Preview: Bulldogs (8-0) at Sycamores (4-4)
Date: December 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Butler University coach Chris Holtmann figures his team is in line for an extremely difficult road test against in-state rival Indiana State.

"I really like Indiana State's team," Holtmann said. "It was a real good challenge for us (at home) last year. They're physical. They're tough. They have older guys. They have some dynamic guards. They've got some talent and the Missouri Valley is a heck of a league."

The No. 16 Bulldogs (8-0) will visit Indiana State (4-4) at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday at Hulman Center.

"We'll need to be better than what we were on the road (last week against Utah) to give ourselves a chance," Holtmann said. "I really believe that. I'm excited about our guys are going on the road in that environment. I think our players are excited about it, too, because we know it's going to be a tremendous challenge. That's a good thing for this group, regardless of what happens."

Butler has played more games with Indiana State than any other opponent, with the series dating to 1903. The Bulldogs hold a 70-56 series edge, winning the past four games, including 85-71 last season.

Holtmann wasn't pleased with his team's approach and first-half play in Saturday's 82-58 victory over visiting Central Arkansas.

"We have to be more focused on the defensive end in practice," junior forward Kelan Martin said. "We have to play together. It wasn't our best game (against Central Arkansas) We have tough teams the rest of the schedule so we have to ratchet it up in practice. We have to be connected together and we'll be fine."

Martin, who scored a season-high 30 points against Central Arkansas, is averaging a team-high 18.1 points per game.

"We have a lot of scorers on the team so I don't have to do all the scoring," Martin said. "I can look for Avery (Woodson) or anybody else."

This is Butler's best start since also starting the 2008-09 season at 8-0.

Sycamores coach Greg Lansing has major concerns about Butler's prowess on both ends of the floor.

"They're such a good defensive team that they take it from you," Lansing said. "They get steals. They're so active. They're well put together on that end. So they get some easy baskets off their defense so that always helps. On the half-court, their field goal percentage is 10 percentage points better than the teams they are playing. At one end, they are getting better shots than they are giving up on the other end.

"They're the best team we've played so far. What they've done so far on the season is very impressive."

Butler is shooting 50.2 percent from the field while its opponents are shooting 40.9 percent.

Indiana State has won two consecutive games, topping visiting Northern Illinois 63-52 and edging host Utah State 62-61.

Sycamores junior Brenton Scott averages a team-high 19.1 points per game.

Preview: Salukis (5-3) at Cardinals (7-1)
Date: December 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Louisville coach Rick Pitino told reporters on Tuesday that he's still working to find the right lineup to suit his No. 11-ranked Cardinals.

"It's not ideal, but it's likely what we need to keep going," said Pitino, who noted he expects to use four or five players in the paint until a pair of players become more reliable.

That lineup will be on display Wednesday as the Cardinals (7-1) face Southern Illinois (5-3) at 7 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.

Pitino's shuffle in the low block has been made more complicated recently because 7-foot center Anas Mahmoud missed the last game and will miss both contests this week with a concussion.

"The medical file on Anas is about this thick," Pitino said, motioning a sizable margin. "He just takes a little longer to come back, actually about 50 percent longer to return that other players - and from everything, not just this concussion. ... But it has allowed us to get a better look at Matz (Stockman)."

The good news for Pitino is that he has options. Louisville's roster is loaded with talented big men - 6-foot-9 starting forward Jaylen Johnson, 6-10 starting center Mangok Mathiang, 6-10 Ray Spalding, 7-0 Mahmoud and 7-1 Stockman.

The Salukis only have one player taller than 6-8 on the roster. That's 6-9 sophomore post Rudy Stradnieks, who averages just 2.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

But Pitino said his crew can't take the Salukis lightly.

"They are a veteran team," Pitino said. "They won't be intimidated by us, that's for sure."

Pitino said he likes what he has seen in practice from a tall, quick lineup of 6-6 VJ King at one guard spot, 6-7 Deng Adel at another and Spalding in the post. That lineup provides Louisville with its most-athletic lineup, Pitino said Tuesday.

While Louisville would prefer to speed things up, SIU coach Barry Hinson is known for slowing down the pace of a game. His teams are infamous for grinding defensive pressure, but he says they are having to change their ways this season with the NCAA's new emphasis on flow of action.

"Getting up on guys - those days are over," Hinson told the SIU Daily Egyptian. "I'm an old school guy. I've always been about get in their grill, get up, get in them, bother them - do all this stuff. Those days are over."

Hinson said he blames himself for not preparing his team for the changes better earlier this season.

"I think we're finally starting to adjust a little bit," Hinson said. "We fouled way too much in the first part of the season. We were way too aggressive on our defense with our hands and not getting into position and not moving, so I don't think that's as much our players' fault as it is my fault."

