moves: Willie Taggart goes from South Florida to Oregon, Purdue hires Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm and Houston promotes OC Major Applewhite to replace the departed Tom Herman.

10) Taggart was making $1.8M at South Florida, will make $3.2M now. Brohm was making $800K at WKU, will make $3.3M now- interesting. Good luck competing against Harbaugh and Urban Meyer, by the way.

Brohm’s first game at Purdue will be against his old boss Bobby Petrino and Louisville.

9) Gonzaga 98, Washington 71— If you’re coaching in the Pac-12 and one of your better players transfers to Gonzaga, what does it say about your program? Spokane is way out of the way, dangerously close to Idaho, but they win a lot and kids like to win.

What Gonzaga did to Washington in this game was flat embarrassing— Lorenzo Romar’s team has fallen into the trap of recruiting one-and-done kids, meaning his team is always very young but with very little chance to develop team chemistry, since their better guys have at least one eye on the NBA already.

8) Tex-Arlington 66, Saint Mary’s 51— We like Arlington, but were still surprised that this game wasn’t close at all. UTA was quicker all over the court and dominated the game. In no way did the Gaels look like a top 15 team.

7) Iowa 78, Iowa State 64— People get impatient with me for not picking games in pre-conference play anymore, and I point to games like this, scores that make zero sense. Iowa isn’t a good team; Cyclones are one of the most experienced teams in America and they got waxed in this game, against an in-state rival. Go figure.

6) If Chiefs’ speedster Tyreek Hill played for the Giants, Showtime would’ve already done one (or more) movies about him and he’d have 6-7 commercials on TV every day. He’s very good and still underrated.

5) Louisiana Tech’s football team is 8-5; in only two of their 13 games was the Las Vegas pointspread single digits- Tech was favored by 10+ points eight times, an underdog of 10+ three times. That is very unusual.

4) ESPN’s Jeff Van Gundy is a great basketball analyst; he was explaining Friday night how Houston’s Clint Capela is actually an upgrade over Dwight Howard for the Rockets, because it allows Houston to easily define what they want to do on offense (pick/roll). As soon as he explained it, Rockets scored an easy basket, with Capela getting the layup.

3) CF Dexter Fowler signed with St Louis, the Cubs’ arch-rival; move allows Matt Carpenter to drop down into the middle of the Cardinals’ lineup.

2) I really like Florida State’s Darvin Cook as a running back; think he’ll be an excellent NFL player. Not sure why he’s not getting more of a push for postseason awards but he’ll get paid next year and for years to come.

1— Long time ago, I put myself thru college as a student manager of the school’s basketball team; it was mostly great fun, learned a lot plus our team was really good so that helped too.

For a year, our JV basketball coach shared an office with the school’s swimming coach. One day, a kid on the JV hoop team calls in to say he can’t come to practice that day- the swimming coach takes the call, and asks the kid for his number, so the JV coach can call him back.

“Coach already knows my number; I’m number 45.” And he hangs up.

Saturday's Tip Sheet
December 9, 2016

**Duke at UNLV**

-- For the first time in nearly a quarter-century, Duke and UNLV will meet Saturday at T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas. These storied programs haven’t faced each other since the 1991 national semifinals when Duke won a 79-77 decision over the previously-undefeated Runnin’ Rebels. Anderson Hunt’s brick at the buzzer was off the mark to give the Blue Devils the thrilling victory. Hunt had been put in a bad spot when Larry Johnson passed on an open jumper from the wing with five seconds remaining. Bobby Hurley’s pivotal 3-ball with just over a minute remaining was crucial, as it sliced UNLV’s five-point lead down to two. Jerry Tarkanian’s Rebels had run Duke out of Denver by a 103-73 count in the 1990 NCAA Tournament finals the year before.

-- As of late Friday afternoon, one offshore book had Duke (9-1 straight up, 5-4 against the spread) installed as a 20.5-point favorite.

-- Duke is playing its first true road game here, but it has played four neutral-court games outside of Durham already. The Blue Devils beat Florida 84-74 as seven-point favorites Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 158 combined points soared ‘over’ the 146.5-point total. Luke Kennard stole the show with a sensational performance that was reminiscent of the way fellow southpaw Chris Mullin used to light up MSG when he played for St. John’s in the mid-1980s. Kennard countered every UF run with one of his silky-smooth jumpers. The sophomore shooting guard knocked down 11-of-16 shots, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range, on his way to a game-high 29 points. Amile Jefferson added 24 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots. The senior power forward made 11-of-14 shots. Jayson Tatum, who was playing in just his second collegiate game, scored 22 points and pulled down eight boards.

-- Kennard is scoring a team-high 20.4 points per game. The lefty is making 52.2 percent of his shots from the field, 41.0 percent from beyond the arc and 88.1 percent from the free-throw line. Kennard is also averaging a 6.2 rebounds per game and has a 31/17 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

-- Grayson Allen is one of the team’s veterans. The junior, who played a key role in Duke’s win over Wisconsin in the finals of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, is scoring at a 15.9 PPG clip. He has been dealing with an ankle injury for a few weeks, but only missed one game. Allen has dealt out a team-high 36 assists compared to 18 turnovers. His shot has suffered as he’s making only 36.0 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from long distance.

-- Jefferson is averaging 15.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He’s also rejecting 2.0 shots per game. Frank Jackson is also scoring in double figures (14.0 PPG).

-- Tatum and Marques Bolden missed the first eight games, but they’ve played in the last two outings. In only 14 minutes of playing time, Bolden has contributed seven points, five rebounds and one blocked shot. Harry Giles, who is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, still hasn’t touched the court. However, Mike Krzyzewski has indicated that he’ll likely make his season debut before Christmas. The likely target date is a Dec. 19 home game vs. Tennessee State.

-- Duke owns quality wins over Rhode Island, Michigan State, Florida and Penn State. With the exception of the win over the Spartans at Cameron Indoor Stadium, all of those wins were on neutral floors. The Blue Devils took their only loss to Kansas by a 77-75 count at MSG as 2.5-point favorites. Kennard had 22 points, five boards and five assists in the losing effort vs. KU.