The Salukis started the season off with a tough 85-81 home loss to Wright State before falling 90-65 at Aransas. SIU returned home to beat Missouri Southern State, SIU-Edwardsville and Mount St. Mary's before a 57-45 road loss at Minnesota on Nov. 25. SIU beat Murray State 89-65 in overtime last Tuesday and most recently beat Texas Southern 74-70.

Senior guard Mike Rodriguez (14.5 ppg) and senior guard Leo Vincent (11.6 ppg) take the bulk of SIU's shots along with 6-4 wing Armon Fletcher (13.5 ppg).

"They are a veteran ball club," Pitino said. "Rodriguez is always getting into the lane. Vincent can score. You have five guys scoring the ball. They play the game the right way."

The Cardinals started the season 5-0 with wins over Evansville, William & Mary, Long Beach State, Old Dominion and Wichita State before falling to No. Baylor in the Battle 4 Atlantis title game 66-63. Since then, Louisville took down then-No. 15 Purdue 71-64 and beat Grand Canyon in Phoenix 79-70.

"I watched them play Purdue," Hinson said. "I didn't sleep that night at all."

Hinson, only half kidding about his lack of sleep, said he wants his team loose and ready to play Wednesday night.

"You know what? Let's lace them up and let's go," Hinson said. "We've got nothing to lose when we go there and we're going to play. It'll be a great opportunity. I'm looking forward to it."

Preview: Catamounts (3-5) at Mountainers (6-1)
Date: December 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Showing grit and no-retreat toughness, No. 15 West Virginia made a statement Saturday by snapping Virginia's 24-game home win streak.

Now the Mountaineers (6-1) hope to maintain that edge against Western Carolina (3-5) during a Wednesday night follow-up. The game is being staged three hours south of West Virginia's campus at the Charleston (W.Va.) Civic Center.

Fans' expectations are energized by the 66-57 upset at Virginia in which Bob Huggins' team used an 11-2 closing run.

"It got to be a playground type of game," Huggins said. "It was kind of two teams from different neighborhoods. It got a little chippy, got a little physical, got a little talking going on. I think our guys respond to that."

Leading the nation in average margin of victory (plus-30.3 points), forced turnovers (25.4 per game) and steals (13.1 per game), West Virginia could pad those stats as it begins a five-game stretch against mid-majors with a combined record of 18-25.

Huggins wants his team to use the next three weeks of nonconference play to improve execution in the half-court offense. He even altered shooting drills to get players more passing repetitions.

"We have the greatest managers in the world, and they're better passers than our guys," Huggins said. "So I told (assistant coach) Erik Martin, 'Here's an idea: Why don't you let our guys pass to our guys instead of the managers passing to our guys.'"

One player already adept at passing, 6-foot-9 senior Nathan Adrian stands among the national leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio and paces the Mountaineers at 13 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. After missing all four 3-point tries at Virginia, the forward's long-distant shooting dipped to 26 percent, though he contributed in other facets.

"Nate shot the ball poorly, but he still made plays," Huggins said. "We ran offense through him, he did a great job defensively, he kept balls alive, rebounded the ball. He still did things to win the game."

Forward Esa Ahmad (12.6 points, 4.9 rebounds per game) and point guard Jevon Carter (9.2 points, 3.0 steals per game) are important cogs in a deep rotation in which 12 players average four points or more.

While the Mountaineers score more than 90 points per game, Western Carolina averages just 56.2 as it nears the finish of a seven-game road swing. The Catamounts have already visited Miami (Fla.), Marquette and Ohio State.

"As a young basketball player, I'd watch games on TV that were played in these places," Western Carolina freshman Jason McMillan said. "It's a dream come true to go into those arenas, lace up, put on a jersey and play. It's a whole other level."

Along with the financial boost provided by such cash games, Catamounts coach Larry Hunter uses them as teaching tools before Southern Conference action.

"When you play teams like Ohio State and Marquette, your weaknesses are identified much more readily," he said.

Junior guard Haboubacar Mutombo leads Western Carolina in scoring (12 points per game) and rebounding (7.1 boards per game). Sophomore forward Marc Gosselin is contributing 8.6 points and 6.1 rebounds a game.

The Catamounts are coming off a 58-53 win over Appalachian State on Saturday. Mutombo scored a team-high 13 points.

Preview: Crusaders (7-1) at Wildcats (7-1)
Date: December 07, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky (7-1) will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday night when Valparaiso visits Rupp Arena.

After reeling off seven straight wins to start the season, the Wildcats suffered their first loss Saturday, a 97-92 setback to undefeated UCLA that snapped a 42-game home win streak. It cost Kentucky their No. 1 ranking, dropping them to No. 6 in the new Associated Press poll. UCLA skyrocketed from No. 11 to 2.

"For 24 hours, I mourn and then I'm good. Let's go. Next game, who is it?" Calpari said. "And then it happens to be this one. Like, why did we schedule this team? I have no idea. This is gonna be an extremely hard game for us to win. They have three seniors, two juniors. You know what they did a year ago and they came back to be together."