-- UNLV (5-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) returned only three players from last season’s roster. The new head coach is Marvin Menzies, who was previously at New Mexico State. Menzies scored the job after one of the stranger coaching searches in recent college basketball history. First, UNLV courted Cincinnati’s Mic Cronin, who visited Las Vegas and was given royal treatment. According to AD Tina Kunzer-Murphy, Cronin verbally agreed to contract terms before leaving Vegas to go back to Cincinnati, where he signed a contract extension with the Bearcats 36 hours later. The whole episode played out in the press and left UNLV looking extremely foolish. Everything appeared good, however, when Arkansas Little Rock’s Chris Beard was hired after an impressive NCAA Tournament showing. But then 17 days later, Beard bolted for Texas Tech because of his previous ties to the school, prompting UNLV to settle for Menzies.

-- With five UNLV players turning pro early, only two of which were drafted, Menzies was left with a stiff challenge in filling out the roster. He went about it by signing a pair of grad transfers, five freshmen and three juco transfers.

-- UNLV is off its worst loss of the season at Arizona State, where the Sun Devils captured a 97-73 win as seven-point home favorites. Jalen Poyser scored a team-best 20 points, while Tyrell Green added 18 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort.

-- UNLV has posted a 1-1 spread record in a pair of underdog situations. The Runnin’ Rebels lost 63-59 to TCU but took the cash as 5.5-point home ‘dogs. They took their other loss of the year in the opener, as South Alabama came to Thomas & Mack and won a 76-68 decision as a six-point road ‘dog.

-- Poyner, a sophomore guard, is averaging team-highs in scoring (17.5 PPG) and assists (3.9 APG). Christian Jones, a grad transfer from St. John’s, is averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. Green (12.8 PPG) is hitting 48.5 percent of his shots from downtown and pulling down 6.2 RPG.

-- UNLV has won four of its six home games while compiling a 5-1 spread record.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (4-4) for the Rebels, but they’ve seen the ‘under’ go 4-2 in their six home contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 7-2 overall for Duke, but the ‘over’ has hit in two of its last three outings.

-- ESPN will provide the broadcast at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

**Michigan at UCLA**

-- UCLA (9-0 SU, 7-2 ATS) has had all week to move past a monster 97-92 upset win over Kentucky as an 11-point underdog last Saturday at Rupp Arena. Six players scored in double figures led by Isaac Hamilton’s 19 points. T.J. Leaf produced 17 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, one steal and one blocked shot, while Lonzo Ball, Bryce Alford and Thomas Welsh scored 14 points apiece. Ball, a dynamic freshman point guard, finished with seven assists and six boards. The Bruins made 35-of-66 attempts from the field (53.0%), including 10-of-23 from long distance (43.5%).

-- As of late Friday afternoon, the Bruins were favored by 9.5 points at one offshore shop.

-- UCLA leads the nation in field-goal percentage (55.1%) and 3-point shooting (45.4%). Also, the Bruins are second in the country in scoring (97.0 PPG).

-- Steve Alford’s team is unbeaten in five home games at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins are 3-2 ATS.

-- Hamilton is leading UCLA in scoring with an 18.1 PPG average. The senior shooting guard has made 45.3 percent of his launches from 3-point land. Leaf (17.2 PPG) is pulling down 9.4 RPG and has made 67.4 percent of his shots from the field. Alford, the senior guard who is the head coach’s son, is averaging 15.3 PPG with a 25/11 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Ball, a true freshman who was a five-star recruit, is averaging 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 9.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game. Ball has drained 55.4 percent of his shots from the field and 43.5 percent from downtown. He has a stellar 84/24 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Ball has dished out 10 assists or more in four games.

-- Michigan (7-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) has been an underdog just once this year, beating SMU 76-54 as a 1.5-point ‘dog at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Derrick Walton Jr. led the winners with 23 points and five assists without a turnover.

-- Michigan lost 61-46 at South Carolina as a three-point road favorite on Nov. 23. The Wolverines took their second loss at home to Va. Tech (73-70) a week later as 6.5-point ‘chalk.’ They’ve won back-to-back games since then.

-- Michigan is off a 53-50 win over Texas on Tuesday night in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines failed to cover the number for a third straight game as 9.5-point favorites. They scored the last five points of the game. Sophomore forward Moritz Wagner produced the go-ahead bucket at crunch time and then blocked a shot by Texas’s Eric Davis with five seconds left. Wagner finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Walton had more turnovers (five) than assists (two) and scored only seven points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field. D.J. Wilson and Duncan Robinson contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.

-- John Beilein’s squad is ranked 10th in the nation in scoring defense (58.2 PPG). The Wolverines are eighth in free-throw shooting, burying 79.1 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe.

-- Michigan has a balanced scoring attack with seven players averaging at least 6.9 PPG. Zak Irvin is scoring a team-best 13.6 PPG. Walton is averaging 12.1 points and 3.8 RPG while dishing out 35 assists compared to 18 turnovers.

-- The ‘over’ is 6-3 overall for the Bruins, 4-1 in their home games.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-2 overall for the Wolverines, 1-0 in their lone road assignment.

-- These schools have met nine times since 1998 when the Bruins captured an 85-72 win over Michigan as a 6.5-point underdog in a Round of 32 matchup at the Ga. Dome in Atlanta. (Baron Davis tore his ACL in that game.) Since then, they have split eight games. In the last encounter in Ann Arbor on Nov. 23 of 2011, Michigan cruised to a 79-63 victory as a 5.5-point home ‘chalk.’

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- A pair of unbeaten teams and former Big East rivals will collide at noon Eastern in Newark, N.J., at the Never Forget Tribute Classic. CBS will have the telecast with Villanova, the defending national champion, taking on Notre Dame, which has advanced to the Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons. As of late Friday afternoon, an offshore book had Villanova (9-0 SU, 5-4 ATS) favored by six points. Jay Wright’s squad has won eight of its nine games by double-digit margins. The Wildcats took the cash in their only prior single-digit ‘chalk’ spot by winning 79-76 at Purdue as 2.5-point road favorites. Josh Hart leads ‘Nova in scoring (17.6 PPG), assists (3.8 APG) and rebounds (6.7 RPG). Notre Dame (9-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) has won seven of its nine games by double-digit margins. The Fighting Irish has three quality wins over Iowa at home and over Northwestern and Colorado on a neutral floor.

-- Cincinnati will visit Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on Butler at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1. One offshore had the Bulldogs listed as five-point home favorites late Friday afternoon. Butler just took its first loss of the year a few nights ago, coughing up a late lead in a 72-71 loss at Indiana State. The Bearcats, who are ninth in the nation in scoring defense (58.1 PPG), have seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 overall. They’ve been an underdog once this year in their lone road assignment, winning 55-54 at Iowa State last Thursday as 6.5-point ‘dogs.

-- UT Arlington won its seventh straight game and handed Saint Mary’s its first loss on Thursday night. The Mavericks beat up on the Gaels 65-51 as 15-point road underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a 10/1 return (paid $1,000 on $100 wagers). Scott Cross’s team also has a win at Texas during its winning streak. Since Nov. 12, the Mavs haven’t had more than two days off between games, but they now have eight days off until playing at Bradley. Don’t be surprised to find Scott Cross’s team in the Round of 32 come March.

-- Wisconsin and Marquette are set to square off at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. One offshore had the Badgers favored by 2.5 points late Friday afternoon.

-- East Tennessee State brings a five-game winning streak into Saturday’s showdown at Dayton. The Buccaneers, who were 7.5-point ‘dogs late Friday afternoon, are led by T.J. Cromer, who is averaging a team-best 18.2 PPG.

Saturday's NCAAB Top 25 betting cheat sheet

Duke plays their first true road game of the season when they visit UNLV as 23.5-pt favorites Saturday.

No. 1 Villanova vs No. 22 Notre Dame (6.5, 146.5)

* The Wildcats' top five scorers all shoot at least 40 percent from 3-point range, led by Kris Jenkins (26 3-pointers) and Hart (18). In Tuesday's 10-point win against La Salle, Jalen Brunson scored 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting while Hart chipped in 21 points and eight boards. The team committed only six turnovers versus La Salle and will need to take care of the ball again Saturday in order to keep pace with the high-scoring Fighting Irish.

* The Irish have to be thrilled with the play of junior forward Bonzie Colson (17.1 points, 11.1 rebounds), who has posted six consecutive double-doublers and also is now a 3-point threat. He drained three 3-pointers against Fort Wayne and already has eight 3s this season after draining a total of five in 19 attempts during his freshman and sophomore seasons. V.J. Beachem (16.8 points), Steve Vasturia (16.4) and Matt Farrell (12.4) provide additional support for the 10th-ranked offense in the nation (88.9 points).

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Fighting Irish are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 4-0 in Wildcats last 4 vs. Atlantic Coast.
* Over is 5-1 in Fighting Irish last 6 vs. Big East.

Cleveland State at No. 19 Purdue (-26, 137)

* Bobby Word shot 9-of-12 from the floor, including five 3-pointers, en route to a career-high 25 points in the win over Western Michigan. Demonte Flannigan added 20 points and six rebounds for the sixth 20-point game of his career while Rob Edwards scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds as the Vikings shot a season-high 58.6 percent from the field. "We were finally able to put 40 minutes together," Cleveland State coach Gary Waters told reporters. "Our focus at halftime was to shut them down defensively and we did that holding them to 36 percent in the second half."

* Haas led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds while Vince Edwards provided a spark off the bench by adding four 3-pointers to also finish with 16 points in the win over Arizona State in the Jimmy V Classic in New York City. Ryan Cline scored 15 points, Basil Smotherman had 13 and Carsen Edwards and Dakota Mathias each tallied 12 as the Boilermakers finished with six players in double digits against the Sun Devils. "We were just being simple and making plays," Edwards told reporters. "We were just playing team ball."

TRENDS:

* Vikings are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
* Boilermakers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 4-1 in Vikings last 5 overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Boilermakers last 5 home games.

No. 20 Arizona at No. 11 Missouri (7, 134.5)

* The Wildcats have had to adjust their rotation with point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright sidelined with a high-ankle sprain, leaving them with a limited bench. The backbone of that rotation is a trio of freshmen in Rawle Alkins (11.8 points), Kobi Simmons (11.3) and Markkanen (17.8, 7.2 rebounds). Ristic (9.7 points, 6.3 rebounds) combines with Markkanen to give the Wildcats two 7-footers, and the latter can stretch the defense as he shoots a team-best 46.3 percent from 3-point range.

* The Tigers have won four of five, with an embarrassing loss to North Carolina Central marring an otherwise solid stretch for one of the nation’s youngest teams. Missouri’s improvement over coach Kim Anderson’s first two years is evident despite the fact nine of the team’s top 10 scorers are freshmen or sophomores. Freshman Frankie Hughes (14 points) leads the way, but sophomore Kevin Puryear (12.5, 6.4 rebounds) topped the team with 19 points against Miami (Ohio) and senior forward Russell Woods (7.5, 5.6) is coming off his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win.
* Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 5-1 in Tigers last 6 games following a ATS win.
* Over is 8-2 in Tigers last 10 games following a straight up win.

No. 17 Wisconsin at No. 10 Marquette (4.5, 147.5)

* Bronson Koenig drilled four 3-pointers en route to 21 points in the win over Idaho State, and is 14-of-26 from beyond the arc in his last three games. Ethan Happ added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and pulled down 12 rebounds to notch his fourth double-double in the last six games while Nigel Hayes, who is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, finished with 11 points against the Bengals. The Badgers, who won the battle of the boards 47-21, are ranked fourth nationally in rebound margin (+14.5), and they hope to take advantage of Marquette's four-guard system.

* Freshman guard Sam Hauser matched a career high with 19 points and senior center Luke Fischer added 18 on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor to lift the Golden Eagles over Fresno State. "It's really exciting to play them (Wisconsin) and it's a big game for all of us," Hauser told reporters. "We're 2-0 so far this week and looking to make it 3-0." Jajuan Johnson flirted with a double-double as he produced 14 points and eight rebounds while Traci Carter, who is averaging 3.6 assists this season, missed Tuesday's game with a sore left knee but could recover in time to face the Badgers.
TRENDS:

* Badgers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.
* Golden Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Under is 9-2 in Badgers last 11 games following a ATS win.
* Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Marquette.
* Badgers are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

Texas Southern at No. 13 Louisville (OFF)

* Well-traveled junior guard Zach Lofton (21 points per game), who is on his fourth college team and playing Division I basketball for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign, is a two-time SWAC Player of the Week winner and has already scored at least 24 points four times. Sophomore forward and reigning conference player of the year Derrick Griffin (12.1 points, 9.4 boards) ranks second in Division I in offensive rebounding (5.1) and is tied for 11th in double-doubles (five) after setting a league record with 19 last season. Demontrae Jefferson - a 5-7 freshman guard who was rated as high as a four-star recruit by Rivals 150 in 2015 - is expected to make his Tigers' debut Saturday.