In the loss, Kentucky's defense surrendered a season-worst 97 points, nearly 30 points above its season average. On offense, UK shot just 41.3 percent, including 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range.

Next up is Valpo, also 7-1, and riding the wave of strong victories heading into Wednesday's showdown. Coach Matt Lottich's Crusaders defeated No. 21 Rhode Island, 65-62, on Nov. 29; BYU, 92-89, on Nov. 23; and Alabama, 68-60, on Nov. 21. Valpo's only loss was 76-54 at No. 4 Oregon.

The game will be Kentucky's first test against a dominant post player. Valpo's Alec Peters, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound senior, averages 25.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

"Twenty-five points and 13 rebounds and if you foul him he's 94 percent," Calipari said. "He knows how to score baskets. He steps back, he fades away and scores so even if you guard him and do a good job he can still score. Other than that, it's just another guy. Twenty-five a game, man. There's more pro scouts coming to this game than even the last game."

Calipari has his strategy set.

"Go to church and light candles," he said. "Because he's one of those guys, literally, if you double-team and he fades away he can still make it. Try to keep him from catching it. Try to go at him on offense, but they do a good job. You ready for this number? In four years, he's never fouled out of a game. Well, how can that be? Because if you post him, they double-team, and if he gets in any kind of foul trouble they go zone. Smart coaching."

The only other Valpo player in double figures is 6-7 guard Shane Hammink at 15.4.

As a team, the Crusaders are shooting only 42 percent, including 26 percent from 3-point range. Valpo, however, hits 81.5 percent from the foul line, fifth best in the nation.

Kentucky, by contrast, shoots 48.4 percent, 32.4 from 3-point range. The Wildcats hit 70.6 from the charity stripe. UK's biggest strength might be defense where they have forced 151 turnovers through eight games, 19 per game. Kentucky also averages better than 20 assists per outing.

The Wildcats are led in scoring by freshman guard Malik Monk at 19.9 points per game. Next is sophomore guard Isaiah Briscoe at 17.3, freshman guard De'Aaron Fox at 15.9 and freshman forward Bam Adebayo at 12.0 to go with 8.3 rebounds.

Kentucky averages a whopping 95.1 points per game, fourth best in the nation, compared to Valpo's 75.5.

"I've been doing this 30 years and it is a process," Calipari said. "I've been doing it here now for eight years, and every team was different. It is a process. I get like you: We should win every single game that we play, we should go 82-0, win every game by -- then I wake up and I'm like, 'What am I thinking? Let's go. Let's just get back to work and get better.'"

Preview: Wildcats (5-2) at Tar Heels (8-1)
Date: December 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina will be without junior point guard Joel Berry for Wednesday night's game against Davidson, but the Tar Heels should have plenty of options to make it through the short term.

"You don't want to see your teammate get hurt like that, especially Joel, who has been a big leader for us," forward Isaiah Hicks said. "But Coach (Roy Williams) says North Carolina has got to play. We can worry about him when we are not playing, but when we are playing we got to try to win."

The seventh-ranked Tar Heels (8-1) take on Davidson (5-2) at the Smith Center.

With Berry out, the extra court time is likely to go to senior guard Nate Britt, who has been a part-time starter on the wing, and freshman Seventh Woods. Williams said Tuesday afternoon that he hasn't decided on who'll be in the starter's role.

Woods said he has been frustrated at times, but it has been a time for learning.

"You have Joel and Nate, two veteran point guards, and I've learned a lot from just sitting on the bench watching them, and from going against them in practice," Woods said.

Berry suffered a sprained left ankle Sunday in the second half of a romp past Radford. His status for next Sunday's game against Tennessee remains uncertain.

Berry is the Tar Heels' second-leading scorer with 14.8 points per game. He was the Most Valuable Player of the Maui Invitational last month.

Woods played 22 minutes against Radford, though he said the time was tainted by his five turnovers.

"I looked at it as an opportunity," he said.

The Tar Heels seem relieved that the extent of Berry's injury doesn't appear severe.

"Joel is tough," Hicks said. "He's going to be all right. We don't have to baby him a lot."

Meanwhile, North Carolina junior swingman Theo Pinson had X-rays Monday that showed the broken bone in his right foot is healing as expected. He suffered the injury Oct. 26, with the timetable for his return coming after eight to 12 weeks. He hasn't yet been cleared for running and jumping.

Davidson failed to protect an 11-point, second-half lead in Sunday's 76-61 loss at College of Charleston.

The Wildcats fell short, according to veteran coach Bob McKillop, because of "decisions, details and discipline."

"They made us make some bad decisions," McKillop said.

McKillop said it was the first time that the Wildcats had a sizable margin and had it taken away this season. He said he hopes the experience is something to learn from.

"We did not respond to it," he said. "It's part of the process."

North Carolina has a 64-11 all-time advantage in the series against Davidson, which has lost its last seven meetings with the Tar Heels. This marks the fourth season in a row that the teams will face each other.