* The frontcourt took center stage Wednesday, as senior center Mangok Mathiang (7.2 points, 6.4 rebounds) needed only 22 minutes to collect 15 points - two off his career high - and six boards, while athletic junior forward Jaylen Johnson (9.2, 8.2) contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocks after seeing his minutes reduced recently. Sophomore Deng Adel (9.9, 4.7) posted his first double-double against Southern Illinois with 12 points and a career-high 12 boards, nearly doubling his previous personal best of seven last season. Leading scorer Donovan Mitchell (11.3 points) has failed to score in double figures in three straight outings, but the sophomore guard paces the ACC with 2.4 steals per game.

TRENDS:

* Tigers are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
* Cardinals are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games.
* Over is 5-0 in Tigers last 5 overall.
* Under is 10-2-1 in Cardinals last 13 games following a straight up win.

La Salle vs No. 17 Georgetown (-3.5, 156.5)

* The Explorers, who have never defeated a top-ranked team, found itself within four points on a Pookie Powell layup with just over a minute remaining, but the Wildcats used free throws over the final 65 seconds to hold on for the victory. Things might have been different had Syracuse transfer and team scoring leader B.J. Johnson (17.9 points per game) not found himself in foul trouble for most of the game, finishing with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting in just 26 minutes of action. Jordan Price (17.1) was also largely ineffective, scoring nine points while adding six rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes.

* While Pryor and his team-best 20.8 points per game garner most of the attention, junior guard L.J. Peak has been just as important to the Hoyas' home winning streak. The junior guard recorded 10 assists in a one-sided victory over Coppin State, and followed that up by pouring in 22 points and hauling in eight rebounds in the victory over Elon. Forward Jessie Govan chipped in with 13 points against the Phoenix and is shooting a red-hot 9-of-11 from the floor over his last two games; he's at 61.7 percent for the season, well ahead of his freshman rate of 48 percent.

TRENDS:

* Explorers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
* Hoyas are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
* Hoyas are 1-11 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games.
* Over is 4-0 in Hoyas last 4 Saturday games.

No. 25 Ohio at Iona (1, 150)

* The Iona Gaels are ranked 174 for offensive field goal percentage shooting 43.7% while attempting 60.9 shots per game. The Gaels shooting percentages include 75.6% for free throw percentage and 36.2% for three point percentage so far this season.

* The Ohio Bobcats are ranked 229 for offensive field goal percentage shooting 42.5% while attempting 63.2 shots per game. The Bobcats shooting percentages include 68.2% for free throw percentage and 41.9% for three point percentage so far this season.

TRENDS:

* Bobcats are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Gaels are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* Under is 4-1 in Bobcats last 5 games following a straight up win.
* Under is 4-0 in Gaels last 4 home games.

VMI at No. 16 West Virginia (-36, 152.5)

* Senior guard QJ Peterson averages team bests of 20.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals, and needs 13 points to move into seventh on the school's all-time scoring list. Peterson scored a season-high 29 points in the Keydets' 88-72 loss at Virginia Tech on Nov. 19 in its only other game against a Power 5 Conference team. Senior guard Julian Eleby (13.0 points per game) and senior forward Trey Chapman (10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds) are VMI's other double-digit scorers with Chapman shooting 50 percent from the field - well above the team number of 40.5.

* The Mountaineers boast a deep roster as 13 players average at least nine minutes and 12 score at least four points. Sophomore forward Esa Ahmad leads the team at a modest 12.8 points per game while senior forward Nathan Adrian (11.6 points, club highs of 6.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists) is the only other player averaging double-figure points. Carter (9.8 points, 3.9 assists) is also the top free-throw shooter at 84.6 percent.

TRENDS:

* Keydets are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
* Keydets are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
* Mountaineers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win.
* Under is 4-0-1 in Keydets last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.
* Under is 5-1 in Mountaineers last 6 Saturday games.

Nebraska at No. 3 Kansas (-20, 142)

* While the Cornhuskers have held each of their last five opponents to at least 14 points below their season scoring average, they have been unable to take advantage on the other end and are shooting 35.6 percent from the field during their 1-4 stretch, failing to surpass 40 percent shooting in any of their losses. Leading scorer Tai Webster (17.2 points) scored 20 against Creighton and continues to be a bright spot offensively, producing four 20-point performances this season and 10 straight double-digit scoring efforts dating back to last season. Sophomore Ed Morrow (10.1 points, team-high 8.1 rebounds) grabbed a career-high 13 boards Wednesday and is averaging 10.3 over his last three contests.

* The Jayhawks' guard-heavy lineup has been lighting it up from long-range over the last four games, shooting 56.3 percent beyond the arc over that time while averaging 13.5 3-pointers after draining an Allen Fieldhouse-record 15 3-pointers against UMKC. Senior Frank Mason (20.8 points, 5.3 assists), who ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring and third in assists, is coming off a career-high tying 30-point effort and also paces Kansas in field-goal percentage (58.9) - the best mark by a Division I guard averaging at least 20 points. Freshman guard Josh Jackson (14.6 points, team-best 6.1 rebounds) posted his second double-double in the last five games with 19 points and 12 boards versus the Kangaroos.

TRENDS:

* Cornhuskers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* Jayhawks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
* Under is 8-1 in Cornhuskers last 9 games following a ATS loss.
* Road team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

Houston Baptist at No. 9 Indiana (26.5, 153.5)

* The Huskies took on Texas Tech, New Mexico and Marquette early in the season and lost by an average of 21.3 points, but they do have depth with 10 players averaging at least 11 minutes and four points. Josh Ibarra, a 6-11 junior center, had 16 points and 12 rebounds in the victory over Saint Peter’s to push his averages to 10.7 and 6.4, respectively, while shooting 56.1 percent from the field overall. Senior forward Colter Lasher leads the team in scoring (13.1), but must rebound from a 2-for-10 shooting effort last time out.