After traveling to New Orleans, Hawaii and Indiana across the first few weeks of the season, Williams said the Tar Heels should benefit from practice time without boarding a plane for the next game.

"All of a sudden you think a little bit about helping your team get better, but you also have to start talking about another opponent," he said.

Preview: Musketeers (7-1) at Buffaloes (6-2)
Date: December 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The Colorado Buffaloes have strived to become relevant on the national stage since Tad Boyle became coach six years ago.

They have a great chance to become part of the conversation when they host No. 13 Xavier at the Coors Events Center on Wednesday at Boulder, Colo.

The Musketeers (7-1) are Colorado's second ranked opponent on its non-conference schedule, and a win Wednesday would give it a sweep of those teams.

The Buffaloes beat Texas, then No. 22, 68-54 in the consolation game of The Legends Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 22. The Musketeers give them another chance at a resume win as the teams start a home-and-home series, with next year's matchup set for Cincinnati.

"When I think of Xavier basketball, the first thing that comes to my mind is the toughness. They've got great toughness," Boyle told the Boulder Daily Camera. "They've got really good players and they're very well coached. Xavier doesn't beat themselves, you have to go beat them. We have to be ready for a street fight."

Both teams are trying to put disappointing losses behind. Colorado (6-2) lost to in-state rival Colorado State last week to snap a 12-game home winning streak but bounced back to beat Portland 76-63.

Xavier dropped its only true road game at No. 4 Baylor.

The Musketeers played arguably their best half of basketball when they took a 34-31 lead at intermission against the Bears. They followed that up with a bad second half and lost 76-61.

Turnovers were an issue in that game, and coach Chris Mack told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he talked to his players about the missed opportunity in Waco, Texas.

"I'm sure (the players) felt some positives. I didn't necessarily show them a lot of the positives," Mack told the Enquirer. "I think everybody in the world always wants to give the sugar-coated version. I gave our guys reality, and that was what we got away from in the second half really hurt us and we didn't have an ability to stop the momentum. We didn't have an ability to take good shots and to turn the ball over. We've got to do that at Colorado."

The Musketeers are led in scoring by junior guard Trevon Bluiett, who is averaging 18.4 points a game. He and RaShid Gaston, lead Xavier in rebounding at 6.3 rebounds a game. Xavier has three players averaging at least 15 points.

It will be a tough task to beat Colorado on the glass. The Buffaloes outrebound opponents by nine a game and are third in the Pac-12 in rebounding margin. They are led by Xavier Johnson, who is averaging a team-best 14.4 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Senior Derrick White is Colorado's do-all player, averaging 14 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

"(Colorado is) a team that really takes a lot of pride on the offensive glass," Mack told the Enquirer. "They might be one of the best offensive rebounding teams we've faced all year."

The Buffaloes are facing a team that crashes the boards. Xavier is also outrebounding opponents by nine per game and ranks 12th nationally in rebounding margin at 10.6.

It comes down to strength against strength, and Colorado is hoping its home court will be a difference maker.

"It's going to be a heck of a challenge," Boyle told the Daily Camera. "Nothing against Portland, but this is a little different animal than the Portland Pilots in terms of their personnel. Portland is well-coached. Xavier is well-coached and they've got some dudes who can rip your head off if you're not ready to play."

Preview: Bluejays (8-0) at Cornhuskers (5-3)
Date: December 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Creighton is set for its first true road game Wednesday, but the Bluejays don't have to stray far from home for their initial challenge in a hostile environment.

The 10th-ranked Bluejays will travel just under 60 miles west on Interstate 80 to play in-state rival Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.

It is the first time in program history that Creighton is a Top 10 team in either poll in consecutive weeks. The Bluejays (8-0) remained No. 10 in the Associated Press poll while moving from No. 12 to No. 10 in the USA Today coaches poll Monday.

The annual showdown for bragging rights has been lopsided in Creighton's favor in recent seasons, and Bluejays coach Greg McDermott has never lost a game to a Tim Miles-coached team.

Bluejays guard Khyri Thomas, a sophomore from Omaha, said the Creighton coaches are more into the rivalry aspect than he is.

"Now that I'm at Creighton, it's starting to become a big deal," Thomas said. "Last year I got a little taste of it, but this year we're going there. The coaches are always amped up about it, so I guess I have to get amped up as well.

"It's just another game. I'm ready to play, get the win and on to the next game."

While the Bluejays played three games away from CenturyLink Center, all of those were at a neutral site in the Virgin Islands. McDermott expects to know much more about the Jays by the time the game ends late Wednesday night.

"I wish we would have had one other true road game before to get out feet wet, but we're going to go into the fire right away," McDermott said. "I'm going to learn a lot about our team on Wednesday, whether we can go into an environment like that, where it's loud and there are plenty of distractions because of the energy and the crowd. We have to be able to focus our way through it."