* Sophomore forward Juwan Morgan has filled in for Anunoby quite well, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the last two contests while draining all 12 of his shot attempts. Junior guard James Blackmon Jr. continues his solid play, after missing more than half of last season with a knee injury, averaging 16.7 points to go along with 7.1 rebounds and 40.4 percent shooting from 3-point range. Blackmon’s backcourt partner Robert Johnson has also been efficient, connecting on 55.7 percent of his shots from the field and averaging 12.8 points – second on the team.

TRENDS:

* Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
* Hoosiers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
* Over is 4-0 in Huskies last 4 games following a straight up win.

Tennessee State at No. 20 N.C. State (-8.5, 148.5)

* Martin (13.1 points, team-high 10.0 rebounds per game) shares the club scoring lead with senior guard Tahjere McCall, who also paces the Tigers in assists (4.5 per game) and steals (2.6). McCall recorded 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and sank the winning bucket with 8.4 seconds remaining against Lipscomb, while Martin posting his fourth double-double of the season (16 points, 12 rebounds). * Under is 4-1 in Tigers last 5 overall.
* Over is 6-0 in Wolfpack last 6 games following a straight up win.

No. 23 Cincinnati at No. 15 Butler (-3.5, 129)

* Washington averages 17.3 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 blocks and is shooting 59.2 percent from the field to lead the way for the Bearcats, who have held six of eight opponents under 60 points. Sophomore guard Jacob Evans has been almost as efficient as Washington while scoring 15.6 per game on 55.1 percent shooting from the field and 82.8 at the free-throw line. There is plenty of room for improvement as senior guard Troy Caupain is off to a relatively slow start, averaging 9.5 points on 37.7 percent from the field after scoring 13 per game a season ago.

* Under is 9-1 in Bearcats last 10 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points.
* Under is 5-1 in Bulldogs last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

No. 4 Duke at UNLV (22.5, 153.5)

* The Blue Devils are beginning to look like the juggernaut they were on paper to begin the season, as Luke Kennard (20.4 points) continues to put up huge numbers to lead an impressive mix of veterans and freshmen. Grayson Allen (15.9 points, 4.1 assists) continues to play through nagging injuries and pairs with Amile Jefferson (15.6 points, 10.3 rebounds) to give Duke a battle-tested nucleus. The freshman class is special, though, as Frank Jackson (14 points) has proven all season and Tatum, in particular, has shown by averaging 16 points in two games since returning from injury.

* The Runnin’ Rebels returned only three players from last campaign’s team, so they have faced some early growing pains. Sophomore guard Jalen Poyser has made huge strides from a season ago, leading the squad with 17.5 points and 3.9 assists while coming off his third 20-point effort of 2016-17. Big men Tyrell Green (12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds) and Dwayne Morgan (10, 7.6) are the other two returnees, while a number of transfers have stepped into key roles.

TRENDS:

* Blue Devils are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Mountain West.
* Runnin' Rebels are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
* Under is 9-2 in Blue Devils last 11 non-conference games.
* Under is 4-1 in Runnin' Rebels last 5 home games.

Utah at No. 14 Xavier (-11.5, 146)

* Kuzma recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds last time out and leads five players averaging in double figures scoring, including 6-10 junior Tyler Rawson (11.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 51.9 percent shooting). Senior guard Lorenzo Bonam, who is one of two starters returning from an NCAA Tournament team, averages 15 points and makes 58.8 of his shots from the field. Junior guard JoJo Zamora scored 17 points against Utah Valley to raise his season average to 11.4 and sophomore backcourt mate Parker Van Dyke has made 13-of-30 from 3-point range.

* While Bluiett was topping his career high in scoring by two and raising his average to a team-high 19.3, fellow junior guard J.P. Macura (14.7) struggled for the second straight game. Macura missed 20 of his 25 shots – 10-of-11 from behind the 3-point arc -- against Baylor and Colorado combined while sophomore guard Edmond Sumner (14.6) went 3-for-11 on Wednesday. Senior forward RaShid Gaston was in the starting lineup for the first time against Colorado and responded with his second double-double – posting 14 points and 11 rebounds.

TRENDS:

* Utes are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Musketeers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
* Over is 7-1 in Utes last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Over is 8-2 in Utes last 10 overall.

Akron at No. 8 Gonzaga (-16.5, 145.5)

* The Zips are averaging 79.8 points per game and topped that on Wednesday when they rolled to an 87-63 victory over Coppin State. Senior center Isaiah Johnson averages a team-best 15.2 points while shooting a torrid 70.3 percent from the field while junior guard Antino Jackson (12-point average) is also playing solid basketball. Junior guard Jimond Ivey (9.1 average) tallied a career-best 20 points against Coppin State.

* Balance has been a key for the Bulldogs as six players average at least 9.7 points and four players are collecting more than five rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Josh Perkins (12.5 points) and senior center Przemek Karnowski (12.2 points, team-best six rebounds) were expected to be good but freshman power forward Zach Collins has been better than forecasted by averaging 10.6 points off the bench and shooting 69.6 percent from the field. Junior forward Johnathan Williams is shooting 58.6 percent from the field while averaging 9.9 points and senior shooting guard Jordan Mathews is averaging 9.7 points despite a porous 35.1 percent mark from the field.

TRENDS:

* Zips are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games.
* Bulldogs are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Over is 8-2 in Zips last 10 road games.
* Over is 5-0 in Bulldogs last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
* Over is 10-1 in Bulldogs last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

No. 20 Michigan at No. 2 UCLA (-9.5, 150.5)

* Irvin leads Michigan in scoring at 13.6 points a game, an average that's below the four leading scorers for UCLA, and the other two Wolverines who are averaging double figures are Derrick Walton Jr. (12.1) and Moritz Wagner (10.4). Walton and Wagner can do some damage from long distance, as they're a combined 32-for-75 from 3-point range, so UCLA's perimeter defense needs to be on their toes. D.J. Wilson has been Michigan's most active player inside and comes into this game averaging 7.7 points and 7.7 rebounds, but the 6-10 forward can also step back and hit a 3-pointer when needed.