Nebraska (5-3) took an 11-point loss to No. 2 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion and a two-point setback to Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. McDermott said Miles has the Huskers on the right track.

"He's got them playing well," McDermott said. "They've got a couple of near-misses against some really good teams."

Two Huskers specifically mentioned by McDermott as having good starts to the season were Glynn Watson Jr. and Tai Webster. Those pair are averaging a combined 30.7 points per game, with Webster setting the pace at 16.9.

How the two teams get things done on offense and defense are vastly different. Creighton is the only team in the country that is shooting better than 50 percent from the field in all its games, and the Bluejays average 90.2 points per game.

The Huskers are making shots at a clip of 42.5 percent through their first eight games while averaging 69.1 points per outing. Nebraska is giving up 62.5 points per game, while Creighton surrenders 73.9 each time out.

McDermott said the Huskers aren't a team the Bluejays can take lightly. He noted that none of Creighton's current starters have played in the rivalry game in Lincoln.

"They're playing with a lot more confidence," McDermott said. "Nebraska's a very capable basketball team, and we're going to have to have our 'A' game if we going to go in there and expect to win."

The Wednesday contest begins a rough week for Nebraska, which plays at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday.

"It's a big week for us to come prepared and play our game and execute what Coach Miles wants us to do," Watson told huskers.com. "It's big. It's a chance for us to show our game and show that we can play with the best teams, also. It's big, but we've got to prepare and execute whatever we've got to do to get the W."

Preview: Huskies (4-3) at Bulldogs (8-0)
Date: December 07, 2016 11:00 PM EDT

Gonzaga completed one of its objectives against a Pac-12 opponent and fellow West Coast power Arizona, ending a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats last Saturday in Los Angeles.

Now comes the opportunity for the eighth-ranked Bulldogs (8-0) to defeat another Pac-12 team and regional rival Washington (4-3) in a matchup at Gonzaga's McCarthey Athletic Center on Wednesday at 11 p.m. ET.

The programs are separated by only 279 miles from Seattle to Spokane. Despite that, it was a long time coming for a home-and-home scheduling arrangement to be made.

This will be the first meeting between the two programs at one of the home sites since the 2006-07 season. Washington leads the all-time series 29-15 with the last meeting coming in the Bahamas last November as Gonzaga took away an 80-64 victory at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Gonzaga makes a return trip to Seattle next season. The teams will then trade trips in the two years after that.

"We decided to (renew the series), so we're excited about doing it," said Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. "It's going to be a great, great atmosphere over there. They'll come back here the following year and I know it'll be a great atmosphere here. I always said that we would renew the series at some point. And now it's here."

Gonzaga coach Mark Few said the delay in resuming the series (which was finalized two years ago) had to do with the Bulldogs being more in demand to play in events featuring other top non-conference opponents. Romar said at first Washington looked for non-conference games with more national television exposure, but he believes now that the Bulldogs offer that.

"We always knew we would resume the series," Few said. "But our schedules have been full the last few years. We had an opportunity (this season) and both teams were agreeable to playing.

"Our home-and-homes have been great (with Washington in the past). Certainly when we did play Washington the games were very high intensity, great crowds and great passion. We hope to have that same feeling with the next four years of the series."

Adding to the intrigue of the rivalry is the matchup at point guard of former Washington player Nigel Williams-Goss, now with Gonzaga, against freshman NBA prospect Markelle Fultz of Washington.

Fultz, who has the potential to be the No. 1 pick overall in the 2017 draft, is averaging 22.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. He is shooting 54 percent from the field and 48.1 percent from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all but two games.

"Tremendous talent who can always put his team in a good position," Few said of Fultz.

Williams-Goss led Washington in scoring and assists before his departure following his sophomore season in 2014-15. He recently mentioned he transferred to Gonzaga to be part of a winning program and that he believed Washington did not prepare its players to be as successful as they could be.

Romar's response: "Obviously Gonzaga has gone to the tournament 17 straight years, so it's a good bet they're probably going to win and go to the tournament. Totally understand what he's saying. We also have to understand that the two years Nigel was here, especially his second year, was probably the worst two years that we've had."

Washington was 33-30 overall with a Pac-12 record of 14-22 when Williams-Goss was with the Huskies. The 14 conference wins were the lowest in a two-year period under Romar, who is in his 15th season as Washington's head coach.

"We were probably as dysfunctional as we've been since we've been here," Romar said. "If you want to take that time and decide if Washington was the best place to be, it probably wasn't."

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

— Baylor hired Temple’s football coach Matt Rhule; good move.

— Duke 84, Florida 74— Gators’ coach Mike White is the son of Duke’s AD; tough couple hours for Mrs White the wife/mom.

— San Antonio 105, Minnesota 91— Spurs are unbeaten on road.

— Florida Atlantic 79, Ohio State 77 (OT)— FAU came in 1-5 vs D-I teams, with one top 200 game (L 88-80 to Hofstra). Owls were a 20-point underdog.

— Magic 124, Wizards 116— John Wall scored 52 in a losing cause.

— Red Sox traded for Chris Sale, giving up four prospects. Most of what I read on the Interweb said Chicago got best of the deal. Boston ate the rest of Yoan Moncada’s contract since Sale’s deal is so team-friendly.

Wednesday, December 7

Six of Indiana State’s seven D-I games were decided by 3 or less points or in OT. Indiana State is 4-4 vs schedule #65; only one of its seven D-I games (W63-52 Northern Illinois) games was at home. Sycamores are shooting only 30.8% on arc. Butler beat Indiana State by 23-14 points last two years; Bulldogs are 8-0 with 68-59 win at Utah in their only true road game- they also beat Vandy/Arizona on neutral floor in Las Vegas. Butler are forcing turnovers 24.8% of time (#9 in US)- they start three seniors, two juniors.

Boston College beat Harvard by 13-7 points the last two years after losing four in row to Crimson before that; BC is 4-3 with 88-70 over Dartmouth- they’re 3-1 vs teams outside top 150, with disturbing home loss to #307 Nicholls State. Eagles are turning ball over 22.1% of the time. Harvard is #339 experience team turning ball over 23.1% of time; they lost by 4 to UMass in only true road game so far- they did beat Fordham/Northeastern in last two games. Crimson is starting three freshmen and a sophomore.

Georgia Tech outscored VCU 24-12 on foul line in 77-64 home win over the Rams LY, game that was tied at half. Tech is in a total rebuild now, with new coach- they lost last two games, by 23-7 points, their first true road games of season- they turn ball over 21.3% of time. VCU lost 64-46 to Illinois on a neutral floor Saturday, going 2-18 on arc; Rams are 4-0 vs teams outside top 100, winning by 15-5-39-6 points. A-14 home favorites are 12-23 vs spread. ACC underdogs are 5-11 away from home.

George Washington lost four of last six games; they’re 0-3 vs top 100 teams, with three of four losses by 8 or less points. Colonails have an interim coach, are turning ball over 22.2% of time. Best team GW has beaten so far is #110 Siena. Temple won its last five games with couple of top 30 wins in there; Owls Temple won its last six games with GW; teams last met four years ago. Colonials lost last three visits here by 13-13-7 points. AAC home favorites are 8-5 vs spread. A-14 road underdogs are 6-6.

SMU outscored TCU 8-0 over final 3:07 of game LY in 75-70 win at TCU; Frogs had led by 12 points in first half. TCU 8-0 this year under new coach Dixon against schedule #262; they’re forcing turnovers 26.2% of time (#3 in US), won only true road game by 4 at UNLV- they also beat Washington on neutral floor. SMU is 6-3 vs schedule #108; they’re 3-2 vs top 10 teams, are playing #322 tempo under Jankovich, also a new coach. AAC home favorites are 8-5 vs spread. Big X underdogs are 8-3 vs spread away from home.

Illinois State is 4-2, losing its two road games, by 3 at Murray State, 9 at TCU. Redbirds are #78 experience team that is shooting 39.2% (#40) on arc but turning ball over 20.8% of time (#248). ISU starts three juniors and a senior. Tulsa lost 7 of its top 8 scorers from LY; they’re 3-3 this year, turning ball over 24.2% of time (#343). Hurricane lost their only top 150 games, by 10 to Little Rock, 27 to Wichita State. MVC favorites are 3-6 vs spread away from home; Missouri Valley home underdogs are 2-1.

Loyola, IL seems like an improved team this year, beating San Diego State in last game; they’re 4-0 vs teams ranked outside top 200, with three wins by 13+ points. Ramblers force turnovers 22.1% of the time; they start three juniors, one senior. Wright State fired its coach after a 22-13 season LY; Raiders are 6-3 for new coach Nagy, losing by 7 at Georgia State, 22 at Penn State in last two games. Wright is #80 experience team but is turning ball over 21.5% of time and is shooting just 43.8% inside the arc.

Creighton won its last five games with Nebraska, winning 64-42/65-55 in last two visits to Lincoln; Bluejays are 8-0 this season, but this is their first true road game. Creighton is making 44.8% of its 3’s (#3 in US), has #2 eFG% in country; they’ve got three top 100 wins, including win over Wisconsin. Nebraska is 1-3 vs top 50 teams, losing by 11-13-2 points; their only top 100 win was by hoop over Dayton on a neutral floor. Cornhuskers starts four sophs, one senior; they’re shooting 31.3% on arc, have #284 eFG% in country. Not good. This game is for state championship of Nebraska, kind of.

Xavier is 7-1 vs schedule #59 but got hammered by 15 at Baylor Saturday in its first true road game; Xavier’s bench plays 2nd-fewest minutes in country, which could be factor in high altitude here. Musketeers force turnovers 21.4% of time; they’re 3-1 vs top 10 teams, beating Clemson on a neutral and beating Northern Iowa twice. Colorado is 6-2 vs schedule #288 which includes a home loss to Colorado State; Buffs have #18 eFG% defense in country. Colorado split pair of top 100 games on neutral floor in NYC, losing to Notre Dame but beating Texas.