* If they Bruins hope to establish their longest winning streak since the 2012-13 season, they'll just need to keep playing like they've been, starting with their impressive scoring balance among their starting five. In the win against Kentucky, the starters each scored from 14 to 19 points, with Aaron Holiday adding another 13 off the bench. Ball, Holiday, Isaac Hamilton, T.J. Leaf, Bryce Alford and Thomas Welsh each average from 11.1 to 18.1 points and only Alford is shooting below 51 percent from the floor (44.9).

TRENDS:

* Wolverines are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games.
* Bruins are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Under is 7-0 in Wolverines last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
* Over is 4-1 in Bruins last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

No. 23 New Mexico at New Mexico State (-2.5, 142.5)

* The New Mexico St. Aggies are ranked 106 for offensive field goal percentage shooting 45.6% while attempting 52.9 shots per game. The Aggies shooting percentages include 71.8% for free throw percentage and 32.7% for three point percentage so far this season.

* The New Mexico Lobos are ranked 12 for offensive field goal percentage shooting 50.1% while attempting 52.3 shots per game. The Lobos shooting percentages include 73.9% for free throw percentage and 31.3% for three point percentage so far this season.

TRENDS:

* Lobos are 16-4-2 ATS in their last 22 vs. Western Athletic.
* Aggies are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. Mountain West.
* Over is 4-1 in Lobos last 5 overall.
* Under is 4-1 in Aggies last 5 home games.
* Lobos are 5-0-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in New Mexico St.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Josh Hart scored a career-high 37 points and No. 1 Villanova rallied from an 11-point deficit to beat No. 23 Notre Dame 74-66 on Saturday at the Prudential Center.

Hart was the only Villanova (10-0) player to score in double figures. He was 10 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc, and he made all 14 of his free throw attempts.

Matt Farrell and Steve Vasturia had 18 points each for Notre Dame (9-1), which entered the game as one of eight remaining unbeaten Division I teams.

Villanova took its first lead of the game at 57-56 after Eric Paschall blocked Vasturia's 3-pointer with 9:15 left. Hart assisted on a layup by Jalen Brunson at 9:09 to give the Wildcats the lead.

The teams exchanged the lead from there until Villanova pulled away in the final minute.

Farrell made his first six shots including a driving layup at the halftime buzzer that gave Notre Dame a 41-36 lead.

---

No. 2 UCLA 102, MICHIGAN 84

LOS ANGELES (AP) - T.J. Leaf scored 21 points, fellow freshman Lonzo Ball added 19 and UCLA shot 67 percent in beating Michigan to improve to 10-0.

Bryce Alford added 18 points and Aaron Holiday had 17 for the Bruins, who made 15 3-pointers, just off the school-record 18 they had in winning their season opener against Pacific. Holiday hit all five of his 3-point attempts. The Bruins topped 100 points for the fourth time this season.

Zak Irvin scored 18 points to lead the Wolverines (7-3).

---

No. 3 KANSAS 89, NEBRASKA 72

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Frank Mason III had 18 points and seven assists without a turnover, and Josh Jackson and Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points apiece for Kansas.

The Jayhawks (9-1) had no trouble with their old conference foe despite playing without forward Carlton Bragg Jr., who is suspended indefinitely. Bragg was charged Friday with misdemeanor battery.

Bragg sat on the bench in street clothes, watching as Devonte Graham scored 14 points and Landen Lucas added 12, as the Jayhawks rolled to their 18th consecutive win over the Huskers and their 46th in a row at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tai Webster led Nebraska (5-5) with 22 points. Ed Morrow Jr. finished with 16.

---

No. 5 DUKE 94, UNLV 45

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Grayson Allen shot 75 percent from the field - including a perfect 7 of 7 in the second half - en route to a career-high 34 points to lead Duke in the first college basketball game ever played at T Mobile Arena.

Luke Kennard had 16 points and five rebounds for the Blue Devils (10-1), while Jayson Tatum had 13 points and five rebounds, and Amile Jefferson contributed with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Duke, which is 4-1 on a neutral court, jumped out to a 20-3 lead in the first 7 minutes and never looked back, as it outscored the Runnin' Rebels 52-19 in the second half.

The Rebels (5-4) tried to make a couple of runs to challenge Duke, getting as close as 38-26 late in the first half after an 8-0 spurt.

Jalen Poyser had 16 points for UNLV.

---

No. 8 GONZAGA 61, AKRON 43

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Przemek Karnowski scored 14 points and Gonzaga beat Akron in a defensive battle, lifting the Zags to the best start in program history.

Nigel Williams-Goss added 11 points for Gonzaga (10-0), which has won 10 straight to open the season for the first time since joining Division I in 1958.

Isaiah Johnson scored 11 points, and Jimond Ivey had 10 for Akron (7-3).

---

No. 9 INDIANA 103, HOUSTON BAPTIST 61

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - James Blackmon Jr. scored 18 points and Robert Johnson added 16 for Indiana.

Thomas Bryant finished with nine points and 13 rebounds for the Hoosiers, who outrebounded Houston Baptist 45-31.

The Hoosiers (8-1) ran their offense with a heavy emphasis on ball movement, tallying a total of 19 assists on 33 field goals.

The Huskies (3-5) trailed Indiana by as many as 42 points. The Hoosiers made 12 3-pointers, while Houston Baptist finished with only two. Indiana had five players score in double figures and relied heavily on its bench. The Hoosiers' bench outscored Houston Baptist's bench 37-9.

Colter Lasher finished with 18 points for the Huskies.

---

No. 11 LOUISVILLE 102, TEXAS SOUTHERN 71

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Quentin Snider scored 15 points, V.J. King added 13 and No. 11 Louisville overcame a cold shooting start to give Hall of Famer Rick Pitino his 400th victory as the Cardinals' coach.

Pitino, who last month earned his 750th career victory, improved to 400-163 in his 16th season with Louisville. His Cardinals (9-1) first had to shake off early sluggishness and a 4-for-21 start from the field to pull away from the scrappy, athletic Tigers and win their fourth in a row.

Louisville made 30 of 57 shots the rest of the way (53 percent) to finish at 44 percent from the field overall while holding TSU (4-5) to 35 percent.

Donovan Mitchell had 12 points, Jaylen Johnson and Deng Adel 11 each and Mangok Mathiang 10 for Louisville.

Freshman point guard Demontrae Jefferson debuted with 27 points for Texas Southern, which lost its fourth straight.

---

No. 13 XAVIER 77, UTAH 69

CINCINNATI (AP) - J.P. Macura emerged from his shooting slump by scoring 18 points, and RaShid Gaston helped Xavier get the edge up front against the nation's top rebounding team.

The Musketeers (8-2) were coming off back-to-back road losses that featured long scoring droughts. Xavier's balanced offense built a 15-point lead in the first half, and the Musketeers stayed ahead the rest of the way.

Gaston had 11 points and 14 rebounds, helping Xavier to a 33-28 edge on the boards. The Utes (6-2) came in averaging 47.7 rebounds per game. Gaston had nine points and 10 rebounds - one less than Utah's total - in the first half.

Macura was 5 of 7 from beyond the arc after going only 2 of 16 in his last three games.

Freshman Devon Daniels had a career-high 19 points for the Utes.

---

No. 15 WEST VIRGINIA 90, VMI 55

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Daxter Miles Jr. scored a season-high 20 points and West Virginia overcame an early lull to give coach Bob Huggins his 799th career win.

West Virginia (8-1) followed up a 53-point win over Western Carolina on Wednesday night with a lackluster first half to finish its final exams week.

Miles went 6 of 9 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. He missed the first three games with an unspecified illness and was ejected for throwing an elbow in the first half of a close win over Virginia last Saturday.

QJ Peterson scored 17 points for VMI (1-7), which was limited to three field goals over the final 12 minutes of the game.

---

No. 16 BUTLER 75, No. 22 CINCINNATI 65

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kelan Martin scored 20 points and was the catalyst in two key second-half runs for Butler.

The Bulldogs (9-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season by extending their home winning streak against non-conference opponents to 34 games.

Troy Caupain scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Bearcats (7-2) and Gary Clark added 16, also a season high.

Martin's three-point play spurred a 14-4 run that gave Butler a 51-43 lead with 11:51 left. Martin followed that with six points in a 12-5 spurt, sealing the win.

---

No. 17 WISCONSIN 93, MARQUETTE 84

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Bronson Koenig scored 18 points, and Ethan Happ scored all 11 of his in the second half for Wisconsin.

Happ dominated the paint after halftime after being bogged down with foul trouble in the first half. The 6-foot-10 Happ added five rebounds and negated the inside presence of Marquette's 6-11 center Luke Fischer.

Wisconsin (9-2) went on a 16-0 run in the second half to help build an 18-point lead with 6:44 left. Marquette (7-3) got within eight with 2:22 left but never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Markus Howard led Marquette with 22 points.

---

No. 18 PURDUE 77, CLEVELAND ST. 53

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Isaac Haas scored 14 points, Caleb Swanigan had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Dakota Mathias added 12 points on four 3-pointers for Purdue.

The Boilermakers (8-2) finished the first half on a 12-0 run to lead 41-20 and never were threatened thereafter, leading by as many as 27 points in the second half.

Bobby Word had 14 points to lead Cleveland State (3-6), which shot only 26.7 percent (8 of 30) during the pivotal first half.

Vince Edwards added 11 points for the Boilermakers, who have won each of their past three games by at least 24 points.

---

No. 20 ARIZONA 79, MISSOURI 60

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Rawle Alkins had 19 points and nine rebounds for Arizona, while Kobi Simmons had 19 points and Kadeem Allen added 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Wildcats (8-2) jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 3:12, eventually taking a 25-8 lead with 10:29 remaining in the first half. From that point, Missouri outscored Arizona 28-16 in the half, including a 7-0 run to end the half.

The Tigers (5-4) continued to chip away at Arizona's lead, eventually cutting the deficit to 45-41 early in the second half. However, the Wildcats responded with a 26-4 run that included a Missouri scoring drought of 6:59.

Kevin Puryear had 11 points and seven rebounds for Missouri.

Sunday’s Den: Running Diary of a sports Saturday…….

11:45am— I am not a morning person; like to stay up late and then sleep late, so dragging my butt out of bed at 11:25 for some Rice Krispies and the start of the Temple-DePaul game seems like an even worse idea now that Temple leads 13-1 5:30 into the game.

This is part of a HoopHall doubleheader in the Miami Heat’s arena and there might’ve been 100 people in the arena when the game started. Players probably had their pregame meal at 7:30am. Coaches will do most anything to get their teams on national TV.

12:05— Mercifully, games are starting that have people in the stands.

Arizona is playing with seven scholarship players at Missouri, due to injury/eligiblity issues. Missouri hasn’t been any good since Frank Haith bolted for Tulsa. Supposedly Missouri has a kid who is a real good scorer who becomes eligible for their next game, so that should help the Tigers.

UMass-Providence from the Dunkin’ Donuts Center; every time I watch a Providence home game, I get hungry for a jelly donut and a hot chocolate.

Dunkin’ Donuts have drive-thru windows (I’ve never used one); seems to me if you’re sucking down donuts, least you can do is get out of the car to buy them.

Villanova-Notre Dame is the best noon game, from the arena in New Jersey where the NHL’s Devils play. The great Bill Raftery is on this game; met him in Syracuse close to 30 years ago. Good guy, as friendly in person as he seems on TV.

Notre Dame leads early 15-6; Mike Brey is an underrated coach.

12:50— Arizona was up 17 at Missouri, but Tigers cut lead to 41-36 at the half. Sean Miller looks like a guy in a bar at 3am who just lost his job— tie undone, frazzled. He’s never been in the Final Four at a school where Final Fours are expected and his team is dangerously thin this season.

Good one in Newark; Notre Dame is better than expected- they lead Villanova 41-36 at the half of a high-level game. Could easily be an NCAA tournament game.

I was in the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas when Villanova won the national title last April; great fun. Opening Day of baseball, last college hoop game of the year- first Monday in April has become one of the better days of the sports year.