#176 Long Beach State is still ranked as the #2 team in Big West, despite fact that they’re 0-9 vs D-I teams, having played hardest schedule in America, but they also lost to Binghamton on a neutral floor and at Fla Gulf Coast. 49ers are starting two freshmen, one soph; they’re turning ball over 23.2 % of time- when you’re 1-9, there are no good stats. Long Beach lost 77-75 LY at Pepperdine, when Waves made 9-20 on arc, only 6-15 on line. Pepperdine lost its last three games, allowing 88.3 pts/game; they’re #75 experience team, should be doing better.

PG Nigel Williams-Goss transferred from Washington to Gonzaga; he will be center of attention in this game, a regional rivalry of sorts. Zags were 30-44 on foul line in 80-64 win over Huskies LY in Bahamas tourney- game was 44-27 at half. Gonzaga is 8-0 this season with neutral court wins over Florida/Iowa State/Arizona; they’ve got #24 eFG% defense in country. Washington is #341 experience team playing 36 tempo, so they go too fast. Huskies just lost twice to TCU, by 13-15 points, losing 86-71 in Fort Worth in their first true road game of season.

Seton Hall won 68-57 over Hawai’i last night; seven kids played 21:00+, only two played more than 30:00. Pirates are 6-2 but 1-2 vs top 100 teams, with 66-52 neutral floor loss to Stanford, Cal’s biggest rival. Seton hall starts four juniors who won Big East conference tourney nine months ago. Cal was down a hoop at half to Princeton last nite, won by 11; Golden Bears got injured bird back last night, are almost back to full strength- they played five guys 28:00+ last night. Cal has #3 eFG% defense because they have NBA-level rim protector on defense.

Northern Iowa lost its last four games with two losses to Xavier, then disturbing losses to George Mason/Wyoming; Panthers are #103 experience team playing #103 tempo; they’re forcing turnovers 25.3% of time (#6 in US) but are shooting dreadful 39.5% inside arc, which is awful. South Dakota State has new coach for first time in 22 years; they’re 4-6 with couple of non-D-I wins. Jackrabbits start a freshman, two sophs- they lost by 29-12 points in only two top 100 games. Summit League road underdogs are 14-19 against the spread.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
December 7, 2016

**Davidson at North Carolina**

-- North Carolina (8-1 straight up, 5-2 against the spread) is seventh in the Associated Press rankings and No. 17 in the RPI. The Tar Heels won the Maui Classic with wins over Chaminade (104-61), Oklahoma State (107-75) and Wisconsin (71-56). They also rolled to an 83-68 win at Hawaii two days before the Maui Classic started.

-- North Carolina will be without star point guard Joel Berry II, who is averaging 14.8 points, 4.7 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. The junior sprained his ankle in Sunday’s 95-50 win over Radford.

-- As of early this morning, most books had UNC listed as a 15.5-point ‘chalk,’ while one offshore shop had a total of 154.

-- One week after knocking off the Badgers in Hawaii, Roy Williams’s squad took its first loss at Indiana. The Hoosiers won a 76-65 decision as 5.5-point home underdogs at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The 143 combined points dipped ‘under’ the 164.5-point tally. Justin Jackson led the Tar Heels with 21 points and eight boards.

-- UNC has won all three of its home games at the Dean Smith Center, going 2-0 ATS. In Sunday’s victory over Radford, Kenny Williams scored 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from downtown. The sophomore guard has hit 13-of-26 shots from 3-point land after going 1-of-13 from beyond the arc last season. Kennedy Meeks added 13 points and nine rebounds.

-- UNC is 3-1-1 ATS in its five games as a double-digit favorite.

-- Davidson (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) is led by senior point guard Jack Gibbs, who is averaging 23.3 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The Wildcats have another elite player in junior forward Peyton Aldridge, who is averaging 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

-- Bob McKillop’s squad has been an underdog once this year, losing 95-78 to Clemson while catching 3.5 points in Kissimmee, Fla. Aldridge had 22 points and eight boards, while Gibbs finished with 18 points and four assists before fouling out.

-- Davidson has wins over Missouri (70-55) and Arizona State (68-60) in Florida and it also won 78-57 at Mercer as a four-point road favorite. The Wildcats’ other loss came in their last outing, a 76-61 loss Sunday at College of Charleston. Gibbs had 23 points and five boards in the losing effort, while Aldridge finished with 21 points and eight rebounds.

-- The ‘under’ is 5-2 overall for UNC, 2-0 in its home contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-3 overall for the Wildcats, 1-1 in its two true road assignments.

-- Davidson is seventh in the country in free-throw shooting (79.8%). Meanwhile, UNC is eighth in the nation in scoring (90.2 points per game) and 12th in field-goal percentage (50.6%).