1:25— CBS’ Carter Blackburn is one of the best play-by-play guys on TV; he is working with Raftery today on the Villanova game. Few years ago, he was working a Conference USA game with Pete Gillen when Rice’s mascot Sammie the Owl was ejected for bitching (hooting?) at a referee. Blackburn should be doing NFL games on the network; someday he’ll call a Final Four.

Easy way for college basketball to increase scoring in its games: allow continuation baskets after fouls, the way they do in the NBA. Would be simple enough to do, makes the game more fun.

1:45— Final: Temple 74, DePaul 65— Blue Demons fought back, but they’re not very good.

ESPNU had a live Pop Warner football game from Florida on TV this morning. Seriously? They televise 12-year old kids playing football? Thought that was only at the Little League World Series in August. No wonder I like to sleep late.

Sean Miller can relax: his Arizona team went on a 21-0 run, leads Mizzou by 22 with 2:00 left.

Remember the time when Pitt’s Jerome Lane dunked in a game and shattered the backboard while Raftery screamed “Send it in Jerome!!!” on live TV? Miller assisted on that dunk.

2:05— Villanova 74, Notre Dame 66— If you won this game laying 6.5 points with the Wildcats, you had the wrong side in this game, but you covered. Thats an interesting debate; people will say “I won, how could they be the wrong side?” but sometimes the covering team lucked out. Notre Dame controlled this game for 36:00 but faded down the stretch- couldn’t hit that one shot to cover the number.

Odd bowl matchup: North Texas (+16.5) went to West Point Oct 22 and upset Army 35-18; UNT was +6 in turnovers in game where Cadets outgained North Texas 396-320- this is the only rematch of this bowl season. Favorites won/covered the Heart of Dallas Bowl the last five years, with all five games decided by 13+ points. Favorites rarely dominate bowl games.

Mediocre set of 2:00 TV games; I’m focusing on Rhode Island-Houston, Wisconsin-Marquette.

2:45— URI is up 42-37; Rams have lot of injuries, seems like every year.

Former major league pitcher Anthony Varvaro (relieved in 166 games in a 6-year MLB career) made over $2M in his baseball career, but now he has a new job— he will be a police officer with the Port Authority Police of NY/NJ- he pitched for the Red Sox’ AAA team this past summer. Interesting career change.

3:02— Halftime: Marquette 40, Wisconsin 35- Best game going on right now, Katin Reinhardt plays for Marquette, his third college (UNLV, USC) in five years. College coaches are like NBA GMs now, poaching other teams for unhappy kids who might catch lightning in a bottle with a new team for one season. This is why teams have very little depth; unhappy subs are constantly transferring. The grass is always greener somewhere else.

But what do these kids do when they become adults and join the real world? Reinhardt isn’t an NBA player, so he’ll play in Europe for a while then have to find a real job. He’ll have a boss and a wife and kids and he won’t be able to pull up stakes and move every time he is unhappy.

3:50— Houston 82, Rhode Island 77— Danny Hurley’s team is banged-up and having trouble on the road. This game had the feel of an NIT first-round game in March.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin went on a 26-8 run and is up 15 at Marquette. Just because you sit next to Mike Krzyzewski and played for him doesn’t mean you can coach like him.

In one 3-game stretch in November, Maryland’s football team was outscored 149-13; how in the name of Ralph Friedgen are the Terps in a bowl game, much less favored to win it? They play Boston College in a bowl at 2:30 on a Monday afternoon; fitting time slot, at least.

4:16— Wisconsin 93, Marquette 84— Damn. High scoring. Badgers are a veteran team; I’m curious how Greg Gard will fare once these kids are gone and he has to recruit new guys. I’m not judging, just saying this is being done with players Bo Ryan recruited.

Is it fun to be rich? Everyone has problems, rich people’s problems seem better than mine.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. owner Sheldon Adelson lost more than $3 billion in less than an hour this week, after word came from Macau that the government there was reducing the amount of money people can withdraw from one of Macau’s largest banks by 50%.

Because of this rule change, stock in Macau’s casinos dipped so much that Adelson’s stake was worth $3.2B less than it had been an hour earlier. The guy is still worth $29B, so not like he has to panhandle for food, but minus-$3.2B is still a rough couple of hours.

This all has to do with Chinese people wanting to gamble in Macau and how they withdraw money to do so. They just opened a new Asian-themed casino in Las Vegas, that also caters to Chinese clientele.

5:35— Duke was killing UNLV 20-3, it is 20-7 now. Rebels are basically an expansion team; when they hired Marvin Menzies, think he had four players on the roster, so this is a total rebuild- they’re in way over their head today, getting 24.5 points down the street from their own campus.

Dick Vitale is doing this game; it is tough for me to listen to him anymore. He is talking about 1990 and the Tarkanian years— that era is long gone and ain’t ever coming back. Menzies will build this roster up and UNLV will be a solid mid-major, but no more Final Fours.

Wichita State 53, Oklahoma 50— 9:10 left. Good ballgame with March implications.
Butler 44, Cincinnati 39— 15:00 left. Big East-AAC games are always interesting. Still makes me laugh that there are Big EAST teams in Cincinnati, Indy, Milwaukee and Omaha.

6:05— Duke 42-26 at the half and UNLV’s kids are playing their butts off. One thing Vitale was talking about that has some merit; making it six fouls for a college player to foul out. Think the game would be better that way.

Wichita State beats Oklahoma 76-73; Doug Gottlieb had this one right. ESPN messed up when they let Gottlieb bolt for CBS. He is a better analyst than Jay Bilas and more personable.

This game pushed the spread when the Wichita kid made a foul shot he was trying to miss with 0:00.5 left and Shockers up by 2.

Army 21, Navy 17— Cadets win this rivalry game for first time in 15 years.

8:00— Duke 94, UNLV 45— If I’m Marvin Menzies, next time he makes recruiting calls, the term “…..immediate playing time is available” would be used. A lot. It is an effective phrase.

8:30— It bugs me that the Heisman Trophy has an actual hour-long TV program to give out an award when it takes 90 seconds to announce the winner. Guess people are stupid enough to buy commercial time, so they have the program and it makes money. Why?

9:00— Halftime: Michigan 50, UCLA 50— Outstanding game.

Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy. Good for him.

I’m off to go have dinner and watch some more games. Have a nice day.