-- Tip-off in Chapel Hill is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Washington at Gonzaga**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Gonzaga (8-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) installed as a 15.5-point favorite. One offshore book had the total at 165.5.

-- Mark Few’s team will host its in-state rival tonight at The McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane. This is the first time these schools, which are separated by just 279 miles, have square off on another’s home court in a decade. They last met at the Battle 4 Atlantis last season with the Bulldogs collecting an 80-64 win as 9.5-point favorites.

-- Gonzaga has won nine of the last 10 head-to-head meetings going back to the Casey Calvary Era (1998), producing an 8-2 spread record.

-- Gonzaga’s Nigel Williams-Goss, a transfer from UW, will be facing his former school. Williams-Goss is the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Josh Perkins is the team’s leading scorer (13.1 PPG) who has drained 20-of-39 attempts from 3-point land (51.3%). Zach Collins, a seven-foot freshman center, is also averaging in double figures (11.1 PPG), as is Missouri transfer Johnathan Williams (10.0 PPG).

-- Gonzaga won the AdvoCare Invitational in Kissimmee with wins over Quinnipiac (82-62), Florida (77-72) and Iowa State (73-71). Williams-Goss was the catalyst in the finals against the Cyclones, producing 18 points, four boards and four assists.

-- Washington (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) is looking to avoid a third consecutive loss. The back-to-back defeats, both of which came to TCU, were preceded by a four-game winning streak after the Huskies lost their opener to Yale, 98-90, as 14.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The Horned Frogs beat UW 93-80 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Nov. 26 and then took it to the Huskies again 86-71 in Ft. Worth on Nov. 30.

-- Washington is led by freshman guard Markelle Fultz, a five star recruit who is averaging team-bests in scoring (22.7 PPG), assists (6.6 APG) and steals (2.1 SPG). Fultz is making 54.0 percent of its shots from the field and 48.1 percent from 3-point range. Fultz, who is also blocking 1.4 shots per game, scored a career-high 35 points vs. Cal-State Fullerton and also dropped 30 on Yale in the opener.

-- Noah Dickerson, UW’s sophomore forward who was originally signed by Billy Donovan in his last recruiting haul for Florida, was released from his letter of intent when Donovan bolted for the NBA. Dickerson has thrived with the Huskies and is averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 RPG while making a team-high 57.9 percent of his attempts from the floor.

-- Washington is winless both SU and ATS in both of its underdog spots, both of which came to TCU.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-3 overall for the Huskies, but they saw the ‘under’ cash in their only road game.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-1 overall for Gonzaga, 1-0 in its one home game with a total.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Rhode Island star Hassan Martin is out indefinitely with a quadriceps injury. “The senior forward has begun treatment and rehab with the timetable of a full recovery and return to the court,” said a statement released by the school. Martin averages 16.1 points and 8.1 RPG. He’s third in the nation in blocked shots, rejecting 3.9 balls per game.

-- Luke Kennard’s timely shooting sparked Duke to an 84-74 win over Florida as a 7.5-point favorite Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Kennard scored 29 points on electric 11-of-16 shooting from the field, including five 3-balls on just seven launches. Kennard looked like a combination of former Warrior stars Chris Mullin and Sarunas Marciulionis. The 158 combined points sailed ‘over’ the 147.5-point tally. Amile Jefferson added 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Jayson Tatum produced 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals in his second collegiate game. The Gators were led by sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen, who had 21 points on 8-of-12 attempts from the field. Kasey Hill had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

-- In the lid-lifter of the Jimmy V Classic at MSG, Purdue smashed Arizona State 97-64 as an 11.5-point ‘chalk.’ Isaac Haas led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Vince Edwards came off the bench to contribute 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes of playing time.

-- Florida Atlantic went into Columbus last night and stunned Ohio State 79-77 in overtime as a 20.5-point road underdog. The Owls won on Nick Rutherford’s shot in the lane that he kissed home off the glass with one second remaining. They cashed monster +2125 tickets for their money-line backers at 5Dimes.eu (risk $100 to win $2,125!).

-- The defending national champs improved to 9-0 with last night’s 89-79 win over La Salle at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Villanova’s Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart paced the winners with 26 and 21 points, respectively. Jay Wright’s program won its 17th consecutive Big Five game, but the Explorers covered the number as 17.5-point underdogs. For those not familiar with Philly hoops, members of the Big Five in the City of Brotherly love include Villanova, La Salle, Penn, Temple and Saint Joseph’s. The Wildcats face Notre Dame in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday. Phil Booth missed his fifth consecutive game with a knee injury.

-- Harvard took the cash in last night’s 86-80 over Northeastern as a 2.5-point home favorite. Seth Towns led the way for the Crimson with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Siyani Chambers added 13 points and 11 assists compared to merely one turnover. Corey Johnson finished with 21 points on stellar 7-of-10 shooting from downtown.
